Review "It's damn good." -John Kretschmer"We recommend readingthis book if you are thinking about becoming a voyager or coastalcruiser. We even stick by this recommendation for you experienced boatowners who have been on the water from childhood (like me). And if youare contemplating buying an old boat with a view to refitting it, thisbook becomes compulsory reading."- John Harries, Attainable Adventure Cruising"I would absolutely put 'How Not to Buy a Cruising Boat' on the short list of essential reading for any aspiring cruiser. And, believe me, I haveread a LOT of great books about cruising. This book has earned a placeat the top of the ranks."-Brittany Meyers, Windtraveler.net"Deb and T.J. have given new cruisers a real gift by putting in theincredible effort to create this well written resource. I highlyrecommend it."-Chris at sailmentor.com"...a very goodadditon to my book shelf and one I'll be recommending to folks rightalong with Fatty Goodlanders 'Buy, Outfit, & Sail' and Geoff Pack's'Blue Water Countdown'."- Bob at boatbits.blogspot.com

About the Author Deb and Tim (T.J.) Akey were never on a sailboat until their first sailing class in 2007. The dream to retire early onto a sailboat was Deb's, but Tim was immediately supportive. They bought their starter sailboat, a Compac 27, in 2008 and learned to live aboard, sail, and maintain her. In 2011 they purchased a Tartan 42 named Kintala, and began prepping her for full-time cruising. They were hoping to cast off the dock lines early in 2015 but a department restructuring in Tim's company left him unexpectedly unemployed in 2013. Faced with the decision to get other jobs or leave early, they decided that they would never have “enough” money, and the boat would never be “ready," so they decided to leave. They departed their home marina, Boulder Marina in Boulder, IL, on Tim's 58th birthday in July of 2013, and after a 10-week boat yard tour, launched Kintala into the Chesapeake at Oak Harbor Marina in Pasadena, MD on October 19, 2013. During the first year of cruising, they motored the ICW, toured anchorages and mooring fields in Florida, took a multiple-month trip to the Bahamas, then found themselves pinned to a dock due to family travails. Their year anniversary was spent looking forward to many more months of white, sandy beaches and aquamarine waters in the Islands for their second year of cruising. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. easy to read and understand By Robert Thompson My husband and I are in the process of looking for our forever live aboard sailboat. Our goal is to purchase the boat by the end of this year, live aboard her for the next two years until my husband retires and then sail off into the sunset...metaphorically. I have learned so much from reading your book! It is well written, easy to read and understand, witty and extremely informative. I especially like the chapters Maintenance in Paradise and Part and Parcel. I highly recommend the paperback version over the kindle version so you can underline and take notes which I have done a lot of! And I love all your tips in each chapter!! It truly is the "bible" for boat shopping. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

By cwyckham A very well written and often funny story of one couple's journey from newbies to cruisers. They did most things right, but were too trusting of certain marine professionals when it came to buying their cruising sailboat. Learn from their brutally honest appraisal of what went wrong and what they should have done differently. The only thing I would add to their assessment is that a carefully selected buyer's broker could have saved them a lot of hassles.

The First Book Anyone Even Thinking About Cruising and Buying a Boat Should Buy By Lvatty I am just starting to think about the possibility of cruising and our 5 year plan is more like a 7-10 year plan but this book is excellent for anyone looking to get out and cruise. I found their blog and read it from the beginning before buying the book and i would strongly recommend that anyone who is considering the possibility of buying a boat first read their blog and buy this book before buying anything else. Many of the "sailing" books etc. out there are a little pricey and this book is a great introduction before even undertaking that minimal investment in the lifestyle. TJ and Deb do not sugarcoat anything which is very important and is refreshing. Not everything is perfect is cruisingland and they aren't afraid or embarrassed to show their mistakes. They provide many recommendations on other resources to review including blogs, books, and apps. My only wish for the book was more explanation of some of the terms within the book. If you don't know what a stay, shroud, babystay, halyard, standing or running rigging, genoa, main, sheet, etc. are then expect to be using google or wikipedia for definitions. But, having to look some things up isn't necessarily a bad thing as you are going to need that vocabulary eventually. I have emailed a little with Deb and TJ a little and have found them friendly and patient. I am not one to submit reviews but feel quite strongly that their effort should be acknowledged and recommended as an excellent introduction to the world of cruising and, for some, perhaps a needed dose of reality.

The scene represents a battlefield, a few days after the battle. At the back are the walls of Troy, partially ruined. In front of them, to right and left, are some huts, containing those of the Captive Women who have been specially set apart for the chief Greek leaders. At one side some dead bodies of armed men are visible. In front a tall woman with white hair is lying on the ground asleep.

Powell Having seen a staged production of this text at the Shakespeare Theater in Washington, DC, I am looking forward to reading the text in detail. In the theater, this was a powerful, painful confrontation of the effects of war on the victims -- the women and children. No heroes, no vainglorious praise of war. Just the horrors of surviving and loss. Troy becomes every war-devastated landscape. The parallels to Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, etc., etc. were not to be denied.Rudell is able to bridge the centuries and make Troy contemporary. The language is both elevated (in the style of classic tragedy) and immediate in its emotional impact.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The great anti-war tragedy by Euripides By Lawrance Bernabo About 416 B.C. the island of Melos refused to aid Athens in the war against Sparta. The Athenians then slaughtered the men and enslaved the women and children, an atrocity never before inflicted on one Greek city-state by another. As preparations were made for the ruinous expedition against Syracuse, Euripides wrote "The Trojan Women," as a plea for peace. Consequently there is a strong rhetorical dimension to the play, which prophesies that a Greek force would sail across the sea after violating victims and meet with disaster. However, there the play also has a strong literary consideration in that the four Trojan Women--Hecuba, Queen of Troy; Cassandra, daughter of Hecuba and Priestess of Apollo; Andromache, widow of Hector; and Helen--all appear in the final chapter of Homer's epic poem the "Iliad," mourning over the corpse of Hector, retrieved by his father Priam from the camp of the Acheans. Whenever I have use "The Trojan Women" in class I have always used at least that last chapter of Homer to set up the play.As with his last play "Iphigenia at Aulis," which tells of the events right before the Achean army left for Troy, "The Trojan Women" reflects the cynicism of Euripides. Of all the Achean leaders we hear about in Homer, only Menelaus, husband of Helen, appears. He appears, ready to slay Helen for having abandoned him to run off to Troy with Paris, but we see his anger melt before her beauty and soothing tones. In this play the Greeks do more than enslave women: they have already slain a young girl as a sacrifice to the ghost of Achilles and they take Astyanax, the son of Hector, out of the arms of his mother so that he can be thrown from the walls of Troy. Even the herald of the Greeks, Talthybius, cannot stomach the policies of his people. The play also reminds us that Helen was a most unpopular figure amongst the ancient Greeks, and there is no satisfaction in her saving her life (Note: you might want to check out Isocrates's "Encomium on Helen," an exhibition speech in which he shows off his talent by defending the hated woman). The idea that all of these men died just so that she could be returned to the side of her husband is an utter mockery of the dead. This translation by Nicholas Rudall focuses on the performance of "The Trojan Women," but it is certainly useful for those interested in the historical or literary aspects of the play as well. Another interesting analogy is to use this play in conjunction with "Lysistrata" by Aristophanes, so that students can compare and contrast an anti-war comedy and drama.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The Saddest of the Poets By Molon Labe Edith Hamilton, in The Greek Way, says that "Euripides is the saddest of the poets" and that "no poet's ear has ever been so sensitively attuned as his to the still, sad music of humanity." The Trojan Women, a heart-rending read, certainly supports these opinions.Written in Athens in 415 B.C. in the throes of the ruinous Peloponnesian War, the play was a condemnatory response to the recent Athenian atrocities against the neutral Greek island of Melos. After taking the island, the Athenians executed all the men and enslaved the women and children. It was an end of innocence of sorts for the city that had long considered itself the world's citadel of what we now call civilization and culture. In criticizing it, Euripides reached back to the central event of the Greek epic heritage, the legendary victory over Troy, for his setting and characters. The resulting tragedy opens in the aftermath of the slaughter of the Trojan men, with Troy in flames and the women being divvied up as slaves to the conquering Greeks. Euripides is unflinching in his depiction of the inhumanities visited upon the vanquished. King Priam's daughter, Cassandra, is raped by Agamemnon, king of the Greeks. His other daughter Polyxena is cruelly murdered. In one of the most moving scenes in all of literature, his grandson Astyanax, a young child and the only surviving heir to the Trojan throne, is taken from his mother Andromache's grieving embrace and thrown to his death from the highest wall of the city. In fact, the only pity and decency presented among the Greeks is found in the Greek messenger Talthybius, who cleans the body of Astyanax and brings it to his grandmother Hecuba after Andromache's pleading to bury him is denied as she is taken away to her fate as a Greek slave. Many have read this work as a blanket indictment of war. I read it as a misanthropic perspective on human nature, with its glimmers of what we call humanity intersticed between the harsh reality of our cruelty, hatred and violence, a reality set free within the lawless terrain of war. Those with a rosy view of our genetic inheritance should generally be given fair warning before engaging the works of Euripides, and The Trojan Women is no different. That said, whatever one's views of our species, this is one of its finer artifacts and it deserves a wide reading despite the passage of over 2,400 years.

The Last 18 is a story of a mother and her two sons, and the bonds between a family that cannot be broken, no matter the ailment. It explores the question: What would you do if you had two months left with a loved one? Do you make their final days comfortable, normal, routine? Act like nothing was different or wrong, like so many request? Or do you attempt the fantastic, the amazing, the miraculous? When Janis Lammey’s two youngest sons—Jay and Brian—are still in high school, she is diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s a late diagnosis. In two months, Janis Lammey is going to die. She will never see her sons graduate from college, she will not cry at their weddings, she will not cradle her grandchildren. But there is one thing that she can still do, and that’s watch her boys play golf. Jay and Brian have a freakish knack for the game. College prospects are on the horizon. It’s only a matter of time before the Tour comes calling. But time is no longer a luxury they have. They set out to do what their mother had wanted to see ever since they first picked up a club: play professional golf. With the help of a college coach, the boys receive an exemption into a tournament where their mother’s dream of seeing them play on Tour can be realized. And so they play, with their mother close-by, the last 18 holes of golf she will ever see.

If possible, this is more brave and honest and unflinching than Belly of the Beast without losing one iota of the hope and affirmation of self worth of the first book. You will re-read this one more than once

By ToThnOwnslfBTru If you are looking for poetry that is honest and real without adding in a bunch of flowery nonsense- buy this & Belly of the Beast. Start with Beast as a intro to her work, but you will devour it. I have read both over & over, each time realizing something I didn't see before. Ashe has a way of putting into words feelings I never knew how to describe. A breathe of fresh air to how stuffy & perfumed some of today's poetry can be.

Even better than I had expected- raw and powerful By aislinn Even better than I had expected- raw and powerful, but carefully and delicately constructed. I truly appreciate the tone and flow of these poems. Each has a very distinct voice, I can almost hear the way the words come off the page. They often read like spoken word poems, which only lends to their feeling of truth. This is Ashe Vernon's truth, and it's beautiful.

Set just before World War I, The Good Soldier chronicles the tragedies of the lives of two seemingly perfect couples. The novel is told using a series of flashbacks, it also makes use of the device of the unreliable narrator as the main character gradually reveals a version of events that is quite different from what the introduction leads you to believe. The novel was loosely based on two incidents of adultery and on Ford's messy personal life.

The Good Soldier, by Ford Maddox Ford

Amazon.com Review First published in 1915, Ford Madox Ford's The Good Soldier begins, famously and ominously, "This is the saddest story I have ever heard." The book then proceeds to confute this pronouncement at every turn, exposing a world less sad than pathetic, and more shot through with hypocrisy and deceit than its incredulous narrator, John Dowell, cares to imagine. Somewhat forgotten as a classic, The Good Soldier has been called everything from the consummate novelist's novel to one of the greatest English works of the century. And although its narrative hook--the philandering of an otherwise noble man--no longer shocks, its unerring cadences and doleful inevitabilities proclaim an enduring appeal.

Ford's novel revolves around two couples: Edward Ashburnham--the title's soldier--and his capable if off-putting wife, Leonora; and long-transplanted Americans John and Florence Dowell. The foursome's ostensible amiability, on display as they pass parts of a dozen pre-World War I summers together in Germany, conceals the fissures in each marriage. John is miserably mismatched with the garrulous, cuckolding Florence; and Edward, dashing and sentimental, can't refrain from falling in love with women whose charms exceed Leonora's. Predictably, Edward and Florence conduct their affair, an indiscretion only John seems not to notice. After the deaths of the two lovers, and after Leonora explains much of the truth to John, he recounts the events of their four lives with an extended inflection of outrage. From his retrospective perch, his recollections simmer with a bitter skepticism even as he expresses amazement at how much he overlooked.

Dowell's resigned narration is flawlessly conversational--haphazard, sprawling, lusting for sympathy. He exudes self-preservation even as he alternately condemns and lionizes Edward: "If I had had the courage and the virility and possibly also the physique of Edward Ashburnham I should, I fancy, have done much what he did." Stunningly, Edward's adultery comes to seem not merely excusable, but almost sublime. "Perhaps he could not bear to see a woman and not give her the comfort of his physical attractions," John surmises. Ford's novel deserves its reputation if for no other reason than the elegance with which it divulges hidden lives. --Ben Guterson

Review `This is the most intriguing, shocking and original book I have ever read. . . . The Good Soldier is the only book I have ever read and wanted to read again immediately . . .'The Times 21/04/01`beautifully written, a wonderful novel but old-fashioned'Norah Naish, Western Daily Press (Bristol)

Review "It is excellent to see a Broadview edition of this seminal modernist work. 'On Heaven' is an inspired choice for an appendix, as is the extract from Henry James: A Critical Study, which will enable the reader to trace Ford's application of his critical analyses. Biography, textual analysis, contemporary response - they're all here. The reader of this edition is well-equipped for satisfying engagement with Ford's great novel." (Sara Haslam )

It truly is one of the saddest stories ever told By Robert Moore I was in a bookstore and picked a copy of this novel up, and from the second I read what I later learned was a famous first sentence (and justifiably so)--"This is the saddest story I have ever heard"--I knew I had to read it. What is truly sad about the book is that the narrator has no conception of where the tragedy in the book lies. While he is articulate and seemingly insightful in his analysis of others, he remains blissfully unaware of his own enormously failings, both in morals and in character. It is indeed a very sad story, but the narrator leaves out the fact that he is quite possibly one of the most pathetic characters in all fiction. If one prefers one's narrators and ostensible heroes to be truly heroic and sympathetic, then this novel will not please. If one, however, can imagine enjoying a novel written with J. Alfred Prufrock as the narrator and central character, then one is in a position to appreciate THE GOOD SOLDIER.The novel is not a page-turner. If you read this novel quickly, you have read it wrongly. The beauty of the book is the exquisite prose, and should be read slowly, savoring each sentence and each sentiment. There is a dreamlike (one could say nightmarish) quality to the book, and one will most enjoy it by allowing oneself to become entranced by the atmospheres summoned up.If you are willing to take the novel on its own terms, with its unheroic and unadmirable characters, with its pathetic elements and situations, and its subtle psychological observations, then there will be few reading experiences that will match THE GOOD SOLDIER. One of the most remarkable novels of the past century. But if you only like novels where there is a definite hero and admirable characters, you probably wouldn't enjoy this very much.

A Little Masterpiece By A Customer One of the greatest examples of the spoken-word novel, The Good Soldier succeeds where authors as great as Conrad have failed. Our narrator does not tell a straight, linear story. No. He forgets things, comes back to them later, revives a subject you thought dead and meaningless only to shed new light on it and make it important.Perhaps the greatest effect the book has is the after-taste. When reading the book, I found it slow and boring. Once I set it down, though, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I had to read it again. And once I began again, I found myself reading it slowly once more, though not from boredom, but rather because I wanted to savor it and take it all in.I encourage anyone who has begun this book only to find themselves tired of it rather quickly to stick with it. You'll be glad you did. You'll find yourself buying copies for friends to read, as I do. This book truly gets under your skin.

Master Craftsman at Work By John Sollami This novel broke new ground when it was written, something in these jaded days that is almost impossible to do. Ford created an unreliable narrator and also wrote about the complex inner workings of relationships, an area of darkness that will always be immune from full enlightenment. His characters also deceive themselves as well as significant others, and yet are always in pursuit of the perfect appearance. The subtlety with which Ford has woven this tapestry makes you think twice and then three times about who his people are and what they want. Unbridled lust also rides through the book, but is forever reigned in by double standards and self-torturing conscience. Although the book requires a patient reader so that it can bloom, its payoff stays with you, and its sharp observations and lack of sentiment make you realize what a brilliant piece of art it is. As such it is not subject to becoming dated or stale, a true test of its merit. I recommend it to anyone looking for a great work.

The History of Baseball Turned on its Head—Four Vintage Tales in One Volume! Welcome to American Flim-Flam, where we poke fun at the game of baseball during its early and formative years in the 1800s. With two full-length novels and two shorter works, Screwballs & Short Hops features a cast of quirky characters in humorous and oftentimes farcical situations as we take aim at satirizing our national pastime. The stories: Big League Balderdash A rollicking tale of the first four decades of baseball with dozens of player profiles and in the center of it all a colossal clash between the rich and powerful industrialist J.B. Sterne and the pugnacious beer baron Pete Schnockerd—with the entire future of the game up for grabs. Vs. Speaking of clashes, two hard-scrabble baseball rivals, Chester Deevers and Bill “Spit” Mullansky duke it out with their teams in a no-holds-barred playoff contest to see who survives each other’s blatant cheating. Chock full of foul language, over-the-top antics and sudden bursts of violence, this is vintage baseball at its finest! Barnstormin’ Flynt Doyle is down on his luck. Once a star outfielder for the Chicago Unions, he’s now been kicked out of the game for his habitual drunkenness and his only way back in is to manage the hapless Baltimore Federals, the worst team ever to play. Follow Doyle as he drags the team across the country on a barnstorming tour in search of a way out of their misfortune. Left Field The baseball era of the 19th century has long been forgotten but an odd bit of memorabilia has managed to pop back into the present day.

Dylan Wade - I’ve been in some pretty tense situations in my life but nothing, and I mean nothing, even comes close to this. I imagine this is the same atmosphere you find on a battlefield, the opposing sides waiting for someone to make the first move, as the air grows thick with resentment and hate. Roman Wade - I didn’t mean for it to get so out of control back then, but I couldn’t reign in my fury. Four years in jail taught me how. Four years with just my thoughts and regrets for company. Rayleigh Stevens - I knew what it meant for us. I knew it meant living this life. The life we were so desperately trying to get away from. I knew it would be hard, but the deeper we get in, the further the people we once were seem. People say that family is the most important thing. But what do you do when your family is also your prison? What do you do when your family makes your decisions for you, whether you like them or not? And what do you do when your family forces you into a situation that makes you want to scream? Dylan, Rayleigh, and Roman are the last people that should be together, but they’re family. And that’s what being a Wade, is all about. WARNING: profanity, mature scenes, and several “GAH what the hell" moments.

Annie is an amazing author and she is still new to writing, but I can already tell that her style is getting better with every book.blThis book is shorter than the previous ones but equally good and also it's so much more "grown up". I like it a lot.The Wade Family is a really weird bunch of people. They complicated and their relationships between each other are.... strained. We have 3 main characters: Dylan, Rayleigh and Roman *sigh*. ANd we have 3 different POVs also.Rayleigh is a tough and strong girl. But she wasn't like that before. Before she was a sweet innocent girl, who after one person she thought was her friend put her through hell. After that she decided that she will never be like that. Weak and pathetic. She wanted to be strong. To make sure she will never end in the situation like that.Dylan. I think he was supposed to be the likable character. He is responsible for his family business but also fights every single day to keep his girl next to him. Even though I feel he likes Ray, I'm not sure he loves her. Most of the times I was angry with him for his choices.Roman *swoon*. I can't say a bad word about him as Annie has officially gave him to me ;) He is handsome and so cocky. I love it. He is a troubled character who after making some really bad choices is trying to make everything right.I loved this book and I cannot wait for the next part!5 heavenly stars! A study of Japanese ghostly traditions By Zack Davisson "In Ghostly Japan" is a collection of old ghost stories, traditions dealing with ghosts, and personal ruminations on the afterlife by the turn-of-the-century Japanese scholar Lufcadio Hearn.Much of the collection is short essays on Japanese traditions such as "Incense," and how incense relates to ghosts in terms of the Shinto and Buddhist religion. There is a true story of an accurate fortune teller know to the author, in "A Story of Divination." "Bits of Poetry" and "Japanese Buddhist Proverbs" translates and teaches several bits of Japanese lore as they relate to the world of the dead. Some essays, such as "Silkworms," are pure conjecture, relating the human ideals of paradise to the daily lives of silkworms. "Suggestion" is a conversation between the author and a monk on the nature of gender and re-birth in the Buddhist tradition.Of true ghost stories, there are few. Many of the ghost stories, such as "Furisode," begin with a short lesson about something Japanese, in this case a long-sleeved Kimono known as a Furisode, and then relates a ghost story dealing with the object. Some, such as "Ingwa-banashi," are pure chilling horror that make you cringe. Other true ghost stories in this collection are "Story of a Tengu," "Ululation," "Fragment" and "A Passional Karma."One of my favorites, a short story called "At Yaidzu," tells of the author swimming out amongst the Obon lanterns, which are put to see to guide home the spirits of the dead, and the feeling he gets being in the Ocean amongst the returning dead. Truly creepy. All in all, "In Ghostly Japan" is a bit more scholarly than ghastly. The writing style is like many books from the 1880's, a bit dry and non-thrilling. It is a good resource for learning about the Ghostly traditions of Japan, but those seeking a collection of Japanese ghost stories will be disappointed.

Like Meeting a Buddha in Hell By Crazy Fox In my snobbier moments I'm somewhat annoyed when people read a book because they saw its movie adaptation. Why not start at the source? It's a sad, sad day indeed when it takes Hollywood to get people to sit down with a good, classic book. Etcetera etcetera. Well, here I am, guilty of much the same, the karmic consequences of my snobbery having come back around to bite me. Years ago I saw the film "Kwaidan" (based on Lafcadio Hearn's retellings of traditional Japanese ghost tales) and loved it, and that's basically what inspired me to read "In Ghostly Japan" here. Which means that I was misled by the title just a bit, for this book is a mixed bag of short pieces, some of which are ghost tales but many of which are not, or not exactly anyway. This was a pleasant surprise, however. Hearn writes of Buddhism in real, down-to-earth Japanese culture (for this, if anything, is the overarching theme of the miscellany, the ghost stories being folkloric examples of Buddhist causality and karma) in an eloquent, personal style redolent of the Romantic flowing rhythms of late 19th-century prose but undergirded by a very solid but understated, unpretentious erudition. The guy knows what he's talking about. His keenly observant and sympathetic eye catches how Buddhism really operates in the Japanese imagination and how it manifests in proverbs and customs and such, but he then goes on to shed much light on these phenomena by analyzing and interpreting them in terms of formal Buddhist scriptures and doctrines--all of which sounds like pretty dry stuff, but it's actually enjoyable and fascinating, even entertaining, due to Hearn's wonderful presentation. Somehow he transcended the tired, misleading "great tradition"/"little tradition" dichotomy (a.k.a. the elite/folk religion dichotomy) before it even started and deftly avoided the twin pitfalls of Anthropology and Buddhist Studies early in the game--all without a bunch of tedious methodological navel-meditating. And what's more, he did so in style! The spooky tales of the karmically unquiet are cool too, of course. Once you start reading, there's not a ghost of a chance you'll be able to put this book down.
