Three politicians jockey for position in the early part of 2008. Senator Robert Fox has already secured his party's nomination, but Senators Jeannette Freddo Reynolds and Thaddeus Tasman are locked in a dogfight for theirs. A load of highly dangerous weapons is in transit from the Arizona manufacturer to Fort Hood, Texas. A very sophisticated hijack plot interrupts their journey and the President, his Cabinet, and the U.S. military have to figure out how to get them out of the wrong hands. Early in his first of three tours in Vietnam, Detective Hunter Morgan learned never to say the following: "Well, things can't get any worse than this!" They can and do when a sniper starts shooting in Baltimore. Railroad catastrophes take place on both sides of the country and terrorists strike two major American airports, driving the elections news into the background temporarily, until one of the primary candidates turns up missing . . . last seen with a Secret Service Agent.

"Primary Candidates" by Mike Sutton By Mary Deremer I would like to commend Mike Sutton on yet another rip roaring, bomb blasting, enemy seeking, target hitting ride in "Primary Candidates". And , dare I say, if he had planned the initial attack on Vietnam, instead of the pen pushing polititions in Washington, there would have been NO war there. That would have been all of the "advice" they would have needed. With all of Mike's personal experience, his vast knowledge in tactics, weaponsry, munitions, logistics, etc., added to his very likable and capable charactors from previous books, "Primary Candidates" is another WINNER!!!I can hardly wait for the next one.

By Amazon Customer A riveting book that is well researched with an intriguing plot involving many of today's real world politics and dangers. The main character is the type of man who we all wish were defending us. It is a must read for anyone who likes thrillers, action and suspense. It was hard to put down

The result of a pilgrimage, Rise and Fall; Rise records a journey of faith nurtured in the heart of a loving family, tested by a terminal illness and lifted into new life beside a deathbed. The poems created by this paradox—of God's words of grace spoken in the most graceless of times—were composed by the author on sabbatical from Copenhagen, Denmark to Oslo, Norway to Ojochal, Costa Rica. It is in all ways a labor of love: of praise, gratitude and thanksgiving to God.

By Ron Josenberg Rise and Fall; Rise is an intense plunge into the impossible- Kari Hart's moments bearing witness to life of a beloved coming to an end. It is neither melancholy nor an immature prance past the tombs. It is jagged and clean in technique, not self-indulgent nor concerned with its' pace or rhythm or meter; it is a bounty of spirituality devoid of horses***. To read Rise and Fall; Rise is to know everything wont be okay and then it is.

By Joanna Laufer A masterful and memorable collection of poems that brings the reader into compelling worlds and moments, moving the heart so deeply. Faith and loss are themes that at first seem to be in conflict and opposition but are woven together in an exceptionally heartfelt and courageous way. An absolutely stunning debut.

Brilliant, elusive, touching meditation on Daughters and Fathers, Daughters and Gods, Daughters in the world By Hugh Gilmore Recommended to me by a friend, I read Kari Hart's poetry book in one sitting. And thus it came and settled in my heart as though it were a single story. The fact that it is a poetry book would make it seem that it's a collection of individual poems. Instead, I experienced this short book as a single moving unit that affected me deeply. A prism held this way and that. What I took away was her deeply felt desire to express the feelings and insights that hover just this side of clarity...the experience of feeling, knowing the truth is nearby if one can only find the words, remove the noise, the unessential distractions and listen...many of the individual poems express this touching theme. Even a walk in the Costa Rican woods provokes this need to just go around the next turn of the path.....But with this flirtation with the inevitable truths as she nears them is fear and anger and a desire to keep time from moving forward,,,the need to express what she wants and needs to say, but with the knowledge that it can only be gained by moving towards it.But at what cost does she move forward? The middle section finds her forced into the present as she becomes a witness to her beloved father's decline, transmogrification, and death. The process is captured in details that are amusing, horrible, and touching – the unnoticed parts of daily life suddenly given life and moved to the foreground. And throughout: a quest to understand the spiritual dimension of life, accept it, seek it, challenge it, wrestle with it, ask it to prove itself. I read a short book of poetry, but felt it as though I'd read a personal and philosophical novel.Hugh Gilmore

My father, Andréj Petróvitch Grineff, after serving in his youth under Count Münich, had retired in 17—with the rank of senior major. Since that time he had always lived on his estate in the district of Simbirsk, where he married Avdotia, the eldest daughter of a poor gentleman in the neighbourhood. Of the nine children born of this union I alone survived; all my brothers and sisters died young.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Speedy and insightful By Paulie Walnuts An easy-to-read introduction to Russian prose, The Captain's Daughter/The Daughter of the Commandant is a short, but furiously paced, insight into the life of a young soldier posted to a fort near Orenburg during the Pugachev rebellion. Pushkin's text, or at least the English translation, is effortlessly fluid and exceedingly rich at the same time.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Incomplete work By Andres Caballero I read the work through and through for a Russian Literature Class. I have worked a little on translating myself and considered the translation rather good in capturing the way Pushkin wrote, that is, in a very transparent, clear and to the point way. But, and this is a really big BUT, the version has omitted some fragments that are immensely important to the novel. I don't know if it was done by the translator or the transcriber, if by folly or by intention, but you will not find any of the epigraphs or the short but rather important fable of the eagle and the crow told by Putgacheff to Grinneff in the carriage they are travelling towards the end.I wouldn't recomend this version. Look for another one or buy one that has been edited with more responsibility.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Easy read, simple story. By Shadowreader This is a fairly straightforward story of a young and naive young soldier serving in the hinterlands of Russia during the reign of Catherine the Great. There is a "coming of age" aspect. Despite somewhat limited description and sense of place, we are transported to another place and era, with different priorities and sensibilities. The story is easy to read and seems like a easy introduction to Russian literature.Formatting: Several awkward line breaks. The original has multiple endnotes explaining untranslated Russian terms and patronymics. These are not hyperlinked so you'd have to jump to the end and then back. I found the old style spelling of Russian names to be slightly annoying, but that's nitpicky.Good value!

What you have been taught, lover of the sublime, is a lie that made you live a lie... In the 21st century, a scalpel slices bible pages, passages spliced to restore lost truth. In the days of King Herod, the messias rises, calling to black sheep: walk with me. Now, here, between two aeons and across Æternity, a beloved student rebuilds his Gospel for the era of Anonymous: anarchist, socialist, atheist, revolutionary. Forget the tale you were spun and open your ears to the teacher who said, I will have mercy and not sacrifice. From the Hebridean fishing village of Capernaum, to a Jerusalem under Il Duce Pontius Pilate. The Empire ends today.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Mystical Gnostic Take on the New Testament By Douglas I just finished this book, so my thoughts on it will probably develop over time. In this review I just want to share that Duncan has done a great job of bringing the gospels to life as one might experience them. The text of the book alternates between a vision of the life of Jesus (here referred to as Joshua) and the experiences and views of a "reader" experiencing and making sense of those stories. The narrator is developed wonderfully over the course of the book, with some pretty big surprises along the way. In perspective, I suppose this book would be called gnostic, though not exactly in a form I'm familiar with. I should also mention that my appreciation of the book does not arise from agreement with the author's take on the meaning of the story of Joshua/Jesus; I do not agree with his conclusions. Nonetheless, I won't hesitate to say it's a brilliant and engrossing book, well worth the time of anyone interested in the experience of Christianity, mysticism, or just a great read. While it isn't essential to the enjoyment of this book, familiarity with The Gospel of Thomas, the one paragraph we have from The Secret Gospel of Mark, and maybe Philip K. Dick's Valis will enrich your reading of this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A clever, thought-provoking and brilliantly written novel! By "Seregil of Rhiminee" Because I enjoyed reading Hal Duncan's The Book of All Hours duology (Vellum and Ink), Escape from Hell! and the speculative fiction anthology, Caledonia Dreamin' (Eibonvale Press, 2013), which he co-edited with Chris Kelso, I was eager to read Testament. I was mesmerised by it, because it was something totally different and turned to be an intriguing and thought-provoking novel.Testament is something truly unique from Hal Duncan. It has been a long time in the making and now that it has finally been finished and published, readers have an opportunity to immerse themselves into its world. It's a novel that be interpreted in different ways depending on the reader's religious beliefs and view of the world.Testament is one of those novels that offers quite a lot of challenge to readers and reviewers, because it's anything but an easy and simple novel, but it's a rewarding reading experience. It's definitely worth delving into, because it delivers an original and surprisingly daring vision of the Gospels and features a bit different kind of a glimpse into the life of Jesus and the fate of the Empire. There have been a few retellings of Biblical stories (and there have also been many speculative fiction stories that feature protagonists called Adam and Eve), but none of them can be compared to this novel and its daring uniqueness, because the author's uncompromising vision is enthralling.By the way, if you happen to fear that Testament is a typical and boring Biblical novel, you're wrong, because it's anything but typical Biblical fiction due to the way it has been written. The author's vision of the Gospels is strikingly good and imaginative, and he handles the mythological, religious and historical aspects of the story in an excellent way.Testament defies easy categorisation and that's one of its strengths. It's a complex and extremely well written novel that rewards its readers with a fascinating and thought-provoking story. It's not an easily comprehensible novel because of its ambiguous contents, but it'll appeal to readers who love literary fiction and want to be challenged by what they're reading. The best way to describe Testament and its contents is to say that it's a complex and unique remix of the five Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Thomas). It's a daring and mesmerising glimpse into their world (according to an interview with the author, it's "an anarcho-socialist atheist humanist détournement of the gospels" and that's an excellent way to describe its contents). I classify this novel as speculative fiction with religious, surreal and thought-provoking elements, because it's perhaps the easiest way to encompass everything that it contains. What makes Testament especially intriguing is that Hal Duncan has taken the source material and edited it into a single narrative with a bit of (re)translation that puts a whole new spin on the familiar and well-known story. This reconstruction of the Gospels brings a lot of freshness to the story of Jesus. I think that most of us are familiar with the story of Jesus, because many of us have been raised as Christians by our parents and society, but none of us have probably ever read this kind of an interpretation of his life and deeds. This novel is simultaneously a story about Jesus and a story about an unnamed narrator who experiences and interprets the stories related to Jesus in his own way. This kind of storytelling forms a stunningly effective glimpse into the life of Jesus realised through the eyes of an author who has a lot to say about many things. It's intriguing that Hal Duncan has renamed Jesus as Joshua and Creator as Worker etc. These tiny changes make a big difference during the story, because they add different meanings and nuances to it. The story is so clever, intelligent and extremely well wrought that it benefits from re-reading.The author follows Joshua's life, deeds and tribulations in a fascinating way. I think it's possible to say that Joshua resembles a brave social anarchist who has his own views about things and who fights for what he believes in.The unnamed reader who reads about Joshua has his own personal and poignant views about the world. Some of his comments and thoughts are surprisingly visceral, explicit and insightful, because they're connected to real events and brutalities that are happening in our world. The author doesn't glorify any of these happenings, but avoids being overly explicit. What surprised me most was the author's way of infusing the story with a few elements related to crimes, homophobia, homosexuality, sex and eroticism; some of these elements are more visible than others. This is something that is seldom seen in reinterpreted Biblical texts. I was also surprised by his ability to add tiny bits of humour into the story. His humour is of the twisted variety and it adds a touch of spiciness to certain points. I'm not sure if all readers will be able to spot the humorous elements, but they can be found in the text. This novel has a deep gnostic feel to it, but I'm not sure if I should actually call it a gnostic novel because of its contents and the way the author writes about the happenings. The author's approach to gnostic elements feels so daring and strange that it is not quite possible to classify it as a true gnostic novel, at least not in the normal sense of the word.Testament is a memorably overwhelming and compelling reading experience in its ambiguity, boldness and complexity. The structure of the story makes it something special, because the narrative consists of the Gospel sections and the narrator sections. The Gospel sections feature King James English (and they've been printed using two columns) and the narrator section feature striking modern prose.Perhaps the most important reason why this novel works so well is that the author makes his readers question many things. He intelligently provokes them with his intellectually stimulating prose. Just like the actual Gospels, this story can be interpreted in many ways, because each of us may feel differently about its contents. The author has given us his own vision of the Gospels, but it is up to each of us to decide how we feel about his vision and how we react to it.It's very likely that Testament may not be to everyone's liking, but this kind of thought-provoking novels seldom are to everyone's liking. There are always those who don't understand them and can't put their contents into the right context, but fortunately there are readers who appreciate this kind of daring quality fiction and understand its purpose. I personally consider this novel to be a masterpiece of speculative fiction and imaginative storytelling. In my opinion, Testament serves as a fine example of the fact that literary speculative fiction is an excellent and indispensable tool to write about difficult themes and issues in an intelligent and thought-provoking way. Speculative fiction supplies authors the proper platform to write almost anything, because it gives plenty of freedom to explore various difficult themes and issues.I highly recommend Hal Duncan's Testament to speculative fiction readers and to those who love beautiful and well written prose with a sharp edge. This novel is such an ambitious and daring novel that it deserves to be read by speculative fiction readers (it can also be recommended to readers who want to read something different). If you're intrigued by literary fiction, striking prose, mysticism, Christianity and the Gospels, you should take a look at this clever and brilliantly written novel, because it's a truly unique and thought-provoking reading experience.Highly recommended!

I’m not generally drawn to poetry, although perhaps more recently than in past years, but I found the writing itself to be light, while the subject matter covered was particularly deep, requiring some pages to be read multiple times to allow everything to settle into place in my mind. Enjoyable in the way a David Lynch movie is, entertaining with an occasionally unsettling feeling that those works that get us to question self often do.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Easy, Interesting Read By Tiffany L. Davis I want to start this review by saying that this is my first Occult Poetry read. With that being said, I have to say that I found it very interesting. I do not know a lot about Occult Poetry, but in reading this I noticed that the poems seemed to be centered around nature and the super natural. There were several short poems that spanned over 170 pages, each rhyming and telling a short story. I found it extremely easy to read, and was able to finish it in 3 short sittings. I found the rhymes to be thought out, and easy to stay in tune with. Often times when reading, I find myself thinking about things that I need to do or what I need from the store. I can honestly say that when I was reading this book, I found myself only thinking about the selection that I was reading at that moment. It made me question the meaning behind the poems and what they meant to me. All in all I found this to be a very easy and interesting read. I would definitely recommend it to poetry lovers, but would also push for those who aren’t a fan a poetry to give it a try because I enjoyed it as well.

A unique a very worthwhile read By TFLReader If you like books that think outside of the box, take you out of yourself, and present an altogether different experience that the mainstream then you should definitely give this a try. The Face on Mars is an odd experience, occult poetry being the genre should give an indication of that, but the experience is absolutely one I’ll remember and probably go back to reread as well. A great book to dip in and out of which I discovered having it with me in the car for a few days, but also nice to sit for a half hour reading through at home. Different, but very good.

Marco Rossini is the Vice President of Genesis, and the civilian commander of the elite Alpha Corps special forces. His skills and courage are about to be tested in ways he could not have foreseen.

It is 2797 CE, and after centuries fractured along religious and social lines, planet Genesis is inching painfully toward unity. The civilian and Churcher executives of a new, hybrid government are convinced that without reform their society will not survive... but they are beset by challenges from fanatics who are determined to destroy all initiatives that might lead to positive change.

Marco's close brush with death and his miraculous recovery with the help of the Earthers has steeled his resolve to fight for an egalitarian society... but can this academic-turned-political leader vanquish his enemies, save his love, and still preserve his own humanity?

Treachery & Triumph (The Genesis Saga), by John Fioravanti

About the Author John Fioravanti is a retired secondary school educator who completed his thirty-five year career in the classroom in June, 2008. Throughout his career, John focused on developing research, analysis, and essay writing skills in his History Classroom. This led to the publication of his first non-fiction work for student use, Getting It Right in History Class (Data Based Directions, 2002), along with an international version of the same title. A Personal Journey to the Heart of Teaching (Iceberg Publishing, 2007, 2008, 2010) (Fiora Books 2014) is his second non-fiction work; it attempts to crystallize the struggles, accomplishments, and setbacks experienced in more than three decades of effort to achieve excellence in his chosen field. The Genesis Saga is set within Kenneth Tam's Equations universe (Iceberg Publishing). He claims that, after two non-fiction books, he's having the time of his life bringing new stories and characters to life! At present, John lives in Waterloo, Ontario with Anne, his bride of forty-two years. They have three children and three grandchildren. In December of 2013, John and Anne founded Fiora Books for the express purpose of publishing John's books. After four decades of marriage, they decided to become business partners as well. Book Review of Treachery & Triumph John Fioravanti By Joy Nwosu Lo-Bamijoko I was determined to be among the first people to read and review this book, and I am happy that I did read it in an expedited time. Now, this is not what I wanted to say about this book.Let me begin by saying that the author is a great story teller. I was intrigued about his story telling skills, and was more in awe about how he could possibly invent and remember all those names in the book. I for one, found those names in the way of the story. I could not always follow them or remember who did or said what. I was sometimes totally lost, especially when the names were abbreviated. At times, I simply ignored the names and focused on the story, a very interesting and exciting story indeed.Although, I was reading about other worlds, which I know did not exist, the author painted such a vivid picture of this world, that I started to see it as real, and all the characters as real. I loved the idea that couples, in this imaginary world had such loving and endearing relationships. All the couples were so much in love, unlike here on Earth. The antagonists were relentless until the very end, and the end, though satisfying, left the reader wanting for more. It was an extraordinary, and beautiful read. I just wished those many names were not in the way of the story.

And like most great sci-fi, it reflects a lot of the issues of our times. The primary conflict is between the conservative and progressive branches of a human government on a planet called Genesis. The statesmen heroes of the story are often struggling to find compromise in order to effectively govern. At the same time, they are dealing with religiously motivated terrorists called the Holy Rouge. My favorite parts of the book were the harrowing scenes where suicide bombers attempt to carry out their attacks, and then when Genesis’ black-ops special forces begin to retaliate. At the same time, Genesis is receiving visits from the ‘Earthers,’ which are mammal species from the humans’ former home planet. The Earthers have hyper-evolved into a more advanced race. Their interactions with the human government, not surprisingly, sparks waves of xenophobia throughout the planet.Trying my best to not spoil anything: I especially liked the last bit of action in the book. But I was a little disappointed by the very end of the book, because there was obviously so much more story to tell!

Seldom has a long-established hobby been transformed more than radio controlled model aircraft flying has been with the development of light-weight, inexpensive electric power systems. After decades of dominance by glow and gas powered internal combustion engines, the hottest thing in RC flying today is electric powered model aircraft. Energy dense lithium polymer batteries, powerful brushless electric motors and the digital devices that control them have taken the radio control hobby by storm. With them has come a veritable tsunami of molded foam models of nearly every type of airplane imaginable. Warbirds like the P-51 Mustang, aerobatic aircraft like the Edge 540 and a variety of trainers similar to the Cessna 172 fill the online marketplaces and the shelves of local hobby shops around the world. Traditional models, too, are being developed or converted to fly with electric power systems. These models have their own body of knowledge. Instead of tinkering with the needle valve settings of internal combustion engines, now modelers are computing watts, managing amps, determining volts and shopping for components that maximize power without exceeding the electronic limits of their model’s components. RC Ground School provides you with the information you need to get started in the exciting hobby of model aviation. You’ll get answers to these and other questions: What should I consider in choosing a model aircraft? What kind of transmitter should I consider? Should I go with a ready-to-fly kit or an almost-ready-to-fly model? What if I need to teach myself to fly? How can I find an instructor? How do I operate my model safely? How do electric models work? Come join the thousands of other modelers enjoying this fun and interesting hobby. RC Ground School is the perfect tool to help you get started. Already flying glow or gas airplanes? Thinking about converting to or adding an electric model to your hangar? The second half of the book is a deeper dive into what makes up an electric model's power system and what you'll need to know to convert that old friend to electric power or at least keep up with the conversations at the field.

By Sandy Scott Although I am a retired airline pilot with a degree in aeronautical engineering and over 15,200 hours of jet piloting time, as a recent convert to the world of R/C model flying, I had endless questions. This book answered them in a concise, clear way! I have spent an enormous time calling support lines of R/C model dealers, searching about R/C forums, posting questions there, and watching hours of YouTube videos in my quest for knowledge. I could have saved myself a lot of time had I known of the existence of this great book.I must also reveal that the book arrived yesterday afternoon and I am only half way through reading it. I have gleaned enough knowledge in that half book to justify my 5 star review. Bottom line: The book is a must read for anyone new to the hobby of flying R/C aircraft! Now I've got to run and go finish the rest of this great book!

Worthwhile, helpful, and enjoyable read By nioa I am an experienced modeler and electric airplane pilot looking for material to help others learn about electric aircraft and flying. I read this book from cover-to-cover and found it to be thoughtful, well organized, and authoritative.Jim engages the reader with some common initial questions that are clearly answered. The book helps with getting started with electric flight, safe modeling, field operations, how models work, and tools needed, as well as examining electric power systems. The book is easy to read and understand, concise, and is up-to-date, and offers current useful electric information. I recommend it as an excellent guide to those starting out and needing a book to help "pull it all together".

It covers everything a new modeller to radio control needs in order to make judgement on clubs, kits, electric or nitro or anything else conceivable. Well worth the reading and information provided and will save time and money.
