Great Expectations is Charles Dickens's thirteenth novel and his penultimate completed novel; a bildungsroman which depicts the personal growth and personal development of an orphan nicknamed Pip. It is Dickens's second novel, after David Copperfield, to be fully narrated in the first person. The novel was first published as a serial in Dickens's weekly periodical All the Year Round, from 1 December 1860 to August 1861. In October 1861, Chapman and Hall published the novel in three volumes. It is set among marshes in Kent, and in London, in the early to mid-1800s, and contains some of Dickens' most memorable scenes, including the opening, in a graveyard, where the young Pip is accosted by the escaped convict, Abel Magwitch. Great Expectations is full of extreme imagery – poverty; prison ships and chains, and fights to the death – and has a colourful cast of characters who have entered popular culture. These include the eccentric Miss Havisham, the beautiful but cold Estella, and Joe, the kind and generous blacksmith. Dickens's themes include wealth and poverty, love and rejection, and the eventual triumph of good over evil. Great Expectations is popular both with readers and literary critics, and has been translated into many languages, and adapted numerous times into various media.

Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens

Amazon.com Review Dickens considered Great Expectations one of his "little pieces," and indeed, it is slim compared to such weighty novels as David Copperfield or Nicholas Nickleby. But what this cautionary tale of a young man raised high above his station by a mysterious benefactor lacks in length, it more than makes up for in its remarkable characters and compelling story. The novel begins with young orphaned Philip Pirrip--Pip--running afoul of an escaped convict in a cemetery. This terrifying personage bullies Pip into stealing food and a file for him, threatening that if he tells a soul "your heart and your liver shall be tore out, roasted and ate." The boy does as he's asked, but the convict is captured anyway, and transported to the penal colonies in Australia. Having started his novel in a cemetery, Dickens then ups the stakes and introduces his hero into the decaying household of Miss Havisham, a wealthy, half-mad woman who was jilted on her wedding day many years before and has never recovered. Pip is brought there to play with Miss Havisham's ward, Estella, a little girl who delights in tormenting Pip about his rough hands and future as a blacksmith's apprentice. I had never thought of being ashamed of my hands before; but I began to consider them a very indifferent pair. Her contempt for me was so strong, that it became infectious, and I caught it. It is an infection that Pip never quite recovers from; as he spends more time with Miss Havisham and the tantalizing Estella, he becomes more and more discontented with his guardian, the kindhearted blacksmith, Joe, and his childhood friend Biddy. When, after several years, Pip becomes the heir of an unknown benefactor, he leaps at the chance to leave his home and friends behind to go to London and become a gentleman. But having expectations, as Pip soon learns, is a two-edged sword, and nothing is as he thought it would be. Like that other "little piece," A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations is different from the usual Dickensian fare: the story is dark, almost surreal at times, and you'll find few of the author's patented comic characters and no comic set pieces. And yet this is arguably the most compelling of Dickens's novels for, unlike David Copperfield or Martin Chuzzlewit, the reader can never be sure that things will work out for Pip. Even Dickens apparently had his doubts--he wrote two endings for this novel. --Alix Wilber

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up—A young man's burning desire to fulfill his "great expectations" of fame and fortune is presented in Charles Dickens's classic tale of love, madness, forgiveness, and redemption. Simon Vance's masterful narration brings to life such diverse personalities as Miss Havisham, the old woman who was abandoned on her wedding day and is determined to wreak revenge through her beautiful adopted daughter Estella; Joe, Pip's lumbering and slow-witted, but emotionally wise and faithful friend; the mysterious Magwitch, a convict who turns out to be Pip's financial benefactor; and Pip, the boy who longs for a destiny greater than that of living out his days as a blacksmith's apprentice. The companion ebook features automatic start-up, keyword searching, PDF printable format, and table of contents. An exceptionally skilled rendering of this classic.—Cindy Lombardo, Cleveland Public Library, OH Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Review "No story in the first person was ever better told."

Although I don't think it should be "forced" on schoolchildren (they will only hate it) I read this novel when I was a child and I loved it. I have just re-read it now and I enjoy it all the more. This is my favorite novel by Dickens. It is from his later period and is criticized for being too dark - which, however, makes it more perfect for today's sensibilities. Stephen King cites this work as one of his favorites: he believes that it is this book that brought the gothic novel mainstream. Was there ever a novelist who created more memorable characters than Dickens? Here, we meet perhaps his most intriguing - Miss Havisham. For anyone unfamiliar with the story, I will not spoil it by describing her. The story is similar to parable about the prodigal son - good Pip inexplicably comes into some money and goes off to the corrupting city.AN IMPORTANT THING TO NOTE: Dickens wrote two ending for this book. His friends thought that the original ending was too downbeat and they asked him to come up with a different one. It is the upbeat ending that is the official ending of the novel. However, most critics agree that the original unpublished ending is better. Most modern editions feature the unpublished ending in an appendix. MAKE SURE YOU BUY A COPY THAT CONTAINS THE ORIGINAL ENDING!

132 of 142 people found the following review helpful. One of the Greatest Novels Ever Written By Anne Rice Why do I come here to "review" this? It isn't anyone's book club selection, no. But tonight I want to talk about this incomparably rich and wonderful book, and how as a fourteen year old kid I simply sank into it, taking it slowly week by week, glorying in its mysteries, its great grotesque portrait of Miss Havisham in her rotting bridal finery, its often painful recounting of a young boy's awakening to a seductive world beyond the blacksmith's forge to which destiny has condemned him. This book was about me. It was about wanting to learn, wanting to transcend, wanting to achieve while anything and everything seems hopelessly beyond one's dreams. Of course life changes for Pip. And the world Pip enters was a world that dazzled me and only made my adolescent ambitions burn all the more hurtfully. I think this book is about all who've ever tried for more, ever reached for the gold ring -- and it's about some, of course, who've gotten it. It's also a wondrous piece of storytelling, a wondrous example of how in the first person ("I am, etc." ) a character can tell you more about himself than he himself knows. What a feat. And a very strange thing about this book, too, was the fact that Dickens said more about Pip and Pip's dreams than Dickens knew he was doing. Dickens himself didn't quite realize, I don't think, the full humanity of the character he created. Yet the character is there -- alive, captivating, engaging us throughout with full sympathy. Go for it. If you never read anything else by Charles Dickens, read and experience this book. Afterwards, David Copperfield will be a ride in the sunshine, I assure you. And both books will stand by you forever. For whom am I writing this? For myself perhaps just because Pip meant and still means so much. For some one perhaps who's unsure about this book and needs a push to dive into a classic. Oh, is this book ever worth the effort. -. Enough. Read it, know it.

On the contrary, I'm most pleased with the information I gathered by simply thumbing through the meager 46-pages -- one of these pages caught my eye though and that tidbit by itself makes this book a BIG YES(!) for anyone contemplating buying an RV. I won't go into details but just his advice on inspecting the roof tells me this guy has lots to share. Oh, "inspect the roof on all fours, and bring your own ladder" (paraphrased), furthermore he supports his directions with good reasons and therein lies its value. My advice: Go for it. Hillbilly

By Sheryl Garrett Very comprehensive, indepth booklet on what to look for when buying a used RV, including online access to a checklist you can print out. Far too detailed for me to attempt to inspect a vehicle myself, but I will know the right questions to ask and red-flag items to look for before ever considering a purchase. I will also hire someone to do the actual inspection.

As two young men travel there on separate pilgrimages, neither has any idea that they will soon find much more than they ever imagined. As his plane lands in Axum, Garret Holcomb cannot help but wonder if he is on a true pilgrimage in search of the lost Covenant or to escape from the emptiness of emotional bankruptcy. After the two realize they have much in common, they pair up to help each other with their missions. Phantasmagoria and other poems, by Lewis Carroll

Review "The black and white illustrations, by Arthur B. Frost, are as witty as the poem. Charming." -- Fortean Times, March 2000

About the Author Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer, mathematician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. Best known for his classics Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and Jabberwocky, Carroll was also an accomplished inventor who created an early version of what is today known as Scrabble. The publication of Alice s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 brought Carroll a certain level of fame, although he continued to supplement his income through his work as a mathematics tutor at Christ Church, Oxford College. Carroll s whimsical characters and nonsensical verse resonated with Victorian-era readers, and his books continue to be enjoyed by numerous modern societies dedicated to his promoting his works.

The poetry of Homer with the wit of Dr. Suess. I would suggest this book to anyone who likes poetry in any form.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Vintage Carroll enhanced by Frost's art and Gardner's notes By M. J. Smith This book has woodcuts by Arthur B. Frost that capture the humor of Carroll's poem perfectly. Martin Gardner has provided a short introduction with letters from Carroll to Frost regarding the art and to a friend with regards to para-psychological phenomena. He also provides notes for obscure words or puns. Frost and Gardner are what makes this the version of Carroll's Phantasmagoria you should read. The poem itself is a conversation between a man of 42 and a less than adept ghost. Among the things learned are the 5 rules of behavior for a ghost, the housing requirements for a ghost etc. Carroll's vintage humor is expressed in a narrative poem of seven cantos using verses of five rhymed lines. The poetry is well written - the rhymes are not forced but natural, the humor relatively subtle. This book justifies its being in the series "Literary Classics".

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. I'm Not Educated Enough To Understand It By theboombody I love Lewis Carroll's work, but sometimes I just have no freaking clue what he's talking about. I experienced this sensation of vagueness a few times during my reading of the Sylvie and Bruno books, but I felt it most while reading some of the poems in Phantasmagoria. But what I could understand I really enjoyed. I really loved Hiawatha's Photographing, Melancholetta, Size and Tears, and The Lang Coortin', although some of these poems have strangely inconclusive endings. It's interesting to see Carroll's last poem in this book, Fame's Penny Trumpet, where he's really, really mad at academic big-wigs.Make sure you read Alice before even attempting to read this.

Another wonderful summation of how to live life joyously from one of the original LOA proponents By ksgarrett Douglas Fairbanks wrote "Make Life Worth While" shortly after writing "Laugh and Live" with both books focusing on how to live as Doug did: an exuberant, joyful, laughter-filled living of living. Douglas' ideas are precursor's to much of what was latter written by many authors, including Napolean Hill and Norman Vincent Peale. Great read and reminder of how to live!

About the Author Doug grew up in Texas in the fifties and enjoyed going to the movies when movie going was at its peak. He liked to make up a story line in his head, and it would take months to develop until he would complete the story and commit it to memory. Then he would tell the stories to his cousins when they got together. He likes to write poems and lyrics for songs. He plays the guitar and likes to sing the old country songs. He got his pilot license at age twenty-two. He is a custom home builder and enjoys designing homes as well.

My father belonged to the widespread family of the Campbells, and possessed a small landed property in the north of Argyll. But although of long descent and high connection, he was no richer than many a farmer of a few hundred acres. For, with the exception of a narrow belt of arable land at its foot, a bare hill formed almost the whole of his possessions. The sheep ate over it, and no doubt found it good; I bounded and climbed all over it, and thought it a kingdom.

Smith The purpose of this review is to assure customers who may be interested in buying a Johannesen edition of George MacDonald's work that they are indeed getting the best copy available. The Portent and Other Stories is a rather strange collection of MacDonald's work containing the eerie title story, The Cruel Painter, The Castle, The Wow O' Rivven, The Broken Swords, The Grey Wolf, and Uncle Cornelius His Story. I say that this collection is strange in accordance to the subject matter of some of these stories in relation to the rest of MacDonald's work. Strong elements of the gothic abound quite convincingly. The physical quality of the book itself is worth the money. Like all Johannesen editions (which are considered as authoritative editions amongst literary critics), this book is hand-bound in a hard, green cover with acid-free pages, both of which promise to last over a century of use. For anyone wishing to collect MacDonald's work, this would be the best copy to buy. I hope this review has been helpful to you.

I purchased this book as a gift for my niece because I thought she would enjoy this particular collection of stories -- in his great mass of work there is such a rich variety of fiction and nonfiction, fantasy and romance, instruction and teaching...and the underlying framework for all of is simply and profoundly the love of God. If you read something by George MacDonald that does not appeal to you, try something else, because there is such wealth there and the next thing you read might be the one that you will want to read over and over throughout the rest of your life.

Rowling must have read some George MacDonald By Pamela McCunn If you like the Harry Potter stories or Lord of the Rings you need to introduce yourself to the works of George MacDonald. In "The Portent" George MacDonald tells a story of courage, duty, and friendship with a wee bit of the Unknown in that region of thin places. The symbolism begins in Chapter 1.
