He painted trees as by some special divining instinct of their essential qualities. He understood them. He knew why in an oak forest, for instance, each individual was utterly distinct from its fellows, and why no two beeches in the whole world were alike. People asked him down to paint a favorite lime or silver birch, for he caught the individuality of a tree as some catch the individuality of a horse. How he managed it was something of a puzzle, for he never had painting lessons, his drawing was often wildly inaccurate, and, while his perception of a Tree Personality was true and vivid, his rendering of it might almost approach the ludicrous. Yet the character and personality of that particular tree stood there alive beneath his brush—shining, frowning, dreaming, as the case might be, friendly or hostile, good or evil.

About the Author Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) was born into a well-to-do Kentish family. His parents, converts to a Calvinistic sect, led an austere life, ill-suited to their dreamy and sensitive son. During adolescence, he became fascinated by hypnotism and the supernatural and, on leaving university, studied Hindu philosophy and occultism. Later, he was to draw on these beliefs and experiences in his writing. Sent away to Canada at the age of twenty, his attempts at making a living were wholly unsuccessful and shortly after his return to England, he began to write. The Empty House and Other Ghost Stories, published in 1906, was followed by a series of psychic detective stories, featuring John Silence, 'physician extraordinary'. His reputation as one of the greatest exponents of supernatural fiction began to grow. Chiefly known for his ghost stories, Blackwood wrote in many different forms within the genre. His most personal works, however, are his 'mystical' novels, for example The Centaur, where he explores man's empathy with the forces of the universe. Blackwood also wrote children's fiction. A Prisoner in Fairyland was adapted into the play (later the musical), Starlight Express. Later in life, Blackwood turned to writing radio plays, and in 1947 he began a new career on BBC TV telling ghost stories. He received a knighthood in 1949.

B. is always great at decribing nature and it's lure, and how man is drawn to it. but nothing much happens, and some of the dialogue is unnecessary. (the story is actually a short story)

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Haunting story, very well written By Ms Beastle I've enjoyed Algernon Blackwood stories for a long time. This is one of my favorites. Re-reading it on my Kindle was a wonderful experience. His writing style is easy-going, and he allows the reader to "see" into the characters. The descriptions of the forests and trees were spooky, and the interaction between the main characters was so poignant. Not a long story, but one you will remember.

Excellent prose and an interesting Idea, but too long and predictable By Walter Stanley On the positive side, Blackwood's prose is quite beautiful, and the idea behind the story is rather haunting. The contrast between the primitive Christianity of the man's wife and the pantheistic view of the husband is thoughtfully presented, and presents an interesting view of the world. On the negative side, the story goes on for long after the eventual outcome is obvious, so I was looking forward to the ending so I wouldn't have to continue reading it. Only the quality of the prose kept me going, and perhaps the hope that it might it differently than projected.

I am glad you got healthier By Jessica I am glad you got healthier, however, you used the "simple science" in your title, requiring science to actually be talked about and shared. Not just a story of what most women go through to lose weight and what one simple google search will tell them. This is a blog post at most.

I am so glad that I discovered this book.As a woman in her late 30's who has struggled with weight loss for almost twenty years, this book and the contents therein really hit home. The author takes the reader through her story of emotional eating and weight gain, and how she finally got it under control.Learning how to take control of which foods one eats is the true key to get the weight off and keep it off. Eating the wrong foods is toxic to weight loss. The right combination of foods combined with exercise can have a tremendous effect on weight loss, and the author discovered this after many struggles. She found that fad diets and diet pills didn't work for her, and she worked hard to find a solution that would work for her long term.Some wonderful ideas and tips are found in this book, and I am grateful to the author for her suggestions that I hadn't previously thought of or tried. I wish you all the very best of luck with your weight loss challenges and goals.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. not the typical romance novel By cookiecountess There are a lot of contributions to the romance realm, obviously, but this book is not the typical formula. It takes place during the holidays in Chicago, and it features two people who used to be an item but things ended badly because the male lead had some issues. But now that his love interest is back in his life, the male lead has to make some modifications in an attempt to win her back. The problem is that, while she still clearly loves him, she has tried to move on and does not want to be hurt again. Do they get back together? Or is Ryan the same old guy? This book is fast-moving and you'll need to really keep up.

There were surprises with the characters and the plot had twists and turns which kept your attention all the way through the book. A delightful read!

The gist of most of it is clear, but many of those items are the things you heard from an elder relative at some point.It's OK for free, if you can get past the sentence fragments and general lack of structure. The author needs a friend to edit for his or her next publication to make it more of a trustworthy resource.

By Vincent Having done boy scouts for some time, I remember how challenging it can be to find your way back home if you don’t have a map or compass. I did get lost a few times, with an entire group, and I guess we could have used this little handy book. It talks about using the sun, the stars, natural landmarks, etc.

By Billy Bob Shazaaam I haven't bowled in Years, so I needed a refresher.I guess for someone that has been bowling for 85 years and can keep scores in their sleep, this might not be the book.But for me, this was heaven. Just the Facts Jack. I needed the basics,how to think about bowling perfectly, how toget this old body ready for the game, and to cover the fundamentals and physics of the game. This book did all of thatfor me and I am very glad to have it in my library.

The book shows its age in the early section, referencing free fall machines, which are (sadly) almost now entirely obsolete. However, the content in the second half of the book remains excellent, with diagrams for both right- and left-handed bowlers. Also some good instructions on how to adjust when you are making errors.

How I wish I could be an expert in playing bowling but I think I need to practice more. Good thing I got this book, there's a lot of information from here where I learn lot of techniques in order to be properly played, improved the way I play and acquire more positions to play well.

Realizing they can be as traumatic as to the big brutes playing college and NFL football, he presents both sides of the argument of to play or not to play tackle football before age 14, equipment safety, and parental responsibilities. The more he researched long-term effects, the more worried he became about allowing kids play anything other than flag football before their bodies are strong enough to take full-force impacts. In his book Alan comprehensively discusses tackle football at the youth level; the coaches who manage the sport; the upsides and pitfalls of today’s equipment; and what parents can do to help prevent injuries to their children. He reached out to professionals in the industry (Coaches Mike Miller and Matt Wells; receiver and tight end John Madsen; and Connie Jones, Certified Athletic Trainer) to get their take on whether kids should be allowed to play before age 14, and the safety of equipment today. Going beyond just discussing parent and coach involvement in making sure equipment is up-to-date and is fitted well, he discusses the history of helmets; proper tackling techniques; conditioning to prevent injuries; the signs of a concussion; and studies about correct protocols to allow a player back on the field. Alan challenges the overall safety of youth football, including playing hurt versus injured just to win a game. Putting the responsibility on the coach’s shoulders, he discusses good coaching versus bad coaching, and whether to allow a kid to play based on their fear factor. Realizing the increased awareness among the NFL and sports experts about the long-term ramifications of repetitive concussions, he discusses an interview with Tom Farrey titled Study: Impact of Youth Head Hits Severe, where Lisa McHale – the wife of former NFL player, Tom McHale -- shared how their life was negatively impacted by the game of football. He also discusses how the responsibility of making sure their kids can enjoy the sport while being protected falls on parents’ shoulders: * Every parent should ask if tackle football is safe for their children. * Do they allow their children to play tackle football without knowing the potential risk of injuries? * Do they understand the potential long-term effects of suffering a concussion?
