With behind - the - scenes insight into the intense rivalry between Hamilton and his teammate Fernando Alonso which threatened to derail the young Briton's dream, and the low - down on the 'spy - gate' scandal, this biography describes how Lewis handled the intensity of the media scrum around his relationship with Nicole Scherzinger and kept his dignity to emerge triumphant as he racked up sensational wins around the world. Written by Swedes, translated into English and printed in China. The world is indeed flat! The boats are drop dead gorgeous. The author claims that wooden boats give an experience unequalled by boats made w "plastic". This book gives enough insight into the processes of maintenance and restoration for the average layman. For those who undertake their own restorations the book would probably be somewhat lacking. The boats are mainly Scandinavian in design. Some power. Some sail. All gorgeous. The woods, the construction techniques are timeless. The owners themselves tend to be a little more interesting than the rest of us, too. If I only had the time, money and space! Great way to spend a few winter evenings by the fireplace.

From Nick Alexander, the author of the No 1 ebook hits, The Photographer's Wife, The Half-Life of Hannah and The French House. Alice has been lying to herself for years, holding fast to the belief that the needs of her family far outweigh her own. But her outwardly successful marriage hides dark secrets, and for much of her life, the children were the only reason she stuck around. These days, though her successful banker son lives nearby, his young wife seems to do everything she can to keep Alice at bay. As for Alice's other son, he has always been something of a stranger and has been traveling for so long that Alice isn't even sure what continent he is on anymore. Alice can't help but wonder if the effort she expends presenting a united front to the outside world is actually helping anyone and what would happen if she suddenly stopped pretending. Could life, like the novels she devours, hold surprises in its closing chapters? And if she did shake everything up by admitting the truth about her marriage, would anyone be on her side? Has the time finally come for Alice to put her own needs first? For the first time in years, her heart is racing. Can Alice really change her life? Dare she even imagine such a thing?

Heartwarming, thought-provoking, beautifully crafted story By Noelle Clinton I received this book on my Kindle immediately it was released, having pre-ordered it as I am a recent Convert but zealous Member of the Nick Alexander Admiration Society! I devoured 'The Other Son' in one sitting. The reason it's taken a couple of weeks for me to write this Review is because I wanted to wait a while after finishing it, to have a think about the story. It has so many layers of emotions, telling different facets of the Characters lives, and especially Alice's, from different perspectives. You are at times rooting for the Characters, other times annoyed or frustrated with them, but always invested. Read this book - you won't regret it!

By Felicity This is a book that I can recommend on so many levels. Not only is it beautifully written but it shows how each member of a family unit is damaged by abuse within the family and how they live their lives and conduct their relationships as a result of that abuse. With grace and care the author shows that despite living or growing up within an abusive environment we are all responsible for our own lives and happiness and that happiness can be a choice.

By Robert Oliver Grieveson First NIck Alexander book i have read, found it an absorbing read with some interesting characters - a somewhat unusual and interesting book revealing hidden lives and desires of the characters making for an enjoyable read. i have read there is a short sequel to finish off this story which leaves you with some questions. Some difficult family situations researched and written well and i would say pretty true to life. Will read him again for sure.

Zen and the Samurai Art of Playing Golf Ulrich Nitzschke Based on decades of personal experience in Zen, humanistic psychology, various modern sports and traditional spiritual paths, the author explains, with great expert knowledge and convincing empathy, the overriding importance of awareness in golf and follows up with highly effective training methods. The book illustrates how Western man suffering from stressful daily routine can use golf as a method to enter a path to personal development and growth, just as martial arts of the ancient Japanese Samurai were under the influence of Zen philosophy transformed into modern Eastern spiritual disciplines. After more than three decades of serving in the German diplomatic service Ulrich Nitzschke started in 2004, at the age of sixtyfour, his free lance activities as life coach and author. He sees his new career as the natural outcome of his long-life quest for personal growth and spiritual development, that included Human Potential Psychology, Eastern Spirituality, Western sports disciplines (skiing, sailing and golf) as well as Eastern spiritual paths like Zen-Meditation and Kyudo (Japanese Archery).

Not very useful By BirdHunter I don't enjoy writing negative reviews because i feel like it sends out negative energy, however i also like to help others so you can see my conflict. This book although filled with good intentions will not provide you with much help. First and foremost the author has either never played golf and is trying to write about it or he has played golf and is just not a very good writer. For a book written in 2015 the references are very dated especially considering what statistical information we now have regarding the game (see Mark Broadie Every Shot Counts). The sad part is you get the feeling like the author genuinely believes he is helping you when in fact there is very little substance to this book (this also isnt a case of less is more either). If your looking for some solid mental methods i recommend Red Golf Blue Golf or Tim Gallwey's The Inner Game Of Golf. If you prefer more of a story then i recommend Quantum Golf. I have read many golf books and i really wanted to like this one especially based on the title but sadly i did not. As with any review this was just my experience and yours may differ, i only wanted to share mine.

By Len Esparza Good bock for anyone participating in target sports like golf certainly but also sport shooting, curling, archery, etc. easier read than Herrigel and is a good compliment to his. Zen and its application to life is difficult for westerners (like me) to comprehend. Most books I've read on the topic are steeped in eastern mystic lingo that is tough to understand. And many say that Zen does not lend itself to understanding like mathematics or baking or even explained well; "The Big Book of How to Zen" does not exist and cannot exist. This is a good attempt though and is a good bridge to more in depth practice and application of Zen. Will it make you a better golfer? Maybe, but it will mean letting go of much one thinks about how to become a better golfer. Readers of "Golf Digest" beware!

Good book with lots of good combinations and pictures of how to do the techniques correctly. At the end, there's a list of 57 combinations, broken out by beginner, intermediate and advanced, and those several pages were the crux of the book to me. There explanations of how to do each punch (lead jab, rear cross, lead hook, rear uppercut, lead uppercut and rear hook). I like how he uses "rear" instead of "right" because a left-handed reader might get confused.

This has been a huge help for me By Kitty Smith We have a big standing bag that we use mostly for Muay Thai practice but I've always wanted to improve my non-existent boxing skills so I use it a few times a week for boxing practice. I wanted to learn some combinations so I could develop a routine that worked everything equally and wasn't boring. This book is great! Not only does it give you lots of different practice combinations, but the pictures show you exactly what it should look like. If you scroll the photos quickly it's like watching the combos in action. Plus it has step by step instructions for delivering a punch so your form is right from your feet to your fist. The section on basic footwork is just what I needed, because I tend to be sticky footed and stay in one spot. The drills felt silly at first but after doing them for a week I found myself starting to incorporate the steps into my routine without even thinking about it. I was moving around the bag rather than just standing there throwing punches. The detailed punching technique instructions also helped me take my uppercut from wild to controlled and now there's a lot more power behind it.

His "Widow Maker" series literally changed my life and gave me a confidence and skill set that I never knew existed. I have started doing some heavy bag training at home this year and his book by the same name went a long way towards getting me started with this. This book, "Heavy Bag Combinations", takes things to the next level with an awesome array of heavy bag workout combinations that are both well explained and accompanied by detailed photographs. I loved these workouts, the way that they are making me feel, and I couldn't do it without Franco's guidance.

WINNER in 2015 Beverly Hills International Book Awards and Finalist in 2015 USA Best Book Awards and 2016 International Book Awards! -- A personal historic photospective of Taekwon-Do through Grand Master Bok Man Kim's personal photo collection spanning nearly 60 years. Grand Master Kim's training in the martial arts began in 1941. By 1950, he had joined the Korean Army and was transferred to General Choi Hong Hi's division in early 1955 before the new Korean art was named, and advised Gen. Choi on many things related to Taekwon-Do. He drove Gen. Choi to the Naming Committee meetings where members would agree in 1955 to name the martial art "Tae Kwon Do" and recommend the name to then-president Syngman Rhee. Grand Master Kim was a member of the first Taekwon-Do demo team to perform outside of Korea in China and Vietnam in 1959. He helped Gen. Choi develop 15 of the Ch'ang Hon patterns and provided input on as many as four more. GM Kim helped Gen. Choi write the first English book about Taekwondo in 1963; Taekwon-Do: The Art of Self-Defence was published in 1965. GM Kim was a founding member of the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), and every country where he demonstrated and organized Taekwondo became member nations when it was founded in March 1966. GM Kim also lead the first ITF demonstration team in 1967. In 1978, GM Kim sponsored the 3rd Asian Taekwon-Do Championships in Hong Kong, which was sanctioned and promoted by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). Ten years later, Taekwondo would be a demonstration sport in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. GM Kim has starred in two feature films in Hong Kong in 1973 and appeared in as many as three earlier films. GM Kim has published three earlier books about martial arts: Practical Taekwon-Do: Defenses Against Weapons (1979); Chun Kuhn Do: The Complete Wellness Art (2002); and Taekwondo: Defense Against Weapons (2012), which was selected as a Best Books Award Finalist by U.S. Book News. TAEKWON-DO: Origins of the Art: Bok Man Kim's Historic Photospective (1955-2015) takes readers through the history of Taekwon-Do as seen through Grand Master Kim's photographs.

Taekwon-Do: Origins of the Art: Bok Man Kim's Historic Photospective (1955-2015), by Bok Man KIm

Review As the saying goes, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then this book is worth so much more, truly priceless! It is a compilation of historic photographs and other digital images that correctly paint the true timeline of Taekwon-Do. No longer can people give any credence to the myth that Taekwondo is 2,000 years old. Here in the latest book by Grand Master Kim Bok-Man, a former Master-Sergeant in the Korean Army, one can see Taekwon-Do develop and expand outside of Korea from the very onset by the man largely responsible for the initial dissemination. This book also goes a long way in crediting the true original pioneers, who have been ignored for far too long by the political nonsense often offered as Tae Kwon Do history. I have been blessed to have spent so much time in Grandmaster Kim's company. Now all of the Tae Kwon Do world can invite him into their homes and dojangs for a visit with the pictorial history of our beloved Korean Martial Art of Self-Defense. --Dr. George Vitale, Ph.D., 8th DanFrankly, I can't believe it...Taekwon-Do: Origins of the Art is excellent. The cover alone captures you from the start. Here is a pictorial chronology of a man who has tirelessly dedicated his life to Taekwondo. It is a document of historical importance that, hopefully, will inspire practitioners throughout the millenium. The Taoists say that if you wish to realize immortality, share your knowledge. If this is true, Kwanjangnim Kim will live on forever. --Master Doug Cook, 6th Dan, Author of Tae Kwon Do Black Belt Poomsae, Original Koryo & KoryoGrandmaster Kim Bok Man's photospective is Taekwondo out to prove itself. If ever you wanted to see the most audacious bare-knuckled, no-holds-barred practitioners taking on all challengers, Grandmaster Kim and members of that first historic ITF Demo Team have an incredible story to tell. But this isn't a dusty story of ancient history, it is a page-by-page prelude to what every current day practitioner should know of their art. What a fantastic resource to have in your collection. --Colin Wee, 6th Dan, Coordinator, International Alliance of Martial Arts Schools

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and would love more behind the scenes stories By Amazon Customer "Taekwon-Do, Origins of the Art: Bok Man Kim's Historic Photospective (1955-2015)". Probably the most unique TKD book I've read, in that it tells its story with hundreds of photographs rather than plain text. The history in here is phenomenal, and certainly adds important detail to other works such as the 'encyclopaedias' and "A Killing Art".I did find some of the captions repetitive, for example the naming of the members of the first ITF demo team is repeated several times, and would love more behind the scenes stories.I'm given to understand that this is so the material can be used as is for promotional purposes.NZ and Australian TKD enthusiasts will enjoy seeing plenty of pictures of Rhee Chong Chul and Yun Young Ku, pioneers of ITF Taekwon-Do downunder, who went on to found Rhee Tae Kwon Do and Yun Jung Do respectively. Not for the beginner, but a great book for unashamed TKD nerds.

By Mike Swope If you enjoy learning about early Taekwon-Do history, this book delivers. Grandmaster Kim Bok-Man is the oldest surviving founder of military Taekwon-Do in the ROK Army. He joined General Choi Hong-Hi just weeks before the art was named in 1955, and played many important roles for the next thirteen or so years. Among the roles he had: advisor and instructor of Taekwon-Do for Gen. Choi from 1955-onwards; member of the 1959 Demonstration team to Vietnam and Taiwan; helped Gen. Choi develop 15 of the Ch'ang Hon patterns 1963-1964; leader of the 1st ITF International Demonstration Team; created the first weapons patterns for Taekwon-Do which are still practiced today; and many more. A book you can open and find something new and interesting every time. More information about the book is available from http://www.moosulpublishing.com

His students and associates should enjoy it but I'm not sure about those who did not know him By LT This book is largely a collection of captioned photos relevant to Bok Man Kim with minimal textual content about the origins and development of the art. I found “A Killing Art: The Untold History of Tae Kwon Do” by Alex Gillis much more informative. I imagine this book will appeal to Bok Man Kim’s students but I’m not sure those who did not know him will enjoy it as much. To put this review in perspective, I started training in Tae Kwon Do in 1968 and trained under a number of high ranking Korean instructors on the east coast of the USA however I did not have the opportunity to study under Bok Man Kim. If I had known him I’m sure I would have enjoyed the book more and given it a higher rating.

I bet no one reads this, but I'm writing it anyway By A Customer Jeffrey Farnol is not much remembered, but he seems to have been popular at the time he was writing. I read this book because I heard that Farnol was an important influence on Jack Vance, a science fiction writer I like. This book concerns Barnabas, a young (about 22) son of an English innkeeper who inherits a substantial fortune. He decides to try to join London's fashionable world, and has some success for a while. He becomes friends with a Viscount, has a stumbling romance with a Lady, gets into tons of fistfights, does some horse racing. Eventually, it is discovered that he is only an innkeeper's son, though, and he loses his place in the fashionable world. I think you get the idea. The first part of the book went slowly, and so did the last part. The middle was more interesting to read. Overall, the book was well written and enjoyable.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Well-Written Regency Book By E&M 4.5 StarsThis is the first book I have read from this author. I was interested in reading a Regency book written by a male author. The young Barnabas has just inherited a vast sum of money after his uncle's death. He wishes to become a gentleman so he heads to London but meets some interesting individuals on the way.Clean and light romance. An entertaining read.

He decides he would like to become a gentleman and heads to London. He meets a few interesting individuals along the way including his future love.I enjoy reading books from the Regency period so I truly enjoyed this book.Even though Farnol was born a few decades before Georgette Heyer I find their style of writing a little the same. Entertaining and clean romance.

"I have a conscience, my dear, on this matter," said an old gentleman to a young lady, as the two were sitting in the breakfast parlour of a country house which looked down from the cliffs over the sea on the coast of Carmarthenshire. "And so have I, Uncle Indefer; and as my conscience is backed by my inclination, whereas yours is not—" "You think that I shall give way?" "I did not mean that." "What then?"

53 of 54 people found the following review helpful. One of Trollope's best By Louise Dana Browsing in a bookstore, I read a blurb of this book that told every secret twist of its plot. I was enraged, but read 'Cousin Henry' anyway. It was superb, and illustrates perfectly Trollope's own philosophy, given in 'Barchester Towers,' that a good book will not suffer even from the reader knowing what happens. 'Cousin Henry' has other, and considerable, merits, than suspensefulness--although it is suspenseful. It has been called the most psychologically probing of Trollope's works; indeed, Trollope himself thought it to be so, and was very proud of it. The plot, in brief, and without giving anything away, is this: Cousin Henry is the heir of the Squire of Llanfeare--according to the will everyone knows about. But Henry knows of another, later, will, that disinherits him. Most of the book concerns Henry's agonizing over whether or not to make this will public. There is also another plot thread, concerning the Squire's daughter, Isabel, who can only marry if her husband is willing to take her last name (shades of 'Cecilia'). I'll say it again: one of Trollope's best.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Good, but hardly his best By Judith C. Kinney I love Trollope. He is my favorite nineteenth-century British writer. His style suits me down to the ground. I'd like anything he's written. I have twenty of his books lined up on a shelf. When I want a great treat, I pull one down and read it.I got several chuckles out of poor Cousin Henry vacillating between his desire to do right and his desire to do wrong. Still, I don't think anyone besides the other reviewer here would call COUSIN HENRY Trollope's best book.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Hopefully not his best By Savannah I decided to read Anthony Trollop's "Cousin Henry" after reading the two available reviews. Although I enjoy nineteenth century British fiction, I have to confess I've never read anything by Trollop. The situation is a common one in this genre: Henry is supposed to inherit his uncle's property through entitlement, not because he is loved, admired or respected. Quite the contrary - he is none of those things and this makes up the bulk of the novel. Will Henry live up to, or overcome, his despicable character? While it is well-written, the author does tend to go over Henry's internal conflict again and again and again. Hopefully it's not his best; I look forward to trying something else by him.

The gymnasium was packed as Jimmy Torrance stepped into the ring for the final event of the evening that was to decide the boxing championship of the university. Drawing to a close were the nearly four years of his college career—profitable years, Jimmy considered them, and certainly successful up to this point. In the beginning of his senior year he had captained the varsity eleven, and in the coming spring he would again sally forth upon the diamond as the star initial sacker of collegedom.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Content of character. By Connick I'm a great fan of Burroughs work, especially the Barsoom novels. As such, I was surprised to see such a mediocre review of The Efficiency Expert here on Amazon. Naturally, I picked up the book and read it cover to cover as soon as possible, and I must say that I disagree with the previous review. While it isn't as upbeat and action-oriented as some of his other novels, it still retains the classic Burroughs feel. Jimmy Torrence contains all of the great Homeric characteristics that are at the core of all of Burroughs protagonists; physical strength, mental acuity, honesty, bravery, loyalty and a strong sense of moral responsibility.Jimmy's exemplary nature is what allows him to befriend the likes of The Lizard and Little Eva, two unfortunate products of a harsh world. While not explicitly stated in the text, I feel that Jimmy's compulsion to deal squarely, even with criminals, engenders hope in the hearts of these companions.Jimmy, like John Carter of Barsoom or the reformed Mucker, embodies all of the qualities of a modern role model. What keeps books like this on shelves are people who read them and are inspired by the unflappable righteousness of his characters. I'm not talking about religious righteousness. I mean the sense of duty or guilt for lack thereof that everyone feels when confronted with any given circumstance. Burrough's gift to us is a template for how we should comport ourselves. We should try to be dutiful and brave and honest, keeping in mind our own fallibility, lest we admonish ourselves too harshly for our failures.Read the book and be more like Jimmy!

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A 1921 romantic murder mystery from Edgar Rice Burroughs By Lawrance Bernabo Jimmy Torrence has spent four years in college as a star athlete, blissfully unaware that because of his low grades he is about to fail. This rather contemporary idea is actually how Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of Tarzan, began his 1921 romantic murder mystery, "The Efficiency Expert." Warned by the university president (who is known as "Whiskers"), Jimmy gets his act together and graduates. This story was originally published in "All-Story Weekly" and is one of the relatively few totally realistic stories that ERB wrote. Set in the big cities of New York and Chicago "The Efficiency Expert" is assumed, in part, to reflect ERB's early years when he bounced from job to job before making the writing thing work.Anyhow, Jimmy's father is the president of Beatrice Corn Mills, but Jimmy goes off to Chicago to make it on his own. There he makes friends with the Lizard, a pickpocket who aspires to be a safe cracker, and changes a flat tire for Elizabeth Compton, daughter of Mason Compton, president of International Machine Company. She is engaged to Harold Bince, who will end up running the company one day, but he is not a good person. Meanwhile, Jimmy is having trouble finding a job and earning enough money to eat. You can tell where "The Efficiency Expert" is going in terms of the romance, because ERB always telegraphs such things, but in terms of road blocks there are labor union problems, a murder, a trial, and a prostitute with a heart of gold."The Efficiency Expert" shows that without the fantasy elements that made him so successful with novels about not only Tarzan but also Mars, Pellucidar, Venus, and such, that the stories are competently told but not much more than melodramas. This is one of the few stories that involves any sort of significant court room scenes, which comes across as rather stilted. This particular pulp fiction yarn has the slight disadvantage that the Lizard is the most interesting character in the story. This one is only for fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs who are literally trying to read everything the Master of Adventure ever wrote. Otherwise, this story would not remain in print.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Memorable, likable characters more than make up for a highly unlikely set of coincidences. By DWD's Reviews Written in 1919 and first published in All-Story Weekly magazine in 1921, The Efficiency Expert is a rare non-science fiction book for Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan and John Carter of Mars. I read it on my kindle but if it were a paper book it is estimated to have been about 130 pages. The Efficiency Expert features Jimmy Torrance, a talented young college student who is a great athlete and natural leaders and all around great guy to have at a party but does not take his studies seriously. When he is almost tossed out of college during his senior year for having no apparent hope of completing the curriculum in four years, Torrance buckles down and somehow passes.Having turned over a new leaf, he turns down the opportunity to manage the family factory and decides that he will move to Chicago and make it on his own.Jimmy's expectation that the world will come knocking at his door because he has a college degree is humorous and a reminder that times have always been tough for those trying to break into business. Jimmy's money quickly dries up and he is forced to accept a series of entry-level jobs that require no education at all. While at the bottom he meets a pick-pocket/safe-cracker and befriends a young prostitute (they have a platonic relationship) who help him climb his way into a factory management position, foil a white collar criminal and meet the love of his life. While this is certainly not great literature, it was a very enjoyable read. Burroughs has the ability to take his reader into the darkest jungles, distant planets and into post-World War I Chicago with a clear, vivid style. Memorable, likable characters more than make up for a highly unlikely set of coincidences.

The twelfth of May, 1796, in north Italy, at Tavazzano, on the road from Lodi to Milan. The afternoon sun is blazing serenely over the plains of Lombardy, treating the Alps with respect and the anthills with indulgence, not incommoded by the basking of the swine and oxen in the villages nor hurt by its cool reception in the churches, but fiercely disdainful of two hordes of mischievous insects which are the French and Austrian armies. Two days before, at Lodi, the Austrians tried to prevent the French from crossing the river by the narrow bridge there; but the French, commanded by a general aged 27, Napoleon Bonaparte, who does not understand the art of war, rushed the fireswept bridge, supported by a tremendous cannonade in which the young general assisted with his own hands.

Napoleon is 26 year old, just promoted to general, and is involved in a war against Austria. He is bombastic, over-sure of himself, confident about his destiny, and not at all the Napoleon of his mature years. He is impetuous and lacks cool wisdom. Napoleon's lieutenant is ordered to bring him dispatches, but is duped out of them by a beautiful woman disguised as a man. Napoleon, staying on the fringes of the battle in a hotel, discovers the woman and demands that she hand over the papers. He grabs them but doesn't read them. The interplay between the two - both their behavior and speech - is humorous, for the woman is doing her best to dupe the general. She tells him that she is not a spy. She is only interested in stopping him from receiving one letter, which is from a married woman to a man she loves. She claims that she is a friend of the married woman who begged her to get the letter. Napoleon asks her why the letter was placed among his dispatches and sent to him. Is she telling the truth? Is he the cuckolded husband? If he reads the letter, will he feel that he must act in ways that will ruin his career? Is it better that he never knows what the letter contains? Should he return the letter to the woman unread? If so, how will he be able to disguise the fact that he received the letter and may have read it? Won't this cause problems? Will the letter-snatching woman outwit the general or will he succeed at the end?

Not the best GBS By Claude Lambert Bernard Shaw had a huge influence on me because of his remarks on the way the world works (for instance why we ask more morality from the poor than from the rich - or delightful dialogs like this one:"Why do you pray?" "To remind myself that I have a soul." Shaw's influence has diminished after his death in 1950. Before his death, he was so influential that if he had the flu, it made the first page of European newspapers. Why is he mainly forgotten today, except for a few plays like Pygmalion (My Fair Lady)? There are several reasons: 1) his plays are more cerebral than sentimental, they lack sensitivity. 2) Shaw maintained 19th century socialist views in the 20th century. He remained largely unaware of the dangers of communism and was a proponent of eugenics. Worst of all in my view, he was a supporter of Irish neutrality during World War 2.Now about this play. The subject is Napoleon during the Italian campaign. Napoleon is described as a future despot without a conscience, which he well deserves. The play is a long discussion between him and a woman who stole his mail to prevent him to discover that his wife is unfaithful. It is not Shaw's best play despite a few funny moments. There is more ethics discussion than action. A better view on the subject of narcissistic despots came from Charlie Chaplin The Great Dictator. And if you are interested in the subject and care for music, I recommend Shostakovich Against Stalin: The War Symphonies.

Napoleon meets his match in a brilliant woman agent. The supporting characters are both funny. They cause chaos, but no real harm. As often with Shaw the stage directions are virtually novel length. Modern actors and directors would be rolling on the floor at the first read through. Still, Shaw wrote for the reader as well as the cast. Perhaps readers will still find these explicit descriptions helpful. In Shaw's best plays these nuanced instructions contribute. In his middling plays they can be tolerated. In the rest they make the writing seem klunky. Shaws dialogue still makes reading them worth the effort.

Chasing Sunsets 1 THE JANUARY SUNSHINE CAST an array of shimmering diamonds across the Pacific Ocean that early morning as Mary Catherine kicked off her sandals and headed for the water. “We’ll freeze. Even with our wetsuits.” Sami Dawson, her best friend and roommate, was right behind her, laughing at the insanity of their decision. “Only for a few minutes.” Mary Catherine’s long golden red hair was caught up in a ponytail and it flew behind her as she ran. She was laughing, too, but more because she loved starting her Saturday like this. “Once we’re in we won’t feel a thing.” They carried their boogie boards as they ran through the shallow surf and then jumped over the frigid foamy breakers. In no time they were in up to their shoulders, past the foam and ready to ride the next set of waves. Mary Catherine shook the water from her hair, breathless. “See? It isn’t terrible!” “Sure.” Sami shivered. She nodded to the wave headed their way. “Come on. Keep moving.” They caught the first one and rode it all the way to shore. The spray of cool seawater in their faces, the rush of the powerful ocean beneath them. Mary Catherine loved everything about this. She felt alive and whole and connected to God. A thrilling diversion from the news she’d received last week. The news that her heart didn’t have long. Sometime today she would tell Sami the truth about her health, come clean about the things she’d been hiding. But for now she would enjoy this moment. And she would remember what her mother told her years ago. Life could never be measured in the number of days a person lived, but only by the beautiful, brilliant life that had colored those days. Mary Catherine paddled back out alongside Sami. Her friend’s eyes were wide. “I think I saw a dolphin.” She pointed behind the waves. “Like fifteen feet that way.” Mary Catherine scanned the distant water. “I hope it wasn’t a shark.” “What?” Sami let out a quiet scream. “Don’t say that!” “I’m kidding.” Mary Catherine laughed again. “I saw it, too. A few of them. Definitely dolphins.” Another swell came and again they caught the ride all the way in. They took their boards and sat on the wet sand, trying to catch their breath. Sami shook her shoulder-length dark hair. “Thank you for making me do this. I’m not cold.” “It’s perfect out here.” Mary Catherine headed back out. “Come on. A few more.” They pushed through the white surf to the smooth area and waited. Sami wiped the water from her face. “I can’t wait for tonight. I really think Marcus is onto something with this youth center.” “Me, too. I’m glad we’re going early.” Mary Catherine felt it, the way she always did at the mention of Marcus’s name. A feeling that started in her heart and made its way down her arms and up the back of her neck. She hated the reaction. The last thing she needed was a crush on Marcus Dillinger. “Is he still dating his coach’s niece?” “He is. We’re double-dating with them next week.” Sami wrinkled her nose. “I don’t think they’re a good match.” She shrugged. “I don’t see it.” Between her heart condition and half a dozen charities she was involved with, Mary Catherine certainly had no time to worry about a professional baseball player. The guy could never be her type. They rode a few more waves and then Mary Catherine nodded to the shore. “Let’s dry off.” “Good idea. I still have to do laundry before we meet up with the guys.” Their towels were ten yards up the beach, and after a few minutes they pulled on sweats and sat on the sand facing the water. Mary Catherine turned her face to the winter sun and savored the way it melted through her. How could anything be wrong with her heart? She felt too good to be sick. The quiet suited them. Since rooming together a few years ago they’d had the sort of friendship that could erupt into laughter or feel comfortable in complete silence. They were very different, she and Sami. Mary Catherine broke the silence. “Did you and Tyler have fun last night?” “We did.” Sami’s smile lit up her face more than the morning sun ever could. “I can’t believe how good things are. I think he’s going to ask me to be his girlfriend. Officially.” Mary Catherine jumped to her feet. “Really?” She danced around in a circle. “Yes!” She raised both fists in the air. “Yes, yes, yes!” Then just as quickly she dropped back to the beach. “What in the world is taking so long?” “Well . . .” Sami shrugged, sheepish. “It’s more me. Like I told you.” This time her laugh sounded more nervous. “I needed time.” “Come on.” Mary Catherine leaned back on her hands and grinned at her friend. “You’ve been in love with him since you were in high school.” “But I was practically engaged to Arnie.” Sami’s tone held a mock protest, nothing serious. After a few seconds she burst into the sort of laughter she and Mary Catherine shared so often. “Okay, okay! You’re right. I don’t need much more time.” “Oh, come on.” Mary Catherine leaned forward and crossed her legs. “How long before he’ll ask you to marry him?” “Seriously?” Sami looked shocked. “Let’s not rush things!” “It won’t be long.” Mary Catherine raised her eyebrows. “You heard it from me first.” “You’re crazy.” “But in this case, also right.” Mary Catherine let her silliness fade, let the breeze off the ocean frame the moment, the significance of it. “Was it beautiful? Your date?” “It was. We were at Disneyland, as you know.” She looked so much happier than before, back when she was dating Arnie. “When it was dark he took me to the bridge in front of Sleeping Beauty’s castle.” Sami was sitting cross-legged now, facing Mary Catherine. “He told me he never stopped adoring me, never stopped thinking about me. Even with every bad decision he made back then.” “That’s sweet.” Sami’s smile held a contentment that hadn’t been there in the beginning, back when Tyler first returned to Los Angeles. “He says he has just one regret now. One that still haunts him.” She paused and lifted her face toward the sun for a few seconds before looking back at Mary Catherine. “That he ever left me at all.” The story touched Mary Catherine. She couldn’t be happier for her friend, for the love she’d found. “I want to be maid of honor.” She held up both hands in a teasing surrender. “That’s all I’m saying.” “Seriously, though . . . you could be right.” Again Sami’s joy was tangible. “I love him so much. This new Tyler, the one with lessons learned and a faith that gets stronger every day . . . I just never dreamed we would have a second chance.” “I did.” Mary Catherine gave Sami a knowing look. “Remember?” “True.” Sami’s laugh mixed with the disbelief she still clearly felt. “You told me I couldn’t leave Florida on that business trip, unless I spent a few hours with him.” “Let’s just say I’m a very good friend.” Mary Catherine grinned. “Definitely maid of honor status.” The sun was higher in the sky, temperatures heating up. Mary Catherine allowed the silence again. She needed some kind of buffer before she could tell Sami the truth about her health. The one thing they’d never talked about. She checked her phone. Nearly eleven o’clock. They needed to be at the newly renovated youth center by three that afternoon to help with last-minute details for the grand opening. Finally Mary Catherine shifted on her towel so she was facing Sami. “You ever wonder why I changed my eating habits lately? No more frozen pizza?” Sami’s smile came easily. “The whole no sugar, no gluten, no grain thing?” She uttered a quick laugh. “Because you’re amazing and you like feeling good enough to climb walls and jump out of planes?” She laughed again. “That’s what I always figured. I sure couldn’t eat that clean.” Mary Catherine hated what was coming. She wanted everyone in her world to go on thinking she had switched up her eating because of her zest for life. Nothing more. She hesitated. Finally Sami’s laughter faded. “Isn’t that why?” “No.” Mary Catherine’s smile remained, but she could feel a sadness filling her eyes. “I’m diabetic. Type two.” “What?” Sami put her elbows on her knees and leaned closer. “Since when? How come you never told me?” “I only found out last month, and my eating keeps it under control.” She angled her head, willing her friend to understand. “I don’t like thinking about it. Obviously. And, well, the way I eat I don’t need pills or shots. I check my blood sugar every morning. So far, it’s controlled.” Sami hesitated. “Okay, good. You scared me for a minute.” “There’s more. Diabetes runs in our family.” She paused. “Just like congenital heart defects. My uncle died because of his heart disease when he was in his late twenties. My mom never had any problem, but the gene passed on to me.” Again Sami looked beyond confused. She stared at Mary Catherine. “You’re saying . . . there’s something wrong with your heart?” Mary Catherine took a slow breath. “I was born with a coarctation of the aorta, and a bicuspid aortic valve. I had emergency surgery when I was a few weeks old and since then I get checkups every year.” She forced her smile. “No big deal.” “You should’ve said that first.” Sami looked like she wasn’t sure whether to relax or expect more news. “So . . . you’re okay? Like long-term?” “Not really.” She hadn’t talked about this with anyone. Not even her parents. “I had a checkup last week. My heart’s enlarged—which isn’t good. And my valves are deteriorating. I’ll need a transplant sometime in the next year.” Sami pulled her knees up to her chest and hung her head for several seconds. When she looked up, there was no mistaking the fear in her eyes. “What does that mean?” “The valve transplant isn’t the worst thing. People survive those—though mine will be trickier for a lot of reasons.” Mary Catherine looked to the sky; the California sun filled the morning. “It’s my enlarged heart that’s the real problem. Even with a transplant I may not have more than ten years. Maybe less.” The color left Sami’s face and she simply stared, like she couldn’t begin to believe the news. “That’s . . . awful.” “You’re the only one who knows.” She reached out and gave Sami’s hand a brief squeeze. “You’re my best friend, Sami. I’ve been looking for a way to tell you.” Sami hung her head for a long moment again. When she turned to Mary Catherine, there were tears in her eyes. “There must be something they can do. Your parents know the best doctors, right?” “They do. But this . . . well, you can’t fix an enlarged heart like mine. There are drugs that can slow the process. But that’s about it.” “I can’t believe this.” Sami stared at the sky. A minute passed before she lowered her arms and faced Mary Catherine again. Tears fell down her cheeks. “We have to find another opinion.” “I’ve done that.” She looked straight into Sami’s eyes. “Look, the reason I’m telling you is so you’ll pray. God can do anything—even with this.” Again, she worked to keep discouragement from her voice. “That’s why I care so much about living. Why I’m always talking about only living once. Because I don’t have as long as most people.” Sami wiped her tears with her fingertips. “It’s not fair.” “It is.” Mary Catherine sat up straighter. “God’s given me all these years of life and probably many more. I still have lots to do—like get that youth center up and running tonight. And maybe move to Africa for a year and work with orphans.” “You always say that.” “I’ll do it one of these days.” Mary Catherine found her smile again. “Of course, I’ll probably skydive another dozen times at least, and look.” She turned her face toward the ocean again. “I have mornings like this, with you.” She felt a familiar peace fill her soul. “God has been far more than fair with me.” “Are you in pain? I mean . . . like, does it make your chest hurt?” “Not at all.” She raised her hands and dropped them again. “I feel perfect.” “Good.” Sami looked off, her expression marked with sorrow. “What about love?” “What about it?” Mary Catherine felt her heart sink. Sami stared at her. “You deserve love.” “No.” She shook her head. “I won’t have time.” Mary Catherine felt tears sting her own eyes. “But I’m okay with that.” Sami looked into her eyes again. “You were going to find someone real, remember? Someone like you, with faith like you and a love for life like you.” Sami shook her head. “That was supposed to be the miracle of your life.” She exhaled hard. “I can’t believe this.” “Sami . . . it’s all right.” Mary Catherine put her hand on her friend’s shoulder. “God’s going to give me a different kind of miracle.” She stood and reached out her hand. “Come on. Let’s go find those dolphins.” Sami waited several seconds before she took Mary Catherine’s hand. “Really?” She shaded her eyes so she could see better. “Can you do this? Swimming in the ocean? Is that good for you?” “It’s all good.” She slipped back into her wetsuit and ran a few steps ahead. “The more life in my days, the better. Then it doesn’t matter how many days I have. Just that I really lived them.” “I hate this.” Sami climbed into her wetsuit and caught up to her. “You’re probably supposed to be home resting.” “Never.” Mary Catherine grabbed her boogie board and ran through the surf. Her laughter mixed with the sound of the waves. “God wants me out here.” Sami paddled alongside her. The moment they reached the calm area before the swells, they spotted the dolphins. Three of them, playing in the water a few yards away. “See!” Mary Catherine’s joy was as genuine as the sun on the water. “I don’t want to miss this.” For the first time in many minutes, Sami smiled again. “I don’t know anyone like you, MC.” “I’ll take that as a compliment.” Mary Catherine looked over her shoulder as the perfect wave came straight for them. “Here we go!” And with that they both caught the wave and started to ride it in. The moment they did, Mary Catherine spotted two of the dolphins riding alongside them. “Look!” she shouted. Sami turned her head and saw what was happening just before the dolphins kicked out of the wave and headed back out to sea. “Wow!” “That never happens!” “So beautiful.” Sami was laughing now, too. Mary Catherine turned her attention to the shore as the ride continued. Tears filled her eyes and mixed with salt water and a happiness that knew no limits. The heaviness from earlier was gone. No matter how many years she had or where God would lead her from here, one thing would always be true. As long as she drew breath, she would spend her days living.

I honestly didn't know what to expect from this follow up to Angels Walking. I knew it would be a great book, but I wasn't sure what storyline Karen would take with this book. I was not disappointed! I read it in just a few hours! I could not make myself put it down!!

This book can be appreciated without having read the first one in the series as sufficient back story is given in this one.The story of Marcus and Tyler continues in this novel. Two angels, Jag and Aspyn, are given the assignment to watch over Marcus, an LA Dodger pitcher, and Mary Catherine, roommate of Tyler's girlfriend. Something great will come from a romance between the two, if the angels can pull it off. Mary Catherine has a serious issue that convinces her loving Marcus is not a possibility. The enemy of God sends his demons to thwart the good work Marcus is doing for youth in a dangerous and gang dominated part of the city. The two angels have a great deal of work ahead of them. This novel is a thought provoking one. This is a second chance for Jag. He had been on an assignment ten years ago where he lost a young man to the enemy. We read about his emotions, the rage he has against the gang leaders. I guess I hadn't really thought about angels having a personality that might include the capacity for such strong emotions. One of the hardest things about being an angel, Jag thinks, is having more knowledge and power than humans, but not nearly the knowledge and power of the Father. The angels also speak of their experience on earth, that the earth is so full of pain. This is a very complex assignment for them as there are so many people and events that need to be coordinated for the result to be what God desires. In the course of the novel we are introduced to the horrors of the gangs in Los Angeles. The kids are so young when they get sucked into the gang lifestyle. We also get a peek at prison life. It is not a pretty picture. There are other issues in the book that would make for lively discussion. Why doesn't God prevent senseless harm to innocent people and kids? What is the role of prayer? How and why does God answer prayer? If you were in the beginnings of a potential romance and knew a secret that would devastate the other person, would you keep silent? There is a great discussion guide included, covering these and many more thought provoking issues in the book.At the end of the book, Kingsbury shares her own story of what she is convinced is an angel encounter. Reading that made the novel all the more exciting.I'll be ready for the third book in the series as we are left hanging at the end of this one.Food for thought: “You have only one chance to write the story of your life. Make it a bestseller.”I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

I have been anxiously waiting for this follow up to Angels Walking! Her characters face real life challenges that many of us can relate to. The choices they battle with and the faith they struggle with makes our heart ache for them. You cheer with them, cry with them, laugh with them, feel fear with them, doubt with them and celebrate with them. I LOVE how Karen shows the true struggle of a Christian and doesn't sugar coat experiences that happen to us in life and our reactions to those experiences. I am now waiting on edge for the final book in this series!!!
