It is remarkable how closely the history of the Apple-tree is connected with that of man. The geologist tells us that the order of the Rosaceae, which includes the Apple, also the true Grasses, and the Labiatae, or Mints, were introduced only a short time previous to the appearance of man on the globe.

Wild Apples, by Henry David Thoreau

About the Author Henry David Thoreau was an American author, poet, and philosopher, who is best known for his works Waldena treatise about living in concert with the natural worldand Civil Disobedience, in which he espoused the need to morally resist the actions of an unjust state. Thoreau s work heavily reflects the ideologies of the American transcendentalists, and he has long been considered a leading figure in the movement along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson Alcott, and, at first, Nathaniel Hawthorne (who changed his views later in life). In addition to his writing, which totaled more than twenty volumes, Thoreau was an active abolitionist, and lectured regularly against the Fugitive Slave Law. Thoreau died in 1862, and is buried along with Louisa May Alcott, Ellery Channing, and other notable Americans in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.

They made their way separately from the Ukraine to Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York, and back to New Jersey. Their kind love is always at my core. I have named a business for them and planted it here outside of Concord, Massachusetts, a few miles from the hill in Esterbooks’s woods where Thoreau found apple growing with pines, birches, maples, and oaks." ―Phil Zuckerman, Publisher

Thoreau is Wonderful By Nicholas Trandahl I must admit that I wouldn't have read a book about the lore of apples in the 1800s had it not been rather short in length and written by the amazing Henry Thoreau. But as it was, it contained the unmatched descriptions and fervent passion that is so evident in all of Thoreau's writings. I wouldn't recommend this work to anybody that isn't a follower of Thoreau, but for those of us that are, this writing about apples is a quick easy read that inspires you to take a stroll outside with an apple in your hand.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. very interesting By Connie White This book might not be for everyone. It was the first of Thoreau that I have read, and might seem a bit "plodding" to some readers. However, I find his exploration of wild apples, their origin, and how they spread across the country to be quite interesting. Also, his appraisal of the flavors of wild apples compared with our cultivated species reminded me that what we find in our groceries is often just not the same as the flavors of plants from the wild or from our own gardens. And enjoyable read for a winter's evening.

If I was given free front row seats and all I had to do was cross the street, I wouldn’t bother, but after extensive research it appears I’m the only person in the world who doesn’t like the play. Therefore, I’ve given it three stars out of respect for what is clearly a majority opinion when personally I would only give it one.Elizabeth Baker (1876 - 1962) was an English playwright and a proud member of the lower middle class intelligentsia. Her very first play was Chains and was produced in 1909. It has been resurrected many times to rave reviews and has also been a TV production as well as performed multiple times on stage. The play revolved around Charley and Lily Wilson who are members of the lower middle class in Edwardian England. Charley works as a clerk six days a week and Lily is a homemaker. To make ends meet, they take in borders and as the play opens, their present tenant, Fred Tennant (Get it? Tenant? Tennant? Oh, never mind.) decides he has the itch to leave his boring life and go cast his luck in Australia.Much angst ensues as Charley wrestles with going to Australia along with Fred and various members of the cast either encourage or castigate him for even thinking about it. At the end of the play, nothing is resolved and you had to wade through a lot to get to it.There are several attempts at humor, one being the neighbor who doesn’t use the front door but repeatedly climbs over the garden wall (this all takes place off-stage) destroying the garden in the process. This was evidently a real knee-slapper in fin de siècle England.Nonetheless, in spite of my own ambivalence about the production, people in England absolutely adore this play and treat it like Americans treat the National Anthem. If you think lower middle class ennui is your cup of tea, enjoy.

Everyone has seen a hare, either crouched or running in the fields, or hanging dead in a poulterer's shop, or lastly pathetic, even dreadful-looking and in this form almost indistinguishable from a skinned cat, on the domestic table. But not many people have met a Mahatma, at least to their knowledge. Not many people know even who or what a Mahatma is. The majority of those who chance to have heard the title are apt to confuse it with another, that of Mad Hatter.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A REAL CHARMER By s.ferber "The Mahatma and the Hare" was first published in book form in 1911, and is one of H. Rider Haggard's rarer titles. The idea for this short novel came to Haggard, he states in the book's preface, after he had read a newspaper account of a hare that had swum out to sea to avoid being captured by pursuing hounds. In Haggard's story, the self-called mahatma--a spiritual man who is able, when asleep, to view "The Great White Road" on which the souls of those recently departed enter heaven--encounters the hare of the title after that animal's death. The hare tells the mahatma of the hardships and cruelties of his recent life: of how his entire family had been hunted to extinction; of his narrow escapes from hunters, greyhounds, and other hunting dogs; and, finally, of how he met his end. The hare also gets to debate the issue of animal rights with his chief hunter/enemy, near the book's end. This hunter is given time to plead his case, but Haggard's sympathies (and the reader's) are certainly with the poor, oppressed hare. This is a book that animal-rights activists will just adore, not to mention those readers who loved Richard Adams' "Watership Down." It is simply but beautifully written by Mr. Haggard; his only piece of fiction from the period 1910-11. Haggard, who himself had been an ardent hunter all his life, supposedly gave up the sport after writing this book. But strangely, despite Rider's future abstinence from hunting after this time, he continued to write of this sport in his future novels, especially those dealing with Allan Quatermain. But then again, Quatermain's profession WAS big-game hunting. "The Mahatma and the Hare" is short enough to be easily read in one or two sittings and, with its fablelike quality, is even suitable for the kiddies. Although it shares many of the concerns found in other Haggard novels (spiritualism, afterlife, game hunting), the presentation here is quite different. The author is decidedly trying to alter readers' outlooks and morals with this book, but somehow, the light, simple tone prevents things from getting too preachy. This may be a harder Haggard title to find in its original form, but the copy that I recently read, from Ayer Publishers, is a reprint edition that came out in 2000. It is a facsimile copy of the original Longmans, Green edition, and includes a dozen beautiful illustrations by W.T. Horton and H.M. Brock. For those not willing to shell out major bucks for a first edition, the Ayer volume is a great deal. The book is a real charmer, and I do recommend it.

Mahatma and the Hare is well written, but is very vague and nebulous due to the occult subject matter. Basically it describes a series of travels which the narrator has made on the "great white road" and conversations with a hare he met there. The hare speaks in great detail about the cruelty inherent in hunting. The Mahatma referred to in the title is Jorsen, an occultist who once convinced the narrator not to commit suicide, and who then showed him how to reach the "great white road".The illustrations are OK. They are black and white - nice graphic design. Still this is no Aubrey Beardsley. If you want the book it is for the text, and unless you already know of some very specific reason for wanting this book you are likely to be disappointed as I was.Gutenburg Project has this book available for downloading for free: [...] I recommend reading through the first few chapters there to see if this is a book that you will like or not, before purchasing.

OLD Lady Lydiard sat meditating by the fireside, with three letters lying open on her lap. Time had discolored the paper, and had turned the ink to a brownish hue. The letters were all addressed to the same person—"THE RT. HON. LORD LYDIARD"—and were all signed in the same way—"Your affectionate cousin, James Tollmidge." Judged by these specimens of his correspondence, Mr. Tollmidge must have possessed one great merit as a letter-writer—the merit of brevity. He will weary nobody's patience, if he is allowed to have a hearing. Let him, therefore, be permitted, in his own high-flown way, to speak for himself.

Charming tale of love & detection By Patto First published in 1878, this delectable novella has the complexity of a full-length novel and is full of revolutions and revelations of character. There's a mystery. A banknote for 500 pounds has been stolen from Lady Lydiard out of an unsealed letter. Among the several people who wandered into the room where the letter sat, lovely young Isabel, beloved companion of Lady Lydiard, seems the most likely suspect. You and I and various others feel she must be innocent. But proving it will not be quick or easy. The obstacles in the way of a proper investigation make for a tangled plot. Wilkie Collins gives us a highly original detective too: a dirty old reprobate who does not inspire trust, but is nonetheless awfully good at solving crimes. And finally there's a suspenseful love story. Two men fall in love with Isabel, and the outcome is doubtful to the very end.Wilkie Collins had a weakness for women and in his maturity kept two mistresses at once. However reprehensible his morals, his appreciation of women resulted in vital, appealing female characters. The physical charms and winning ways of Isabel are beautifully portrayed. Even eccentric sixty-year-old Lady Lydiard comes across as an attractive and magnetic character.I loved My Lady's Money and would recommend it to anyone fond of Victorian authors and early detective fiction. The Dodo Press edition offers a pleasant reading experience.

My favorite of his is The Woman in White, but I this book is possibly my second favorite. It truly is a classic. There is a mystery to solve, and there is also a love triangle. But there isn't too much "schmaltz" or sweetness in my opinion. It's also a fast read, since it isn't a very long book with unnecessary details.

Another great book by Wilkie Collins By Israel Drazin “My Lady’s Money,” by Wilkie Collins (1824-1889, a friend and oft-collaborator with Charles Dickens, is another book that readers can acquire for free from sources such as amazon because its copyright has expired. It is a good book, not as good as his “Moonstone” and “Lady in White,” or even “The Hunted Hotel,” all of which are superb dramas that begin with unusual episodes, but it is still good and an enjoyment to read. It is more of an investigative drama. It starts slow but we are drawn into trying to figure out who stole Lady Lydiard’s large denomination bill very soon.Lady Lydiard adopted Isabel Miller, a young, beautiful, charming, and nice, but poor woman. Two radically different men vie for her hand in marriage: The Honorable Alfred Hardyman, a wealthy nobleman, and Robert Moody, of a once rich noble family, who is impoverished, and who works for Lady Lydiard as her steward. Isabel is charmed by Hardyman and is inclined to accept his proposal, but Lady Lydiard warns her that a match with him is impossible because Isabel is descendant of a poorer class and Hardyman’s family and friends would never accept her into the family.Lady Lydiard decides to give a 500 pound note to charity, a huge sum in mid-1800s, puts it into an envelope, but is called away before she can seal the envelop. She sends Isabel to seal the envelope, which she does. It is soon discovered that the 500 pound note was taken from the envelope before it was delivered. Isabel, the last person to handle the envelope, is suspected.Lady Lydiard asks Mr. Troy, a very smart lawyer to investigate. He, in turn, asks a disbarred lawyer Old Sharon for his advice, but is dissatisfied with what he is told. Robert Moody decides to undertake his own investigation. Did Isabel, Moody, Hardyman, or Lady Lydiard’s nephew steal the money, and who will Isabel marry, if anyone?

Awesome Ultralight Backpacking guide By Alex Riches This Ultralight Guide is, like the title asserts, very light and I can confirm that.Everything is explained without any wasted word and just from the beginning you can feel some very positive energy by the author. The backpack is your closest companion, says Benjamin Tideas and I love the way in which presents this concept. This minimalist approach is refreshing in a society where it's better to own more than less. But what if the same concept could be inverted to expose a simple way of life?In this ebook you are guided in planning very wisely all the weight and things you can carry on for long distances, without suffering in vain (survival tips included). Also, you are not left alone in searching for the best way to sleep and eat well on wild roads. Then, 10 essential advices for the best chance of survival are shown with all the necessary items to take with you (and to not forget...).Towards the end, the author shows you how to set up your first ultralight backpack camp in the most simple way through precise steps that everyone can follows successfully.Lastly, just after I finished reading this guide I was able to see a very complete system to live a brand-new lifestyle that could be a life saver in some tough moments, but also an alternative way to live an adventure life. Good job!

Good information, but needs better editing By Christine Tolhurst The book had a lot of good info, however, I was frustrated that it just offered general info and not more specific. I was left with questions like where do I even get solar panels? And what do you mean tv club points?I also think the book needs to be edited for grammar as it was hard to follow.

The previous (2nd) has been a dog eared addition to many many trips. This 3rd edition will be no different, the guide is laid out in an easy reference sort of way, gps points are handy if you really get in a bind, and the authors obvious first hand experience shows throughout. I've even found a few new access points that I was never sure about. Must have, even if you are planning a once in a lifetime float.

Watching Warne, McGrath and Langer leave the field for the last time after the 2007 Ashes whitewash, Michael Hussey knew that life was going to get tough for the Australian cricket side. With these stars retiring and more to follow, he wondered how the team could ever recover. This is the inside story of how it did. No - one foresaw quite how far Australia would fall, or for how long. For the next seven years, disasters on the field were echoed by failings in the boardroom and at the management table. Twenty20 loomed large, three coaches came and went, Ricky Ponting made way for Michael Clarke. The Argus review argued for fundamental change in the team. England took their revenge on the pitch and India asserted its dominance off it. Somehow, though, out of the worst of the chaos in 2013 emerged the sweetest of triumphs: a team of old campaigners and emerging youngsters shook off the recent past to repeat the 5 - 0 Ashes sweep at home. Australian cricket was back. One of Australia's sharpest cricket writers, Daniel Brettig watched all this unfold at close quarters. Drawing upon the frank reflections of a host of key figures in Australian cricket and his own observations from behind the scenes, he seamlessly weaves together events on and off the field into a fascinating insider's account of the lows and highs of recent Australian cricket. Whitewash to Whitewash tells a tale that is in turns ludicrous, uproarious and heroic - and the great comeback stories of modern times.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ‘These were flawed years for the Australian game, its players and its decision-makers’ By Jennifer Cameron-Smith In 2007, Australia won the Ashes Series against England in a 5-0 whitewash, the first time this had been achieved in an Ashes series since 1921. In 2014, Australia repeated the 5-0 whitewash. In between these two successes were many failures: both on and off the field. At the end of the Ashes Series in 2007, Justin Langer, Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne each retired from Test Cricket. Damien Martyn had retired earlier in the series. Everyone expected that the retirements of four such successful players would have a significant impact on the Australian team, but none of us expected it would be as significant as it was.So, what happened and how did the Australian team recover? Daniel Brettig is a journalist who writes about cricket and has added the reflections of a number of key Australian cricket figures to his own observations in writing this book. It makes for fascinating reading: a case study in succession planning, in management of individuals and of adapting to changing circumstances.During that seven year period, the changes included: Twenty20 cricket became more significant in Australia creating its own set of headaches for cricket management; Michael Clarke replaced Ricky Ponting as the Australian captain; and Darren Lehmann became the third Australian Cricket coach since John Buchanan retired in 2007. During the same period, there were a series of controversies: ‘Monkeygate’ - the alleged racial abuse of Andew Symonds by Harbhajan Singh; the sacking of Simon Katich which followed a dressing room incident between Katich and Michael Clarke; the horror of losing three Ashes Series (2009, 2011 and 2013); the ‘homework’ saga and the firing of Mickey Arthur as Australian coach; and the Argus Review into Cricket Australia. Finally, under coach Darren Lehmann (appointed just weeks before the Ashes loss in 2013), Australia wins the Ashes in 2014. Success at last! What I enjoyed most about this book were the insights offered by those players and members of the coaching and management staff into the events of the period. Many of the attempts to manage incidents were reactionary, without (seemingly) much thought being given to either team building or long term consequences. There are questions, too, about how involved the captain and coach should be involved in selection, about how younger players should be welcomed and mentored, about succession planning, and striking a balance between the needs of individuals and the needs of the team. Did Cricket Australia do enough to support Andrew Symonds after ‘Monkeygate’? Oh, and what is being done to foster spin bowling? This is an interesting study of personalities and of management in a game that many of us love. I hope that the current board of Cricket Australia learns from the mistakes of the past.Note: My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher Penguin Australia for an opportunity to read a copy of this book.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

Sueño de una noche de verano (Spanish Edition), by William Shakespeare

About the Author Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.

Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.

Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.

You are here invited to read the story of an Event which occurred in an out-of-the-way corner of England, some years since. The persons principally concerned in the Event are:—a blind girl; two (twin) brothers; a skilled surgeon; and a curious foreign woman. I am the curious foreign woman. And I take it on myself—for reasons which will presently appear—to tell the story. So far we understand each other. Good. I may make myself known to you as briefly as I can.

Poor Miss Finch, by Wilkie Collins

Review `praiseworthy novel ... it is well worth exhuming' David Holloway, Sunday Telegraph

From the Back Cover Wilkie Collins's intriguing story about a blind girl, Lucilla Finch, and the identical twins who both fall in love with her, has the exciting complications of his better-known novels, but it also overturns conventional expectations. Using a background of myth and fairy-tale to expand the boundaries of nineteenth-century realist fiction, Collins not only takes a blind person as his central character but also explores the idea of blindness and its implications. His sensitive presentation of the difficulties, disappointments, and occasional delights which follow the recovery of sight by someone blind since infancy is still one of the best accounts in fiction of a problem which continues to intrigue philosophers, psychologists, and the general public, as it has done since it was first discussed by Locke and Berkeley in the eighteenth century.

About the Author William Wilkie Collins (8 January 1824 – 23 September 1889) was an English novelist.

A Real Curio from the Author of "The Moonstone" By Amazon Customer Wilkie Collins will be justly remembered as writer responsible for "The Moonstone" and "The Woman in White," both written in the 1860s, but after the golden decade he continued to write pretty good books, and his fame was not to suffer very much even though he never gained the zenith of his reputation he gained by these two masterpieces. "Poor Miss Finch" belongs to such post-"The Moonstone" period of the 1870s when he wrote quaint books -- less mystery but more unusual situations. "Poor Miss Finch" is one of them. The story goes around the heroine Lucilla Finch, who lost sight because of cataract since childhood, and now she leads an independent life in quiet countryside. In her life joins the narrator Madame Prantolungo, and the identical twins (both very handsome) Oscar and Nugent. She falls in love with Oscar, and he in her, but one secret he can never disclose to her greatly troubles him, because by doing so, he might lose her love. In the meantime, Lucilla is given a chance to restore her sight. Then, Collins goes on; What if, with the amazing twists and turns of the story, Lucilla is led to think that Oscar's twin brother Nugent is Oscar himself? You say it is a very preposterous development (I remembered David Cronenberg film "Dead Ringers" made in 1988), and that has been the general reception of the book since the publication. But the story keeps a good pace, and if you just suspend your disbelief for a while, you may forget the outrageous situation. After all, it was from the pen of master of suspense. But more important thing is behind the surface of text.Oxford Classics gives very usuful introduction of Catherine Peters, author of acclaimed biography of Wilkie Collins "The King of Inventors," and she places the book in the historical context to explain several aspects of the book. One of the most intriguing is the fact that Collins researched thoroughly medical records of people who regained their sight after long-time blindness since childhood, and their reaction to the newly-given power of seeing. Lucilla experiences many difficulties in identifying objects she sees, and Collins makes good use of those records. Another aspect of the novel which Peters points out is that Collins uses blindness of "Poor Miss Finch" as a means of criticizing rigid Victorian moral codes. As a blind girl, Lucilla is less restrained in observing the strong sense of "respectability." She is made a little willful, obstinate heroine, but it is clearly intentional. With these things in mind, the book might become more entertaining, and inform you something about Vitorians. As a literary work, "Poor Miss Finch" never achieves the height of "The Moonstone" and "The Woman in White," so I recommend those two books if you haven't read them yet. However, if you are interested in something very unique, you can try this one.As Peters says in Introduction, intriguing theme of blindness is recorded in Dr. Oliver Sacks's tale "To See and Not See." This tale can be found in his book "Anthropologist on Mars," and partly became the basis of a film "At First Sight" (1999) starring Val Kilmer and Mira Sorvino. The film is not a masterpiece, but still gives some insight to the topic.

I'd just like to add more on what's truly special about this book, and why I think it deserves a little better notice than it gets.Yes, the plot is improbable, but it's not exactly singular for that alone. A lot of Victorian-era fiction demands we suspend disbelief. It's a fact the Victorian audience wasn't as completely jaded as we are in the 21st century, so judging it by today's standards isn't entirely fair. The book is romantic and at times laughingly improbable, yes, but it's still what I'd consider a ripping good yarn of a book.Aside from this, what made it exceptional at the time was the fact no one had really written from a blind person's perspective before, or at least not with the sort of detail and thought Collins did. The passages written after Lucilla regains her sight (okay, cat out of bag partially but there's MUCH MORE to it) are wonders of insightful prose. Collins describes her challenges with things like depth perception, and in thinking about it doesn't that make perfect sense? Lucilla has to close her eyes, at first, just to make her way across a room. Distance has no meaning for her as she'd never seen it before, or hadn't since before she was one year old.Writing was a challenge, too, though she could write when she was blind. She knew how to form characters but couldn't recognize them when she saw them, much less make them by use of her sight. In another very moving scene Lucilla is shown a round and a square object, and asked "which is round?" She couldn't say. She'd never SEEN the concepts of round and square before. Again, she had to close her eyes and feel them both to know the answer.Throughout all these "tests" Lucilla felt completely humiliated and stupid that she couldn't do these very basic things, and declared she wished she were blind again. Really moving stuff, written with so much empathy and attention to detail. That's an even more exceptional dimension to Poor Miss Finch, in case anyone wasn't swayed by the great storyline. I recommend it very highly to those who love Victorian fiction and would like to explore more of Wilkie Collins's works.

By A Customer Lucilla Finch, the protagonist mentioned in the title of this unusual Collins' novel, is not one of his more endearing heroines. Oft times impetuous and fickle, even in her gentlest moments she's impossibly dull, even with the "affliction" of blindness. This is one of the many flaws in this rare Collins novel. The plot is mercilessly silly and wildly implausible. Collin's characters are mostly cardboard- with the exception of the narrator. Collins is not asking for reader's pity in Lucilla's plight for love in the sighted world, but pity for those who are bound to it's narrowed understanding. Not one of Collins' more accomplished works yet in many ways deeply thought provoking.

Henry James Gives us the 'Moreen' Family By Poetcomic1 The seed of this justly famous novelette came to Henry James in dinner conversation - just the mention of an American born family of upstarts shady and pretentious and traveling Europe like a band of gypsies captured his imagination. The brilliant boy of the family and his tutor become the perfect psychological tools to bring out the situation in all its absurdity. The Moreen family is one of fiction's most delicious creations.

I have been a fan of Henry James since I read his famous classic horror tale, 'The Turn Of The Screw', and his other fine story, 'The Aspern Papers'. Mr. James has since proven himself to be a very prolific writer with two other great short stories; 'The Beast In The Jungle', and 'The Jolly Corner'. 'The Pupil' is a finely woven story told in 19th century prose about a student/ teacher relationship that grows through the years, and the tension they both feel, as the teacher tries to save the boy from the reality of his dismal family life.

By thelizcass This is a short story by Henry James, who would fall under Victorian literature, I think. He wrote during that time and, although he was American, he lived in England for a period of time. It revolves around a boy named Morgan and Penmberton, his tutor and the bond that they form as the boy’s affluent yet penniless family. They travel all over the world trying to make money and take care of their family. I think it’s a good example of class and how important it was at the time. Even if you were broke, if you fell into a certain class, you still earned a certain amount of respect from your piers even if you were skipping out on your hotel bills. I had a little bit of a difficult time grasping what James was really trying to say in this story. It seemed kind of pointless and, not to give too much away, kind of sad at the end. Maybe that was the point, that life has no point and bad thing happen to good people and visa-versa. It wasn’t the greatest story I’ve read, but it was food for thought. It’s kind of a quick read and probably free on Kindle. It may be worth for you to check out.

Nervous water has a meaning: while the fleeting crease or subtle wrinkle on the surface of a lake or stream could be nothing, wise anglers known that these small surface movements are nearly always signs of fish stirring below—as it is with the sport of fly fishing. With a reputation of tranquility and contemplation, it is sometimes hard to believe that, beneath the surface, fly fishing has a constant current of new thoughts and theories, is always in pursuit of new technologies, and entertains ongoing debates among prominent fly-fishing thinkers.Acclaimed fly fisher and author Steve Raymond has contemplated these issues in numerous articles and essays published in many magazines. Nervous Water is the collection of many of these reflections, detailing thirty-four variations on the theme of fly fishing. Tackling such topics as the very definition of fly fishing itself and how to dress for fishing, these variations form a selective opinionated chronicle of the trends, developments, and changes in fly fishing from the 1960s to the present. Steve Raymond also discusses some of the pioneers of the sport and the fish that make it all possible.Nervous Water is a book for everyone who loves fly fishing and all those who enjoy looking beneath the surface.Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Nervous Water: Variations on a Theme of Fly Fishing, by Steve Raymond

Review Few angler-authors can match the skill and insight of Steve Raymond . . ."--The New York Times "Reading Steve Raymond's Nervous Water is much like sitting around a campfire with a good scotch, a fine cigar, and listening to your best friend. The tales and rants are a look into the soul of a man who loves the marvels of nature."--A. K. Best "Steve Raymond has been one of fly fishing's finest writers longer than most of us have been fishing. Nervous Water is a splendid and vastly entertaining celebration of all the big and little things that make fly fishing such a compelling way of life."--Paul Schullery, author of Royal Coachman and American Fly Fishing: A History “…contrasts the tranquil surface of the sport with the trends, debates and issues that roil the waters.”--Seattle Post-Intelligencer”The entertaining stories are a snapshot of Raymond’s life and reveal engaging insights in the complex sport…”--Northwest Adventures“…adds a bit more glitter to the bright thread of fly-fishing gold that runs through the fabric of American sporting literature. Raymond has for several decades made important contributions to the literature of fly fishing. In his collection of loosely connected essays we see him at his intriguing best. There's something for all tastes-easygoing appreciation of the sport's quirks, heartwarming reminiscence, and just simple tales wonderfully told. This is vintage Raymond, and for those who know his work, that means a literary wine to sample and savor.”--Fly Rod & Reel “Here you’ll find 34 essays ranging from outright comedy through some fascinating historical research, from a wry commentary on the burgeoning technologies of the fly-fishing industries and the cult of celebrity to some just plain, excellent fishing stories.” --Flyfishing and Tying Journal “Raymond’s prose is direct, his commentary forthright, frankly opinionated, frequently funny and not without cutting edges…”-- Fly Rod & Reel "In a genre whose longing for the old days and calls for better management are too often scolding and furious, Raymond offers a simpler and more graceful message: Get out ther and pay attention to the wonder of the water."--Seattle Times "…a thoughtful and entertaining collection…"--Fly Rod & Reel

Praise for Steve Raymond's Blue Upright:With Blue Upright, Steve Raymond proves once again why he is the Raymond Carver of fly-fish lit. With elegant, unadorned precision, Steve offers the biographies of his favorite flies, which blossom into an autobiography of Steve Raymond and a history of fly-fishing for salmon, trout and steelhead in the Pacific Northwest, with side trips after bonefish and Atlantic salmon. It is complex wisdom simply presented, and belongs on any literate fly-fisher¹s bookshelf.--James R. Babb, Editor, Gray's Sporting JournalRaymond's storytelling and writing skills enable him to seamlessly work these varied topics into cohesive chapters that both inform and amuse. And no matter where Raymond's thoughts take him, he's always able to convey how each of these tiny fishing flies has affected his life in a big way."--Publishers Weekly "Insightful, informative, and always interesting, this book could be a fitting capstone for the author's literary career . . . "-- Library Journal

From the Back Cover Nervous water: sometimes it’s nothing more than a fleeting crease or wrinkle on the surface of a lake or stream, or a small patch of salt water that looks as if it’s shivering. But wise anglers know that such subtle surface movements are nearly always signs of fish stirring down below. The sport of fly fishing is like that. It has a reputation as a tranquil, contemplative sport, but something is nearly always going on down below: constant currents of new thought and theory, a relentless drive to develop new technologies, an ongoing muted chorus of debate.Esteemed fly fisher and author Steve Raymond has contemplated these issues and presented them in articles and essays published in many magazines. Now, for the first time, many of these works have been collected in a single book—thirty-four variations on the theme of fly fishing. Together they form a selective, opinionated chronicle of the trends, developments, and changes in fly fishing from the 1960s to the present, along with a look back at some pioneers of the sport—and the fish that make it all possible. Most of these pieces have been updated, expanded, or otherwise revised or edited for publication in this book; several appear here for the first time. Some tackle important topics—such as the very definition of fly fishing itself—and others take a light look at the more trivial angling concerns—such as how, or even whether, to dress for fishing.A thoughtful, engaging contemplation of this complex sport, Nervous Water belongs on the shelf of anyone who loves fly fishing.

About the Author Steve Raymond is the author of Rivers of the Heart, Blue Upright, Steelhead Country, The Year of the Angler, The Year of the Trout, and many more. He was the winner of the Roderick Haig-Brown Award for significant contributions to angling literature, and he was also the editor of The Flyfisher and Fly Fishing in Salt Waters as well as a longtime reviewer of fly-fishing books for several publications. After a thirty-year career as an editor and manager at the Seattle Times, he retired and now lives in Clinton, Washington.

I use them as motivation for getting out of the house and on the water. Raymond's accounts can get tiresome if read all at once. However, a story here and there is just right. The writing style can be stilted at times, but I am convinced the author's heart and soul are in the right place.

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

From AudioFile One sometimes forgets how skilled how skilled a writer Grey was; this is a two-part story of a youth turned gunman turned Texas Ranger. Gene Engene has a choppy vocal style; he is given to unexpected pauses, stresses in odd places, and vocalizations that are not entirely full but inject character all the same. The general pace is slow, but his Western cadences fit this Zane Grey oat opera rather well. Engene is effective in delivering distinctive men's voices, often harsh and guttural; he is not so competent with the women, who all sound pretty much the same. Still, readers/listeners of Westerns will generally like this sharply recorded, quality presentation. D.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A riveting read! By Anna Bierne This book, though an oldie, kept me on the edge of my seat. Grey is the masterof western and his descriptions are incredible. I am 13 but I was captured by this gritty novel.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A great adventure yarn By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson Practically born with a gun in his hand, it was inevitable that Buck Duane would end up a wanted man. But, even if not a peaceful man, Duane is an honorable one. And now, there is a highly respected Texas Ranger captain on his heels, and this Captain McNally wants a personal meeting with him. It’s been a long and hard life for Buck Duane, and he is no fool, not for the law and not for the outlaws.Zane Grey (1872-1939) was one of the giants of the Western genre, and this was his fourteenth novel published – by this time he was really hitting his stride. The book itself falls naturally into two parts, almost like two novellas published together. As you would expect with Zane Grey, the main character is tough and unrelenting, and the action is great. So, if you like a good Western, then you will like this book. It’s good, solid Zane Grey – which means that it’s a great adventure yarn that will keep you turning the pages.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. None By V. L. Smith This is the same story as Rustlers of Pecos County. The names are different and it starts with more of a history on the ranger but other than that the plot and most of the dialogue are exactly the same. Good thing it was free or I would be crying foul.
