Old Style Apocalypse By Curmudgeon Remember when post-apocalyptic fiction was all about fallout shelters and Geiger counters and mutations and fear of Russkies? The Cold War warped the minds and writing styles of a generation or two.Leiber absorbed his share of that warping, but damn good writers are damn good writers, regardless. Yes, this story is dark and warped by the nuclear fears of the Cold War. But it also manages to be dreamily atmospheric, not half as negative as other post-apocs of the time, and to evoke an eerie beauty in places, even as the roentgens mount.It's hard to go wrong with Fritz Leiber.

The "story lines" are good, prompting Benjamin Britten to use two of the characters for his opera Peter Grimes. But getting through the "poem" is difficult because of forced rhymes, and an irregular cadence. Also, the book is a photo copy of the original published book from 1810, an ex library book, so the pages were filled with splotches, faded text, and even library markings. Still the stories are socially insightful, some are sad, some are humorous, and some just right down strange. I suggest skipping the dedication at the front. I found it just a long winded groveling and adds nothing to the story. It would be nice is someone took the time to "translate" the stories into a non-poem. It would be so much more enjoyable that way.

Moore Though not one of John Keats' very best poems, Lamia is a major work and essential for anyone interested in him. It has his signature unparalleled beauty but is also unusually thoughtful, with intriguing musings on illusion vs. reality and the nature of love, beauty, and art. Keats' lament about empiricism destroying natural wonder has heavily influenced everyone from Edgar Allen Poe to Richard Dawkins, and Lamia remains central to the art/nature vs. science debate. The story is also interesting in itself; Keats brings a fantasy world vividly to life, draws us in emotionally, and even has a devastating ending. Finally, the poem is impressive technically, showing Keats' growing couplet mastery. One should certainly read his best-known works first, but this should be an early stop; that said, the fact that it is virtually every Keats collection makes a standalone very hard to justify. The important thing at any rate is to read it in some form.

By chaos dollheads this poetry reaches straight into me. it bypasses much and speaks in the language and rhythm of, what -- the tongues of my mind, my soul, the universe i inhabit? the poems tend to be short, but the poet makes such use of words that the meanings unfold into a space larger than space on the page and by far. even if you feel poetry isn't your thing, it may be that you haven't found the works that move you. this moves me. support real art. support a real artist. and, most importantly, experience this for yourself.

I've followed this poet for many years and she never fails to leave you feeling raw with a guttural aftertaste in your throat. Relatable and real, her work asks you to ride shotgun on her journey through the most personal of hells. At the end of this sensate, voyeuristic peepshow you may be a drained vessel but you will thank her graciously for the pleasure. The vulnerability in which she allows her readers to drench themselves is truly a benevolent gift. Buy the book...you won't be disappointed.

Good mystery, bad story structure By Paul Roberge The first part of this novel present a fast-paced, suspenseful story of murder and detection, with effective surprises. I would give that section of the novel 5 stars. Unfortunately, the murderer is unmasked two-thirds of the way through. The rest is anticlimactic, the retelling at length of the story of the murder before its discovery, a story that we already know for the most part. The retelling is (for my taste) too detailed, beginning with plot-irrelevant information on the origins of one of the characters. The retelling does go on to explain some of the details of the crime, but these are usually slight: such as why was one sofa pillow was found wrinkled and the other marked by a drop of blood.Unless you're interested in the back-story, I would recommend skipping Chapters 15 (Celia's Story) through 20 and going straight to Hainaud Explains (Chapter 21, location 2750).Generally, the writing is good, the characters are credible, and the plot holds interest. Hainaud the detective has an ambivalent personality that flips between kindliness and biting sarcasm, often at the expense of a happenstance sidekick named Mr. Ricardo who repeatedly states the obvious as if he were making brilliant deductions.

Inspector Hanard was a famous detective who was on vacation when he was called to solve the murder of Madame Dauvray. A psychic girl, Celia, did fortune-telling and Madame gave her gifts is their prime suspect and then she disappears. The characters are interesting and the mystery good.

About the Author English novelist and playwright Wilkie Collins was a prolific writer with a body of work comprising thirty novels, over sixty short stories, more than a dozen plays, and a wide range of non-fiction pieces. Collins is best known for his novels The Woman in White, an early sensation novela genre combining shocking gothic horror with everyday domestic settingsand The Moonstone, which is credited as one of the first modern mystery novels. In the 1850s Collins met Charles Dickens and the two struck up a friendship, which lead to Collins becoming a frequent contributor to Dickens s journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Many of his stories have been adapted for film, including Basil, A Terribly Strange Bed, The Moonstone and The Woman in White. Collins died in 1889 at the age of 65.

By Erica Prior to reading this, A Rogue's Life, I had only read the most obvious and popular works by Wilkie Collins, The Woman in White and The Moonstone. Of course, I loved those books - so when I saw A Rogue's Life at my local bookstore, I picked it up. I was attracted by the description on the inside cover of the narrator, who has failed at a variety of pursuits and become 'disenchanted with life.' Perhaps I, at times, think of myself as a bit of a rogue, so upon reading the description I immediately purchased the book.This book is delightful. Wilkie Collins is all about sensation and entertainment - and his is a great writer to boot! However, the book description got it wrong. The narrator is never 'disenchanted with life.' Despite his many setbacks, he always approaches life with optimism. In fact, in the foreword, Collins mentions the tone of 'boisterious gaiety' that pervades the work, attributing it to the grand life he was leading at the time in Paris. As a result, this short novel is filled with humor and adventure, and surfs along on a tide of good cheer. Add in the fact that it was serialized, and you get those wonderful cliffhanger chapter endings that just keep you reading!

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Wilkie Collins scores with Softly tale By dikybabe I just laughed and rejoiced in this short tale of intrigue of the protagonist Frank Softly. And what a rogue he is, indeed, and ever more likely to gain a place in a confidence game of the worst sort, confeiting, no less. What fun to venture across England and into Wales and Scotland with this upper middle class scoundrel and hear his adventures "in his own words". Sort of made me think of Henry Fielding's Tom Jones character, and some the the delicious characters of Dickens' own creations as well. I am currently immersed in catching up on my Wilkie Collins' reads and highly recommend that other readers do the same.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A humorous drama By Israel Drazin This is a book that can be acquired for nothing from sources such as amazon because its copyright has long expired. Collins said he wrote the short novel when he lived next to Charles Dickens and had a very happy life. The novel reflects this joy, but it also contains an interesting drama. Its humorous protagonist is a likeable scamp who was tossed out by his family because he insulted his grandmother by publically displaying a mocking caricature of her. He moved from job to job, never being successful in any of them. His adventures are generally funny. Two stand out. In one he painted fake paintings of famous masters such as Rembrandt until his employer was caught; although he saves him. In another, a much longer tale, he falls in with a clearly disreputable fake doctor called Dulcifer, and obvious play on the name Lucifer, falls in love with his daughter, and does things no reasonable person would do because he loves her. It is certainly worth the money to read this tale; however the mocking tone of the description of the head thief of the painting counterfeits as a funny-speaking Jew is as insulting as Dickens' portrayal of Fagan and Shakespeare's description of Shylock.

Inspirational Role Model for All By Michelle Lynn Randall The story of NBA basketball player Klay Thompson is a valuable read, not because he had to over come hardship or tragedy to get where he is today, but because of the quiet and calm manner in which he has learned and processed the rules and become the success he is today.Klay Thompson was a player who listened to his father, learned his lessons well and has his head on straight. It's refreshing to see an NBA star who learned how to budget and live well within his means from his parents. So many players go bankrupt when their careers are over because they never learned the basic lessons of saving money and budgeting.Klay is also a role model in that he does not get in trouble. There was one recorded incident in college that made such an impact on Klay that he has kept his nose clean and has lived an incredibly tame life for a basketball player.For these reasons alone Klay is a wonderful inspiration and a role model for younger children. This is a great book for adults and children to read to get to know more about Klay, where he came from and what he is about.

Great bio of Klay Thompson By Rachel Horon "Klay Thompson: The Incredible Story" is all about the up and coming guard of the Golden State Warriors who is the model of hard work and ethics in the world of professional basketball. It is interesting that he learned a lot about the sport from his father, Mychal Thompson, who was a two-time champion of the Lakers. Not only did Klay improve his game and statistics each year in college and in the NBA, but he was part of the team to win the 2015 NBA finals. While his personal history is short, there is a lot to share about his life and his plays. This includes his influences and basketball heroes.This book is a wealth of resources from his biographical story to his game statistics and critiques. This can be appealing to basketball fans or sport biography readers. It is well written and an interesting read.

The author goes in great detail about every important event from his professional and personal life. Klay Thompson is an amazing basketball shooter and his story can inspire a lot of people. He reached the high point of his career very fast. He was able to make amazing three-pointers. He signed a contract until the end of 2015 for the 2014-2015 NBA season. This is a captivating book about his childhood and career. I really love how a simple young man transformed into a successful well-known basketball star.

Technically, a root cellar is any storage location that uses natural cooling, insulating and humidifying of the earth. Building a root cellar is only applicable if you have snowy and winter conditions. This book has 50 guide on how to build your own root cellar. You might not be using them now but in the future you will, nobody knows.

About the Author Joseph Smith Fletcher (1863-1935) was a journalist and the author of over 200 books. Born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, he studied law before turning to journalism. His earlier works were either histories or historical fiction, and he was made a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He didn’t start writing mysteries until 1914, though before he died he had written over 100 in the genre.

Small town secrets, blackmail & murder By Patto This novel tales place in an obscure small town by the Yorkshire moors - an ideal spot for two ex-cons to start life over. Which is precisely what Mr. Mallelieu and Mr. Cotherstone have done. After serving time for fraud thirty years earlier, Mallelieu is now mayor of Haymarket. Cotherstone is the borough treasurer. Both have served the town well, and together they've built up a successful contracting company through honest hard work.Then a blackmailer arrives in town to trade his knowledge of their background for hush money. When the blackmailer, who has passed for a harmless antiquarian, is found murdered, the plot takes off in earnest.Events follow hard and fast upon each other: a mistaken arrest, a piling up of circumstantial evidence, lively court scenes, and finally a second murder. Two cases of young love quietly emerge along with the murder mysteries.J. S. Fletcher has a genius for character delineation. The personalities of the mayor and treasurer are forceful and fascinating. The housekeeper of the murdered antiquarian is a creepy, scrawny creature who sleeps "like a dog with one ear and an eye open." The young women in the story are admirably self-possessed. And there's more than one clever lawyer to give good advice. Venerable old solicitors often appear in Fletcher's novels, reflecting his time studying law.The detective work is done by a variety of interested parties - friends, family, private investigators, lawyers and policemen. Fletcher's complex plots are always enlivened by tidbits of critical information flowing in from surprising quarters.Fletcher is one of my favorite vintage mystery writers. The Borough Treasurer, set in his native Yorkshire, was published in 1921. It's typical Fletcher - and a delightful read. The Resurrected Press edition is nicely formatted, well edited and includes a charming little introduction.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Engaging Yarn By S. Bell J.S. Fletcher had a knack for spinning off engaging who-dunnits with a minimum of fuss. They are all set in England and usually involve some kind of financial scam, whether it be stealing an inheritance, defrauding a bank, recovering stolen gems, etc. This one, involving two esteemed businessmen trying to cover up their criminal pasts, is no exception. The plot creaks a bit with too many coincidences but, what the heck, it is a racy yarn with plenty of well-sketched characters.

As I write this introduction, a gray squirrel scampers up a stately white oak tree only yards from the window over my desk. Farther to the East, I can see a hardwood thicket that harbors a variety of wildlife species. I cannot see the animals that reside in the dense woods, but make no mistake, they are there. They live near me, and I live near them; we share the same environment. It has been my good fortune to live in the suburbs or rural areas for almost three decades. During this period, I have come to know numerous animals — some were welcome, others that were not. That’s what this book is about: coping with wildlife and its behavior, and understanding its needs as well as our own. I have also enjoyed many years of camping, fishing, hiking, hunting and photographing wildlife in our wonderful outdoors. These activities have kept me closely attuned to nature as I study wildlife and learn its habits. My trade is almost as satisfying. I am a full-time outdoor writer and photographer. So, when I cannot pursue the outdoors on location, I can at least be writing about nature. The title of this book in no way is meant to imply that animals are nuisances. On the contrary, animals provide us with contentment and well being. I enjoy watching them and admiring their habits whenever possible. However, in recent years mushrooming human populations have expanded deep into the animal’s kingdom. We have also come to realize that animals will occasionally take it upon themselves to share our belongings or impose a danger. Thus, we must prevent the problem from recurring, either by controlling the nuisance animal or by making adjustments at the problem site.
