Golfito, ergo sum. I golf, therefore, I am. In this revolutionary meditation on golf, philosopher Andrew Sola and PGA professional Bruce Loome use the groundbreaking ideas of the great thinkers to help you become a better golfer. The Philosophical Golfer is not just another instructional book that only shows you how to increase your distance or cure your slice. By using unique insight from geniuses like Descartes, Kant, and Marx, it teaches you how to become a complete golfer, technically and mentally, from tee to green. The great thinkers dedicated themselves to understanding the universe and improving our lives. But until now, no one has considered how their wisdom can help us understand the game of golf. Becoming a philosophical golfer will certainly improve your game--it may also change your life. Volume II covers modern philosophy, beginning in 17th century France and ending in 20th century America. Each chapter is accompanied by practical tips to improve your performance on the course.

Best Ebook PDF Online Fred's Way: A Novel, by Craig Nagel

Fred's Way is a coming-of-age novel about a young man torn between going off to college to become an ordained Lutheran pastor or staying home in Chicago to marry his high school sweetheart. It resonates with the agony of someone trying desperately-and often comically-to find his role in a society that refuses to fit his innocent expectations. The central character, Fred Hansen, is at root a mystic, alive to the wonder and glory of life. Like a latter-day Don Quixote, he's never quite in synch with what others call reality, including the scientific world view of his premed roommate, Jimbo; the commonsense practicality of his girlfriend, Patsy; the argumentative mindset of Catherine Coyle, an attractive classmate with whom he gets entangled; or the spontaneous (and somewhat improvident) habits of Corning, a red-haired art major who lives down the hall. Fred's Way recaptures the torrent of changes sweeping through America at the start of the 1960s and gently explores the heartaches and triumphs we all encounter in the process of trying to find our place in the world.

Fred's Way: A Novel, by Craig Nagel

About the Author Craig Nagel is a Minnesota author best known for two fine collections of short pieces written over many years for a weekly newspaper, the Lake Country Echo. His light touch, his compassion, and his perfect pitch evoke the joys and sorrows of daily life, and have earned him thousands of loyal readers. In this his first novel, Craig creates an imagined place-a fine liberal arts college of Lutheran persuasion-and sets within it a very bright, verbal, idealistic boy of the later 1950s. We follow Fred Hansen on his way via an interior commentary on events variously bewildering, ecstatic, shaming, hilarious, poignant. Keeping all this drama (much of it interior) going requires an authorial hand both gentle and sure; and Craig Nagel is that author. Fred's Way is a story from the middle of the last century, when today's grandparents were flocking to college, losing innocence, seeking faith. I had the powerful feeling on reading this manuscript that I “knew Fred Hansen when,” that I'd had those discussions with him in '61 when it was all happening to me, that I could run into Fred at the Tip Top Cafe and call back that crazy night toward the end of our sophomore year. Fred's Way reads like a prequel to the life of one of Craig's newspaper column readers who pause on reading and smile, or sigh. It takes a fine novelist to do that, and this is indeed a fine novel. Douglas A. Davis, PhD. Emeritus Professor of Psychology Haverford College

By John Hess Nagel has a firm grip on living a naive life in the early 60’s, while taking the world he has been given by his parents and church, and finding that he doesn’t exactly accept everything he has been taught to believe. And so he begins the journey of a lifetime — one that is endlessly challenging. That is learning how to be your own person — a good person — and how to relate to the people around you. His writing seemed to me fairly simple and elementary at first and it grows in complexity and sophistication along with Fred’s growing persona. That is a very neat trick. Nagel’s descriptions of his characters are sometimes laugh out loud funny and at other times silky smooth and knowing.I’m of an age to feel deeply the authenticity with which Nagel explores Fred’s world and I recommend it — it is just a good story, but if you lived in that era, it can be truly powerful to find yourself back in it.

But unlike Odysseus whose goal was always the same Fred spends the whole story stepping goal to goal like pilgrim crossing a river on stones. As far as my decades have revealed, life is like this. It’s not what you thought it might be. But life itself... living is good. Finding that out is enough for anyone. Nagel helps us see the simple truth and makes us laugh out loud in the process. No book can hope for more than this.

Reasonableness of Catholic Ceremonies and Practices, by Rev. John J. Burke

About the Author John J. Burke (1875–1936) was a Paulist priest and editor of the Catholic World from 1903 to 1922. A central point of Burke's writing and lecturing concerned the supernatural element of charity. Burke told the 1915 graduating class of New York's College of Mount Saint Vincent-on-Hudson that, for two millennia, the Church has pursued as her "one great purpose" to lead souls to the love of God. "Whatever other claims she makes as to her mission," he insisted, "are at best but secondary." Burke warned Catholics about the modern superstition that "experts in the social sciences might well be trusted with our social betterment," a view that encouraged the trend towards making of religion "a private and an almost secret matter." (Wikipedia) His other books include Characteristics of the Early Church (1899), The Great Problem (1909), The Church in Many Lands (1915), The Armor of Light (1925), The Path of Duty (1941), The Rural Rector (1942), Trials and Triumphs (1942), The Miracles of the Master (1942), and The Catholic at War (1942).

In 1957 the English choreographer Frederick Ashton and the German composer Hans Werner Henze began to collaborate on a new ballet, Ondine. During the creation of the work Henze kept a diary of its progress and his thoughts on the choreography and the music. Here translated into English for the first time, the diary gives a major insight into the workings of the creators' minds during the composition of one of the twentieth century's major works of art.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Dear Hans, thanks for sharing, you're the cat's pajamas. Better, you're The Cat's Fugue. By J. Faulk These extracts, melded together, from the composer's diary were published in Germany in 1959 and in English in 2003.In 1957 Ashton and Henze meet in Ischia to convert the old German folktale Undine into a ballet scenario that choreographer, composer, and the great ballerina Fonteyn can find inspiring (as well as the traditionalist London audience). The tale commences in the hut of a fisherman and his wife and their foundling daughter, actually an ondine. The girl immediately falls in love (so far as an ondine can) with the guest Knight. It takes Ashton and Henze a long time to jettison this commonplace setting. Meanwhile, Henze's diary wanders off into appreciation of Italian life.Henze goes to London to write the music and his diary shares the milieu with us. Designer Lila De Nobili comes over from Paris and joins in the ever-shifting ideas. Neo-Gothic settings and a Mediterranean locale are settled upon, and the months of work continue. Henze clues us in to his compositional thoughts, as in Act III where the surprising piano addition stems from the first seven notes of Scarlatti's "Cat's Fugue." Long delay while the ballet company goes on tour. But Henze records the orchestral score, an invaluable aid in finalizing the Ondine choreography. At the premiere in late 1959 Henze conducts. This short, intimate, delightful book is enriched with illustrations. Ten photos show us Fonteyn and Somes, the sets and corps for the three acts (the original sets were superior to the adaptations in the DVD), as well as a handwritten page of minutage. There are also seven costume sketches and five production sketches (De Nobili's art style is very loose).Henze is a first-class writer of prose, even in his personal diary. I've barely dented his autobiography, "Bohemian Fifths" (publ. in Germany 1996, then in English) but I foresee it's a treasure.

Do you consider yourself a hunter? If you have ever dated, played sports, or held a job, then your answer should be yes. We are always hunting―trying to track down and take the things we want, the things that will make our life bigger, better, safer; more satisfying, exciting, and just plain fun.

In The Hunt, serial entrepreneur, hunter, and OutdoorHub founder David Farbman offers a way of thinking about work, life, and our connection with the world based upon the ancient discipline of hunting. The Hunt will inspire anyone striving for more to think like hunters―with poise, concentration, and skill; to identify their targets; and, with focus, determination, and satisfaction, to achieve those goals.

Specifically, The Hunt shows how to

• Get a bigger, clearer picture of your life and goals, and discover things about yourself and your ability that you’ve never noticed or seen before;• Gain the hunter’s special skills at observation and perception, to understand your environment;• Learn “predatory consciousness”―the full understanding of your prey, whether business partners or competitors, so you can predict their actions;• Harness and leverage every opportunity to obtain your desired outcomes and inspire your best thinking;• Fully understand where to pick battles, and where not to “hunt” at all.

The principles of The Hunt will give you a clearer, sharper lens for seeing the world and shaping your role in it. You’ll make better decisions, form stronger alliances, build better strategies, target bigger wins, and uncover more opportunities. Best of all, you will become a true hunter when you know who you are, what you want, and how to get what you’re hunting for.

The Hunt: Target, Track, and Attain Your Goals, by David Farbman

Amazon.com Review David Farbman Q&A with David Farbman, author of The Hunt Who will benefit from The Hunt?

I wrote this book for anyone who needs to gain calm and clarity in life. Whether you’re more comfortable in the boardroom or the backwoods, The Hunt will help you learn to live and execute with more purpose, awareness, and openness to the great power of the natural order. The Hunt will show you how to go after your goals while still being true to who you are.

How does a hunter’s mindset help us clarify goals and go after them?

A hunter’s mindset allows you to learn to identify the difference between what is real and what is fear, and then take that knowledge to push past barriers to reach your desired outcomes. When you think like a hunter, you gain a heightened awareness, tap the primal instincts from within, and can take down your most meaningful targets. With predatory consciousness, you’ll understand how to be present at this moment in your life so you can recognize opportunity and know to seize it.

Why is it such a challenge to focus clearly on what we want to accomplish?

We all get hung up on the noise or the clutter of situations and lose perspective of what it is we really want. As a result, our targets get further and further out of sight and zone. While it’s easy for anyone to get overwhelmed, small changes lead to innovation. There is always time to take a new tactic. The principles of The Hunt are designed to provide a clearer, sharper lens for seeing the world. You’ll learn to make better decisions, form stronger alliances, build superior strategies, target bigger wins, and uncover more opportunities.

How did you become a hunter? And how has hunting changed you?

I was a crazy, energetic kid. I give my parents an incredible amount of credit for recognizing my need to connect with nature on a very basic level. That connection has allowed me, throughout my life, to return to the woods and fields to find calm and clarity, to be able to step out of my busy mind and tap into my authentic self, the part of me that is wholly my own without judgment. Some of the most profound moments of my life have happened in a tree stand, where I could literally see farther, beyond the clutter that blocked my view. So I’ve been developing the ideas in The Hunt for my entire life. Now I am able to find that same clarity and calm within myself wherever I am. That mindset allows me to cut through negative, sometimes overwhelming messaging, so business decisions are clear-cut and focused. For me personally, it is easier to shed the past and live in the moment.

From the Inside Flap

Do you consider yourself a hunter?

If you have ever dated, played sports, or held a job, then your answer should be yes. We are always hunting—trying to track down and take the things we want, the things that will make our life bigger, better, safer, more satisfying, exciting, and just plain fun.

In The Hunt, serial entrepreneur, hunter, and OutdoorHub founder David Farbman offers a way of thinking about work, life, and our connection with the world based upon the ancient discipline of hunting. The Hunt will inspire anyone striving for more to think like hunters—with poise, concentration, and skill, to identify their targets and, with focus, determination, and satisfaction, to achieve those goals.

Specifically, The Hunt shows how to:

  • Get a bigger, clearer picture of your life and goals, and discover things about yourself and your ability that you’ve never noticed or seen before
  • Gain the hunter’s special skills at observation and perception, to understand your environment
  • Learn “predatory consciousness”—the full understanding of your prey, whether business partners or competitors, so you can predict their actions
  • Harness and leverage every opportunity to obtain your desired outcomes and inspire your best thinking
  • Fully understand where to pick battles, and where not to “hunt” at all

The principles of The Hunt will give you a clearer, sharper lens for seeing the world and shaping your role in it. You’ll make better decisions, form stronger alliances, build better strategies, target bigger wins, and uncover more opportunities. Best of all, you will become a true hunter when you know who you are, what you want, and how to get what you’re hunting for.

May be more convincing and useful if you are well-versed in the hunting culture By Amazonian Consumer David Farbman's insists that we humans are still hunters even in this day and age, so we need five specific qualities to optimize our ability to attain our goals:Getting Up, Getting Clear: ConsciousnessKeeping it Real: AuthenticityTaking Trophies: LeverageBringing it Home: Real-Time ExecutionFinding Flow and Leaving a Clean WakeI believe the author's hunter analogy may be more convincing for readers who can relate to the process of hunting. For those who do not hunt, like me, I found this analogy unhelpful in learning about strategic planning.

Okay at best By Preston True I'm sure Farbman has had much success, but his story didn't hold my interest and many of the ideas were simply existing common sense said differently. If he had a more engaging story to tell, he'd capture readers' attention better.

By Jeff Lippincott Another book on strategic planning. I've read a ton of them. This one is written by someone who as a kid was taught to hunt animals and kill them. He's used his experiences as a hunter to help describe the process of strategic planning. If he'd been a competitive cyclist, then he'd have used his winning experiences to describe the process. And if he'd become a great chef or cook, then he'd have used his cooking experiences to describe the process of strategic planning.I didn't really see anything new or novel in this book. The pages were small, the line spacing was kind of wide, and the margins were not too tight. The page count capped out at 200. Kind of hard to even call this thing a book since it was so short. Only 5 chapters, and I didn't really think they did the subject matter of tome justice. There are many other books out there that do a better job of explaining strategic planning. One that comes to mind used the example of archer. It's hard for an archer to hit the bullseye if he is wearing a blindfold. But if he takes the blindfold off and aims true for his target he will probably hit it. This would seem to sum up the 200 pages of this book. One might even call an archer a hunter. 3 stars!
