The author refers to this particular book of poetry as writing from, "the other side" of her, "pen". She thinks of this collection as something similar to an unruly laiason, and while she considers her other works of poetry to be her "Mozarts", she sees this one as her "Beethoven".         Normally, things that run around don't "bloom" and things that "bloom" can't run around. But aren't we all like this, at the end of the day? We all run around in this world, while we bloom at the same time (or at least we try to).         Expect a departure from the sculpture-like poetry that the author is already known for and be prepared to read what sounds like pages torn out of a weathered and worn diary of a woman who runs around in this world, and blooms wherever and whenever she can.

This book starts out listening for bees, and hears none, the listener being something of a pupa in a cocoon on the early pages. Honeycombs begin not as sources of Swiftian sweetness and light, but sloughs of despond. Honeybees themselves, initially silent, burn like fire at the stake. The hive is the shadow of death, full of sand fleas that stand in for the desiderated insects, along with "scrubitch" mites, Hercules caterpillars and flies: electro-kinetic pellets flecking / blank walls. The planet and its atmosphere, thus un-beed, become a single organism whose surface swarms with flotsam, jetsam and scabs reincarnating as silverfish. Earth's innards comprise more non-beehives that pullulate instead with arachnids and microbes and single cells that Vincenz eventually nurtures to dinosaurhood. We get former human cultures who made hive-like arrangements: ...the Cucuteni-who incinerated their own homes before wandering on...Bajau Laut tribes of Semporna who built their homes on coral reefs in the ocean. And that settled ocean, as always in Vincenz, is near. It's the opposed cosmos, again not a social insect world, but buzzing with fish, not in shoals, not in pods, but singularly alone like us. However, complete solitude is not our lot, because the seashore is inhabited by a remarkable figure: beachcombing Ivan in his ragged rope belt. He recurs throughout Becoming the Sound of Bees, making sense, or nonsense, of everything: screaming blue at the sea, braving the heavy metals of that other social creature, the bedded oyster, his eyes watering as he surveys the city's polluted human hive. This new book by Marc Vincenz, through sheer dint of numberless invention, hums louder and more beautifully than any of our world's collapsing colonies. Tom Bradley

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. "a fractured cinematic narrative ..." By Matt Hill An amalgam of mythopoetic fragments woven into a narrative thread, Becoming the Sound of Bees assembles time in a triage of moments via the life of a shell-shocked wayfarer named Ivan. The individual poems here are integral parts comprising a narrated synergy that strives to recombine and recover Ivan’s personal gestalt: “It is a fractured cinematic narrative where scenes saturate one another and characters shift and exchange faces, some of which are our own” (Jake Berry).Ivan is the Everyman, even as he is a protagonist with no heroics attached. The Everyman character in the text is shadowed by the narrator/commentator, allowing us to break through the fourth wall, that semi-porous membrane that covers our shared meldings with Ivan. The voice is omnipresent in this story, which also allows us as readers to project ourselves into Ivan’s wounded core; into the evocative imagery of these beach scenes; and most certainly, into his process of transmorphing himself while he uses his pain as the fuel to keep going in this shattered world of his.We too are mythology … to live again transmorphed. One wonders if Ivan might be a former academic, one who has experienced some form of life-shattering breakdown. Has he lost a child named Max? Has his wife also died? Or both, through some vicissitude of fate? He apparently no longer makes sense as he wanders through the dystopian scapes of his life on the beach, acquiring the detritus offered up by the oceanic tides. His prowess in the art of beachcombing, however, is immense and all-consuming.Living in a ramshackle bivouac above a slough, composed and held together by civilization’s washed up debris, his is a cobbled-together beachcomber’s shack where he boils seawater for stews of invertebrates and kelp. He has chosen this spot on the bluff above the beach for access to the tides and what gets brought forth nightly. In a parallel way, his own personal tide coalesces with the oceanic tide, that giver of flotsam, existential knickknacks, and ephemeral trash.Ivan, King of the Seaweeds, this exile from civilization, has become a bottle cap hoarder, nailing them to the south wall of his shack with any rusty sharp thing he can find. “Twist the Cap” has become his mantra. He is Ivan the Geomancer, pursuing auguries through this mythopoetic journey by the sea, drinking a psychotropic broth from a plastic bucket, which sources his hallucinatory episodes while a grey thrush chirps out fresh bird language as Ivan mimics its song. He and his commentator traipse up and down the beach, observing “the curious cacti on the hills,” Ivan soldiering his way on through his presumed PTSD hours, stumbling forth like one of Cormac McCarthy’s traumatized characters. Malcolm Lowry, another famous beachcomber, who sheltered up in a seaside bivouac in British Columbia, exiled from a world too wounding to live in, also comes to mind here.Yet, given all this, we still want to know who this Ivan really is, this hoarder of memories, akin to Beckett’s Molloy perhaps, that outcast who hoards his sucking stones in a lonely sea cave. Ivan the beachcomber, with a loose rope belt such that he has to keep hitching up his odoriferous threadbare trousers, screams “blue at the sea” -- “I’m the You!” he yells as he angles with his makeshift spear. He is a recorder of “illusions and smoke-knowledge,” indicating that “smoke is our umbilical cord … to the dark deities.” Perhaps through his scribbled metaphors, a possible redemption/salvation is being generated while he traipses across the silent desolate sands. Also, referencing any possible absence of bees, apparently it is now us doing the buzzing. Yet how do we become, or even incorporate, the sound of the bees? Especially the buzzing sound, as defined in the word bombinate: to rumble, buzz, hum, or produce a low boom. The continuous sound of the surf that Ivan absorbs with each daily cycle may echo the symbolic sound of the bombination of bees. Or internally, there is the systole/diastole oscillation of this pulsing life, the sound of the blood as it expands and contracts through his cranium. Through this process of transmorphing that Vincenz alludes to throughout this text, perhaps this gives us a clue about the imminent peril that we as residents of earth now find ourselves in.While in the pregnant silences heard at noon, that is the noon that until recently was endowed with the low hum of apian industry, this quiet may fill the entirety of our empty days ahead. And yet this narrative, as loaded as it is with the metaphorical associations of hope, warns us about more than the demise of bees. Through poetic language that goes kaleidoscopic in Becoming The Sound Of Bees, we are given a sketch of what our future might become, whether we choose to heed it or not.Certainly the exuberant forces exhibited by Vincenz’s imagination, erupting forth like Pele’s magma flowing into the Hawaiian seas, is palpably apparent in these poems, an igneous fluidity that depicts a human tragedy through the existential aftermath of coping with traumatic loss. One thinks of Berryman’s Henry, another soul who has suffered an irreversible loss like Ivan, proceeding through the minefields of self-alienation and depression. As one reads through these poems, it is striking how Vincenz has this great gift for working his language into such evocative imagery, his penchant for the scholarly blending with the quotidian, driving the transformative thematics throughout these poems. This book serves to remind us that breakdowns in our consciousness can also serve as breakthroughs; we will prevail only with the integrity of our fellow apian creatures if we do not succumb to despair, and proceed with hope and desire towards interpersonal wholeness.

The Black Sox Scandal is a cold case, not a closed case. When Eliot Asinof wrote his classic history about the fixing of the 1919 World Series, Eight Men Out, he told a dramatic story of undereducated and underpaid Chicago White Sox ballplayers, disgruntled by their low pay and poor treatment by team management, who fell prey to the wiles of double-crossing big-city gamblers offering them bribes to lose the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. Shoeless Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, Eddie Cicotte, and the other Black Sox players were all banned from organized baseball for life. But the real story is a lot more complex. We now have access to crucial information that changes what we thought we knew about “baseball’s darkest hour” — including rare film footage from that fateful fall classic, legal documents from the criminal and civil court proceedings, and accurate salary information for major-league players and teams. All of these new pieces to the Black Sox puzzle provide definitive answers to some old mysteries and raise other questions in their place. However, the Black Sox Scandal isn’t the only story worth telling about the 1919 Chicago White Sox. The team roster included three future Hall of Famers, a 20-year-old spitballer who would go on to win 300 games in the minor leagues, and even a batboy who later became a celebrity with the “Murderers’ Row” New York Yankees in the 1920s. All of their stories are included in Scandal on the South Side, which has full-life biographies on each of the 31 players who made an appearance for the White Sox in 1919, plus a comprehensive recap of Chicago’s pennant-winning season, the tainted World Series, and the sordid aftermath. This book isn’t a rewriting of Eight Men Out, but it is the complete story of everyone associated with the 1919 Chicago White Sox. The Society for American Baseball Research invites you to learn more about the Black Sox Scandal and the infamous team at the center of it all.

By WAYNE B TIETZ This book basically is a repeat of most of the other Black Sox books that have been previously released. Other than the listing of the actual salaries of the players in 1919, there is nothing new in this book. It doesn't appear as if there was any serious research done either. White Sox historian Richard Lindberg wrote in one of his White Sox history books that Lefty Williams (one of the 8 Black Sox) was throwing games when he was pitching in the Pacific Coast League before he was a member of the White Sox. That isn't even mentioned here. If you're new to the Black Sox scandal this is probably a book you would like. If you've read other books on the subject this book is not worth your time.

I cant say enough about this book and it is a must have for students and fans of the game. A real behind the scenes look at a dark time in baseball's history. I would recommend this to my friends and will probably read it at least one more time, great job and kudos to all involved!!!!!

Jabberwocky, by Lewis Carroll

From Publishers Weekly This slick version of the classic nonsense poem from Through the Looking Glass seems more a Disney souvenir than a book to snuggle up with. Angular textural sketches, apparently rough drafts for an animated feature (many possess a Fantasia -like sensibility), are set against an overpowering black background that negates the tale's playfulness. Multiple frames on several pages make the (rather feeble) scenario difficult to follow, while the fabled, fearsome beast is here only silly--with its beaky, birdish head atop a caterpillary cover, it resembles a Chinese New Year parade's dragon or a Mardi Gras costume. When the victorious hero goes "galumphing back" with only the Jabberwock's head, youngsters may not realize that the weird animal is actually slain. Overall, this repackaging appears devoid of personality, and doesn't do justice to the comical original. These mome raths and mimsy borogroves deserve better. All ages. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 2-- This edition of Lewis Carroll's classic poem joins several other single-volume versions and editions of Through the Looking Glass currently in print. The jazzy full-color cartoons from the Disney archives are clearly stills from animated sequences and, as a result, seem wooden when placed in a linear, picture-book format. However, the language--brilligs, vorpal swords, and all--is so evocative that illustrations always seem superfluous. It remains a poem to hear and ponder--nonsense words defy the definitions that illustration (and animation) attempt to provide. --Kathleen Whalin, Belfast Public Library, MECopyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist *Starred Review* K-Gr. 2. Illustrating the works of Lewis Carroll has to be one of the most exacting and dangerous tasks in all of bookdom, but Joel Stewart's version succeeds very well, indeed; his imagery suggests the time period in which "Jabberwocky" was written and his illustrations have the manic fluidity of Carroll's own accomplished art. What distinguishes this version is the fact that Stewart has allowed himself to create his own bizarrely funny world. This "Jabberwocky" takes place in a distinct, idiosyncratic place that reveals the mind of the illustrator while it carefully visualizes the text. The illustrations appeal for several reasons. First, they are imaginative, making use of ink stamps (and actual postage-stamp imagery) to add a dreamlike texture to the fleshy foliage. Stewart's "slithy toves" and "tulgey woods" are odd and amusing without being too scary for a picture-book audience, as John Tenniel's illustrations for Alice in Wonderland can be. What's more, the pictures depict a funny, childlike world that little ones can easily enter. Then there's Stewart's hero, an appealing Everyperson, who, upon slaying the Jabberwock--a sort of Edwardian gentleman gone awry, with a green face, a long striped tail, and a leafy green body-- reveals that the villain is nothing but a clockwork automaton. Thus, when the boy returns with the Jabberwock's head, Beowulfian grisliness is humorously avoided. Consider this a noteworthy addition to a notoriously difficult subgenre. 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. In muted, sepia tones sparked with lime green By Midwest Book Review O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! From offbeat illustrator Joel Stewart comes this utterly charming picture book adaptation of the celebrated nonsense rhyme "Jabberwocky" from Lewis Carroll's classic children's novel "Through the Looking Glass." In muted, sepia tones sparked with lime green, lemon yellow and apple red, Stewart paints the mysterious Jabberwocky as a creature part English dandy, part Beetlejuice and part hedge. "And, as in uffish thought he stood, the Jabberwock, with eyes of flame" and -- according to Stewart's whimsical drawings -- teeth of checker boards, guts of a robot, and elongated claws of regular manicure appointments. A supporting cast of characters appear and disappear without explanation (though, of course, none is needed) as do the odd cameo appearances of different postage stamps on every spread. None of this lovely nonsense should be surprising, as we've seen Stewart's quirky style before, in the picture book "The Adventures of a Nose," the strange story of a nose's quest for belonging. What is surprising, however, is that there is currently only one competing "Jabberwocky" book on the market: the intricate 1989 interpretation by Graeme Base, the author/illustrator of the bestselling "Animalia." 'Tis a brillig effort, to say the least. The most vorpal picture book effort in mome raths.

Not what you think By Judith Guenther-Adams` I collect editions of "Jabberwocky" so was I surprised to receive this book and find out it is a narrative telling of the classic poem. Started reading it and it was just terrible. I kept wondering where the editor was when this manuscript came in. After some research, I discovered it was written by a 12-yr-old boy!! Pretty good work for a pre-teen but NOT what one expects in a published work.

Perfect illustrated version of Jabberwocky for kids By Kimberly I'm a big fan of Jabberwocky, but I wanted an illustrated copy to make it easier to read to my 2-year old. This is the best edition I've found so far. The illustrations are fun and imaginative without being gruesome.

Water and Light: A Diver's Journey to a Coral Reef (Southwestern Writers Collection Series), by Stephen Harrigan

From Publishers Weekly A sparkling account of the underwater world off the coast of Grand Turk Island in the Caribbean. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews A leisurely tour of the coral reefs of Grand Turk Island, where novelist Harrigan (Jacob's Well, 1984) learns about nature and himself. Diving has always meant a great deal to Harrigan, but now, living far from the sea and worried that the activity is becoming nothing more than a hobby, he decides to spend an extensive period diving in the Caribbean. There, he will ``study the natural history of the coral reef, but the motivation was not as clear or, perhaps, as worthy. I wanted to be, at least for a time, my underwater self.'' He checks into a local motel on the island--a desolate and relatively unspoiled place where salt was once collected from inland pans--and begins his diving explorations. As he explores the reefs, dives down part of the great wall that edges the nearby 7,000-foot-deep channel, and chats to locals, Harrigan relates old diving adventures as far apart as Australia and Mexico. He observes the variety of fish and plant life, explains that coral is actually an animal, not a plant, and includes such diving lore as the story of the development of the aqualung--an invention that, as Jacques Cousteau wrote, meant that ``From this day forward we would swim across miles of country no man had known.'' Catching conches for his dinner, Harrigan laments the decline of the sea-turtle, ``a great being, venerable, unknowable,'' and admits to being angry with dolphins because he fails to interest them. Hoping to be transformed by the reef, his underwater destiny acknowledged, he ruefully realizes how indifferent the teeming underwater world is to his presence. He is ready to go home. A graceful and low-keyed celebration of diving and the dazzling underwater world it reveals, as much for the underwater enthusiast as for the armchair traveler. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review "Moving, intelligent and, in the best sense, literary.... Stephen Harrigan is anchored in reality; he knows that the environment he's describing is in serious jeopardy. At the same time, he has made this book sparkle with his remarkable ability to discuss the metaphysical and spiritual aspects of underwater exploration without ever sounding saccharine or murky." (New York Times Book Review)"[Harrigan] tells us about the people who live on Grand Turk, or come there on business, and he is given to reflecting on the subtleties of the underwater experience, but his real virtue as a writer is his ability to convey, in precise, lucid, prose, the marvels of the sea bottom." (New Yorker)"Harrigan ...captures the peacefulness of being rocked by salty currents, the massive beauty of the reefs, the exhilaration of the sport, and the mental scramble to retain fast-fading memories of sights almost unimaginable on land. Fellow divers will relish his camaraderie, while those who prefer staying topside will feel as though they've taken the plunge themselves." (Booklist)

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. the best piece of diving literature since Silent World By A Customer UT Press plans to re-issue this book in late 98 or 1999. This book simply gets it right. Without falling into the nature writing trap of endless superlatives, Harrigan lyrically describes what it's like to dive and appreciate the ocean. The book is full of interesting bits of natural history and biology, as well as amusing anecdotes from the author's actual experiences in Grand Turk. Turtles, dolphins, a whale shark, octopi, sharks, lobsters, the usual suspects among reef fish and Harrigan himself all are examined, explained, and ultimately, understood.Harrigan is a writer who dives, and the prose in places is exceptional. See his description of seeing a sea turtle from below ("like a rock that sprouted wings.") More importantly, he writes like an aficionado of the sport, not another ignorant but curious reporter. His enthusiasm for the subject, combined with his talent as a wordsmith, elevates this book to the same level as terrestrial classics like John Muir's "The Mountains of California." Nearly anyone who has been diving in the Caribbean, both vacationers and divemasters, who couldn't find the words to express what they felt upon surfacing, will appreciate this book. This novel should become a cult classic in the diving community.

Anderson This is the best book about scuba diving I've ever read and should be read by anyone and everyone that is interested in scuba diving. It does a fabulous job of describing the great things about scuba diving without telling you what you already know. That said, it is also a great story and would probably be enjoyed by non-scuba divers. This is a great gift idea for a diving inclined loved one. One warning... one of the reviewers recommended reading this to get your diving fix when you aren't going to be able to get underwater for a while; NOT TRUE. I found the exact opposite, this book only heightened my desire to go diving to near pathological levels! If you've read this, I'd also recommend reading Neutral Buoyancy by Tim Ecott which is another good book about diving. It has more history and straight information than this book.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I found a soul mate. . . . By Donna Shands I was in tears by the end of the first chapter-- I thought I was one of a FEW who feels more at home underwater than on the surface. I don't get to dive very often (family, etc.) but whenever I need to "dive", I pull out this book & I'm in Heaven. Harrigan's descriptions of not only what he sees but what feelings these visions invoke move me beyond words, as I think they would anyone who feels the ocean in their blood.

The only thing that keeps it from being a five is that I have empathy for those who do not have a substantial background in philosophy (particularly Nietzsche) and can keep up with all the subtle and not-so-subtle allusions. It also helps that I studied to be a Jesuit and have my doctorate in Ethics. Without these the book is a four; with these it is a five. I look forward to more from Dr. Tasey in the future.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Clash of Worldviews By Ratonis Book Review: “Jenna’s Flaw” by Lee Tasey (2015, Booklocker.com) Full disclosure: I am personally acquainted with the author, which creates something of a dilemma. I could offer uncritical praise, in the interest of helping to generate readership, or I can offer an honest critique containing positive assessment along with some misgivings I have. I will take the latter approach here, as I believe this is the most responsible, and friendly service a review can take. Author Tasey utilizes the personal experience of his protagonist, Carl Sorensen, as a vehicle for unfolding a commentary on the intellectual crisis of western civilization (his novel is dedicated to Western Civilization). Sorensen is a graduate student committed to the skeptical outlooks of dominant western thinkers, most notably Frederick Nietzsche, and is undertaking work toward a Ph.D. in Nebraska (Tasey’s actual location in life). Through his meeting a strange young woman, Jenna, Carl begins to doubt the power of the modern secular traditions grounded in the western Enlightenment. Jenna is very strange, and as the story progresses we come to understand that she exhibits signs of actual demon possession. Hence, Sorensen’s enlightenment “anti-supernaturalism” is challenged as he himself begins to experience strange phenomena, in response to which he takes the risk of consulting with Catholic priests. Although Sorensen’s worldview outlook is left in an ambiguous state at novel’s end, we get the sense that his experiences (which includes participation in an exorcism of Jenna) have led him to doubt the materialist dogmas of modern philosophy. Along the way, the narrative includes potshots at contemporary academic culture, especially the exploitation of adjunct teachers, and other brief references to popular culture, specifically rock music and specified real-life authors (e.g. Malachi Martin). Through all this, the vitalizing current is the confrontation of worldviews—the confident, boorish skepticism represented by Sorensen’s professor of philosophy Dr. Parsons, and what Sorensen actually experiences through his association with Jenna and his quest to understand the larger reality of lives not sequestered in the hall of academic presuppositions. Also fueling the storyline is the mystery of the death of a celebrated football player Kenny Winslow, whose apparent suicide death has shocked the public and lacks any coherent or plausible reason. The mystery of Jenna, Winslow, and the worldview confrontation provide the strength of Lee Tasey’s narrative and sustain reader interest throughout. And that is, of course, the bottom line—does the story keep you going? For me, the response is yes, I remained interested throughout. Nevertheless, I have some misgivings or questions concerning the author’s approach. Tasey’s descriptions of the educational, sports, and physical environment surrounding Lincoln, Nebraska are likely to prove problematic to people who actually live there. His description of the Nebraska capital city is somewhat grim and grimey, and the environmental background is confusing because of his integration of actual places with imaginary, fictionalized institutions and places. Kenny Winslow, for example, is the most celebrated football player in the state and city, but he is not a Cornhusker who played for the University of Nebraska, an institution cited in the novel. Rather he played for a fictional “Nebraska State University” and the “Bisons,” and it is the Bisons who are noted for having played epochal contests with the Miami University Hurricanes. A reader, especially one who lives in Lincoln, must wonder what is going on here. I understand “suspension of disbelief,” but if a real location (Lincoln and the university there) is the arena for the novel’s drama, one has to ask if it really works to introduce something to that environment that does not, in fact exist and whose activities stretch credulity. Also, there seems to be a lack of clarity about this fictional institution, which lies outside Lincoln itself, and appears as “Nebraska State University” at the beginning of the novel but is referenced as “Nebraska State College” later on.There are other awkward integrations of real-world places and fictional towns and institutions (e.g. there is no “Slippery Rock” town in Nebraska; the actual town of that name is located in Pennsylvania). These do not fracture the strength of Lee Tasey’s basic story, and maybe he has good reasons for this mix, but I wonder at its necessity. If anything, it seems an unnecessary distraction from the central issues that he wants to communicate. An author’s note concerning his approach might be helpful.A novel that has as its theme the clash of worldviews and the vulnerability of our civilization under the crisis of Truth is an intriguing project. Author Lee Tasey is intensely focused on the life of the mind and how (to borrow a phrase from Richard Weaver’s classic book) “ideas have consequences.” The novel left me wondering if perhaps we might be hearing more about the academic adventures of Carl Sorensen in stories yet to come.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Trilogy By Amazon Customer I see this novel as the first of a demonic trilogy either in book form or film. The intensity and depth of the author's characters has the reader wanting more. It's a great summer read.... Hoping for a sequel soon.

After her subsequent immigration to the U.S. and later to Canada, Nina's employment and education, and her experiences with romantic/sexual relationships, are a radical departure from the moral code she knew in China. Twice during the time she is living in North America, she travels back to China to reunite with her mother as well as friends, and to see how Chinese society and politics are evolving, and she finally decides, as a journalist, to interview and record her contemporaries' experiences of life in China for a Western audience. In doing so, however, as an escaped citizen who has returned with an American passport, Nina puts herself in dangerous situations and finds herself needing to flee from the red terror once again.

Calls Across the Pacific, by Zoë S. Roy

Review "The novel can be classified more or less as a kind of bildungsroman, as Nina attempts to integrate herself into a larger national identity, one that is ultimately complicated by the titular 'Calls Across the Pacific'." --Asian American Literature Fans "A persistent theme in Nina's story is her view of the evolution of Chinese culture. Is this process dependent on abrupt changes through violent revolution followed by a slow recovery of enduring values?"--Imagined Experience "The story flashes between the present 1970s and the early 1960s when Nina's family was persecuted by the Mao regime and she herself was at first a Red Guard before being shamed for her parent's crimes and sent to a re-education camp."--Back to Books"Zoe S. Roy's novel, Calls Across the Pacific, is a fascinating journey of a young woman, Nina Huang, whose adventure begins during the Cultural Revolution in China, follows her immigration to the United States, and eventually leads her to a new life in Canada. The story entwines the intimacy of a memoir and the panoramic sweep of eyewitness history, enmeshing us in the challenges of breaking away not only from the violent persecution of communism, but also from the oppressive moral norms of a tradition bound China. This courageous tale of perseverance in the face of adversity is a timeless rendering of the never ending quest for transformation and beauty." --Bianca Lakoseljac, author of Summer of the Dancing Bear"With Calls Across the Pacific, Zoe Roy continues to plumb her firsthand knowledge of everyday life in Maoist China. Her experience of this endlessly fascinating era, combined with a talent for detailed, humorous and sometimes heartbreaking storytelling, makes for a fine novel which delights and informs in equal measure. Roy captures the culture shock that assaults her protagonist Nina Huang, and shows how her birth culture never quite lets go, despite ownership of the iconic American passport."--Amanda Hale, author of Sounding the Blood, The Reddening Path, My Sweet Curiosity, and In the Embrace of the Alligator

By Nicola Mansfield A brilliant historical fiction set in the 1970s of a young woman who escaped Maoist China to freedom via Hong Kong to the US and finally comes to rest in Canada. But she doesn't find her final rest until she is able to go back and find out what happened to those she left behind, which she is able to do in the days leading up to the death of Chairman Mao. The story flashes between the present 1970s and the early 1960s when Nina's family was persecuted by the Mao regime and she herself was at first a Red Guard before being shamed for her parent's crimes and sent to a re-education camp. Takes a good look at the travesties inflicted on the people of any ilk under Mao's regime and Nina through her research on political science and a book she is writing brings both the political system and capitalism vs communism under the lens of an inquiring mind. The writer leads us through the people of China, showing that revolutions don't always end with the people as victors. Communism uses the people as a tool and leaves the people questioning why nothing gets any better. I found the book a quick read and enjoyed Nina as a character, at times the book even veered off into romance mode, but not too much :-) We are left with the people of China, especially the students, hoping the death of Mao now means some Western reform will come, some freedoms of thought and speech. It's a happy place to leave the people. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be and an author's note on the continued persecution of political crimes, human right's violations, the violent student uprising at Tiananmen Square, etc. would have been appropriate. But nonetheless, a lovely story. Roy's writing flows beautifully and I've enjoyed every one of her books to date.

Roy that describes the lives of characters affected by China’s Maoist Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). Her first very good novel, The Long March Home (Inanna Poetry & Fiction) published in 2011, was the story of three generations of women, one immersed in the time of Maoist oppression, one who escaped it in part, and a third who was not directly involved but seeks to understand her family’s legacy of life in the vast, ever changing China. In her second novel, Ms. Roy develops the character, Nina Huang, who escapes from Number 5 Military Farm, a re-education location for individuals from families tainted by family histories of perceived anti-Maoist revolutionary activity. Nina and her boyfriend attempt to flee to Hong Kong seeking asylum from a democratic government. The two are separated in flight, and 20 year old Nina makes her way to the U. S. with the generous help of Chinese expatriates. Working hard at tedious menial jobs, Nina makes a life for herself with the idea of ultimately learning about the contrasts between her Eastern and Western cultures through formal education.Nina earns opportunities for basic and advanced education in the U. S. and Canada and forms relationships in her new settings. But, she does not forget her roots in China that she perceives as positive but morally restrictive in the long run but oppressive and purgative in the revolutionary short term. Using her facility with languages, Nina develops her writing skills and sets out to record the history of her family and acquaintances as a journalist. Nina has a peaceful and fulfilling life in Canada but feels drawn back to China to record the stories of people who suffered greatly during the Maoist Cultural Revolution and its aftermath. A persistent theme in Nina’s story is her view of the evolution of Chinese culture. Is this process dependent on abrupt changes through violent revolution followed by a slow recovery of enduring values? Or is China sacrificing its cultural legacy by rapidly forcing changes in the peoples’ unifying philosophy and the country’s economic strategies?Calls Across the Pacific is written in a simple and direct style that is appropriate for teenage, young adult, and older adult readers. The freelance articles Nina writes about the experiences of a variety of people in China broadens readers’ understanding of its evolutionary/revolutionary history in the 20th Century.

Roy deserves four and half stars. This intriguing story of life under Chairman Mao is centered around the young woman Nina Huang has spent the past several years in a military labor camp, working the land and being re-educated by the peasants there. As a one-time member of Mao's Red Guards, she was a support of the Cultural Revolution but when her father was arrested as an enemy of the state and her mother supported her husband and was placed on house arrest, Nina was sent-down for re-education. Nina has many questions about her country but cannot ask them for fear of her life. At last she plans her escape and after several close calls makes it to the free city of Hong Kong, going on eventually to the United States where she learns that not everyone is treated as are the Chinese under Mao. With the help of her sponsor family, Nina goes to University and pursues a career in freelance writing using the stories of her country as basis for her articles. As time passes, Nina is afforded the opportunity to return to China (after Nixon's visit opens the door with China) where she meets once more the mother she never thought to see again. Going about the country and visiting friends, Nina soon learns that all is not what was hoped for with the easing of relations between the countries. A few years later, on a second visit to China for her mother's re-marriage, Nina is 'detained' and it is her friends and family who contrive to keep her new American citizenship secret to protect her, as she is still considered a traitor to the Chinese government. Along the way we are given glimpses into the lives of the common Chinese family and especially those who suffered as sent-down youths. Interwoven in the story is the telling of how Nina finds her womanhood and pursues romance and hope for her future family. The story here takes place in the 1960-1978 timeframe, during the reign of Chairman Mao. This reviewer grew up during the same time period and would be the same age as Nina Huang, yet still I knew nothing of the depth of what life in China was like. I knew it was not good but had no idea how difficult life under the Mao regime was; falling asleep in a soft bed while clutching a teddy bear was a far cry from sleeping on a pallet of twigs in a hut with little to no food and arising at dawn to work in the fields. The descriptions and recounting of life stories by many of the characters is the perfect expose of life at that time.Calls Across The Pacific is not a long book but is packed with so much information that you'll be hard pressed to put it down. Easy to read, narrated with a story-teller's voice, it is highly recommended by this reviewer.

Described by Roy Greenslade in the Guardian as 'the tireless archivist of Fleet Street memories (many of which may be true)', Revel Barker created and edited a website that The Times called 'a brilliant compendium of reminiscences of the great days of Fleet Street.' It ran for six years and in its heyday had more than 50,000 readers worldwide, every week. Now Barker has compiled the story of his own road to The Street, interspersed with anecdotes about the people he met and wrote about - the great and the good and the greedy - in politics, in business and in show-business, in war and in peace... but mostly in newspapers.

Excerpt from Travers Golf BookSince the day I first won the championship of the United States, in 1907, I have been asked by scores of golfers to write a book relating my experiences and explaining my method of playing the different shots. This I have endeavored to do to the best of my ability in the following pages. I have made it a point to impart the information at my command in the simplest possible manner so that both the novice and the more experienced player may readily understand.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One of the Greatest Amateurs of All Time By James Nissen (many may not know who he is, so here's a short bio)Jerome Travers was one of the greatest amateurs of all time. Coming from a family of means, Travers made the decision not to turn pro, but instead to contribute his talents to the game as an amateur. He won the U.S. Amateur four times (1907, 1908, 1912, 1913), the New Jersey Amateur three times, and the Metropolitan Amateur of New York five times. Francis Ouimet called him, "The best match player in the country." And if that amateur record was not already enough, Travers also won the 1915 US Open at Baltusrol. The Review"Travers' Golf Book" is not really an instructional manual for golf, as much as a collection of stories. Of the 378 page book, I would guess less than 100 pages are devoted to pure instruction. The lessons to be taken away from this book include the following:1. The respect that Travers had for his fellow competitors was unmatched. It says a lot about a golfer when he can speak so highly about those that he played against.2. Travers was a fighter. While speaking about all of the matches that he played in, you got the sense that Travers wanted to win all of them. This was no gifted athlete, merely spending time on the links because his family had money. Here was a guy who went out and wanted to win. And during the decade in which he played, he was arguably the greatest amateur in the United States.3. Travers did not play so well overseas. I thought it was interesting that a man of so much talent could not translate it to links golf. But in his book, he talks a lot about his disdain for the "half-shot" in golf. He felt that every club should be used to its full potential. I, admittedly have never played links golf, but from everything I've seen the half shot is one of the greatest weapons in the arsenal of the European player. Whether its playing through wind, rain, or landing the ball short of a green so that it can run up to the hole, every great links player knows the half shot.Unlike the swing of Jim barnes (first winner of PGA Championship), I do not think that modern day swing teachers would approve of Travers. He bent his left arm during the swing, straightened his right leg on the backswing, and played more than his fair share of shots with the ball off his right foot with an open stance. Also, he played the game with a baseball grip and his right hand tucked under the club. He could draw the ball when he wanted, no doubt, but also must have had days when his timing was quite off. You just don't see those kind of players today, instruction the way it is.TakeawaysNo matter how you feel about the style of a particular player, there are always things to be learned from golfers that are better than you. Here are some of my takeaways;1. When playing into a hooking wind, it's better to hook the ball into the wind, allow for the wind. The alternative to this would be to cut the ball into a hook wind, but like Harry Vardon says in "The Complete Golfer", that takes away too much distance from the shot. Travers agrees.2. A match is not over until it is over. Travers' golf book is filled with stories about golf matches that would seemingly end up one way, but fate turned things around. In one such case, a competitor was 7 up with 7 holes to go, and ended up losing. In other words, a golf match is never over till its over. Stay Focused.3. Half of putting is confidence.4. Take in all of the factors necessary to play the shot. And study your opponent as well.CriticismsTravers' golf book is a great little read. But the book pulls too much from news sources, magazines and newspapers to recount the tales of certain matches. Travers seems a competent enough writer himself to discuss the matches, what he learned from them, and how that helped him along the way.The pictures in the book are great, but I would love to have seen full swing sequences, rather than bits and pieces.ConclusionThe great part about reading books from this era is that at the end of the day, Travers found a way to get it done. Before modern equipment, modern golf balls, and all the other technological advances, here's a look at how he found a way to beat the best amateurs in the country. Perhaps it was because he learned from none other than Alex Smith, 2 time winner of the US Open, or perhaps he had the means and the drive to compete at a high level, time and time again.
