The Bride of Lammermoor is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott, published in 1819. The novel is set in the Lammermuir Hills of south-east Scotland, and tells of a tragic love affair between young Lucy Ashton and her family's enemy Edgar Ravenswood. Scott indicated the plot was based on an actual incident. The Bride of Lammermoor and A Legend of Montrose were published together as the third of Scott's Tales of My Landlord series. As with all the Waverley Novels, The Bride of Lammermuir was published anonymously. The novel claims that the story was an oral tradition, collected by one "Peter Pattieson", and subsequently published by "Jedediah Cleishbotham". The 1830 "Waverley edition" includes an introduction by Scott, discussing his actual sources. The later edition also changes the date of the events: the first edition sets the story in the 17th century; the 1830 edition sets it in the reign of Queen Anne, after the 1707 Acts of Union which joined Scotland and England. The story is the basis for Donizetti's 1835 opera Lucia di Lammermoor.

Gothic chills and local flavour By Eva Mann A rather weird novel that does not lack local flavour and even comical characters is the result of Scott's excursion into gothic style of writing. The atmosphere of the novel is perfectly eerie. Falling down residences, a mad old woman, the shadow of death on Lammermoor from the beginning. A feud between to families in which the Ashtons, have taken over all the possessions of the Ravenswoods, forces Edgar, the only offspring of that ill-fated house, to live in the decaying Wolf's Crag. A grim prophecy foretells his end, if he ever should ride to Ravenswood (now inhabited by the Ashton's, among others the gentle Lucy). And, last but not least, he himself senses that he will never by happy. It is no surprise that the dreamer Lucy falls in love with this dark hero after he has saved her and her father from an angry bull. It is clear from the very beginning that this love can only end in despair, madness and death. Which is, in my opinion, not a flaw of the book, but one of the things that make it special. - Even Lucy and Edgar must know that their love will never come to a good end, but yet they follow the path of their destiny; they can not help themselves. It is that sense of doom that makes the instants at the fountain so precious and moving, or the moment where the lightening illuminates the profiles of the lovers in Edgar's derelict castle. The characters try to act, but in one way or the other are manipulated by Lady Ashton. She IS fate, or much more nemesis. Her "victims" don't have a chance. But the book has more to offer than just a tale of stark tragedy. Scott draws vivid pictures of his characters, for example Caleb (Edgar's faithful old servant) - and plays with the his rough humour against the sombre background. Or the strange people of the village and the weird women in the graveyard who must have been characteristic for rural Scotland in Scott's day. All in all it is a capturing book one is not likely to forget so soon.

His influence on 19th century literature was immense. What's more, he still offers good reading. You might not know it from the typical undergraduate British literature survey text, though, where he is likely to be neglected in favor of writers more fashionable today.I had to read Scott on my own -- fired by the enthusiasm of C. S. Lewis, whose essay on Scott in SELECTED LITERARY ESSAYS is warmly recommended. The first one I read, Kenilworth, wasn't all that good. Better were The Antiquary, Redgauntlet, Rob Roy, The Heart of Midlothian, and Waverley. This novel, The Bride of Lammermoor, is a good one to start with -- being not as long as many of his masterpieces. I suggest the first-time reader skip to the second chapter and start there. Be independent! Find out for yourself why your great-great-great grandparents loved this guy. If you like a warm-hearted storyteller, you should look into Sir Walter.

As the brightest theatre star of the 1840s-1850s, she starred in a stage version of "The Bride of Lammermoor." In addition to the opera, there were two stage adaptations of Scott's novel. I haven't been able to locate either of the stage versions, but I did check out Scott's book to read the story. This is a tale that keeps your interest throughout. I found the Scottish dialect a bit hard to wade through although I "ken" understand it for the most part. Oddly, the first chapter starts with the tale of Dick Tinto who apparently relates this story to our narrator. Tinto is referred to in one other place in the novel. However, his story appears attached and unrelated to what comes after. The tale of Lord Ravenswood and the demise of his family's fortune is an interesting one. Lucy Ashton's attachment to him happens quickly and seems as if it were enchanted. Alice, the old blind woman who foretells the lovers' fate, is a rich and vibrant character. The servant Caleb is hilarious as he manufactures excuses why the best food and accommodations cannot be given to Ravenswood's guests, even to the point of breaking empty bottles as he enters a room and then using that as an excuse for not having wine to serve. Lady Ashton seems to be more controlling than alert, missing all of the signals of her daughter's mental state nor particularly caring about them. The story's outworking after the wedding with Ravenswood's disappearance into the mist is likewise strange, with both he and his horse forever gone. I enjoyed this book, its gothic castles, the hunt, the commonfolk and the political alliances. The novel written in 1819 holds up remarkably well 188 years later. Scott paces the unfolding of the adventure well, keeping the reader wanting to reach for one more chapter to uncover the next incident. While we never stop rooting for the lovers, we know that love's course never did run smooth! Enjoy!

BADASS AND TIMELESS, TURNER’S ‘RAGGED GOD’ WALKS TALL By dan With remarkable imagery, sly humor and a sensual rhythm, Dan Turner expresses strong, epic truths about a world glowing with vigorous wonder.Turner’s newest volume, “A Ragged God: Poems and Reflections” (The Apocryphile Press, $14), is a faultless collection of prose and verse about You Know Who, loved ones, the beholder’s eye and — arguably the most badass chapter — “Justice.”A former Dominican priest who trained probation officers for Chicago’s juvenile courts, Turner is like a globetrotting guide who introduces readers to the rarest of less-traveled paths — like the mountains of Nicaragua where mothers mourn their children's brutal, senseless murders at the hands of the Contras; or a wild, sweltering Cambodian jungle where one can hear God’s grief-stricken moans.Turner also sings about pure celebration. His vivid descriptions almost make you feel like you’re watching a bittersweet Rob Reiner movie — whether recalling his father confronting an old-fart neighbor who maliciously sets fire to Dan’s prairie playground; or realizing that the act of stringing together words for his beloved sisters is more valuable than jewelry.Timeless — and without BS — Turner’s “A Ragged God” is a volume that walks tall and resonates long after.

His book “Numbers Don’t Lie: Detroit Tigers, Knobler recounts the stories behind the numbers about such historic ballplayers in Detroit such as Ty Cobb, Hank Greenburg, Al Kaline and Denny McClain. It’s a great read for any baseball enthusiast even if you’re not from Detroit or are a Tigers fan. Highly recommended. I spoke with Danny Knobler about the book. By Jon Spoelstra If you're really a Tiger fan, I don't know how you could go through life without reading Numbers Don't Lie. Each chapter is short--about the length of a newspaper column--so I read a story a day, looking forward to the next day until, alas, I finished the book. Wow, the book brought back so many great memories.

Tripping On Oregon's Treasures: One Woman's Van Camping Trips Amid Oregon's Scenic Wonders (Tripping On a Shoestring Book 2), by Vernelle Judy

About the Author The valley I was raised in is located in the Umpqua watershed of the Coast Range in Oregon. The ground is so fertile if you plant a garden you will need to run or it will swallow you! Along with that, game was so abundant we actually had two fawns live with us when I was a child. My family took two trips to town each year to purchase staples like flour, sugar and coffee. The valley was home to numerous Myrtle trees. I can still smell the 'Vicks' fragrance as the sun warmed their evergreen leaves. In spring the aromatic pennyroyal was so prolific the whole valley rang out its presents. Since our school was small--about twenty children--we all played together. If we wanted a game of baseball work-up it took the whole student body! My childhood home was heated with wood stoves, one in the living room and one in the kitchen for cooking. At night we had kerosene lanterns to stave off the darkness but we usually went to bed when darkness fell. My mother canned all summer and into the autumn. Neighbors had dairy cows that supplied our milk. Free-range chickens had the run of our yard and paid us daily with eggs as well as the wonderful clucking sounds they made as they went about scratching here and there while keeping track of their little chicks. Family outings centered around work. At the time, I didn't know it was work. I thought a day at the berry patch or an evening in the hills gathering a trailer load of firewood was great fun. After all, Mom and Dad, my sister and brother and I were all there working together. It felt like the best time a person could have. Maybe that's why I enjoy work to this day. I come by my ability to put this book and my first book, "Tripping On a Shoestring" together due to my family history as much as by any life experiences I've had after reaching adulthood. Those early lessons are the foundation of my life.

A Charming Lesson on the Values of Hard Work By Darien Summers Paddy the Beaver is an eager work-a-holic who sets to the task of building a dam and a new home. In one way after another (I don't want to spoil the book) he conquers all these hindrances, has a happy ending and leaves the readers of his tale with rich morals on the values of working hard and using their heads.Broken up into short chapters, this book is perfect to read aloud to children as a bed time story in easy to read and comprehend installments. Older children (9 or above) will have fun enjoying this book by reading it themselves.Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book. The Mischievous Hare

I purchased them as a gift for her family to share and they love them. I've read some of the stories at night to my children - 3, 6 and 7. They enjoy the stories. My 7 year old has read some but it may be more appropriate for an older reader. Some of the antics take place over several short chapters and need to be summarized so the kids can follow - for example, one animal tricks another animal into going into a barrel lying on its side at the top of a hill (can you see a problem!). The barrel rolls down the hill and the animal looks out and sees another animal who gets the blame. Overall, fun for kids and grownups (MUCH better than Junie B. Jones!)

This book is not designed to break down in detail Barcelona’s formations and tactics. It is not an in depth tactical analysis of each player’s role and responsibilities in the Barcelona system of play either. The focus of this book is to provide you with training ground exercises direct from FC Barcelona. The exercises focus on the major principles and concepts that Barcelona embrace as an entire club. Each exercise directly relates to the “Barcelona Training Model” that fits directly into the “Barcelona Game Model”. The exercises in the book cover the four phases of the game: attacking transition, attacking organization, defensive transition and defensive organization. FC Barcelona is famous for their total commitment to play their style of soccer with all their teams from U8 all the way up to the first team. Many people refer to the Barcelona style of play as “Tiki Taka”. The “Tiki Taka” possession style of soccer Barcelona plays requires years and years of training. Players must be technically gifted with a complete understanding of the “Barca” system. In the simplest of explanations Barcelona’s former Coach Pep Guardiola explains the Barcelona style of play as, “This is a game of 11v11 with one ball and we try to keep this ball, we try to play with this ball”. Guardiola is basically saying that at Barcelona ball possession and ball circulation is of the highest importance. The players are trained to pass the ball and keep the ball under intense pressure from the opposing team. While in possession supporting players form triangles and diamonds to support the player with the ball (provides multiple passing options). FC Barcelona has proven that their method works and works very well. Just look in their trophy cabinet! They have won the treble twice in the last ten years along with 7 La Liga titles in 10 years! The exercises in this book will have your team training like Barcelona and through time playing like Barcelona (training model = game model).

"[...]us, and we shall never obtain anything more favorable so long as the principles of the navigation act are obstinately adhered to by Great Britain. This system is so much a favorite with the nation that no minister would dare to depart from it. Indeed, I have no idea we shall ever obtain, by compact, a better footing for our commerce with this country than that on which it now stands; and therefore the shortness of time, limited for the operation of this part of the compact, is, I think, beneficial to us." By Rebecca Anne Banks Byline: The Book Reviewer (www.thebookreviewer.ca)Title of Book: Memoirs of John Quincy AdamsAuthor: Josiah QuincyNarrator: R. Keith MilesPublisher: Legacy Audio Books, Inc.Date of Publication: 2015Time: 16 hours and 5 minutes“Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,In full glory reflected, now shines on the stream:'Tis the star-spangled banner: O, long may it waveO'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!”- from The Star Spangled Banner, music by Francis Scott Key(N.B.: the song was written after the lawyer/composer witnessed thebombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814, when over “the American flag wasstill flying.” It was a popular song during the War of 1812, laterto become the National Anthem.)Memoirs of John Quincy Adams is a biography of the sixth President of the United States, giving life to the history of the times, the people and events and is considered culturally important. The biography is rich because it gives an intimate portrait of the upstanding personality of John Quincy Adams, all the leading politicians, the people he knew in foreign service as a diplomat and describes the events and motivations behind American domestic as well as foreign policy in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. In the background is the French Revolution, the war between France and the United Kingdom and the War of 1812 between America and the United Kingdom. This Writer found the AudioBook fascinating, like a walk into history through a time machine. Firstly, noting the morphing of language since the late 1700’s, the very buffered and formal use of English with a more upright cadence, suggesting layers and layers of clothing, the very full dresses of the women in this time period, often needing the help of someone else, usually a servant, to dress. An example of language, in the words of John Quincy Adams “If there is a Bostonian who ever sailed from his own harbor for distant lands, or returned to it from them, without feelings, at the sight of the Blue Hills, which he is unable to express, his heart is differently constituted from mine."The narration of R. Keith Miles captures the imagination with the perfect portrayal of an American upperclassman. Falling into the storyline, the events and personalities unfold like watching a movie, the drama of motivations and circumstances flower into life. For example upon the election of John Quincy Adams and his appointment of Henry Clay as Secretary of State, General Andrew Jackson, an electoral candidate, was dismayed and brewing storms.“Mr. Adams, being informed that it was Mr. Clay's intention to issue another pamphlet in refutation of the charge of bargaining and corruption, which General Jackson and his partisans under his authority had brought against them both, remarked: "They have been already amply refuted; but, in the excitement of contested elections, and of party spirit, judgment becomes the slave of the will. Men of intelligence, talent, and even of integrity upon other occasions, surrender themselves to their passions, believe anything, with and without, and even against evidence, according as it suits their own wishes."Secondly, I noticed the difference in the social economy, the biography takes place in the last of the 18th century just before the Industrial Revolution. Between countries all goods and a majority of travel occurs by wooden sailing ships. The main events of the War of 1812 occur on the open seas with blockades and searches, the impeding of commerce and using artillery. The events of this era set the stage for the Industrial Revolution and the rise of everyman with the change of government structure from monarchies to constitutional governments. America was in formation acquiring the southern territories. The seeds were sewn for freedom, with the beginnings of the debate over the freeing of slaves and the abolitionists (supported by John Quincy Adams), which eventually lead to the American Civil War (1861-1865).John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) a lawyer, diplomat, politician, professor and a man of letters, studies Latin, German, French, Greek and astronomy, reads the Bible, is an avid reader and became the President of the United States (1825-1829). His father, John Adams, was a diplomat in Europe before becoming President of the United States and John Quincy Adams travelled and studied in Europe as a child to eventually follow in his footsteps. He is a man of upstanding character and intellect, named after his great-grandfather John Quincy. "My great-grandfather, John Quincy, [2] was dying when I was baptized, and his daughter, my grandmother, requested I might receive his name. This fact, recorded by my father at the time, is not without a moral to my heart, and has connected with that portion of my name a charm of mingled sensibility and devotion. It was filial tenderness that gave the name—it was the name of one passing from earth to immortality. These have been, through life, perpetual admonitions to do nothing unworthy of it."Writing as Marcellus in the local Boston newspaper he is for neutrality with European strife. "For if," he wrote, "as the poet, with more than poetical truth, has said, 'war is murder,' the plunder of private property, the pillage of all the regular rewards of honest industry and laudable enterprise, upon the mere pretence of a national contest, in the eye of justice can appear in no other light than highway robbery.”In the lavish court of Emperor Alexander of Russia he resists the highlife. “The whole of my life has been one continued experience of the difficulty of a man's adhering to the principle of living within his income; the first and most important principle of private economy. In this country beyond all others, and in my situation more than any other, the temptations to expense amount almost to compulsion. I have withstood them hitherto, and hope for firmness of character to withstand them in future."He is a man of God, “Religion was also in his mind a predominating element. A practice, which he prescribed to himself, and never omitted, of reading daily five chapters in the Bible, familiarized his mind with its pages. In connection with these studies he read habitually the works of Butler, Bossuet, Tillotson, Massillon, Atterbury, and Watts.”Upon being appointed Secretary of State to President Monroe he states “My business is to serve the public to the best of my abilities in the station assigned to me, and not to intrigue for my own advancement.”Mr. Adams is an abolitionist who did not agree with slavery. "The condition of master and slave is," he considered, "by the laws of nature and of God, a state of perpetual, inextinguishable war.”It was a time of change from the way of the Indian peoples in the United States and there had been trouble with the Creeks and Cherokee Indians in the state of Georgia. “My own opinion is that the most benevolent course towards them would be to give them the rights and subject them to the duties of citizens, as a part of our own people. But even this the people of the states within which they are situated would not permit."Memoirs of John Quincy Adams is fascinating, rich in historical detail, the raizing of the ship the Chesepeake leading to an embargo and war with the U.K., the formation of the Monroe Doctrine, the election of President Monroe, the election of President John Quincy Adams, the election of President Andrew Jackson, the voting in Congress, the negotiating of key treaties by Mr. Adams all bring American history to life. An exciting historical treatise and in his own words, based on Mr. Adams letters, writings and conversations, time travel into American history with Memoirs of John Quincy Adams and Legacy AudioBooks.

What Did John Adams Do By Phyllis This was an interesting book about a man who was more influential in American history than text books picture him.Without his knowledge and insights politics and our government would be different. In some ways it is proof that theMore things change, the more they stay the same.

You could call this a tour-de force - an excellent story that held away throughout -

- Lee Maynard Screaming with the Cannibals, Pale light of Sunset Crum, Cinco Becknell.

The mixed verse and prose is called prosimetrum. It is found in Indo-European literature from ancient Sanskrit on. Irish medieval stories mix verse and prose with poetry interspersed in the prose narrative. Tolkien used it. Now this writer tries his hand at it- successfully I think. T.S. Pelzel- Critic

Young men in most cultures have some kind of rite of passage. The Maasai tribe of Africa, in generations past, had to stalk and kill a lion with only a spear before they were considered warriors. In another part of the world, in the Vanuatu tradition, a male teen jumps from a high place with only vines attached to his ankles. The goal is to brush his head on the ground without breaking his neck. If he survives he is considered a man.

Tiki Morton's rite of passage was achieved as teen deep in the coal mines of West Virginia. But now, a few years later, he was looking for adventure. Wayne Black was just along for the ride trying to find himself in the bottom of a bottle. And the great Pierre la Rue? He'd been a man for a long time, he thought.

This is the true story of three 'good ol boys' from West Virginia who come face with to face with adversity in the Gulf of Mexico and ultimately face to face with themselves. They weren't looking for their rite of passage- they were just trying to survive.

Back on Course By RICHARD TOWNSEND JR I guess there might be such a thing as reading a book too fast, and if there is then so is the case with Shell Point. I'm a sailor, and I love sailing adventure books. No disappointment here! I'll go over it again to reinforce some of the finer points - boat description and geography - as I said I read it too fast - it's a page-turner!Shell Point

In the dusk of the old-fashioned best room of a farm-house, in the faint glow of the buried sun through the sods of his July grave, sat two elderly persons, dimly visible, breathing the odor which roses unseen sent through the twilight and open window. One of the two was scarcely conscious of the odor, for she did not believe in roses; she believed mainly in mahogany, linen, and hams; to the other it brought too much sadness to be welcomed, for it seemed, like the sunlight, to issue from the grave of his vanished youth. He was not by nature a sad man; he was only one that had found the past more delightful than the present, and had not left his first loves.

By Stephen Grenier This story starts when Walter Colman, the protagonist, is a young man "possessed with the idea...that he is a most precious specimen of pure and honorable humanity." Seeking employment away from the farm, he pursues the literary life as a book reviewer in London. He comes to realize firsthand the damaging effects of a life of self-deception and lack of complete candor. Through disappointment and hardship he matures, but in the process is required to return deathly ill to his father back on the farm. The portrayal of his father's love is quite moving.Walter hasn't been a true prodigal, but his lack of self-awareness and the understanding of others has led to difficult times. By the end he has walked into the fullness of God's truth and calling. He is helped in a sweet way by his distant cousin and comes to realize his deep love for her. MacDonald portrays her as a strong and noble woman, full of virtue and love for Walter. This story is not, in my view, one of MacDonald's first tier works but is still rich with Godly wisdom. I deducted 1 star because he devotes a small amount of time to the telling of ghost stories, which seems to add nothing to the book. One could even say it's a distraction and seems out of place. I skimmed over that portion.I recommend the book. It is relatively short. Thank you Amazon for making it available.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A MacDonald Novella By L. Braun The title gives away the ending of this XXXII chapter novel. Walter Colman, son of a gentleman farmer, has aspirations of becoming a poet, and so his father sends him to London where the young man can attempt to launch his career. While he's there, he gets caught up in a circle of people who cause him to rethink his life and eventually return home. Because it's a short story, it contains fewer of MacDonald's sermons than usual, and because the story takes place in England, there's no highland dialect.

3 of 7 people found the following review helpful. George MacDonald's "Home Again" By Barbara Amell This is an inexpensive paperback edition of an important book. However there are some typing errors in the text; there is no identified publisher; and the title page states "Home Again"/ "The Elect Lady"--implying there are two George MacDonald novels in the volume instead of only one.

Seated at Life's Dining Table, with the Menu of Morals before you, your eye wanders a bit over the entrees, the hors d'oeuvres, and the things a la, though you know that Roast Beef, Medium, is safe, and sane, and sure. It agrees with you. As you hesitate there sounds in your ear a soft and insinuating Voice.

Review A brave, fun-loving, human book, the best that Miss Ferber has yet given us. -- New York Times

From the Back Cover The critics of her day called her the greatest American woman novelist, and one, in 1918, called her character Emma McChesney "one of the cheeriest, truest, and most helpful characters given to American readers in recent years."

Edna Ferber rose to fame, in fact, on her short stories about the adventures of Emma, a sophisticated traveling underwear saleswoman about whom the phrase "one smart cookie" might have been coined.

This 1913 collection of some of those tales is an excellent introduction to Emma, and to Ferber, whose vivid prose and sharply realized characters continue to make her work among the most enjoyable in American literature.

Ferber's piercing perspective offers a keen insight on the foibles of American society, and finds the undercurrents of hypocrisy and frivolity with intelligence and humor.

It was published before women could even vote but it's a smart story of the adventures of a woman who travels the country by train as a skirt saleswoman. I think any woman can identify with Emma as she struggles to make a life for herself and her son, Jock. I had no idea that Edna Ferber won a Pulitzer and also wrote Showboat and Giant. Remarkable woman who created remarkable characters.

Smith I bought this reprint because of the James Montgomery Flagg illustrations, but I enjoyed the story a great deal. Emma is a "drummer" in her mid-30s, an agent to retail stores throughout the Midwest of the T. A. Buck Featherloom Petticoat Company. She's a woman in what was, before the Great War, decidedly a man's world, but she beats most of them at it all hollow. She's claimed to be the first businesswoman in American literature and she serves as a mouthpiece for Ferber's feminist politics and her Progressive attitude toward the commercial world. This was the first of three collections (all made up of stories serialized in magazines) and they were immensely popular in their day -- especially with women, though Theodore Roosevelt was a fan. too. In fact, Emma was Ferber's first real hit and paved the way for her prolific later career. The style, of course, tends somewhat to effusive overwriting, but you get the same in almost any popular literature written at the turn of the century. Good stuff!

I think it is well-written and suggest that it may even be important. I have lots to read on my kindle, but it is what I am reading!
