Over his fourteen years of age, Alex McGregor's world has thrived inside the borders of his rural Pennsylvania town; to an outsider, his life is as picturesque as the rolling hills and peaceful farms surrounding his home. His father, Michael, and mother, Lauren, attempt to correct the mistakes of their pasts through the auspiciousness of their son. The family's pristine appearance is shattered, however, when Michael falls ill to a strange lung infection. The internal tension of the family, building for years, explodes as Michael and Lauren separate, heading for a divorce. Alex can only watch as Michael's health fades, Lauren becomes estranged, and his entire world collapses around him. What none of them could've expected is that a more sinister illness might be hiding underneath Michael's ailments, one which threatens to take the life the family built and shatter it into a million pieces. Through resilience, love, maturity, and the undying perseverance of the human spirit, The Hard Way Back to Heaven serves as a testament to the power of hope.

By Shauna N Hann This is a sweet book that captures the innocent (albiet mischievous) voices of the resident bunnies at Hunter Hollow. It is not as bitter-sweet as the previous book, but it is as enjoyable. The bunnies now can communicate with the help of a 'bunny dictate' and there are poets, dreamers, and antics from the bunnies as they wait for their forever home in safety at Hunter Hollow. Ms. Hunter's prose is well written and makes this book easy to read. I enjoyed reading this and I reccommend it.

Ms. Hunter's ability to share the wisdom of her house rabbits is wonderful. Such insight, creativity, and delightful snapshots into their lives. Parts are laugh-out-loud funny and others more touching. I'm hoping a third book (and more) will be written!

Selous was one of the giants of Vitorian Africa and in this work, written at the urging of President Theodore Roosevelt, he compiles many of his most keen observations about life and wildlife in Africa. Fascinating not only as a period piece, Selous's thoughts are remarkably prescient about the state of game in Africa even today. Though it was written before the rise of the commercial poaching that has ravaged so much of the continent, the book gives an excellent insight into the need to carefully observe, record, and interpret the ecological signs found in the wild. Clear and lively in style, the tales told within encompass everything from dietary habits of hyaena to the effects of sleeping sickness on agriculture. Especially interesting are the authors remarkably forward-thinking ideas on race relations, ideas that would not become the rule in southern Africa for over 75 years. An altogether satisfying read.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. My comments on this Selous book. By A Customer I have read plenty of elephant hunting volumes in the likes of Bell, Stigand and several others but this Selousbook is different. It's not entirely an account of Selous'adventures with his rifle but rather as the first portion of the book's title suggests, an informative wrap-up of the ways and characteristics of various African game. Selous is a unsurpassable raconteur when it comes to telling of big game, as this book proves. There's a chapter on Selous' search for the elusive inyala antelope, and it is of great interest. A book well worth parting with your cash for. Simply a true must-buy !

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. African stories from the past by a noted figure in the history of that era. By John Wingert A good read about Africa in a bygone era. Selous was a famous professional hunter, but this book is far more nature study than hunting stories. Well written and engaging.

Poetry. "Authorities say a man was stabbed to death, decapitated and partly cannibalized in what appears to be a random act of violence on board a bus that was en route to Winnipeg late Wednesday." With these starkly haunting words from a 2008 Canadian news report, Joseph Fasano begins VINCENT, a book-length poem based on Vince Li's killing of Tim McLean on a Greyhound bus near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Using a fictionalized first-person narrative from the perspective of the killer, Fasano explores the inner workings of a disturbed mind trying to come to terms with a horrific act that even its perpetrator cannot fully comprehend. "Have you smelled the rose oil / in the shoes of the dead... have you woken / and woken / and woken," the speaker asks us. And the poem will not let us say no.

Vincent, by Joseph Fasano

Review This book-length poem, told through the mask of a murderer, demands to be read in one sitting. Indeed, the thing held me spellbound with its quiet mania, its seductive otherworldliness, from start to finish, so much so that I wondered, who would dare refuse the ride, the chance to be driven by a single unrelenting sentence to a lyricism bordering on derangement from which there is no return? Not only is this Joseph Fasano's finest book to date, it's also the best long contemporary poem that I've read since I can't remember when. --Timothy Liu, author of Don t Go Back To SleepRobert Browning meets Randall Jarrell meets Ai in Joseph Fasano's explosive narrative of a man's psychosis. It is not only excellently crafted, but there is not a moment to lose interest in its urgency as it barrels on to its disastrous end. Vincent is a must-read. --Noelle Kocot, author of Soul in SpaceWhat does it mean to enter into and imagine the darkest corners of the human psyche? In Vincent, Joseph Fasano not only puts on the mask of depravity, he imagines the speech acts and interior monologues of a killer, as though that killer had the associative diligence and skill of a poet. The result is an unnerving book that challenges the reader's assumptions about the role of beauty in poetry. Vincent is a chilling, memorable accomplishment. --Mark Wunderlich, author of The Earth Avails

About the Author Joseph Fasano was born and raised in New York State's Hudson River Valley. He earned a BA in philosophy from Harvard University in 2005 and an MFA from Columbia University in 2008. His poem "Mahler in New York" won the 2008 RATTLE Poetry Prize, and he has been a finalist for the Missouri Review Editors' Prize, the Times Literary Supplement Poetry Competition, the Kinereth Gensler Award from Alice James Books, and the Autumn House Press Poetry Prize. He teaches at Columbia University, among other institutions. He is the author of three poetry collections published by Cider Press Review: VINCENT (2015), FUGUE FOR OTHER HANDS (2013), and INHERITANCE (2014).

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A spectacular journey into a troubled consciousness By Gregory Atwan Like a dream, Vincent crouches down and picks up events, persons, the soil of normal life, but then transforms them into something strange, wonderful, and ineluctable—frightening and disconcerting as much as it touches on the eternal and the sublime. When it is over, you feel like Jacob transformed to Israel in the night: something has attacked you, wrestled you down, and maybe held your face up to glimpse a beauty you can't explain or recreate. The thing was high and powerful enough that you have to call it genius, but it was also dirty, bloody, human, and it gave you an inheritance because you wrestled back.An epigraph reminds us that nearly 10 years ago a disturbed person committed a shocking act on a bus deep in the Canadian steppe. The plain, italicized prose from the news report is in some ways some of the most potent poetry in the book—like a single-note motif at the beginning of a great symphony. It provides the material for a whirring brilliance that will engulf the next few hours of the reader's conscious life. The book's other important piece of writing that isn't explicitly poetry, a legal disclaimer, tells us that this is a work of fiction "based very loosely on an actual event." This isn't a book about Vince Li, the mentally ill person who did the unthinkable thing. It is a book about Vincent—a name that is a gerund—a constantly happening, inexhaustible voice that underscores the beauties and tragedies of our evicted and alienated lives.Of course, the bus is still there, rolling to a halt on the prairie road in the narrator's memory, but what is truly remarkable is the transformation Vincent (the book and the character) achieves of this event, these persons—from the blood and the marrow of the thing into the pure-and-yet-hopelessly-muddy experience of examining ourselves, our language, and the lightning that flashes now and then between those two worlds. Fasano's poetry overflows with wit, sadness, the seduction and disappointment of rhythm, and the author's extraordinary gift for metaphor that tells perfectly but does not presume to explain. In 75 pages of careening, careful, beautiful verse, unencumbered by trendiness and breathtakingly sincere, his Vincent tells us a story in moments and figures. No excerpt can do it justice: Like the best streams of consciousness, every line somehow improves the last one and is haunted by it. In the end, it is a story that touches all of us but which all of us fail to grasp most of the time. This is a thrilling, challenging, exasperatingly lovely book. You simply can't miss it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. perhaps the most thought-provoking long-form poem published in this century By the Wasteband Much have I travell'd in the realms of gold, till I heard Fasano speak out loud and bold. This is the third volume of Joseph Fasano's poetry that I have had the pleasure of enjoying. I've found this work to be his most captivating and groundbreaking. Indeed, this is perhaps the most thought-provoking long-form poem published in this century that I have come across.Born from a senseless act of human brutality, "Vincent" echoes this dismemberment in a schizoid layout and structure. Fasano brilliantly reminds us of the power of poetry as a physical object. On their own, so many of the verses are worthy of deep wondering and enjoyment. Let the reader be warned that many of these fragments have indeed caused me to lose sleep.Like a primordial chaos, each piece of madness, sorrow, and beauty somehow bind together like sacred verse. In doing so, Fasano defies the mindlessness of a brutal crime with a work of art that restores humanity to the darkest areas of the soul.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A powerful and unique poetic voice By Eddie Coyle Yes, this long poem was stimulated by an actual bizarre 2008 homicide. But don't think that "Vincent" the narrator is simply intended to represent a deranged way of seeing the world. For Fasano, Vincent is what Henry James would call a "compositional resource," and as such allows him to expand exponentially the dimensions of poetic language. It is an astonishing performance that in its own unique fashion invents a radically new colloquialism that makes today's typical colloquial mode seem as relevant as a rotary telephone.

This volume marks the first translation of these prayer-poems into English. Originally written in 1899, Rilke wrote them upon returning to Germany from his first trip to Russia. His experience of the East shaped him profoundly. He found himself entranced by Orthodox churches and monasteries, above all by the icons that seemed to him like flames glowing in dark spaces. He intended these poems as icons of sorts, gestures that could illumine a way for seekers in the darkness. As Rilke here writes, "I love the dark hours of my being, for they deepen my senses."

Prayers of a Young Poet, by Rainer Maria Rilke

Review In the spring of 1899, the 23-year-old German poet Rainer Maria Rilke arrived in Moscow for the first time, to be overwhelmed by the Orthodox Ester. The following autumn, now living in Berlin and assuming the literary identity of a Russian monk, he poured out the 67 poems that the American academic Mark Burrows as the Prayers of a Young Poet. Rilke wrote furiously up to nine poems a day, or night, between 20 September and 14 October. His work echoed the identity of the solitary priest he represented, writing in a verse letter to his superior: I look out across the land; I listen, pray, read, and sometimes paint an icon of St. Nicholas or the holiest one in in the Stoglav style — more than this I can’t manage. In his search for God, in his celebration of the created and creative world, and through his negotiations between art and faith, Rilke represents the aspirations of many poets looking beyond horizons ruled by humanity. Much of Rilke’s work emerges from exploratory darkness: “I believe in nights.” Weather conditions theology. The poet-monk brings to his cell experiences from the storms lashing the surrounding forest as metaphors for his wrestling matches with religious possibilities. He takes ideas from the books he reads, and meditates on them in the anguished woods. He struggles to find God, but also luxuriates in his closeness. Christ appears fleetingly, as “Your Son” in one poem, and through “the wondrous play of powers …rising in the treetops like a resurrection” in another. The monk, like Rilke, remembers a great church in Moscow where “the dome is full of Your Son,/ binding the whole church as one …” This anonymous “least among monks, an Apostle,” seeks to label God by his discerned qualities: “You stone … You wind … Your dark being.” By the end of the book, the monk is welcoming another “superior,” a survivor among the blind singers who wandered among the Ukrainian poor. The monk’s presence reminds him of all the songs he has forgotten. So Rilke adds a postscript of hope to the holy search of his adopted pilgrim.—Martyn Halsall, Church Times

From the Inside Flap

Rilke wrote these poems in 1899 after returning to Germany from his first trip to Russia, calling them simply “the prayers.”  They reflect the intensity of his experience of the East, voicing his fascination with Orthodox churches and monasteries.  The icons, so different than the religious art he encountered on an earlier trip to Italy, seemed to him like flames glowing in dark spaces.  These luminous prayers gesture as verbal icons, their images illumining a way in the darkness for seekers of the sacred.  As he here writes:

I love the dark hours of my being,

for they deepen my senses .  .  .

From them I’ve come to know that I have room

for a second life, timeless and wide.

“How perfect that Mark Burrows is as fine a scholar as he is a poet. His understanding of ‘the young poet’ is subtle and rare; his knowledge of Rilke’s language and intentions is rich and deep. It is incredible that it’s taken so long to have these prayers in a single song as they were intended, but every line in this exquisite collection rewards the wait.”

—Dr. Stephanie Dowrick, author of Seeking the Sacred and In the Company of Rilke

From the Back Cover A ground-breaking volume that presents, for the first time in English, these prayer-poems as Rilke intended them"This extraordinary early-draft form of some of Rilke's most famous poems somehow evokes, for me, Leonardo Da Vinci's notebooks--it shows the same mix of surety, roughness, genius, and the sense of precipitous creative speed. Rilke's poetry always reminds us what a direct pondering of intimacy and depth might look like. I am most grateful for these muscular translations and Mark Burrows' extended introductory comments, offering entrance to a body of work until now unavailable to English-language readers." --Jane Hirshfield, poet and translator; author most recently of "Come, Thief: Poems" ""Prayers of a Young Poet" is a hauntingly beautiful book. Mark Burrows' splendid translation renders the passion and the pathos of the anonymous young monk who sings these love songs to the Lord and somehow speaks our hidden desire. In these pages, Rilke dances in the dark to the tune of his own poems, his reluctant partner the elusive God he woos. The effect is irresistible: an invitation to join in the dance no reader can refuse." --Angela Alaimo O'Donnell, poet and author of "Saint Sinatra & Other Poems" "Rilke's praying monk begins with the time-honored conventions of his religious tradition, then moves beyond them to the dark silences of forest and dream where God waits to be discovered anew. In these startling poems brought to us in Mark Burrows' lucid translation, metaphor gives way to metaphor, as each verbal foray into the divine courts a mystery that can be approached but neither comprehended nor defined."--Peter S. Hawkins, Professor of Religion and Literature, Yale Divinity School

Unique View into an Extraordinary Mind By Willie Sordillo What makes this book exceptional is the insight provided by author Mark Burrows in the preface, introduction and afterward. Burrows' scholarship and understanding of both poetry and faith illuminate his sensitive translations, giving the reader a context in which to see into the developing mind of a young genius grappling with his own faith in terms which, on the surface, seem contradictory, at least in terms of conventional metaphors for spiritual experience. Instead of light and the heavens above, we find spiritual formation and transformation revealed in shadow and the depths. This thin volume is best read slowly and with repetition. It is remarkably contemporary in the way in which it challenges our assumptions, and perhaps even our beliefs, by offering not only a fresh understanding of what it means to be a person of faith, but a way which steers clear of easy answers and glib cheerleading where belief becomes just another pop culture phenomenon. Burrows' book is at once a loving gift and a profound challenge to those who would simplify the complex and erase the mystery.

Richard Chrisman, Ph.D. Mark Burrows performs an invaluable spiritual service today by presenting the Rilke to us who turns out to be a modern theologian. What a surprise it is to overhear an absolutely unique conversation with God, which is what these poems are. These prayers, as Rilke calls them, reflect a Christianity fully come-of-age, having divorced itself from the shopworn anthropomorphisms of his, and our own, time. How refreshing to meet a Christian who is neither a conventional believer nor seeker but who speaks frankly as a co-creator of and with the Creator. For those confused by such an unorthodox religious posture, Burrows' introduction will help by showing Rilke's connection with Russian Orthodoxy where the poet experienced what can only be called an interactive revelation. There Rilke experienced God in what is for once a true relationship, that is, one where each is affected and changed by the other. In this, Rilke seems to have anticipated the idea of the "consequent nature of God" described by process theologians. It's a little cheeky, and deeply reverent. Moreover, it's a spirituality that doesn't say good-bye to religion. Spoken in the persona of a monk, in Russia considered the exemplar of true spirituality (in contrast to the clergy), Rilke's prayers come from a traditional place with the existential force of a psychological and social realist. I believe Rilke would have qualified for adoption as the poet of the apophatic tradition. Not a rosy Christianity at all, maybe one more like Dostoievky's. So Burrows has given us with this excellent sheaf of poems a devotional handbook for the modern man or woman, a liturgy suited for the religiously averse who have not thrown out the religious baby with the bathwater.

Mark Burrows does a deft job of bringing these poems to life in his publication of Prayers of a Young Poet. Between September 20th and October 14th, 1899, Rilke composed sixty-eight poems utilizing the voice of an old Russian Orthodox monk. These poems would later be published as the first part of The Book of Hours; however these early poems are arranged chronologically here with Rilke's prose narration. This makes the entire collection one cohesive work and Rilke gives interpretive clues to understanding some of these poems. Sometimes Rilke gives the setting and occasion for each poem and even the subject troubling the mind of the monk.Burrows includes an introductory essay and an Afterword on reading and translating Rilke. These essays themselves are worth the price of the book, but the real treat is reading Burrows translations. This is the first time these poems have been translated into English in this format and there is a freshness to them. These poems are prayer poems. Rilke's prayers (or the prayer of the old monk of the poems) dovetails nicely with my own prayers in places. Rilke's monk is full of spiritual longing, sees the transcendence of God and the interconnection of all things. At other points Rilke's meanings are opaque and challenging. Poetry like this is not made for quick consumption but should be carefully chewed and digested. There is a lot here.Rilke's monk does not address God directly but calls him, most often, "You." Here is [11] from this collection:You, darkness from which I come,I love you more than the flamethat bounds the world, shiningin a single ringbeyond which no creature knows of it.But the darkness seizes everything, floods and flames-how it grasps them, people and powers . . .And it is possible that a great strengthstirs in my neighborhood:I believe in nights. This poem and others speak of God-transcendent and immanent. however Rilke also explores the themes of poetry and iconography, death and mortality, faith and love, doubts and questions and the solitary self. I love the words of these poems for the way they play in my ears. This is really a beautiful collection written by a young Rilke (before he wrote Letters to a Young Poet). I found Rilke's old monk fascinating, occasionally irreverent (or perhaps just odd) but always interesting. I would not consult Rilke's monk for spiritual guidance, except at one point: the poetic voice of these poems prays honest prayers and does not hide behind platitudes and pretense. These are simple and beautiful offerings.I highly recommend this book to any fellow lover of poetry or appreciator of Rilke. I give this book five stars: ★★★★★Thank you to Paraclete Press for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for this review.

Two Tales of the Moon, by Jennifer Sun

Review "Jennifer  Sun  draws  on  personal  knowledge  of  China  and  a  former  career  in telecommunications  finance  for  her  well-crafted  debut  novel  about  the  meeting  of  East  and West,  titled  Two  Tales  of  the  Moon.    Blending  romance  and  ethical  intrigue,  this  is  a  unique  novel  that  should  please  readers who appreciated  Kevin  Kwan's  Crazy  Rich  Asians  and  Sarah  Howe's  Loop  of  Jade."   -- Blueink Review Two Tales of the Moon is a thoughtful portrait of a modern woman who must choose between the burden of memory and a future of her own making...the writing takes on the sharpened focus of a play... the work effectively captures the effects of communism in searingly personal ways. Four Star Rating by  --  FOREWARD/CLARION REVIEW This book has a cast of three-dimensional characters on an international stage, all of whom ring true. It's a timely book because it takes a hard look at contemporary China and its effort to leverage its cash to establish itself in America's sensitive telecommunications field. The picture Sun draws of a China beset with corruption and political manipulation, raises serious questions about the future. At the same time, Sun gives a glimpse of the country's culture and traditions that sustain the people of this ancient civilization. I highly recommend it. --Kenton Keith, U.S. Ambassador (retired)"In her first novel, Sun explores a cross-cultural love affair in the world of international business. She writes competently about Wall Street culture, and she creates a convincing cast of blustery boardroom characters. But the book's most engaging chapters is Li Lu's difficult back story. When she returns to China after 30 years in the U.S., Lu pieces together a painful tale of politics, parentage, and betrayal. Sun's book bridges the gap between Chinese tradition and an increasingly globalized West." - Kirkus ReviewSun's use of opposites is intriguing and it is incorporated into every aspect of the novel--east/west, indifference/love, growth/stagnation, hope/fear, among others. Trying to find the balance between each set of opposites helps make the characters relatable. TWO TALES OF THE MOON is a compelling story that reveals that the human struggle is the same regardless of one's past or cultural upbringing. - IndieReader.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Well written novel - a few comments By Amazon Customer It's an amazingly well-written novel. Amazing for two reasons: 1) English is not Jennifer Sun's native language. However, reading through the novel, I felt that Nabokov was reborn. 2) Two Tales of the Moon is her literary debut. Nevertheless, she wrote with such ease and sophistication as if she had several best-sellers under her belt. The narration is smooth, gripping and artful, intertwining multiple threads of events and people across time and space harmoniously into a whole. The author knows the knack of how to present objects visually with words which could be processed into images. Sun must be a conversationist herself because she excels in constructing dialog, most of which are natural, lively, subtle and appropriate to the character. I especially enjoyed the girlish talk between Lu and Sage, and the conversation between Lu and Will. These main characters are well-developed, convincing and lovable.I enjoyed reading the novel. I didn't just read it. I "experienced" it. I virtually toured Montauk on Google Map and "surfed" where Will surfed. I listened to Shostakovich's The Gadfly Suite on Youtube and liked it.Perfection is a rarity in this world. This novel is no exception. There are imperfections as I perceived it.First of all, the lesser characters are flat and stereotyped, so much so that they are no longer "typical" but "atypical" characters, such as the Party Secretary, Juin, and Lu's mother. They are caricatures, too one-sided to be true. Satanizing the Communist father and son (they are often compared to snakes) makes them less believable. And it is simply repulsive to make Lu, such an elegant woman, to have a whore-like mother.Secondly, some facts, especially historical, need to adhere to, even in fiction. For instance, the goal of the Cultural Revolution was not to persecute the capitalists. Chairman Mao's goal was to bring down his hand-picked successor, Chinese president, Liu Shaoqi and purge "the capitalist delegates inside the party", namely the party secretaries. Tens of thousands of party secretaries were persecuted, along with the capitalists. Party secretaries' homes were raided by the red guards, too.Lastly, but not least importantly, in this novel China is portrayed too negatively: the air is always polluted; the country is ruled by the same oppressive regime as if still under Mao; its government and businesses harbor ill intentions toward the US... Isn't it a coincidence that none of the living Chinese characters (technically, Lu is an American) is likable? If you (a reader) have no or little knowledge about China, would you form positive impression about that country and its people after reading this novel?BTW, a three-kilometer-wide river is a huge river. Shenzhen River is not. It is hundreds of feet wide at its widest part.I look forward to Jennifer Sun's next novel, sans the above "imperfections", in which China will be projected in fairer light if it is still a subject.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Rich and Rewarding Read! By Amazon Customer Cyber security, Chinese Telecom company, US government contractor, Wall Street deal makers—this beautifully written novel has all the ingredients that could turn itself into a heart-gripping thriller, involving international politics, intrigue and espionage in the context of fierce business competition. But the book is not only about that. Instead, Jennifer Sun delves into the personal lives of her characters, who are thrust into the vortex of high tech, wall street finance, cross-border business ventures and historical suspicions between world’s major economic powers. Each of her main characters, Lu, Sage and Will, has a personal story, and Jennifer Sun tells it well for each of them, moving deftly between their memories and present dilemmas, between family histories and each life’s destination, between the commercial center of Shanghai and rustic Montauk, furthest edge of Long Island. Their past tugs at every turn of their lives, and their present pulls them back into what they would rather forget or leave alone but cannot at times. It is this tug and pull that gives her characters an emotional depth and generates empathetic impact on the reader, making this book a rich, rewarding read. The title, “Two Tales of the Moon,” itself is intriguing. The moon, as a motif beautifully woven into the fabric of the stories in the book, is the moon steeped in the Chinese myth and culture, symbolic of both separation and reunion, longing and fulfillment. But which tale of the moon is more compelling after the interlocking stories of her characters are told? It is better for the reader to find out.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully Written By P.C. I down loaded a copy Friday evening, after reading the "Look Inside" preview section. The two versions of the Moon fairy story immediately drew me onward. I started reading Friday night and finished Sunday morning. What a suspense it is, not just a suspense on how the international business deal ultimately turns out. The more intriguing suspense is about Lu's more than thirty years of estranged relationship with her mother and family back in China, as well as the reason of Will's personal commitment issues through his adult life. Although the story is set up around a venture between two U.S. and Chinese cyber-tech companies, within a five months period, the themes of the story are timeless and universal: it's about love, relationship and friendship, and how the choices we make in life shape our character and control our destiny. The author's writing style has an understated elegance, full of vivid imagery. It's like she is constantly painting images with words, whether it's a scenery, food, or drinks. The characters are complex and real-life like; they make me feel: joy at one moment and anger the next. That's what a good book supposed to do - make us FEEL.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Yes, you can putt. By Dennis M. Ruffing Back in elementary school, we played marbles during recess. Not the variation where the marbles are in a circle and you plink them out with your trusty cats-eye shooter; no, we'd dig our heels in the ground and spin around to make a hole, then step back fifteen or twenty feet to toss marbles at the hole and kick them through a curious method of setting one foot just behind the marble and kicking that foot with the other foot. A poor-man’s croquet shot. The first to get a marble in the hole got to keep all the others.Little did I know then that I was honing my putting stroke. In this short and dense book, Rawn Torrington shares the results of a lifetime passionate pursuit of that most fickle and misunderstood aspect of the most challenging game, golf. His answer is based on the premise that we’re all instinctual hunters and know how to use the weapon, our putters, to hunt the beast, a birdie.Backed by scientific research, scholarly study, and years of first hand teaching experience under the mentoring eye of Hank Haney, Rawn’s “If I Could Only Putt” walks you through the conscious and unconscious sections of our amazing human brains as the basis of instinct, then into the process of targeting and visualizing, and finally through the key mechanics of sending the ball where it belongs, on its way into the cup. Through this book you’ll come to trust your putting instincts instead of over-engineering a putt by factoring in the grain, the slope, the wind-speed, the phases of the moon and every other piece of available, but useless, data.Go play marbles again. Go make putts. And the next time you’re in central Maine, stop by T’s Golf Manchester and ask Rawn if you’re putting from the correct side of the ball. After you’ve bought and read this book, though, you’ll be able to tell him instead.

An effective running game begins with using the right blocking schemes versus the defensive scheme you are facing. As a veteran football coach of 30 years, Coach Renner has acquired game tested knowledge of run blocking schemes and applied it to a system that can be reproduced. He coached the offensive line for 17 years as a head coach. Using over 50 blocking diagrams he details blocking schemes for inside zone, outside zone, counter, trap, sweep, power and belly. He shows how to use them with or without a tight end in the formation and how to attack a 4-3, 4-2-5, 3-4, 3-5-3 and Bear defense. He describes defensive line techniques and diagrams what blocking scheme works best to attack it. He shows how to use formations to put the defensive linemen and linebackers in the right place to attack them with a good blocking scheme. He details and diagrams the blocking scheme that works best versus each defensive lineman’s technique. He shares with you his process of using formations, ball field position and blocking schemes to call a good run play every time. As a result, his offense has scored in 142 straight games, won 70% of their games over the past 10 years and won championships. This was accomplished at four different high schools in two different states with only one division 1 lineman. It proves you don’t need big lineman. You just need to use technique, leverage and a blocking scheme that takes advantage of the defender’s techniques. How to Call Football Run Plays to Attack Defensive Linemen and Linebackers Technique details a blocking system that will do that.

In 1968, three businessmen left their jobs at Cedar Point in Sandusky to purchase Geauga Lake Amusement Park. Geauga Lake had been a summertime escape since the 1870s, but by the 1960s it had fallen on hard times. The businessmens company, Funtime, Inc., transformed the aging facility into a modern amusement park and established a reputation as an innovative operator in one of the nations most competitive amusement park markets. Geauga Lake became the first park with two looping roller coasters and the first to integrate a full-scale water park, Boardwalk Shores. The company broke even more new ground in 1988 when it resurrected a classic roller coaster design to construct Raging Wolf Bobs. Images of America: Geauga Lake: The Funtime Years 19691995 captures the parks transformation and some of the countless memories that resulted from Funtimes 26-year ownership.

Some touching on Sea World and the Six Flags era for those wondering. Still brings a tear to my eye that the park is gone, but this is a great way to relive those memories.I'm glad I was able to be part of history.

Wise Excellent history of Geauga Lake, focusing primarily on the years the park was operated by Fun Time. Post cards and photos with captions capture the heart of the park. By Karen E Vajda Mom my worked at Geauga Lake for 6 years, first at Balloon Darts then onto Fascination. It was back in the mid 60's into the early 70's. When the Schryers owned it it was such a family-like atomosphere & everyone knew me & watched out for me! I even remember them having me load the bullets in the cartridges for the rifle range & getting paid 50 cents a can! After Funtime took over she went into the Foods part. It was a nice innocent time & many memories came flooding back from my childhood from reading this book...GOOD MEMORIES!!! I remember going back a few years after she left & still seeing familiar faces...among them Ed who ran the rifle range who was there FOREVER & WONDERFUL "UNCLE" Bob a Deputy Sheriff who worked the park! BIG BUSINESS may have taken away GEAUGA LAKE, but NEVER my wonderful happy innocent childhood memories!

There are 1.2 billion people living in India; more than 1.2 billion stories in one country. A man living on a tea plantation in the Nilgiri Hills realises he’s in love with his daughter-in-law; a young family eagerly awaits the launch of Shakti-Cola; a chronically anxious yoga retreat manager struggles with the demands of her enlightenment-seeking Western patrons; and a family legacy hangs in the balance when a horrifying discovery is unearthed on their Rajasthani estate. Traversing thirteen Indian states, One Point Two Billion illuminates the exhilarating diversity of the second most populous nation in the world. Moving from towering megacity to remote detention camp, from the canals of rural Punjab to an exclusive club in Delhi, these remarkable stories offer glimpses into the loves, triumphs, and tragedies of everyday life in a world torn between tradition and the shock of modernity. Laced with biting humour and injected with subtlety and emotion, the stories in this mesmerising collection portray the vast array of lives co-existing within the uneasy imbalance of Indian society. ‘Varied in range, concentrated in power - these stories are a deeply satisfying read.’ - Kamila Shamshie ‘This is a wonderful collection, slicing and dicing India in thirteen unexpected ways.’ - Siddhartha Deb ‘One of the finest books to come out of India this year. Rao zooms in on forgotten lives - ordinary, extraordinary, absurd, tragic. His writing is subtle, delightfully wry. I loved it.’ - Mirza Waheed ‘Sometimes a novel is so good that you don’t want it to end. I wanted each story to be expanded into a novel, which I then wouldn't have wanted to end.’ - Sandra Newman ‘These are deft, anxious, and haunting stories of a people caught between two chasms, the medieval and the modern.’ - Jeet Thayil

Vivid vignettes of Indian life By Geoff Crocker In these short stories, in the vein of Mark Tully or Jhumpa Lahiri, Mahesh Rao creates vivid vignettes of Indian life. The superficialities of Bollywood, the corrupt yoga centre, the evangelical preacher, and the commercial galaxy around a soft drink business; the bitterness which drives a woman to denounce her rival’s son, wrestling cults, spoilt upper class brats, sexual attraction to a friend’s spouse or to a daughter-in-law, criminal feudal repression, the feeble teacher who becomes radicalised – these themes are treated with wry comment in Rao’s concise engaging style.

With points of humour By Kenza Saadi Mahesh Rao is a young Indian fictional writer of great talent. With points of humour, sarcasm and at times tenderness, he tells us the story of 13 people through various states and cities of India from the lady who works in Yoga center to an ex-Bollywood actor to a school teacher in Kashmir. All the stories are very human and touch upon many of our conditions, desperate, hopeful or otherwise. I highly recommend it.
