A Trio of Girls and Their Off-Key Father By Amazon Customer I read this in late 2013, and was sorry to see that there were such delays in publication. So if there were any major changes in the book, I wouldn't know. In any case, this is a book that had the potential to be absolutely amazing, and unfortunately fell a little short. On the one hand, the book feels almost like it was written by only one person, which should have been a good thing. However on the other hand, there wasn't enough difference in the four voices to make them seem like separate individuals.This doesn't mean that the book isn't well written, because it is and very much so. The prose is both evocative and simple, with a good balance between the external forces that pull these people through the action, and the internal struggles that motivate how each of them acts. WHEN HE HAS A CAR ACCIDENT, THEY REACH OUT TO HIS DAUGHTER, CASS. SHE HASN'T SEEN HIM SINCE SHE WAS A CHILD. SHE HAS HER OWN LIFE AND HE IS NOT HER REAL FATHER. WITH THE HELP OF AMOS' MALE NURSE, THEY MAKE CONTACT WITH HIS TWO DAUGHTERS. THEY ARE IN THE SAME BOAT AS CASS. WHEN HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR MOTHER WENT SOUTH, SO DID HE. LITTLE DOES AMOS REALIZE HOW HIS ABANDONMENT AFFECTED THESE WOMEN. I'M SURE THAT THERE ARE MANY OF US THAT CAN RELATE TO THIS STORY. IT WAS A GOOD READ AND I TRULY ENJOYED IT.

By DC Avid Reader This was a well written collaboration by three best selling African-American authors; J.D. Mason, ReShonda Tate Billingsley and Bernice McFadden in their perspective voices. The main character, Amos, a musician, who has always had a carefree and nonchalant attitude when it came to family. Amos is the father of three daughters, and abandoned them and their mothers all under different circumstances. Amos loved his daughters' mothers, but could not commit to steady and meaningful relationships with them. Amos' commitment and loyalty was only to the ebony and ivory keys of the beloved piano, no matter the cost. The only true love affair he had was with his music, which he was drawn to like a moth to a flame. Now that Amos has gotten older, suffering from a touch of dementia and an automobile accident, which landed him in a medical facility, he has no family to care and look after him. Eventually, all three of Amos' daughters are notified of his whereabouts and condition, which brought them together to talk about their past and their hopes for the present and future. Amos' daughters were hesitant about reconnecting with their father, after many years of abandonment, but he expressed his true feelings of love to each of them, and his regrets of his past treatment and abandonment of them and their mothers. Father and daughters make amends, but can the love that was once lost, ever be found and recovered again!!

Speaks to the game's beginnings, positions, training, and techniques as explained by Walter Camp, the man who developed the game, loved it, and obviously wanted to give back. The game has evolved and continues to evolve, but the basics are still applicable. It's obvious the game of Walter Camp, especially the attitude of players, was never intended to become what it is today. It is hoped those who read this book would be humbled. I was.

Like two books in one...neither hits the mark By likeparty Book One: A simple entry level treatise on fish, flies, fishing, knots, techniques, and hatches. A little elementary for most but actually quite useful if you are new to Idaho, western fish, or cold water fishing.Book Two: An almost overly detailed atlas of river systems. Without a map in hand, it is almost impossible to figure out where you are or how to get into the river systems. I think if you are an advanced fisherman, you will find this type of detail almost redundant. You can figure out the access points and camping situation from either detailed local maps or an atlas type map/book. There is not enough information to save you the time needed on the ground to find the spots either.Atlas? Get the Benchmark "Idaho Road and Recreation Atlas".Fishing book? Get "Fishing Idaho" by Joe Evancho

A Wrestling Life of this Magnitude is worth more than 140 pages By rballjones A series of vignettes (short tales of his life), evidently told by Gable and written by Schulte. There is more here about Gable's personal life than I expected--and it is welcome. His life and accomplishments--he is clearly one of the greatest athletes and coaches ever--are certainly inspirational. That being said, the book feels overly edited and fairly begs for more. More content. More detail.

A Wrestling Life: The Inspiring Stories of Dan Gable By Amazon Customer A Wrestling Life: The Inspiring Stories of Dan Gable An extraordinary life of inspiring experiences is hard to put in words. The book is told by Dan Gable and written by Scott Schulte. They take you through the vast accomplishments and struggles Dan Gable encountered. Although the book is short, you will be inspired by the life of an ordinary Iowan. Dan Gable will give you life lessons learned by him that will teach you what perseverance is all about. Through the child hood that couldn’t have been more tragic than it was. Through his college days Dan Gable sheds light on how important family should be in your life. You will see how these events didn’t stop him from slowing down his pace nor knock him off the track of becoming the most dominate wrestler of all time. These times actually motivated him to become closer and stronger to his family. As you read through his life you see one outstanding factor that helps him accumulate the dominance in his wrestling career; that is his focus. You see Dan Gable develop a type of focus only known to men in combat or surgeons would have. The amount of time spent training in the gym, wrestling with friends, and running along cars is all for his one goal. When he transfers over to his professional career, it doesn’t stop his focus or his determination. Your veins will be pumping pure of patriotism after learning, in great detail, of his Olympic matches and preparation. You wonder what can this guy accomplish next. The tragic events that shape his life makes you see how real and human he is. Dan Gable realizes that his talent on the mat is just as good as his talent in corner of one. You are electrified by the passion he brings to his coaching career and his athletes. This book is a great read no matter whom you are.

This was an incredible insight to Gable's early years and his growth as an athlete and young man! Most interesting was that nearly all of the book was new stries about Dan and his success, the lessons he learned and the way he coached! Great read!

By Roberto Quiros Amazing guide that will teach you all that you need to know about sea fishing, from the very basics like what kind of boat do you need for your fishing adventure upto how to and tips catch different kinds of big fish in open waters.Also, the final chapter is about Do's and Don'ts that are very useful in order that your fishing experience ends in the best way possible and with a big catch. The most useful is to think about having the right boat for this trip including all the emergency equipment that you might need, as my grandpa used to said; is better have it and don't need it , than need it and don't have it.Amazing guide, very well written. I love it and recommended it!

We had are own boat not too long ago and had tried some sea fishing for a while but now we just like fishing with bait at rivers, lakes and ports with our fishing rods. After reading this detailed book, wow! seriously there was so much that we didn't know about the sport. Well, needless to say , I feel that i have had a professional course on fishing and am more confident that we can definitely catch fish the next time we go out. This is a must have guide for all who love the fishing hobby!

He had a difficult time learning to read music. Now, he plays his recorder every single night and has progressed, happily,in understanding how to read music. I sent him a text asking how he liked it and his response was "I love it!". Needless to say, we are all very happy with the Learn & Play Recorder Pack.

Sitton The attitudes displayed in Howells' book by the Traveler's host and new acquaintances are completely complementery to much the passes for class and race relations in 2015 in this country. No doubt, Howells was a hopeful utopian, but realized human nature would never change sufficiently for Paradise to be reclaimed.Most surprising of all, Howells style as not as stilted-not stilted at all-as I anticipated when first opening the book. A wonderful read. Just sorry I didn't read it when if was assigned in. History course in college. I wouldn't have to wait 50+ years to read this marvelous book, and I wouldn't have flunked the course for failing to be able to answer questions on the final exam based on the book.

About the Author

Harper Lee was born in 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama. She is the author of the acclaimed To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman, which became a phenomenal #1 New York Times bestseller when it was published in July 2015. Ms. Lee received the Pulitzer Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and numerous other literary awards and honors. She died on February 19, 2016.

Harper Lee's Two Great Classics- To Kill a Mockingbird & Go Set a Watchman By Like2Read Oh my word...there are not enough stars for either or both of these books. Harper Lee is a A#1 author. I had read "To Kill a Mockingbird" years ago; I'm so pleased I have read it again as a mature adult with the wisdom of much more understanding. Her second novel "Go Set a Watchman" is just as compelling & held me absolutely spellbound.My parents were raised in the south, moved to the State of Washington during the depression. I was blessed to be raised "color blind" and I loved that statement describing "Scout." Children are born "color blind".. bigotry & racial hatred are taught. How sad.Harper Lee now has not one but two Classics on book shelves. Great reads.

So rereading it gave me a good background for To Set a Watchman. Both books are well written. Controversial? I did not think so. Everything in each story can be put in context of the time the book (era) was written. To Set a Watchman was more thorough with the characters. The reader gets to watch Scout struggle with her ideals and how she resolves them.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Lifetime of Sports By Sam Sattler David Zang’s I Wore Babe Ruth’s Hat is a bit hard to describe. It is probably easier to describe what it is not rather than what it is. Zang has not written one of the more common sports books exposing some kind of doping or recruiting scandal, or a coaching manual, or a motivational exercise, or even a memoir about a championship season from his youth (be it amateur or professional). No, this is, instead, a book celebrating the role of sports in everyday life, a look at how amateur sports, by teaching us how to play and enjoy life, helps give meaning to ordinary lives all over the world.David Zang tells us a bunch of stories here, stories in which he is sometimes the central character and sometimes only one of the minor ones that populate the tales. One of my favorites is the book’s first, “Chip Hilton’s Sports Cult,” because it reminds me so much of my own early reading experiences. Many boys, not long after they start reading independently, discover the world of sports fiction written especially for boys and girls their age. Most often, I suspect, the books are about baseball teams and they come in long series that completely capture the imaginations of those lucky enough to discover them. For the first time in their lives, young readers like Zang and countless others are exposed to the life lessons that sports can teach. Very likely, kids who read these books are sports fans for the rest of their lives. Zang, however, via his adult eyes, does point out that much of what the books have to say about sports building character, and losing and winning, is in fact more myth than reality.Zang shares his sports failures right along with his more successful efforts. An early chapter, for instance, focuses on his experiences as part of his high school wrestling team, not a sport in which the author exactly covered himself in glory. And his recall of those seasons is impressive. Amusingly, however, while doing research for I Wore Babe Ruth’s Hat, Zang found out that a couple of his old opponents remembered the details of those old matches differently than he remembered them – if they remembered them at all.There are stories about the basketball teams Zang played on; about his decision, as a kid, to blow off the rare opportunity to shake Jackie Robinson’s hand when the man was standing all alone just a few feet from him; about the evolution of college football; about the time in the basement of a Baltimore museum he slipped the Babe’s hat (not his baseball cap) on his head when no one was looking; about cheating in sports; about marathon running; about dressing as the field mascot for the Baltimore Ravens; and about impossible dreams. Each of the stories is filled with Zang’s astute observations and conclusions, some of which are bound to surprise most readers – and some that will directly contradict what they think they know about sports.Part memoir, part sports book, I Wore Babe Ruth’s Hat, has a lot to offer.

Dave Zang has written a book that is fun to read By John Steckel Dave Zang has written a book that is fun to read, not only for all the interesting stories he tells, but also in the intelligent manner in which he presents his stories. He creatively mixes personal achievements (and non-achievements) into this book, making it appealing to sports fans and non-fans.He not only participated in many sports, but learned and studied how sports can, in one way or another, be a formulative part of most people's lives. The book is well-written, but not onerous or pedantic. Sports will always be here, as a challenge to those who play and those who only watch. He has made a valuable contribution to making us realize that.

His father was murdered and Terry was raised from infancy by the women who loved his father. The question throughout the book was whether young Hollis would go straight or follow in his father's footsteps. This story is not as fast-paced as the others, but an element of tenseness carries throughout the story. It is a well-written and enjoyable character study.

Enjoyable Yarn By Steven I like Max Brand's stories over most other Western writers because he sidesteps page after page of monotonous action and substitutes the inner thoughts and emotions of his characters. As we get to know them we start to worry over their fate. If that is the kind of story you like, then, you are in luck here.

However, I found "Black Jack" to be dull and monotonous. If a reader is looking for an entertaining read, "Black Jack" doesn't fit that need.

Tilden, was the finest tennis player of any era. He was not nicknamed 'Big Bill' for nothing.How famous a tennis 'celebrity'? He was voted greatest athlete of the first half of the 20th century by athletes. This book represents one of several books by this great tennis mind. His thoughts on tennis psychology and match play alone make this book a must-be on the shelves of any tennis player today. Team tennis, professional tennis 'money' exhibitions, more organized professionalism all were promoted by this man.Read his thoughts of the future of tennis and see how foresighted he was. This great player wanted to be this way back then, and more so, against the USLTA wishes. Sad, but true. If you're a tennis player get all his writings, your game will improve accordingly. Bill Tilden set the tone and style of tennis development beyond "the infancy" he refers to the time of his play. His insights about his peers, illuminated by the photos, will help you analyze your fellow competitors as well.

If you’re like me and have a husband/boyfriend who’s into guns big time and you want to be able to keep up, this is the book for you! Ran across this great guide after my husband took me to the gun range for the first time. I wanted to be able to talk about more than just “aim and shoot” in case anything ever happened in the house without getting all “Duck Dynasty” about it. My husband is so happy now that we can talk the same language, and even the clerk at the gun range was shocked and impressed at both my progress and comfort level around a handgun when we went back! If you need the confidence to handle and know more about guns without getting overwhelmed my the details, this is the PERFECT BOOK!

Therefore, I found this book useful to give myself an insight on how safe and dangerous they can actually be. I've got a very useful for beginners because it talked about things from loading bullets that shooting a rifle. It also talked about other things like really asking yourself why you actually need a gun. Pretty good book
