Family kitchen adventures By ERIC M JOHNSON We have never said we were 'cooking a meal', but have always described it as an adventure in kitchen science. Rather than insisting that, "no, you must always cook this way", we've had some hilarious fun experimenting. This book has added to our ideas, and we'd recommend it for other "like open-minded and adventurous" souls braving the joys and terrors of the kitchen arena!

The opinions of the time are quite apparent ie those who eat chile peppers are more inclined to drink alcohol since water can not quench the thirst the hot peppers create. All in all it is an interesting read.

By Mike V I gave it some stars because of the value for historians. The description in the kindle store and/or the first page should include the year that it was originally published.

From the Publisher This book is a standard print version using a minimum of 10 point type in a 6 by 9 inch size and library bound. As with all Quiet Vision print books, it use a high grade, acid free paper for long life.

About the Author The life of Arthur Conan Doyle illustrates the excitement and diversity of the Victorian age unlike that of any other single figure of the period. At different points in his life he was a surgeon on a whaling ship; a GP; an apprentice eye-surgeon; an unsuccessful parliamentary candidate (twice); a multi-talented sportsman; one of the inventors of cross-country skiing in Switzerland; a formidable public speaker; a campaigner against miscarriages of justice; a military strategist; a writer in a range of forms; and the head of an extraordinary family. In his autobiography, he wrote: 'I have had a life which, for variety and romance, could, I think, hardly be exceeded.' He was not wrong. But Conan Doyle was also a Victorian with a twist, a man of tensions and contradictions. He was fascinated by travel, exploration, and invention, indeed all things modern and technological; yet at the same time he was also very traditional, voicing support for values such as chivalry, duty, constancy, and honour. By the time of his death in July 1930 he was a celebrity, achieving worldwide fame and notoriety for his creation of the rationalist, scientific super-detective Sherlock Holmes; yet at the same time his later decades were taken up with his advocacy of the new religion of Spiritualism, in which he was a devoted believer.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Turn-of-the-Century Ideas By Lloyd B. Lacy This book was published first in 1895, and the setting is in various small cities in England of that time. The author believed that the public gave too much attention to the character he created, Sherlock Holmes, and neglected his other works. He undoubtedly was justified in this opinion. This novel is an important work because Doyle has been quoted as saying much of the book is based on his relations with an earlier acquaintance. It is therefore possible that the book is at least semi-autobiographical and may be an indicator of some of Doyle's beliefs and attitudes toward his times. It is an epistolary novel, written in the form of letters, "edited and arranged" by Doyle, according to the title page. An introductory note, ostensibly by the fictional Herbert Swanborough, to whom the letters have been sent, claims the letters are herewith published with the thought that some other young man might benefit from the story, and the views, of John Stark Munro. Each letter contains two elements: one part is the narrative of events in the life of a young medical graduate in his efforts to set up a practice, as his own man, with a very little assistance from anyone else; the other part of each letter is didactic, presented as his friendly arguments with his close friend Swanborough. The didactic portions may be genuine expressions of Doyle's belief about religion, politics, ethics, and society. Munro nevertheless is presented as an interesting character, as well as a person who would have been a benefit to society and the world he lived in. Doyle deserves respect as a serious writer of the turn of the century, and not alone for the "entertainments" of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Lloyd Beldon Lacy

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. semi autobiographical tale of Conan Doyle By A Customer This is the story of a young Doctor in Victorian Britain. In this collection of letters written to an american friend, Stark Munro tells of the trials and tribulations that face him as he tries to build his practice. This book gives a fascinating insight into lower middle class life in Victorian Society. It is semi autobiographical and Conan Doyle uses the novel to discus his views on Religion.

Read Ebook Caterva (Argentinian Literature), by Juan Filloy

Caterva (meaning "throng" or "horde") tells the story of seven erudite, homeless, and semi-incompetent radicals traveling from city to city in an attempt to foment a revolution: conspiring with striking workers, setting off bombs, and evading the local authorities. But this is no political thriller. Like his literary "descendant" Julio Cortazar--who mentions this book in Hopscotch--Filloy is far more concerned with his characters' occasionally farcical inner lives than with their radical machinations. With its encyclopedic feel, and its satirical look at both solidarity and nonconformity, Caterva is considered to be among Filloy's greatest achievements.

Review

We Argentinians have lost the last of our true comedians, Juan Filloy, philosopher of the soul: a man whose life managed to span three centuries, because he always knew how to live outside the current of the times.

(Luisa Valenzuela)

About the Author Juan Filloy was an excellent swimmer, dedicated boxing referee, and talented caricaturist; he spoke seven languages and he practised as a judge in the small town of Rio Cuarto, 200 kilometres from Cordoba, where he spent nearly the whole of his life. He died in 2000 at the age of 106. A world champion palindromist, he made use of the entire dictionary in his books, coined new words, and used only seven letters in all the titles of his works. He received various distinctions during his lifetime and was nominated for the Nobel Prize.Brendan Riley is a teacher, translator, writer, and editor. Among other works, he is the translator of Álvaro Enrigue's Hypothermia.

Roberts A really brilliant modernist writer rescued for English-language readers after a hundred years of unconscionable neglect! I am extremely grateful for this first introduction to Filloy, even if it comes late in a lifetime of reading. Caterva--and evidently Filloy himself--are so far unique that it is useless to try to convey his seemingly limitless inventiveness and lightly-worn erudition other than by recommending unreservedly Riley's translation of a stunningly challenging text (if someone without Spanish can say so on trust.) My solution has been to send copies to select friends who are ambitious readers as well. Needless to say, this page-turner is not an easy 'read.'

Rider Haggard's "The Virgin of the Sun", like his classic "King Solomon's Mines", is not written in the mold of a modern wam-bam action adventure. First, Haggard's writing style is more classical, which tends to be a bit verbose. Second, he is not particularly focused on exposition. He doesn't spend much typeface detailing location which is in some regards a shame considering the romantic locations he tends to write on - in this case a virginal South America. Third, his stories are deep and exploratory. Haggard doesn't write to get to an ending, but rather his stories have multiple layers that sit underneath the core narrative. In the case of "Virgin", Haggard explores love, friendship, and women, all while Adventuring across the Atlantic and over South America.Historically, Haggard does a nice job blending Inca history and myth into his adventure tale. In "The Virgin of the Sun", he explores the Inca myth surrounding the rise of one of the Americas greatest pre-columbian leaders - Pachacuti. Now, Pachacuti is most well known for mountain retreat - one of the most recognizable icons in the world - Machu Picchu. "Virgin of the Sun" was published in 1922, only a scant 11 years after explorer Hiram Bingham rediscovered the lost city nestled in the Peruvian mountains. Bingham hadn't yet connected Machu Picchu to Pachacuti, but myth had already surrounded the Inca ruler who's credited with expanding Inca rule to cover a huge swath of territory on South America's western coast.Haggard's story unfolds as a "modern day" anitque hound translates 400-year-old letters found in an ancient chest. The letters tell the tale of Hubert - a fisherman working and living in England. Following a few small adventures and misadventures, our hero, Hubert, meets and befriends a strange man from a foreign land. After Hubert's wife of less-than-24-hours commit suicide and Hubert kills her former lover, he and his friend, Kari, are off into the Atlantic Ocean. Kari acts as a phyiscal and emotional guide to Hubert who's immediately declared a White God by the various natives they come across after finding landfall in South America. In addition to the Victorian era-like romance that leads to his wife's death, Hubert also falls in love with a beautiful Indian princess, Quilla - daughter of the moon. While their loves develops rather abruptly, Haggard does a nice job of using a surprisingly touching romance to further Hubert and Kari's adventure. The story is enjoyable, but takes a little effort to get used to Haggard's writing style. The pace of the story picks up considerably about 1/3 through following Hubert and Kari's flight from England across the Atlantic. Consider this a strong historical adventure.

Less pleasing that Haggard's African Novels By Richard Daines While I enjoyed this book as I do most of Haggard's works, it didn't seem as well constructed as his African novels dealing with the Zulus or his tales of Allan Quatermain. In format it reminded be of his book "The Ancient Allan". Virgin of the Sun is a fantasy tale taking the hero of the book from England to Central and South America in a highly unlikely manner, that said, once the second part of the story got underway it was thoroughly enjoyable and the description of the Inca society made for excellent reading. Haggard's battles were, as always, enjoyable as was the described relationship between Hubert and Kari. For me, the weakest part of the story was the romance between Hubert and Quilla, it was certainly a vehicle to drive the plot but not wholly satisfyingly.

The Virgin By Bwhami so an Englishman saves the life on an Inca salve in England and ends up going to Peru and leading a revolt against the Incan Empire and then going to war with the man he saved. It's a love story and tells a nice tale. If you like stories by H Ryder Haggard this one is a fine tale.

Still friends a decade on? What are the chances? A hilarious, heart-breaking, and decade-spanning portrait of a generation. For a while, Ian, Lauren, and Paul shared the same friends, the same university, the same dreams, and the same potential. Ten years on they are worlds apart. Call centers, charity shops, and bedrooms that smell like cabbage were never part of the plan. The real world doesn't look quite like any of them imagined. But when Lauren, in a moment of nostalgia, cracks open a long-forgotten Hotmail account, she comes face to face with the people these three friends used to be. For two of them it will mean a new beginning to an old love story.Hilarious and heartbreaking, In Real Life paints a searingly honest portrait of a generation and captures a world where human connection is easier than ever before but where relationships remain just as tricky.

The Ideal Life Doesn't Exist By darklittlelady When you reach thirty, you are supposed to live an orderly life, earn a regular income and, ideally, have a spouse and children. It can’t be that hard, can it? Until 2004, Lauren, Ian and Paul went to university together but a lot has changed since then. Now, ten years later, their lives aren’t what they imagined them to be. Lauren has to convince her friends that she’s not interested in blind dates anymore, Ian is broke and Paul’s life is a lie. When I started reading In Real Life, I didn’t know what to expect. Fortunately, I soon found myself among three characters who seemed like close friends. We share the same hopes and fears and even though their lives are quite a mess, Lauren, Ian and Paul’s stories are still believable. If you are around thirty, you probably have a friend who is just like one of them.In Real Life is an easy-to-read novel that jumps between 2004 and 2014 and therefore evokes feelings of nostalgia. You’ll have the ultimate reading experience if you are the same age as the three main characters, because you will be able to empathize with them and relate to their numerous worries. Chris Killen does a brilliant character study introducing three thirty-somethings who stand for a generation of adults striving to lead the ideal life that doesn’t exist. When you think your life isn’t easy, just see what Lauren, Ian and Paul’s lives are like and you’ll find that you are not alone.

It was also pretty bleak, but that probably made it funnier. It's a highly relatable book for anyone who went to university a decade ago. The characterisation is really strong, also often very subtle and nuanced. I'd say this was a funny and sometimes painfully accurate read. Maybe defines a certain generation to some extent.

I normally like depressing books...(is that weird?), but this was in a whole 'notha ballpark. It was depressing simply for the sake of being depressing. Nothing happened, and really apart from the single benefit of making you feel like you were less pathetic than the main characters of the novel, I am not really sure what the point of it all was.It follows a few people, going back and forth ten years, and just...follows them going about nothing. I don't know, perhaps this novel just went right over my head. I can't really think of much to say about this because nothing happened, but I need some bubblegum pop or Hawaiian folk to listen too after that experience. The writing itself is good, I didn't have any problem with it, and I think that if there was at least a slight plot to all of this I might have actually enjoyed this. This story might of been more relatable if it hadn't gone to such miserable extremes. 2.5/5Note: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Even if after you read this, you find backpacking is not the way for you and you would rather be a glampacker, you still get many tips and tricks to make your travel much easier. Especially when making multiple stops, you don't want to be lugging multiple heavy bags through airports you're not familiar with, on trains and in and out of taxis. The book also highlights destinations where you can travel on the cheap and get an even more amazing cultural experience than those spending significantly more than you in the popular tourist towns. I think Thailand was just added to my bucket list :)

It's actually my first time to hear the word glampacker and my dictionary didn't even had that word registered. Well as this book tells so glampacker is a short form for a glamorous packer- bringing unimportant things and staying on a hotel for a comfort rather than in local house or a camp site. Admittedly, I am like that. I always make sure I have money on my pocket for a glamorous trip. Now I wanna travel for 3 months and I want to experience a real adventure and so I bought this book.I'm very satisfied with the information I've gathered. Sorting out important things to carry is the most challenging part for me and I'm so glad the author listed it all. The latter part of this book gave wonderful tips when planning to go to countries in asia and europe. Overall, I never had a second thought of giving this book a five. It is well recommended.

I tend to pack a lot of items for style and I’ve learnt that I am a glampacker. This book gave me information about how to pack which helped me in my glampacking issues. The author made this an easy read and provided us with tips for packing. You don’t have to be a backpacking to employ these tips. It not only tackles packing but gives you tips on choosing a destination. I recommend this book for beginner backpackers or even regular travelers.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Classic Novel Written in 1834 of the Fictitious Rookwood Dynasty in England By Jill M. Heins This 19th Century gothic novel includes a lot of singing. While the words to the ballads become a little tiresome, the novel itself is interesting.Luke Bradley (the son of Susan Bradley Lovel) assumed he was the illegitimate son of Sir Piers Rookwood, but he discovered on the death of his father that his parents WERE actually married. Naturally the current Lady Rookwood wishes to suppress this information, as Luke would supplant her own son (Ranulph) as heir.Luke was raised by gypsies, and is romantically involved with Sybil, grandaughter of the Gypsy Queen, when he meets his cousin Eleanor Mowbray for the first time. Through manipulations of both his Grandfather, Sexton Peter Bradley, and the gypsy queen, they attempt to arrange a marriage with Eleanor instead. Because the family is filled with control freaks they ruin more than one life.I usually enjoy reading this genre, but I only gave it 3 stars because the author doesn't seem to have a very high opinion of women. Most of the women in the novel cheat on their husbands, turn their lovers in to the authorities, or figuratively stab them in the back.

This book is a sequel to Sailboat Projects, first published as an e-book in 2012 and as a printed book in 2013. Author Clarence Jones has been a sailor most of his life. Much of his pleasure in sailing has been creating projects for his boats that enhanced their performance or made them easier to sail. More fun. He writes. He invents. He tinkers. He sails. That's what this book is all about. Each chapter is a project that shows you how to make upgrades and gadgets for a sailboat.. His specialty is making something for $10 that would cost $200 at a boating store. Jones has produced several books and many how-to pieces in newspapers and magazines. His guidelines for these DIY projects – and writing about them – have always been: > Simplicity > Ease of assembly > Minimal cost > Lots of pictures > Readily available materials. The projects in this book vary from very simple (Swaging Rope to Make an Eye, Anchor Retriever) to fairly complex (New Holding Tank Vent to Avoid a Brown Disaster, Wide-Screen Weather Station, AIS and Live TV). Some of them were previously published (or soon will be) in Good Old Boat magazine. There are 18 projects here. Somewhere in there, other sailors will discover lots of ideas to improve their boat and their sailing experience. Welcome aboard.

About the Author Clarence Jones has always been a writer/mechanic/inventor/tinkerer. He started a school newspaper when he was in the third grade, and built a darkroom in the family bathroom two years later. He worked full-time as a daily newspaper reporter while he earned his degree at the University of Florida Journalism School.. His inventive and tinkering skills helped him hide audio recorders and cameras that were some of his investigative tools as a reporter for 30 years in both newspapers and television. His graduate degree as a craftsman was earned when he spent four years building a house on the Gulf of Mexico in the Florida Keys. He published the memoirs of his 30-year reporting career in 2012 – They're Gonna Murder You – War Stories From My Life At the News Front. The title comes from his friends' constant warning. His specialties were organized crime, dope smugglers, dirty cops and crooked politicians. Altogether, he was a newspaper reporter for 16 years at the Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville Journal and Miami Herald. Between the Jacksonville newspapers and the Herald, he was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University for a year. His last newspaper job was Washington correspondent for the Miami Herald. Then WHAS-TV in Louisville made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. He worked undercover for eight months to show how illegal gambling had corrupted politics and law enforcement in Louisville. His first documentaries there gained immediate national attention. Two years later, he returned to Miami as investigative reporter for WPLG-TV. During 12 years at WPLG, he won four Emmys and television’s equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize three times (duPont-Columbia Awards). He left reporting when his first book was published to become a pioneer news media consultant and on-camera coach, training government and corporate executives how to cope with the news media. That first (and best-selling book) was Winning with the News Media – A Self Defense Manual When You’re the Story. Now in its 9th Edition, it is considered by many to be the “bible” in its field. He describes it as "a book that teaches people like you how to deal with sons-of-bitches like me." He has four other books currently available in both print and e-book versions. He and his wife (Ellen Jaffe Jones, also an author and former TV investigative reporter) live on Anna Maria Island in the mouth of Tampa Bay. They sail a 28-foot Catalina.

Not just for sailboats By Jim S How much would you pay to cool your anchored power boat on one of those stifling nights miles away from the closest extension cord? This book will tell you how for $40.And of course that would also work for a sailboat. Which is my point. "More Sailboat Projects" solves boat problems ranging from the disgusting, holding-tank emissions, to the latest high tech, AIS danger avoidance on a big screen, but it's not just for sailboats. It works on power boats too.As a former sailor now happy to let my Yamaha outboard do the work I didn't see anything in this book that wouldn't work on a powerboat up to 35-feet or so.The author offers the most creative, and cheapest, ways to solve some very basic problems like, how do I modify my dumb docking pole to snag that elusive piling. You can buy a smart pole on-line for over $100 or you can spend less than $5 and follow author Clarence Jones' directions to make your own.Sample the contents and see if there isn't something you could use.

Uncontrolled Spin: The Power and Danger of Spin, by Jerry Summers

About the Author JERRY SUMMERS has extensive law enforcement experience in patrol functions, investigations, crime scene reconstruction, arson, and blood spatter expertise, stemming from blood, sweat and tears shed on the streets with bad guys and victims.  Jerry worked in internal affairs, police management, and administration. He rose through the ranks from patrol to police chief, where he served eight years.  He loved serving the people, community and department, but hated the political corruption and politics.  Forced into retirement due to holding people in positions of power accountable for their actions, a fact proven in court, Jerry began his writing career. Jerry has many stories regarding his time on the streets and doing crime scene reconstruction and arson investigations.  You can reach out to him directly through Jerry@JerrySummersAuthor.com if you'd like to hear any...they aren't something to be put in a public forum (not unlike parts of his books).Jerry also has a background as a minister (of the non-judgmental variety) and extensive experience in banking and finance (as well as real estate sales and development, hazardous tree removal, food service, insurance sales, juvenile detention management, mold-removal from wicker baskets, management consulting, teaching, preaching, counseling...you get the picture).Jerry Summers holds an undergraduate degree in pastoral ministry and a master's degree in business administration in marketing from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom. Now, in his retirement, Jerry uses his diverse and unusual background to create memorable dialog, straight forward sexual encounters and crime scenes (yes, they are twisted, but they are also very realistic-Jerry knows from experience) that capture the reader's imagination. His current "unmissable" series includes: Uncontrolled Spin, Unmerited Favor (coming soon) Unrestricted Behavior (expected in July, 2016) and Unexpected Circumstances (expected in November, 2016).jerrysummersauthor.com

By Amazon Customer Full Disclosure: I started reading this book because Jerry Summers is one of my closest friends. I finished reading the book because I couldn't put it down. What started as a favor turned into a very enjoyable read. This isn't just a good first book, it is a GOOD BOOK.I found myself picking up the book every spare minute I had until I had finished it. I knew my friend liked to write, but I was completely unaware he had the talent to tell a story like this. I rated the book pace as steady because Jerry spends a lot of time developing the characters, but he does an excellent job doing so. Some of the characters are complex but leave room for further development in future books without having to go into much background. The characters are believable, realistic, and interesting enough to hold my attention (which is not easy to do). The various plots within the book weave in and out and intertwine keeping you guessing and wondering what will happen next. I'm not necessarily a fan of the "love" scenes, but that is a stylistic preference on my part. Those scenes aren't my favorite, but I loved the book overall because it is rare for a book to keep my attention to the very last page and excite me for a sequel.I am excited about the next book and the twists that can only come from the mind of Jerry Summers. I am looking forward to Jerry's diverse background of law enforcement, marketing, banking, real estate, and religion to continue to weaving entertaining stories that are believable and contain page-turning intrigue. Uncontrolled Spin is an great entertaining read and definitely worth the cover charge.

I really wanted to give this book more stars, but ugh it was so frustrating. Let me say that although not a bad thing, you can tell that this book was written by a man. In the beginning of the book all that I could say was "why do I need to know all of this financial information?" and not only covered once, but several times. I was beginning to think that it was a text book on marketing and business strategy. I did however, start to see glimmers of personality from the characters and was eager to see where the author was going to take it. The transitions from normal conversation to full on over the top sex scene was a bit much for me. They were so unexpected that they almost felt like an afterthought that were added in to break up the droning on and on about business structure. I will say that after the first couple of chapters, the writing got so much better and I was hooked and couldn't wait to see what would happen next. Then it started to feel like the story line got a little murky. The introduction of new characters who then started to dominate the story line left me a bit baffled. When I felt like I had just gotten a handle on the direction of the book, it ended!! Ugh Ugh Ugh! I am sure there is going to be a sequel but I am not sure that I could allow myself to read it out of fear that it will meet the same result of frustration. All and all a very good premise with such promise to be a great book. Just fell a bit flat for this avid reader.

Strong characters, plenty of twists and turns with a story line that is almost impossible to predict or figure out. The world of global marketing, deal manipulation and twisted personalities is the perfect back ground for an unexpected murder. The pace of the story is good, the ending leaving me waiting for book two. I would recommend this book to anyone that loves a good suspense mystery. This book has it all; sex, global marketing, international deals and murder, a story that will not disappoint.

It was eleven o'clock at night when Surgeon Wyley of His Majesty's ship Bonetta washed his hands, drew on his coat, and walked from the hospital up the narrow cobbled street of Tangier to the Main-Guard by the Catherine Port. In the upper room of the Main-Guard he found Major Shackleton of the Tangier Foot taking a hand at bassette with Lieutenant Scrope of Trelawney's Regiment and young Captain Tessin of the King's Battalion. There were three other officers in the room, and to them Surgeon Wyley began to talk in a prosy, medical strain. Two of his audience listened in an uninterested stolidity for just so long as the remnant of manners, which still survived in Tangier, commanded, and then strolling through the open window on to the balcony, lit their pipes.

Boy, was I pleasantly surprised!!What I got was the dark side of English society. Murder, suicide, adultery...great reading for a gloomy winters day!I don't think I would recommend this book for anyone under 14 or so, I'm not sure that they would be able to grasp the more subtle themes of this superb work.
