Ralph De Silva has been involved with the development of high speed outboard racing boats his entire life. His father began boat building in 1927. He and his brother Bill took over the business in 1947 and continued designing and building the most successful boats used by outboard racing drivers in the American Power Boat Association for over 70 years. Ralph has written a very interesting book about the people and the theory and design of small high speed race boats. The history of outboard racing has been populated with many interesting and talented people. Here Ralph tells the story of many of the people that have become legends of the sport. It is like sitting in the pits with Ralph at some race course around the country listening to his stories. This is a book that only Ralph could have written and is a book that everyone who ever raced a De Silva boat should have.

His memoirs of racing and his knowledge of racing runabout boat design is way, way beyond anyone else. It is an interesting read by an interesting man. DeSilva tells of his first hand knowledge of any and everyone who was anything in the field of boat racing from the 1930’s right thru to today. Great book!!Dick Charmley

It is not true that a rose by any other name will smell as sweet. Were it true, I should call this story "The Great Orley Farm Case." But who would ask for the ninth number of a serial work burthened with so very uncouth an appellation? Thence, and therefore,—Orley Farm. I say so much at commencing in order that I may have an opportunity of explaining that this book of mine will not be devoted in any special way to rural delights. The name might lead to the idea that new precepts were to be given, in the pleasant guise of a novel, as to cream-cheeses, pigs with small bones, wheat sown in drills, or artificial manure.

Orley Farm, by Anthony Trollope

Review 'Brilliantly choreographed legal thriller'.- Craig Brown, The Mail on Sunday, 1.8.99

From the Back Cover With its concern for social issues and its extensive coverage of middle-class and landed life, Orley Farm is a novel that demands attention in the rich field of nineteenth-century fiction.

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

50 of 50 people found the following review helpful. Trollope at his best! By Leonard L. Wilson Orley Farm is Trollope at his best (as good as the Barsetshire series), which means some of the best characterizations in the English language. Trollope's people are real; the beleaguered Lady Mason, charged with forging a will; the aged lover Sir Peregrine Orme; Madeleine Stavely, deeply but practically in love; the shallow, fickle Sophia Furnival and others are 3-dimensional figures that live and breathe. His satire of the so-called "justice" system is the best kind of satire: he just describes the court proceedings as they really are. The result is as up-to-date as today's newspaper. It is no wonder that Trollope's revival in popularity is continuing to grow.

20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. An elegant, subtle undermining of the legal system. By A Customer Orley Farm is Trollope at his most profound, and his most entertaining. It is difficult to ascertain what is best in this novel: the subtle, incisive examination of how legal systems cannot be impartial and, more fundamentally, how humankind looks after its own regardless of right and wrong; or the episodic journey with some of Trollope's most memorable (and always three dimensional) characters - the 'wrong' but completely empathic Lady Mason, the fiercely honourable Sir Peregrine Orme, the virile young Peregrine Orme and, most memorably, the gentle overwhelmed but staunchly loyal Mrs Orme - undergoing the pangs of Trollope's drama amidst ancient piles, undulating hedgerows and sequestered English fields.

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Deja Vu All Over Again By A Customer Orley is simply timeless. Just as in the Palliser series, the characters are the people all around you, in the office, in the news, and on the tube. Trollope's ability to understand the subtle differences that shape the mind of men and women is simply uncanny. If you are a truth seeker, this is a book for you. Anyone with exposure to a legal system with its basis in the English common law will understand the perceptive analysis it is subjected to in Orley Farm. The distinction between evil deeds and the often sympathetic humans that are their authors is one that modern American culture often forgets to make. Orley Farm is here to remind us. As a trusts and estates lawyer, I can not believe that I practiced for fifteen years before someone told me about this gem.

A boy in a blue serge suit sat on the second tier of seats of an otherwise empty grand-stand and, with his straw hat pulled well over his eyes, watched the progress of a horse-drawn mower about a field. The horse was a big, well-fed chestnut, and as he walked slowly along he bobbed his head rhythmically. In the seat of the mower perched a thin little man in a pair of blue overalls and a shirt which had also been blue at one time, but which was now faded almost white. A broad-brimmed straw hat of the sort affected by farmers, protected his head from the noonday sun.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. great story By Beverly Clark What a great read! I bought this book as it looked like a lighthearted fun read and I really enjoyed it.The story revolved around a single dad and a variety of his escapades as a parent. One being that he coaches his daughter’s cheerleading team when the real coach becomes unable to do so. The stories are great and there are many laugh out loud moments. Jerry a blue collar sort of guy is definitely out of his element as a cheerleading coach and that makes for some great situations to unfold.Call me old fashioned but it was nice to read a book without a lot of profanity laced in it. Actually I don’t recall seeing any profanity. This was a good book and I hope to see more stories about Jerry.

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. an outstanding account about real men who became soldiers of fortune... By James Hobbs This is an outstanding account about real men who became soldiers of fortune. Some were cheered as heroes and others were shunned or even banished by their own countrymen, but all lived fascinating lives. Davis leaves no intriguing character out. This wonderful book covers a wide range of soldiers of fortune from the beloved to the notorious, from celebrated men like Winston Churchill to outcasts like Captain Philo Norton McGriffin, from geniuses like William Walker to men who set up their own fiefdoms like Baron James Harden-Hickey.Richard Harding Davis was not only an excellent novelist but also one of the best reporters of all time. He clearly drew from the immense experience he'd gained from traveling the globe and being at the center of history and politics when he wrote his outstanding works. As a war correspondent he had seen his share of action and adventure, so when he penned this wonderful look into the lives of men of action, he was truly following the adage, "write what you know."This book will take you on a thrilling ride that you won't forget. You will feel as if you are right alongside these soldiers of fortune on the field and in the war room. His wonderfully descriptive prose really makes you feel like you're actually there, and he does such a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life that you feel like they could stroll into the room at any moment.Davis truly gives these men their due, including a few who were misunderstood in their time. I strongly recommend this book and all of Richard Harding Davis' other works. He is the master of this genre.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Davis delivers another brilliant masterwork By John Drake I picked this book up, because I'm a big fan of Richard Harding Davis' works. I just love his style. He paints pictures with words so wonderfully. In this book he does the same as he paints detailed portraits of the greatest soldiers of fortune of all time except with a pen rather than a brush. I personally think that Davis is the king of this particular style though. This wonderful book was penned by a man who was intimately familiar with the world in all its wonderful and terrible glory. As a top journalist and war correspondent Davis had seen and experienced it all, and this uniquely qualified him to write thrilling works from the perspective of someone in the know. He writes his books the way that only an insider can, not an insider sitting on the throne of power, but one who is standing right there next to it, hearing and seeing everything, when he isn't out in the field dodging bullets. In this book he tells the stories of a wide variety of soldiers of fortune. Though I'm a big fan of Churchill, my favorites were the ones who became outcasts such as McGriffin and Walker and some of the other `colorful' characters. Whether they were hailed as rogues or heroes, they were all very courageous men who led fascinating lives. This is an excellent book, and a perfect example of the punches Davis is able to deliver. These men's stories were great, and Davis' accounting of their lives was wonderful and gave me a lot to think about. I highly recommend this book. It reads like a great adventure.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Real Men or Fearless Fools? By ColW Great read. Specially the chapter on young Winston. There was some detail in this I had not read before. The other unknowns were certainly worthy of their places in this book. Interesting point that this book appears to have been written about 1930?? Anyway, there is much to like about the gung ho attitude of these "soldiers" as it is most believable and when looking for modern day equivalents stands alone without challenge. Take a quick read. I am sure you will find it enjoyable.

I have always been much interested by the traditions which are scattered up and down North Wales relating to Owen Glendower (Owain Glendwr is the national spelling of the name), and I fully enter into the feeling which makes the Welsh peasant still look upon him as the hero of his country. There was great joy among many of the inhabitants of the principality, when the subject of the Welsh prize poem at Oxford, some fifteen or sixteen years ago, was announced to be “Owain Glendwr.” It was the most proudly national subject that had been given for years.

According to Steve Raymond, tying flies requires “imagination and skill, creativity and discipline, patience and vision.” But for the fly fisher, tying flies is more than that—it is the creation of a living insect from fur, feathers, or synthetic materials and is an art and a passion.Blue Upright discusses the fly patterns that have served Steve Raymond most faithfully over the years. There are well-known and famous flies, such as the Crazy Charlie; there are flies that wouldn’t be recognized outside of the Pacific Northwest; and, more interestingly, there are flies of his own creation, which he uses alone or shares with only a few close friends. Here, he shares not only the flies but also the stories that go along with some of those flies, which include the Carey Special, Thompson’s Delectable Chronomoid, the Green Machine, and the Blue Upright. Each of Steve Raymond’s favorite flies call to mind memories of landscapes, anglers, and fish that have passed through his life, and each of his stories will appeal to beginners and experienced fly tyers alike.Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Blue Upright: The Flies of a Lifetime, by Steve Raymond

From Publishers Weekly Taking its name from one of the author's favorite fly patterns, this book takes a look at the top dozen fly fishing lures in Raymond's vast tackle collection. Focusing on one fly at a time, Raymond breaks down each fly's origins, how it is made and how and for what fish he employs it. Most importantly, Raymond uses these rather technical fishing narratives as an impetus to explore cherished personal memories as well as a host of fishing and related nonfishing topics close to his heart. Some of Raymond's tangents are strictly for diehard fishermen, as when he discusses the many fly boxes, in various shapes and sizes, that he keeps his precious flies in or when he looks at various controversies over who first tied a fly pattern. Other memories are more universal, as when he muses about the last time he fished with his father or when he wonders what his favorite river might have looked like 200 years ago. Raymond's storytelling and writing skills enable him to seamlessly work these varied topics into cohesive chapters that both inform and amuse. And no matter where Raymond's thoughts take him, he's always able to convey how each of these tiny fishing flies has affected his life in a big way. Illus. Review Few angler-authors can match the skill and insight of Steve Raymond...Through the seasons of the angler's year, Raymond leads his reader to a refined and refreshed understanding of what the natural world is really all about. --Nelson Bryant, The New York TimesWith Blue Upright, Steve Raymond proves once again why he is the Raymond Carver of fly-fish lit. With elegant, unadorned precision, Steve offers the biographies of his favorite flies, which blossom into an autobiography of Steve Raymond and a history of fly-fishing for salmon, trout and steelhead in the Pacific Northwest, with side trips after bonefish and Atlantic salmon. It is complex wisdom simply presented, and belongs on any literate fly-fisher¹s bookshelf. James R. Babb, Editor, Gray¹s Sporting Journal

From the Back Cover For the fly fisher, creating images of a living insect from fur, feathers, or synthetic materials is an art and a passion requiring “imagination and skill, creativity and discipline, patience and vision,” according to renowned fly tyer and author Steve Raymond. The fly patterns in Blue Upright are among those that have served Raymond most faithfully over the years, the favorite flies of a long angling life. Some flies, such as the Crazy Charlie, are widely known; others are relatively unknown outside of the Pacific Northwest. Included are some of his own patterns which he uses alone or shares with only a few close friends. Let him share some of his fly recipes and warm-hearted, crisply detailed fishing stories with you as he describes the Carey Special, Thompson’s Delectable Chironomid, the Green Machine, and, of course, the Blue Upright, among others. All of Raymond’s personal favorites evoke vivid memories of the landscapes and the anglers (and the fish) that have passed through his life, images guaranteed to appeal to both beginning and experienced fly tyers. As followers of the hobby willconfirm, tying flies need not be an art of perfection when the only critics that matter are the fish.In Blue Upright you’ll discover:* Flies with bad hair days and lower-back problems* How a controversial judge got a steelhead fly named after him* Why some flies work and then mysteriously stop working* The invention of Steve Raymond’s lethal Chironomid Suspender and Emerger* Why the TDC influenced modern Northwest fly fishing more than any other pattern* The origin of the Son of Salmon Candy* Why the bonefish is the almost-perfect fly-fishing quarry* f0 Why flies are important for other reasons than catching fish

I use them as motivation for getting out of the house and on the water. Raymond's accounts can get tiresome if read all at once. However, a story here and there is just right. The writing style can be stilted at times, but I am convinced the author's heart and soul are in the right place.

Intermediate or advanced tyers should have no problem constructing the patterns. This guy knows how to write an interesting & entertaining story. If you are a flytyer/flyfisher I believe you will enjoy this book as much as I did. Blue Upright: The Flies of a Lifetime was so good I purchased several of his earlier titles Angler Gift Box: The Year of the Angler and the Year of the Troutbecause I enjoy his writing style. Highly recommended addition to your sporting library.

By Gloria Griffith I bought this but it was under my wife's name/account.Very good book if you are into fly fishing and dress flies for a hobby.Steve Raymond is an excellent writer and tells a good story.Alas, some of the issues seem to be gone from the PNW forever.Progress? Maybe not,

That homely proverb, used on so many occasions in England, viz. “That what is bred in the bone will not go out of the flesh,” was never more verified than in the story of my Life. Any one would think that after thirty-five years’ affliction, and a variety of unhappy circumstances, which few men, if any, ever went through before, and after near seven years of peace and enjoyment in the fulness of all things; grown old, and when, if ever, it might be allowed me to have had experience of every state of middle life, and to know which was most adapted to make a man completely happy; I say, after all this, any one would have thought that the native propensity to rambling which I gave an account of in my first setting out in the world to have been so predominant in my thoughts, should be worn out, and I might, at sixty one years of age, have been a little inclined to stay at home, and have done venturing life and fortune any more.

I read the first book and was left wondering what had happened later. The book is written in such a descriptive tone that I felt like I was watching a movie while reading.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Another timeless classic. By Bill Bickley This is Dafoe's sequel to his Robinson Crusoe novel. This is an excellent story that some say is based on an actual person. I encourage readers to read Robinson Crusoe first and then this book. This is another terrific book to share with younger family members. What a great way to interest children in classic fiction. Definitely worth two thumbs up!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Redundant By Cg35 Ok, not near as captivating as his first Robinson Crusoe adventure on the island. I'm having difficulty finishing the book because he just goes "on and on" with the same stuff in a different setting. Two chapters are devoted entirely to religion being preached to the reader through the characters. That has its place but if I wanted a book on religion I would have purchased one in the religious section. I like his writing style very much but he ran out of fresh material...something like trying to do a good movie sequel and somewhat failing at it.

THE history of the Victorian Age will never be written; we know too much about it. For ignorance is the first requisite of the historian—ignorance, which simplifies and clarifies, which selects and omits, with a placid perfection unattainable by the highest art. Concerning the Age which has just passed, our fathers and our grandfathers have poured forth and accumulated so vast a quantity of information that the industry of a Ranke would be submerged by it, and the perspicacity of a Gibbon would quail before it.

I believe that is the reason Reginald always will telegraph when he is coming,' said Miss Adeline Mohun, a very pretty, well preserved, though delicate-looking lady of some age about forty, as her elder sister, brisk and lively and some years older, came into the room. 'No, it is not Reggie. It is from Lily. Poor Lily! Jasper—accident—Come.' 'Poor dear Lily! Is it young Jasper or old Jasper, I wonder?'

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a relief from modern fiction By pamela friedland It has a kind of innocence that is no longer treated as a vehicle for good writing. An upper class families' many children are scattered to friends and relatives because the mother has gone to care for the father who is a highranking officer in the British army in India. The children, from teenagers to tots, are trying to adapt to their new households. much of their experience could be out of one of the books in my girlhood library at school. However the quality of the writing and the convincing characters hold ones interest, a Mrs Gaskell kind of book treating small events with respect and even dignity.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Charlotte Mary Yonge's books provide an intimate picture of English ... By aisling Charlotte Mary Yonge's books provide an intimate picture of English aristocracy in the turn of the 20th century. There is a slight similarity to Jane Austin's novels due to both authoresses writing about the same level of society during the same period. However, Ms. Yonge's deep religious beliefs constitute much of her characterization and tone.

The 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates were a special team--team being the operative word. There were no superstars, although Roberto Clemente would become one, and nobody had a record season. The Battling Bucs frequently came from behind to win late in the game, with Pirates broadcaster Bob Prince signing off, "We had 'em all the way." Pittsburgh was the Sad Sack of baseball through most of the 1950s, and as the Pirates grabbed the National League lead early in the 1960 season, fans wondered if the guys in vest-shirts and black sleeves could indeed hang on.

And then there was the World Series, the one everybody but the Pirates thought would be won by the Yankees, in which Bill Mazeroski provided the most dramatic finish of all sports championships. This book, featuring interviews with Clemente, Dick Groat, Bob Friend and Dick Schofield, chronicles the Pirates of 1960--a team of friends--and their push through a long and magical season.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A very special team! By JN It is obvious that the author truly knows and loves the Pittsburg Pirates. Every player has a story, and it is told as if the author had a ringside seat with them. I particularly liked the capsule reports at the end sharing what has happened to the 1960 Pittsburg Pirates. There is much research and homework that went into this piece, and to Pirates fans, greatly appreciated. Which brings to mind: it is likely that most of Mumau's research was done years before he wrote this book. In response to the question regarding his interview with Clemente, at the end of the book, Note 8 for Chapter 11 provides this information: Roberto Clemente, interview with the author, August 1,1970.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fine book but the subject has been covered numerous times By clemente_in_right I'm on the fence about this book. Its a fine book - no serious issues. But I also have a hard time recommending it in part because in the last ten years so many books have been written about the 1960 Pirates or the 1960 World Series. I count eight books going back to 2007 that have been written on this subject matter, not counting biographies about key players in the series. So, if you have read a lot about this team already, I'm sad to say there isn't anything new here. Even with interviews from a handful of players (including one of Clemente from 1970), there are no new revelations or bits of critical information that haven't already been reported. If you have yet to dive into any of the other books, this is a fine place to begin.Mumau tackles the subject matter by mingling the story of the 1960 season with brief biographies and backgrounds on the players involved. For the most part, this works well. Although at times the author repeats himself (mentioning multiple times that the 1960 Pirates had no established stars and that Clemente had yet to become 'The Great One') and at times he goes completely off topic, referencing other events from 1960 that had little to do with the Pirates, such as the fight between Billy Martin (playing for the Reds) and Jim Brewer (then a rookie with the Cubs) and Warren Spahn's no hitter. The most disappointing aspect of the book is a revelation that the author never expounded on. Twice Mumau (page 134 and page 205) mentions that one Pittsburgh sportswriter openly campaigned against Clemente's 1960 MVP candidacy. That's something I'd never heard about or read about. Something new! But, Mumau fails to name the writer and fails to attribute any direct quotes. It seems like an odd thing to bring up without fully shining light on it.Another larger issue is how Mumau treats Vern Law's ankle injury. Mumau correctly states that reports at the time stated Law had injured his ankle by slipping on the slick locker room floor during the pennant clinching celebration. What Mumau doesn't elaborate on is that those reports were incorrect and that one of the recent books on the 1960 season (Kiss it Goodbye by John Moody) gets to the bottom of what happened to Law's ankle. There are a couple of issues with some facts that should've been caught. Particularly with two stories from Roy Face. In one incorrect story, Face recounts giving up a 10th inning game winning homer to Stan Musial in St. Louis that ended a 21 inning scoreless streak. Face did give up a walk off homer to Musial on 8/27/60. But it was a 9th inning homer and Face didn't carry a long scoreless streak into the at bat. Mumau also recounts a story in which Face entered a game with two runners on and got out of the inning by picking off both runners and retiring the batter with one pitch. No such game exists in Face's MLB career as he never recorded more than one pick off or caught stealing in the same inning. There are also a couple of typographical errors. The most obvious of which is listing Bob Prince's death in 1975 instead of 1985.As there should be, there is a full index, full chapter notes and a bibliography. As a stand alone, this is a four star book and that's how I'm judging it. In the context of all the other recent material, I'd give it three stars.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By Sarah Longe Thad Mumau makes you wish you could go back in time and attend these games in 1960!
