The Dead of Winter, by A.B. Gibson

About the Author Alan Gibson has lived an eccentric life brimming with constant travel, exotic adventure, unusual living spaces, and terrific friends. A brief stint as a copywriter led to a lifelong career in advertising, and he was fortunate enough to flourish on both the creative and media sides of the industry. Alan and his partner, Scott Beard, live with their dogs Archie and Jack, in a rambling old house on a quiet farm, which in the fall opens to the public and becomes a bustling pumpkin patch with hayrides and corn mazes. Oh, and a chainsaw or two, but that’s where any similarity with The Dead of Winter ends.

It seems to me that it was far from right for the Professor of English Literature in Yale, the Professor of English Literature in Columbia, and Wilkie Collins to deliver opinions on Cooper's literature without having read some of it. It would have been much more decorous to keep silent and let persons talk who have read Cooper.

Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences, by Mark Twain

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

By DWD's Reviews Nearly 20 years ago I saw the movie The Last of the Mohicans (Director's Expanded Edition). I knew it was probably not too much like the books, but I was inspired to read James Fenimore Cooper: The Leatherstocking Tales I; The Pioneers, The Last of the Mohicans, The Prairie (Library of America), a collection of his work featuring Natty Bumpo (Hawkeye) and I found them to be horrible. Not just bad, but darn near unreadable. Now, note that I am a top reviewer here at Amazon. I love books, but I hate this author even though I love American history (I am a history teacher), I love frontier stories and I was certainly predisposed to like his works. But, I've always kept my opinions to myself, despite the fact that he had one sentence that lasted more than two pages describing a banquet table that featured a near endless string of semi-colons.Until now.If Mark Twain, the quintessential American writer finds Cooper wordy, clunky and darn near unreadable (to be specific, Twain calls his work "a crime against the English language"), than I can proudly say that I too find James Fenimore Cooper to be a hack.Of course, Twain says it much better. His sarcasm is laser sharp. He is merciless and I laughed out loud. Twain at his best, especially if you are familiar with Cooper.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. English Majors, Authors and Newspaper Hacks Take Note By Rarkm This is by far the best essay on bad writing ever written. More offensive to nature than the bad writer is the "important" writer who uses bloated language, stylistic conceits without reason and obscure, inexact and unnecessary words and constructions. Twain picked (or picked on) James Fenimore Cooper for this little essay -- Cooper was at the time a "major" American author -- and his writing is still taught in schools and universities. Many of Cooper's lesser 19th century contemporaries engaged in the same overblown writing excesses, but Cooper was and is the best known from that period. In picking Cooper, Twain was essentially shooting a tuna fish in a barrel. Their writing styles could not have been more different. Twain had one foot in the 20th century, while Cooper had both feet in the 18th century.Perhaps I am being too harsh. Read the Leatherstocking Tales, then Twain's essay and you decide.Let's just say that I garnered nary a chuckle from Cooper, but laughed until I choked at Twain's essay.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Laugh out loud funny! By noseinabook This is a short story worth reading. While traveling, I read it aloud to my husband. Seriously, he was laughing so hard he had to concentrate on driving! Mark Twain's description of Cooper's writing style is wonderfully funny. There is a part about Indians and a boat that is the best of all. If you read it, you'll understand what I'm talking about. Just download it and read it. After all, it's free. What do you have to lose?

The San Francisco 49ers are among the most dynamic franchises, not only in the National Football League but in all of professional sports. They have won five Super Bowl titles and have produced some of football's most dynamic players in Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Ronnie Lott, all of whom were coached by Bill Walsh, one of the game's most innovative thinkers. The 49ers greatness came 35 years after the franchise began in 1946. During those years, they achieved no conference or league titles, even though they produced eight Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees, including the celebrated Million Dollar Backfield. Offering a detailed look at the 49ers prolonged growing pains, from the 1940s through the mid1970s, Founding 49ers focuses on that mostly unfulfilled time before the DeBartolo family rescued the franchise.

Author Dave Newhouse provides a fascinating look at the 49ers early years through the eyes of the players who gave the franchise its foundation. Ex49ers from the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s share their tales within these pages, including two members of the original 1946 team; Lou Spadia, the last surviving member of the 49ers original front office; former 49ers coach George Seifert; and Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts, son of an early 49ers broadcaster.

These mostly forgotten 49ers didn't win like their successors, but they were highly entertaining, they broke down racial barriers, and they turned San Francisco into a major league city. Founding 49ers captures the history of those preWalsh 49ers like no book before it.

The Television Crossover Universe is a shared reality that is created based in interconnected crossovers. The center is I Love Lucy, so to be in the TVCU, you should be able to do a six degrees of Lucy. Television Crossover Universe: Worlds and Mythology is a combination of material originally appearing on the Television Crossover Universe and new material. This volume consists of three in-depth chronologies detailing some of the wilder theories that have been presented within the Television Crossover Universe's history. Flintstones Forever: The Bedrock Anomaly explains how two modern stone age families became the ancestors of comedic fat and thin duos, and eventually modern families of animation. The Doctor Who Universe explores the world created by crossover connections that lead back to the classic long running BBC series. A League of Their Own: Crisis of the Super Friends focuses of DC super-heroes, as depicted on the screen, attempting to explain the links that trace them back to the Television Crossover Universe. This book is for fans of the fictional crossover, those who obsess over the details of their favorite shows and like to image their favorite characters existing out there in the multiverse.

It seems a lot of it was just copy-pasted from the website, typos and all. Many entries seem to not be written as if they were part of a compilation, and I found a couple that reference this very book as if it were something separate from itself. The premise of the Bedrock Anomaly, the immortality of the Three Stooges, and things like that are occasionally just thrown in as if the reader hadn't just read them at the beginning of the section. All that aside, it's obviously a labor of love, heavily researched, and fascinating. A lot of fun!

Commenting upon one of my earlier novels, in respect of which I had claimed to have been careful to adhere to common probabilities and to have made use only of really practicable methods of investigation, a critic remarked that this was of no consequence whatever, so long as the story was amusing.

Review 'This man Austin Freeman is a wonderful performer' --Raymond Chandler

About the Author R. Austin Freeman is the doyen of the scientific division of detective writing, is best known for his character Dr John Thorndyke. A close and careful investigator and the outstanding medical authority in the field of detective fiction, R. Austin Freeman not only tested the wits of the reader but also inspired many modern detective forensic methods. Much of his long life was spent as a physician and surgeon at the Middlesex Hospital, London. He also held posts in West Africa and later was a medical officer at Holloway Prison. The most famous of the Edwardian detective writers, he rescued the detective story from "thrillerdom" and made it acceptable to a more discerning class of reader.

The background added so much to the story, and the descriptions made one feel as if they were there. The mystery in itself was well-woven, even if the reader connected the stories before the detectives did. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and am looking forward to more Dr. Thorndyke mysteries.

35 of 35 people found the following review helpful. what plus what makes WHAT?!! By Anne Wingate http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002RKR9Q4/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_imgI LOVE Dr. Thorndyke, no matter which narrator is telling the story. This was especially good, with red herrings cluttering up the crime until it is hard to determine even whether there WAS a crime, much less who did it and why. I did figure out what was going on, but that might be because of specialized knowledge I have: Dr. Thorndyke is a CSI before CSIs were invented, and I was a CSI before being a CSI became fashionable. So I was able to follow, and a few times (because the point-of-view character wasn't one of the usuals) to precede, Dr. Thorndyke's reasoning. You might be able to. But whether you succeed or not in solving the crime before Thorndyke does, you'll certainly enjoy this old-time detective story.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. A Wonderful Surprise! By ATB / Molly Black Having gathered together a list of mystery, detective, and crime writers from Agatha Christies Secret Notebooks I turned to both Munsys and Gutenberg to find any of these influences and contemporaries of Ms. Christie. My delight upon finding myself thoroughly engrossed in this novel after the terrible dullness of a previous writer was great. I found that though the story is told in such a way that I knew the reasons and the murderer very quickly that none of my enjoyment in this very readable novel was hindered.I intend to read as many of this author's work as I can as not since Collected Works of Anna Katharine Green (25 Books) have I found such a readable writer from their shared era. This is the third book starring the very learned Dr. Thorndyke. His friend, and as of this book his junior, fulfills the role of sidekick in a typical manner. Dr. Jerris learns and shares, and even if you find it difficult (as I did) that he would not put two and two properly together, I at least found his learning certain things via his friend as instructive of good scientific reasoning as propounded by Dr. Thorndyke.I'm writing this review on an iPod Touch which has the Kindle application. That makes it difficult to keep track of my review. But it does mean I can rate this Kindle eBook properly - the mistakes and typos were few and the formatting unobtrusive and the eBook as a whole looked decent. For free I don't expect linked TOC - though it would be nice.On completion I can say that I highly recommend it.

David Price always wished life would blow up in his face. And then it did. His mother died. The urge to paint left him. Then Sarah came his way, followed by Pete, a psychiatric outpatient. Now David spends his time worrying about Sarah’s eating habits, visiting her terminally ill sister and working as Pete’s carer. When Pete’s odd behaviour starts to leave David fearing for his own safety, he is shocked to discover that Sarah knows the reason why but will not disclose it. What is about to happen will change everything.Funny, moving, compelling and wholly original, A Map of Nowhere leaves us wondering just how well it’s possible to know others and, indeed, ourselves.

By Margitte I am so bowled over by this story, I do not have the words to write a review, and I really mean it.Baggage. The human spirit. The amazing gift of forgiveness. And Karma, steering lives without showing itself voluntarily. After all, 'they say the brain is like an ocean - largely unexplored and pretty much doing its own thing. Unpredictable baffling. A force to be reckoned with. Maybe the brain is more like a smartphone. Fast and powerful when new, sluggish when too many apps are up and running.David Price thought his life was fairly okay. He did relatively well as an artist, he had a relatively good childhood, he coped well. Until he met Sarah, Claire, and Pete. They knew a secret that David did not. And when he finally got to know it, he felt upended by his own backstory. He would feel like an actor in a role he thought he perfected, but suddenly finds himself flattened or fake by the events - like Jim Carey in The Truman Show when the tip of his boat tears a hole in the painted-on sky. Before I reached page 100, I was convinced that this book was not for me. The initial pace was slow, due to the detail often too overwhelming, the issues too unsettling, the atmosphere not something I could handle at this moment in my life. But then the pieces of the puzzle started making sense in their color heaps. David, the first person narrator and protagonist, packed them neatly in colored heaps, before the different characters fitted the tale into one magnificent piece of art. The end left me totally speechless, not because it was a surprise(it was that as well), but because of the emotions I was left with. I wanted to laugh and cry. Happy and sad. Blown away by my feelings.Endearing. Amazing. Well-written, with nothing I would have loved to change in it. Okay, maybe the end, but that would be for selfish reasons. All the elements blended perfectly. Not even the kite strings were left dangling aimlessly in the wind. It has an understated, powerful message. The question the reader is left with is: how would you have handled it?A great book - recommended for sure.

By Peter John Pols It has been said that Intentions may be the most important of Oscar Wilde's critical works. Included in it are four essays: "The Decay of Lying," "Pen, Pencil and Poison," "The Critic as Artist," and "The Truth of Masks.""The Decay of Lying" -- from 1889 -- is an essay couched as a dialogue that Wilde once called it a "trumpet against the gate of dullness." The substance revolves around Wilde's Aestheticism, and he argues (through one character and another) that Art is superior to Nature. . . ."Pen, Pencil and Poison" -- from 1889 -- is a biographical essay on the notorious writer, murderer, and forger Thomas Griffiths Wainewright, who used the pen name "Janus Weathercock," and here Wilde puts forward the notion that that Wainewright's criminality reveals the soul of a true artist. In "The Critic as Artist," -- 1890 -- The Wilde's contends that critics must reach beyond the creative work that he considers."The Truth of Masks" (1885) is an argumentative response to an article of Edward George Bulwer-Lytton's which put forward the notion that Shakespeare had little interest in the costumes that his characters wore.Brilliant and (as always) so well put, Wilde is a joy to read - food for the mind and soul. This is a nice well put together edition - all Wilde lovers well want.

31 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Very, very funny! By Christine Richardson One day this summer I went Wild about Wilde! I think I purchased one copy of each of his works, and have been making my way through them all, (sometimes jumping back and forth), and Intentions is really a wonderful collection of some of his very witty, and very cutting stories. My favorite was 'The Decay of Lying' which is a subject I noticed Wilde writes about in many of his works, like in Dorian Gray. For some reason, this book is missed but many, and I myself just found it by accident, so do yourself a favor and read it! This is a charming and delightful edition! And if you want to read about lying in Dorian Gray:The Picture of Dorian Gray

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Well recommended - you will love it if you love Wilde! By Nice Person First, this is a lovely edition and well worth the money, and it arrived right on time, actually faster than I expected.Second, the book. Not just a wit, Wilde was an intellectual power house. You don't have to agree with him on everything, just enjoy his ability to make his own argument. In "Pen, Pencil and Poison", read how Wilde playfully argues the question, 'is a criminal an artist?' Fascinating!Superior book, lots of wit and it will stretch your mind.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography King Henry V is a history play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in approximately 1599. It tells the story of King Henry V of England, focusing on events immediately before and after the Battle of Agincourt (1415) during the Hundred Years' War. In the First Quarto text, it was entitled The Cronicle History of Henry the fift,.which became The Life of Henry the Fifth in the First Folio text. The play is the final part of a tetralogy, preceded by Richard II, Henry IV, Part 1 and Henry IV, Part 2. The original audiences would thus have already been familiar with the title character, who was depicted in the Henry IV plays as a wild, undisciplined lad known as "Prince Harry" and by Falstaff as "Hal". In Henry V, the young prince has become a mature man and embarks on a successful conquest of France.

King Henry V: Color Illustrated, Formatted for E-Readers (Unabridged Version), by William Shakespeare

About the Author Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.

Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.

Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. great play, the kindle edition is slightly lacking By tolkienist This was my first time reading this play and i found it very entertaining. Several passages were so well written as stir my heart, and I recognized many often quoted lines throughout the text. I would give five stars for the play itself and would recommend it to anyone. My problem lies with the kindle edition. there is no table of contents. There are no page numbers. There are several short sections of text where the letter b is replaced with the letter p. This is slightly distracting.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. King Henry V - Shakespeare - Kindle By Stephen No comment on play; it is a classic. The actual document is very good since it is free. There are some misspellings due to the electronic transformation from paper to digital of the play. It is usually the first letter of the word that is wrong. Volunteers did the work on the Kindle edition, not a publishing firm, so perfection is not expected. However, there are not many errors. In addition, there are lines in French and broken English with Google Translate, you can translate the French lines to see the full meaning. However, it is not necessary since the following English lines provide translation or context to understand the meaning of the French lines.I wish there was foreword or notes in the product but you will need to pay for that service. I go to Wikipedia or literary note services for background on the play or if there is a section, I do not understand.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. To Clarify By Terry Temescu This is the best of the Histories. To clarify, a lot of the reviews have complained about misspellings in the translation from page to digital. Those aren't mistakes. Shakespeare was trying to write the accents of Welsh, Scots and Irish speakers.Bridge becomes Pridge. Not a mistake, though perhaps not the best attempt at an accent.

About the Author Raised a Christian, until high school started. Drinking beers and smoking cigarettes the first weekend, then the remaining weekends of that year drinking and etc. 8th grade began smoking weed, which I did until the night of the accident. Wrapped the car around a telephone pole, I was immediately thrown into a coma. Spent 14 weeks in a coma, lost the ability to move my right side of my body(atrophy). Received a brain injury and lost 4 teeth. I needed to go to therapy for 4 years. I knew what I had to do as soon as I arose.. Thank God I was aware enough to recognize the facts.. Trudged my way through therapy (from a wheelchair to a sanitation worker in a number of years). All glory to God.. I can do all things through him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:13 NIV)... This verse is what I lived by for a very long time..

This is for the Christian that had a life before Christ polar opposite of who you are now in the Lord. As a poet and songwriter, I can say the poems in this book are absolutely heartfelt, introspective and meaningful. A great book for the coffee table and to read with the family.

I am of course prepared to admit that there are prettier places on the face of this earth of ours than Singapore; there are, however, I venture to assert, few that are more interesting, and certainly none that can afford a better study of human life and character. There, if you are so disposed, you may consider the subject of British Rule on the one hand, and the various aspects of the Chinese question on the other.

Here is another fascinating tale by Guy Boothby, one of searches for jewels in the jungle, and murder. A terrific tale of intrigue, treachery and the hunt, from Rangoon to the jungles of Burma; to London, Paris and Italy. The villany and adventure are documentated such that this would make a great movie! Another wonderful mystery from the early 20th century, using language as it was spoken then; delicious, rich and inviting. Great tale for men or women. Give it a try!

Though a young detective, I am not entirely an inexperienced one, and I have several fairly successful investigations to my credit on the records of the Central Office. The Chief said to me one day: "Burroughs, if there's a mystery to be unravelled; I'd rather put it in your hands than to trust it to any other man on the force. "Because," he went on, "you go about it scientifically, and you never jump at conclusions, or accept them, until they're indubitably warranted."

When Ruby's carefully constructed life becomes a shattered mess, Bernadette sees her chance to make everything worse - first by picking up the pieces of Ruby’s career for herself, and then by setting her sights on Ruby's beloved boyfriend of seven years who, with good reason, just walked out on her. Ruby, propelled into her divergent life by fate and friends, must come to terms with the fact that she may not have been as happy before her life fell apart as she thought. I love how it is organized by the geographic area of Michigan as well as for the different interests in camping (i.e. great for kayaking, great for families, great for privacy). Lots of historical information on each campground and there are many listed I wouldn't have known about otherwise. Highly recommend it for people that want to explore tent camping in MI.

In Mrs. Elliott's library at Vernondale a great discussion was going on. It was an evening in early December, and the room was bright with firelight and electric light, and merry with the laughter and talk of people who were trying to decide a great and momentous question.

Patty's stories were written in an earlier and simpler time, with values that have, unfortunately, been lost today. Patty is a simple character, with no guile nor, apparently, any bad traits at all. That's a shame, because overcoming them makes a story better and more heartlifting. Still, not bad stories with believeable characters and great backgrounds

All of this is done in the lovely style of the late 1800's - early 1900's when authors didn't feel the need to rush through a story, of have major plot twists. This was just a sweet story of a girl learning to make a home and growing up.

Calhoun I am rereading it as the "Patty" series was one of the favorite reads of my childhood. As I read it this time through it is easy to see how much of an influence it had on me.

The ten short stories collected here were written by the Bengali poet, writer, painter, musician and mystic, Sir Rabindranath Tagore. Throughout these stories, Tagore's main interest is people and the kaleidoscope of human emotions, as men and women struggle with the restrictions and prohibitions of contemporary Hindu society.

Peace with God is a prerequisite for experiencing the peace of God and comes through accepting Jesus Christ as atonement for our sin and entering into a personal relationship with God by faith in Him. Maintaining that sense of peace comes as we focus on Him and grow in our knowledge of Him through worship, Bible study and prayer. The author has included poems from daily, personal devotion times with Scripture references that focus on the gift of peace available to believers in Christ. Photos taken by the author are used to draw attention to the awesome majesty and power of Almighty God--the true source of our peace.
