1.—The Trial. THE gentlemen of the jury retired to consider their verdict. Their foreman was a person doubly distinguished among his colleagues. He had the clearest head, and the readiest tongue. For once the right man was in the right place. Of the eleven jurymen, four showed their characters on the surface. They were: The hungry juryman, who wanted his dinner. The inattentive juryman, who drew pictures on his blotting paper. The nervous juryman, who suffered from fidgets. The silent juryman, who decided the verdict.

The Evil Genius: A Domestic Story, by Wilkie Collins

Review

“Collins’ boldness in drawing sympathetic portraits of both the wife and ‘the other woman’ is astonishingly modern. The novel well deserves to be brought back into print.” ― Catherine Peters, Oxford University

From the Publisher The Broadview Literary Texts series is an effort to represent the ever-changing canon of literature in English by bringing together texts long regarded as classics with valuable, though lesser-known literature.

From the Back Cover

Wilkie Collins is best known for his great mystery The Moonstone and The Woman in White―and for a life as sensational as are those novels. (The writer who famously advised other novelists to ‘make ‘em laugh, make ‘em cry, make ‘em wait’ is now known to have kept entire households in different parts of England going simultaneously.) Yet Collins also wrote a succession of extraordinarily powerful novels of private life; of these The Evil Genius is among the finest.

The story is motivated by the attraction between Herbert Linley and the woman he hires as governess for his child Kitty―the long suffering Sydney Westerfield. As one expects with Collins, the story is driven forward with deft assurance. Yet he also treats the theme of adultery and divorce in a manner quite unconventional for his time―and, remarkably, he manages to draw readers into a sympathetic understanding of both of the main female characters: the offending governess and the aggrieved wife.

The Evil Genius was a very considerable success when first published; indeed, it brought Collins more financially than any of his other works. Over a century later its sinews retain the strength to speak powerfully to the reader; lively and intelligent, it is perhaps the finest of Collins’ later novels.

Evil, Genius, Or Both By taking a rest Mr. Collins is best known for "The Moonstone", and "The Lady In White", and is generally considered the originator of modern mystery writing. He wrote an extensive body of work that never reached the same success with the public as the 2 works already mentioned. Some of his later work is not of the same caliber of his best-known writings, but there are many that are well worth the time of any reader that enjoys 19th Century Fiction. "The Evil Genius" is one work that while not stellar when compared to his best, is still as good or better than many contemporary practitioners of the genre.Mr. Collins had an interest in the laws of Scotland as they applied to marriage. This was a theme he dealt with on more than one occasion. I have found him to be unique that while he addresses the impact of the law on both men and women, he more often than not explores the women's viewpoint, either as victim or beneficiary of Scotland's unique body of law. "Evil Genius" is an example of the law being a "friend" to the Wife, however this is but one event that results from the tale, and catalyzes many others. This is not a mystery in the style of who did the deed, rather a study in who did what to whom and why. There is one who I believe virtually all readers will deem "The Evil Genius", however Mr. Collins gives all involved in this tale their chance at the title. In several cases the action that you readily expect of a person is precisely what they do not do. Generosity replaces greed, falsehoods of a devastating nature are set on the most innocent of persons, and honor has as many meanings in this work as there are characters that believe they practice it.The story includes an opening with a jury that will ensure you never want to be a defendant, a ship that was alleged to have been intentionally destroyed at sea facilitating a diamond theft, and the ship's captain languishing in prison awaiting the verdict. From this point on the book traces the seemingly random intersecting of a variety of persons, some of who are the more interesting characters Mr. Collins created. There is Mrs. Presty, the Mother In Law created by Dante, Mrs. Linley or Norman or Linley and her extremely precocious Daughter Kitty, a Captain Bennydeck, and the attorney Mr. Sarrazin. Mr. Sarrazin is particularly interesting, described as "being English down to the weight of his umbrella"; he is actually of French descent. These alternate personalities are demonstrated when he rescues truffles from a friend's plate, and finding he could have only enjoyed them more were his eyes closed so that he may have concentrated upon them. However when asked whether he can row a boat he replies "In any water you like Mr. Gardener, fresh or salt." And then "Think of asking Me an athletic Englishman, if I could row!"The story is not the strongest of Mr. Collins's works, but is very worthwhile. A decent story that contains great players, and some wonderful dialogue.

Novel Ahead of its Time: Victorian Domestic Drama & Divorce By Amazon Customer Wilkie Collins' "The Evil Genuis" was published in 1886, about three years before the author's death. It is unanimously agreed that Wilkie Collins' works in 1870-80s are inferior to his four masterpieces in the 60s (such as "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone"), but "The Evil Genuis" is a welcome surprise because this is surprisingly well-made and occasionally, very arresting. The novel is well ahead of its time, dealing with such topics as divorce and child-custody, and unlike other works of him in this era, or writers like Charles Reade, the whole effect is not didactic. There is no murder or stolen jewel, but still this domestic drama is quite engaging in its own way.The story starts with a courtroom scene, where the procedure of the jury to decide whether a certain man is guilty or not is described with Collins' amusingly satrical touch. But this interesting sequence is just an introduction to the main part, in which an ill-treated girl Sydney Westerfield is taken under the wing of handsome Mr. Herbert Linley as governess. Herbert is living with his pretty and merry daughter Kitty, his amiable wife and her acid-tongued mother in Scotland. And don't forget, Sydney is sweet-natured and for all her painful past, she is very beautiful.A beautiful governess and husnand in the same house. You should know what happens next (like, Minnie Driver and Tom Wilkinson in the film "The Governess"). You see a newly-born difference between the husband and wife, and then the officious mother-in-law makes it worse. It is a usual course, you may say, but this is a Victorian novel; there are lots of melodramatic coincidences that help the tension rise higher and higher. As melodrama with surprisingly modern subjevt matter "The Evil Genius" has considerble power, written with complelling dialogues. The child Kitty's are memorable among them, who must live among this acrimonious atomosphere. The rest of the story is unpredictable and very interesting, showing the Victorian way of handling the matters like custody and even possibility of re-marriage, but Collins' stance is very ambiguous through the novel about these guilty people. You may remember the historical fact that Wilkie Collins himself never married, but was very happy continuing his relations with two women at the same time.A few words about the title's "Genius." You soon realize to whom this apparently self-evident word refers, but in fact the "genius" means here not the people like Edison, but rather, "a spirit." This "Evil Genius" is used as a kind of antonym (opposite meaning) to "Angel of the House," referring to the very meddling person. That character's description is very compelling, one of the best creations Collins made. Not his best, but still "The Evil Genius" deserves to be read by those who are interested in social matters like divorce and child-custody in Victorian period, or in any good domestic dramas.[about BROADVIEW LITERARY TEXT] Broadview's edition includes Prof. Graham Law's introduction, and 9 pages of notes which are helpful. Also, it has 5 excerpts of contemporary reviews (4 pages), brief samples of advertisements for governess, fashionable news (news about the celebrities), and reports of the real divorce cases.

Collins describes the jury with a satiric humor that leads the reader to believe this is another Moonstone. It is not. This is a story about morality, not mystery. The beginning is just a prologue of the life of Sydney, a traumatized little girl who grows up to be "the other woman" in a triangle with a married man. Collins gives both the wife and mistress a fair hearing given the time period, however the adultery of the husband is somewhat whitewashed. The triangle is further complicated by the daughter whose life is affected by the three adults. The "genius", who I won't give away, is more manipulative than evil; although there are moments of malevolence from this conniving person. The ending is trite given the subject matter, as if Collins didn't want to appear too progressive. However, the book is still worth reading as a character study for the mores of the generation. For readers looking for another Moonstone, try Collins' The Queen of Hearts. For readers looking for an interesting period drama, this should fit the bill nicely.

Day of the month and year, November the thirtieth, one thousand eight hundred and thirty-five. London Time by the great clock of Saint Paul’s, ten at night. All the lesser London churches strain their metallic throats. Some, flippantly begin before the heavy bell of the great cathedral; some, tardily begin three, four, half a dozen, strokes behind it; all are in sufficiently near accord, to leave a resonance in the air, as if the winged father who devours his children, had made a sounding sweep with his gigantic scythe in flying over the city.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A very fine free book By Israel Drazin I have written in the past in my reviews of books by Francis Trollope, the mother of Anthony Trollope, that it is possible today to get classical books for free from sources such as amazon, and many of them are fun to read. I encouraged readers of good literature to take advantage of these sources. The books are now made available at no cost because they are public property; their copyright has expired. "No Thoroughfare" by Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins, two superb writers, is a good example of an excellent book to read. It is a mixture of a play within a novella. There are essentially three plots filled with interesting characters, the kind that these master writers are able to invent. One plot focuses on a foundling who believes that he was taken by his real mother from the institution when he was just entering his teen-age years. She, a wealthy woman, was also convinced because of unusual circumstances that the boy is her own son. The two lived together in a warm and loving relationship for about half a dozen years. When she died, she left her estate to the young man she believed was her son. Then a circumstance arose that revealed to the young man that he was not the woman's true son. He feels very guilty and thinks that the woman who gave him his current wealth really wanted it to go to her natural child. He makes every effort he can to find this person. The second plot focuses on this young man's business partner. He falls in love with a young Swiss woman who also loves him, but the woman is young and under the control of a guardian who refuses permission to the marriage unless the young man can double his income. The young man feels confident he can do so. The young woman goes along with the agreement feeling she owes it to her guardian who is apparently considering what is best for her. However, there is something strange about this guardian. The young man is unable to put his finger on the problem. The third plot is that just at this moment, when the young man needs all the money he can get to double his income, a huge amount of money is stolen from the firm. Who took the money and how was it done. The guardian is acting strangely. Is he involved? Readers will enjoy this tale and those who are familiar with the style of the two great writers will, besides enjoying the drama and the manner in which it is presented, find it interesting to see how the two styles intertwine.

My best advice: get it!!!! and read it!!!! and PLEASE, PROVE ME WRONG!!.

Blackwell Written in collaboration with Wilkie Colllins, this book is representative of the best efforts of both Dickens and Collins. It made me want to revisit the works of both writers. This is a great story, full of twists and turns. I loved it!

This piece is not an argument for or against polygamy. It is a clinical study of how the thing actually occurs among quite ordinary people, innocent of all unconventional views concerning it. The enormous majority of cases in real life are those of people in that position. Those who deliberately and conscientiously profess what are oddly called advanced views by those others who believe them to be retrograde, are often, and indeed mostly, the last people in the world to engage in unconventional adventures of any kind, not only because they have neither time nor disposition for them, but because the friction set up between the individual and the community by the expression of unusual views of any sort is quite enough hindrance to the heretic without being complicated by personal scandals.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Superb, thought-provoking comedy By Israel Drazin This delightful and thought-provoking comedic one-act play raises serious questions about marital fidelity, whether it is adultery when a person only thinks about being unfaithful, and the question of morality generally. Two couples, unknown to each other, with good marital relations but bothered by a sense of sameness and boredom, agree to separate for a short while by taking separate trips on ships. Each of the four meets a married person of the opposite sex and is attracted to the person. The person they meet is the spouse of the other couple. One set falls in love with each other. The husband of the second couple falls in love with the other man's wife; she does not love him but likes being loved by him and likes his company. By chance, all four are on the same ship together and the first couple, after expressing love of one another, overhears the second where the man expresses his love and the woman says she likes being with him. The first couple reveal themselves and says that they overheard the conversation. The four discuss how to handle the matter. The women are satisfied with remaining with their legal spouses while seeing and enjoying the company of the spouses of the other woman from time to time. The men are shocked at the suggestion and consider it immoral and polyandry. They are overruled.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. mi sono perdutamente e definitivamente innamorata di Banana e dell’America ...

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I can focus on my work now! By Mike I can definitely relate to the author that “Dieting” is more challenging and many people freak out about this. I am the person who either has nothing or has everything which is quite problematic especially in terms of healthy eating. This book is a gem to me because it taught me the way I can improve my health and return my body into a new state by practicing fasting. The book is full of useful, easy to read and most importantly interesting information about fasting. I really like that the book contains concepts of many nutritionists and has proven facts of this to work and help people. The idea of having my fasting during the busiest day of the week does magic! I don’t get to focus on my hunger and go crazy about it. The time goes by fast and the next day I feel excellent and motivated for the newer better me!

Fasting Not Starving By Nola Reeds Whenever people hear about the term "Fasting" the thought immediately comes to mind of starving or depriving yourself from Food. Intermittent fasting takes this myth and puts it in a practical, healthy way for people to live with better eating habits. By taking the concepts of fasting and combining it with time, a person can lose weight or maintain an ideal weight without drastically changing how much food they normally eat. The book explains this process and the relationship it has with the food you consume along with a multitude of benefits such as enhanced brain function. A variety of Intermittent Fasting Techniques like the UpDayDown Diet or Fat Loss Fever are also explained in quick detail giving you the tools you need to Fast the Right Way.

In a kitchen of moderate size, flagged with slate, humble in its appointments, yet looking scarcely that of a farmhouse—for there were utensils about it indicating necessities more artificial than usually grow upon a farm—with the corner of a white deal table between them, sat two young people evidently different in rank, and meeting upon no level of friendship. The young woman held in her hand a paper, which seemed the subject of their conversation. She was about four- or five-and-twenty, well grown and not ungraceful, with dark hair, dark hazel eyes, and rather large, handsome features, full of intelligence, but a little hard, and not a little regnant—as such features must be, except after prolonged influence of a heart potent in self-subjugation. As to her social expression, it was a mingling of the gentlewoman of education, and the farmer's daughter supreme over the household and its share in the labor of production.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Typical good MacDonald novel By Maggie Jarpey If you like MacDonald--not the modernized version of him--you'll like this one, and maybe love it. Shorter than usual, not as much to it, a simpler plot and fewer characters, it nevertheless becomes a page turner-=-and of course it offers great insights into God's love. I disagree with some of MacDonald's theology, but one thing he had more "right" than anyone, in my opinion, is the magnificence of God's love. You can't read his novels without thinking about how vast and beautiful is God's love, as expressed in the Lord Jesus Christ. As usual the characters are very real and well-developed. His picture of a good man who has turned into a miser is so real that it made me shiver with the sadness of it. The ending of the love story was absolutely perfect. I reread it to savor it again. There is a delightful play on words at the end.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Showing the depth of God'Love By Nancy Carr I have always felt closer to God because I have read George MacDonald's books. Through the years I have read some over as many as three times. I have kept many of his paper backs because I marked them up to remember important things he wrote about God and life.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Remarkable Read! By Kindle Customer Well-constructed plot woven with wisdom and truth. Couldn't put it down. It bears re-reading and applying lessons shared. Highly recommended!

It was raining, apparently, but she didn't mind—she would put on stout shoes and walk over to Plash. She was restless and so fidgety that it was a pain; there were strange voices that frightened her—they threw out the ugliest intimations—in the empty rooms at home. She would see old Mrs. Berrington, whom she liked because she was so simple, and old Lady Davenant, who was staying with her and who was interesting for reasons with which simplicity had nothing to do.

As the wind veered and grew cooler a ribbon of haze appeared above the Gulf-stream. Young Hamil, resting on his oars, gazed absently into the creeping mist. Under it the ocean sparkled with subdued brilliancy; through it, shoreward, green palms and palmettos turned silvery; and, as the fog spread, the sea-pier, the vast white hotel, bathing-house, cottage, pavilion, faded to phantoms tinted with rose and pearl.

The Firing Line, by Robert W. Chambers

About the Author Robert William Chambers was an American author who is best known for his Art Nouveau short-story collection, The King in Yellow, considered to be one of the most important examples of American supernatural fiction. Chambers was a prolific writer, and although he continued to write within the weird genre, publishing The Maker of Moon, The Mystery of Choice, and The Tree of Heaven, none of his subsequent efforts achieved the success of The King in Yellow. Chambers early works greatly influenced the work of H.P. Lovecraft and other horror writers, as well as the 2014 HBO television show True Detective. Robert Chambers died in 1933 at the age of 68.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Witty period romance with a lot going for it. By Jared Despite the martial title, The Firing Line (1908) only has a single shot fired within its 498 pages, but that one's a doozy. The other 497 pages are about more metaphorical battlefields: the bloody crossfire of convention and the gallant charges of romance. If The Firing Line lacks in action, it overcompensates with a surplus of wit.The primary storyline follows the star-crossed romance of Garret Hamil and Shiela Cardross. Garret is a landscape designer of great reputation (and presumably talent), recently arrived in Florida to undertake a commission on behalf of Cardross Senior, financial magnate.Shiela is his daughter - she encounters Hamil twice by accident. The two charm one another in fabled fashion, but by the time they are officially introduced, Hamil understands the truth: Shiela is adopted. The Hamils, we learn, are one of the oldest and most storied names in Society - to mingle with an adoptee of unknown heritage is, well... not to be.Still, despite conventional wisdom, Shiela and Garret continue to see much of one another. Shiela's a good sport - she's surprisingly witty, a crack shot and an excellent travelling companion. Garret starts off a little too squishy to be true, but his lantern-jawed manliness is tempered by a surprisingly decent sense of humor. Garret is also, in a Chambersian heroic trait, attracted by the genuine and repulsed by the falsely sincere. Perhaps his finest moment is at a party, surrounded by pseudo-intellectuals and societal hangers-ons. Garret is miserable at the event and the author's venom gleams in his protagonist's eyes.Although Garret and Shiela are primly waltzing about in the book's primary romance, other a-wooings are going on in the background. Louis Malcourt has the distinction of not being the only upper-class twit in the book, although he's far-upper-middle, he's not Old Society, something that he clearly resents. He's also the book's bad boy - lovers in every port, a fondness for gambling and a hilariously sarcastic way of speaking that immediately endears himself to the reader.Garret and Shiela soon overcome the adoption issue - even Garret's matron aunt is impressed by Shiela and encourages the match. But their union is not to be. Shiela, it is revealed, is secretly married. To none other than Malcourt. Their union is apparently (cough) unconsummated, more a reckless childhood thing gone horribly awry. Malcourt would be more than happy to grant her a divorce - in fact, he's encouraging it - but Shiela refuses because it would cast shame upon her adopted parents. So their marriage stays a secret and the three characters stay miserable. Garret makes cow-eyes at Shiela, Shiela makes cow-eyes at Garret, Malcourt tries to talk sense into both of them and is repeatedly ignored. The Firing Line contains a few Chambers tropes. The hero being an artist from old money is a familiar figure, and placing his artistic specialty in the outdoors allows Mr. Chambers to throw in a few natural scenes. Throughout, there's a direct correlation between outdoorsiness and abstract "goodliness". Garret, Shiela and Shiela's semi-divine family are all nature-lovers, fond of petting pumas and shooting turkeys. The indolent rich, such as Malcourt's employer, Portlow, feel the need to "own" land, but refuse to use it. Malcourt is a talented rider and woodsman, but doesn't enjoy it. Mr. Chambers uses this to further emphasize his "alien" nature - no matter how charming or conversant Malcourt is, he has a hard time relating to his surroundings, and always feels the outsider. In 2008, he'd be easily diagnosed with depression. In 1908, he's destined for suicide.A second Chambers trope is the "Panic of 1907". A collapse in the market caused a run on the banks. A few bankers (directed by Andrew Morgan) managed to tide themselves over by using their own personal wealth and eventually restore the balance. In Mr. Chambers' books, the Panic is used as a financial Ragnarok - a violent toppling of the Old Money that that fueled high society. Again, like The Danger Mark, characters are defined by their relationships with money. Shiela, wealthy, is happy to go without - and hands her money over to her cash-strapped father without prompting. Malcourt sees money with the same scientific indifference that he does everything else, he's happy to have it (and frequently in need of it), but, like Shiela, pours his savings into helping out others. And Garret, of course, is an artist - he fills an essential societal need and, family funds or not, he'll never starve in a world of Mr. Chambers' creation.Perhaps the best compliment I can pay The Firing Line is that, for a period romance, I had no problem connecting to it. Granted, the vocabulary was a little strange - and the racial politics horrifying - but awkward romantic fumblings are seemingly eternal. Despite being posh twits from a forgotten time, the characters weren't unbelievable. Sadly, the illustrations scattered through the book disrupted that suspension. As described, these are characters in a timeless situation. When pictured, they're just goofy - and wearing way too many layers for Florida.More than that, he demonstrates a witty turn of phrase that made the book - against all odds - enjoyable. There was a derth of swooning and a plethora of sarcasm, and that makes the sort of romance I can get behind.

The eight essays in this volume all deal with the home region of their author; for not only did Mr. Burroughs begin life in the Catskills, and dwell among them until early manhood, but, as he himself declares, he has never taken root anywhere else. Their delectable heights and valleys have engaged his deepest affections as far as locality is concerned, and however widely he journeys and whatever charms he discovers in nature elsewhere, still the loveliness of those pastoral boyhood uplands is unsurpassed.

What’s your favorite science fiction film? At the start of the new millennium, fans who attended science fiction conventions persuaded Flynn and Blackwood—aka “The Film Doctors”—to conduct a survey of the Top Ten Science Films of the 20th Century. They then embarked on a ten-year odyssey to gather thousands of fan votes. The result: a list of science fiction films that probably contains at least one of your favorites. Each film was considered from its inception, to the pre-production period, through production and finally the audience’s reaction, reviews, critical responses and interviews with directors, producers and stars of the movies. An educational enlightening of the motion picture industry, it shows that it truly all starts with a thought, a vision, which when fed, honed and supported becomes “where no man has gone before.”

As I read the book, I took notes: what I have seen, what I missed when I watched the movie the first time and what I have not, so I can get it on Amazon or Netflix. Some have two versions – the original and a recent remake. I have seen both for The Day the Earth Stood Still and I LOVE Patricia Neale in the original. So what if they did not have outrageous special effects. The acting is great. I have my list now and must watch them all.— CJ Loiacono

Manchester City: The Secret History of a Club That Has No History, by Mike Devlin

About the Author Mike Devlin, a life-long Manchester City fan, who started writing officially for the club in 2013, and founded the award winning mcfcforum.com in 2010, decided that the history of his beloved club although well documented, was not exactly to his liking: it was just far too serious. He decided to embark on a journey of putting this correct, and what you have in your hands is the result (after the lawyers had removed and censored about half of it). Of course, this is not to say that all others before him have been wrong, just that they haven't been right.

The author tries to mix sarcastic humor with made up stories and historical fact; he just can't pull it off. After tiring of the same redundant theme of jokes I threw the book out before finishing. Don't waste your money.

A cheeky take on the history of Manchester City FC By Russell Ward As a City fan it's been important to have a very good sense of humor over the years. The author has done a very good job of expressing that very typical City humor. A good light reading book that will have you laughing out loud on numerous occasions.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. We're not really here By TheCatInTheHat This was a fantastic book. I've read Manchester: The City Years by Gary James and Richer Than God by David Conn and this ranks up there with them. Mike Devlin has a witty and sarcastic writing style that is a trademark of City fans who have been through it all since the beginning. Sure some of the information here is exaggerated for comedic purposes or just purely made up but knowing City's history, they really aren't that much out of the realm of possibility.I'd recommend this to any City fan who wants to know more about the club's beginnings and can laugh at the absolute absurdity that was synonymous with MCFC until very recently.
