The village schoolroom was packed as full as it would hold, and the air was so thick that, as Sylvia said, it could almost be scooped up with a spoon. The lecturer was stout and perspiring freely, but he meant to do his duty at all costs, and he rose to the occasion with tremendous vigour, declaiming in really fine style:

Nearly a century old, yet still a fun read By Joanna M The seven Plumstead siblings, ranging from 19-year-old Nealie to seven-year-old Ducky, have been under the care of various relatives ever since their mother died and their doctor father set off for Australia. Now, the siblings have undertaken the adventure of their lives as they set off from England in the hopes of reuniting the family.Problems abound at every turn, from financial to logistical, from illness to cattle stampedes. Anything and everything that can go wrong seems to, and it all seems to fall upon poor Nealie's shoulders as the eldest.Worst of all, there's the niggling underlying doubt that even when the siblings find Dr. Plumstead in Australia, he might be less than thrilled to see them. After all, they didn't get a confirmation from him before leaving England, and it's been seven years since any of them have seen him or even gotten a letter. What if the children have traveled around the world only to find themselves without a home?Despite having been written nearly a hundred years ago, this story endures the test of time. Modern readers will enjoy the colorful characters, the tight familial bond, and keep rooting for the Plumsteads to end happily.

If you ask most Filipinos, Boracay is always #1 as one of the best destinations in the Philippines to visit and experience. If you take the time to meet local visitors on the island, you may find out that it is their first time to visit there. In the past, many Filipinos could not afford such luxuries and it is still true today for many people who live in the country. In recent years, the Philippines economy has improved tremendously and locals continue to flock there by the droves especially during summer season. I fell in love with the place because locals can't stop talking about how much fun Boracay has to offer and I had an unforgettable experience when I was there.

I find that the information provided by Luckey in his book is very useful for someone travelling for the first time By Navam Pakianathan I live in the Philippines. Boracay is a must go destination for anyone who likes a long white beach with lots of activities. I did a lot of online research before our trip to Boracay. Yet, I find that the information provided by Luckey in his book is very useful for someone travelling for the first time, as otherwise you could easily get overwhelmed or lost.

Adventures come to the adventurous, and mysterious things fall in the way of those who, with wonder and imagination, are on the watch for them; but the majority of people go past the doors that are half ajar, thinking them closed, and fail to notice the faint stirrings of the great curtain that hangs ever in the form of appearances between them and the world of causes behind.

For fans of Ashton Smith, of Machen, and of Lovecraft there's eldritch and otherworldly horror. But beyond that Blackwood's works are unique in their ability to evoke an almost spiritual sense of awe.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. what is sanity? By chrisam This is the main issue of this great collection by Blackwood. One can't be sure whether the weird stuff is really happening or if the trappers are losing their minds in the woods. Four mind-blowing tales by a master of horror.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read on a stormy night when everyone is gone. By Amy Michelle Mosier Okay, I didn't read the first nor the last story (a bit too long for my taste). I did read The Man Who Found Out and The Glamour of the Snow. Both deliver enough spooks to make it worthwhile. The Man Who Found Out is about a mysterious set of tablets and even though this was written like a hundred years ago, it still stands out for being unique in the way it sets the mood and in the unusual and funny way it ends. I was not expecting that ending. The Glamour of the Snow, although the story tells you what is happening, it still is unnerving to think that the main character is just going along with this stranger, not thinking about the possible consequences. Both stories leave a lot of room for your imagination; they are open-ended in their conclusions and while that may not suit everyone, I was impressed.

Dare I say it? Dare I say that I, a plain, prosaic lieutenant in the republican service have done the incredible things here set out for the love of a woman—for a chimera in female shape; for a pale, vapid ghost of woman-loveliness? At times I tell myself I dare not: that you will laugh, and cast me aside as a fabricator; and then again I pick up my pen and collect the scattered pages, for I MUST write it—the pallid splendour of that thing I loved, and won, and lost is ever before me, and will not be forgotten.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A Pioneer Work of Science Fantasy By A Customer Edwin Lester Arnold (1875-1939) was for most of this century more famous for his "Phra thePhoenician" than for "Gulliver Jones," published in London in 1905. The stir over "Gulliver Jones"began over thirty years ago when striking similarities between his work and that of Edgar Rice Burroughs' own Mars series of books (begun in 1911) were finally noticed. It is entirely possible that Burroughs had never heard of Arnold or his book. At any rate, Arnold's work stands as a strange, unsung bridge between the Jules Verne/H.G. Wells style of science fiction of his day and the heroic science fantasy to be found in pulp fiction, comic-strips, and movies later in the twentieth century. The book's central figure is Gulliver Jones, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. Happening upon a flying carpet in New York City, he is whisked away to Mars, which is inhabited by characters very reminiscient of Well's "The Time Machine." He falls in love with the vapid but lovely Princess Heru just in time to see her handed over to the king of the Hither people (who are Haggard-style Africans thinly disguised as Martians). The rest of the novel involves his haphazard rescue of her via a voyage up an icy river of death and beyond. "Lieutenant Gulliver Jones: His Vacation" is a silly, dated book which is must reading for students of science fiction in this century, and for anyone in search of a good yarn.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Before there was John Carter By wiredweird This little story, over a hundred years old now, tells a swashbuckling tale of adventure in a distant and improbable world. Swept away by a magic carpet (!), Lt. Gulliver Jones arrives on Mars. He first lands among pretty lotus-eaters, an indolent society that seems to live for its simple pleasures and complex wines, with a different drug for each kind of bliss the drinker might pursue. Soon, however, he's off on a quest, down the river of death, into sacred temples, and finally into the land of the savages that prey on the gentler folk of this land. Arnold's languge tends toward the archaic - it was written in 1905, after all - and his plots tend to hang on wild coincidence as much as on the unexplained. Still, if you want some silly, glamorous, and chaste adventure, this could be just what you want.If parts of Arnold's story sound familiar, well, they should. Edgar Rice Burroughs lifted parts of the story wholesale, according to Richard Lupoff's preface, for use in his Mars series. In turn, Arnold seems to have imitated the Eloi of H.G. Wells's The Time Machine. This story provides a remarkable link in the chain of ideas that leads from and to better-known works. You don't have to be a literary historian to enjoy this book, though. It stands on its own as a pleasant bit of fantasy fluff.-- wiredweird

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Pioneer Work of Cassic SciFi By Sean Pheonix This novel is the first book I purchased. In 1961 I bought this pulp story from a used book store for a dime. Its cover price was 40 cents. But - it was such a great read that it sold me on SciFi forever. After my introduction to Lieutenant Gulliver Jones (its orignial title) between these covers, I went on to read Heinlein, and then Clark, Asimov and all the other's who came long after Edwin Arnold. The book reads with the all the classic Victorian flavor of Wells and Verne, but it has a real story embedded inside and is far enough removed from the stilted culture of the turn of the 20th century, that it allows even a 21st century reader to suspend belief enough to enjoy the magic of Mars as seen through the eyes of a culture far removed from the Martian desert we now know and can see unfolding before our eyes each day. For the connoisseur of classic SciFi, this is a must to read and appreciate. The old Ace paperback now sits enshrined in a shadow box frame beside my desk.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Loose Ends By Jal I suspect author Pat Noad was a short story writer before she wrote Loose Ends. There are a lot of self-contained episodes in this first novel of the Annie Bryce Mysteries and the author has stitched them together into a credible entertaining novel that starts with a photo from World War Two and surfaces in the present day with whale watchers on Queensland's coast. Loose Ends is a mystery page turner set in sub-tropical Queensland that's easy to read and hard to put down. The dialogue can't be faulted. There's suspense and an underlying threat of danger in Loose Ends. I will definitely read this author's next book.I give Loose Ends five well deserved stars for one of the most enjoyable reads that I have bought from Amazon.

I very much enjoyed the dancing of the storyline even though it left the plot, and kept me figuring and guessing introducing new twists and turns. Loved the way it ended and am looking forward to the next in the series.

When we think of the great strikers in soccer history; players like Messi, Ronaldo, Pele, Maradona etc; the most prominent images convey the moments just before, during, and after a goal is scored. The shooting pose, the striker watching the ball fly past a beaten goalkeeper, the euphoric celebration. But what of the movement, the awareness, the cooperation with teammates, the quick decision making, the guile that led to the goal being scored? Striker play in soccer is an art. It requires an understanding of angles, a sense of timing, an awareness of space, great vision, close ball control and shooting skills, and of course the mysterious "nose for goal". This book explores methods to develop great strikers through specific training routines, including: Shooting and Finishing Exercises Small Sided Games Functional Training and Phase Play Specific Movements and Formations Emphasis on Body Position Awareness Training

Read Ebook Black Whole, by Jashua Sa-Ra

Black Whole is a fluid collection of thoughts distilled into poetic form by Jashua Sa-Ra. It is a cultural healing aid offered to stimulate, encourage, and empower. As suggested by the title, it has an immense gravity that is honed to bring community together. Love (or the lack thereof) is the central theme, spanning inter- and intrapersonal, familial, communal, spiritual, and global relationships. The lyricism is distinct and multi-layered; available to all, but especially engaging for those who read between the lines. Some of the poetry takes you to quiet spaces in serene natural environments, while others explode with the heat of inner city living. The breadth of this work thoroughly documents the travels of a spirit partaking of the human experience.

Mind, body, and Spirit By Harold Gulley Jr. Mind, body, and spirit are all the concern of Booth in his book about the darkness of humanity found on the east side of London and the lack of caring shown by the government as well as the churches of the day (mid 1800's).The sensitivity to the overall needs of man comes out of Booth's love for their soul as well as their body and he does an amazing job of connecting the two. So amazing in fact that there are many establishments of higher learning that still today make it required reading for human service majors.Booth understood back then that there are certain things about the needs of man that could not be changed by government, society, or time itself. It was this realization that caused him to put aside his desire to feed the souls of the needy until he could feed their stomachs. He was quoted once as saying 'they can't hear the gospel over the noise of their growling stomachs' (not an exact quote).Booth had been a minister in the New Methodist Connection church in London but left when they would not allow him to minister to the needy who were so close to his heart. Ultimately he began an organization which he called the Christian Mission, we know it today as The Salvation Army, the most successful and trusted charitable organization in the world. The book is written in the difficult style of old world English authors and may not be the easiest read, but it is well worth it to those who want to better understand both the cause of and the answer to poverty in our world.

He worked as a Methodist lay-preacher in the poverty strikken East End of Londen in the mid-1800's before he founded the Salvation Army in 1865.In this book he explains his views on how a Christian should live and act. Booth believed that people should be helped and not judged. The Salvation Army is still very active in the distribution of humanitarian aid in many countries of the world. In this memoir-like book Booth also writes a lot about the poverty and destitution he saw in the slums of London. He includes some of the stories of people he met to help him explain his points of view on poverty and humanitarian help. He is not only touched by the difficulties of the poor, he also believes that to save the soul of a man you need to seek the salvation of the body ("...I must assert in the most unqualified way that it is primarily and mainly forthe sake of saving the soul that I seek the salvation of the body." [Copied from Chapter 5]).The first edition of this book was printed in 1890.I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in William Booth and the Salvation Army, or in social history of the UK in the 19th century. To give you an idea of the book I will copy two subsections of Chapter 3:[...]Some seven years ago a great outcry was made concerning the Housing ofthe Poor. Much was said, and rightly said--it could not be said toostrongly--concerning the disease-breeding, manhood-destroyingcharacter of many of the tenements in which the poor herd in our largecities. But there is a depth below that of the dweller in the slums. It is that of the dweller in the street, who has not even a lair in theslums which he can call his own. The houseless Out-of-Work is in onerespect at least like Him of whom it was said, "Foxes have holes, andbirds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man hath not where to layHis head."[...](About one of the homeless people Booth met on the street he notes:)No. 8. Slept here four nights running. Is a builder's labourer bytrade, that is, a handy-man. Had a settled job for a few weeks whichexpired three weeks since. Has earned nothing for nine days. Thenhelped wash down a shop front and got 2s. 6d. for it. Does anythinghe can get. Is 46 years old. Earns about 2d. or 3d. a day at horseminding. A cup of tea and a bit of bread yesterday, and same to-day,is all he has had.

Stephen Goode Just having finished experiencing the great London Olympic games in 2012, it is hard to believe that just over a century ago, London was a totally different place. What happened? "In Darkest England and the Way Out," is an awful yet fascinating book (or rather a strategic, audacious plan) by one man and a vision to change a nation of 3 million destitute who were enslaved in the 1890's in darkest England. One tenth of the population at that time. This book grapples with what to do - how to respond to the needs of this "submerged tenth" of the population. One page 24, "Darkest England may be described as consisting broadly of three circles, one within the other. The outer and widest circle is inhabited by the starving and the homeless, but honest Poor. The second by those who live by Vice; and the third and innermost region at the centre is peopled by those who exist by Crime. The whole of the three circles is sodden with Drink. "But this is a book about real people struggling to survive but have come upon even more hard times. Homeless, living on the streets, nowhere to go. The Embankment on the Thames is full of people who have been looking for work during the day, most unsuccessful. This is a picture of a dozen men interviewed at midnight by a Salvation Army officer, No. 4 is an elderly man and visibly starts to shake at the mention of work; "he produces a card carefully wrapped in old newspaper, to the effect that Mr. J.R. is a member of the Trade Protection League. He is a waterside laborer. last job a fortnight ago. has earned nothing for 5 days. Had a bit of bread this morning but not a scrap since. Had a cup of tea and two slices of bread yesterday. Is 50 years old and still damp from sleeping out in the wet last night." People wanting to work but there is none to be found. This first half of the book goes through each of those circles mentioned above and ends up with the question, "Is there no help?" Part two of the book looks at , "What does deliverance look like? and essentials to success "These essentials on pages 85-87 are the principals that the Salvation operated by then and are still valid for today.1. The first essential that must be borne in mind as governing every Scheme ( or plan/project) that may be put forward is that it must change the man when it is in his character and conduct which constitute the reasons for his failure in the battle of life.2. The remedy, to be effectual, must change the circumstances of the individual when they are the cause of his wretched condition, and lie beyond his control.3. Any remedy worthy of consideration must be on a scale commensurate with the evil which it proposes to deal.4. Not only must the Scheme (Plan or Project) be large enough, but it must be permanent.5. But while it must be permanent, it must be immediately practical.6. The indirect features of the Scheme must not be such as to produce injury to the person we seek to benefit.7. While assisting one class of the community, it must not seriously interfere with the interests of another. This strategic plan affected all of England and makes shows us why the Salvation Army today is one of the most impacting organizations on the planet.

The islanders still tell rumors of treasures hidden by the likes of Morgan, Catt, and Blackbeard in underground caves that penetrate the porous sedimentary rocks of the Bahamas, not even accessible to the most daring spelunkers and cave divers. Eventually the pirates were killed themselves, beheaded, or hanged and the treasures buried forever. Leisurely floating without gravity along a tropical reef, Volkhardt Knappensuhl gets pulled into a blue hole. A tidal current flushes him into an underground tunnel. This story describes his miraculous survival in an underground cave system where he makes a mysterious discovery. The romantic sailing story becomes a deadly fight with gangsters and governments until luck and powerful friendships save his life and one of the largest treasures ever found.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sailing Caribbean By Peter H. I enjoyed the sailing part in the Caribbean, but when the lone sailor dives into the underworld and survives with luck, a dramatic story escalates into a fight over the treasure that captured me through a night. The historic flash back at a sea battle with pirates is interesting to read. Having sailed the Bahamas myself I could picture the battle, I have seen the caves, and seen the dark side of Nassau.I would rate this book as a classic at the top of all sailing literature.
