Fitbit - The Complete Guide To Using Fitbit For Weight Loss and Increased Performance

Is the Fitbit worth it's price tag? Dressing with new technologies is fashionable and certainly here to stay. Smart bracelets appear everywhere as an ultramodern accessory with a very interesting and futuristic technology footprint. They give that extra incentive for those who already practice or are thinking of starting a small or large range, unplanned, exercise. One can mainly interact with notifications on mobile and tablet or the measurement of information on exercise and health. They can become very interesting accessories for many independent users needing motivation. The concept of wearable technology is definitely here to stay and we have many indications of this. A recent report by ON World Institute predicted that 700 million sports equipment devices will be sold around the world over the next five years. Within this segment, it is undeniable that the spotlights are centred on the Fitbit. The Fitbit Flex promises to monitor their user 24 hours a day obtaining various data, such as number of steps, distance, calories burned, hours slept and even the quality of their sleep. Clearly geared for those who like or want physical activities. I’ve been a Fitbit user for some time now, and it took me some time to get the hang of its unique features. I checked on the main website and some other forums, but I learned most of what I know by experimenting with it. I’ve written this short guide to help the new Fitbit user. I am not sponsored by Fitbit, nor do I receive any commission for you choosing to buy their product This is an honest assessment of my experience. There are some things I would change, which I’ll come onto later, but overall I’ve been very pleased with it. I hope you in turn find some value from this guide, and make the most of this fitness tech.

Langston Hughes's stories about Jesse B. Semple--first composed for a weekly column in the Chicago Defender and then collected in Simple Speaks His Mind, Simple Takes a Wife, and Simple Stakes a Claim--have been read and loved by hundreds of thousands of readers. In The Best of Simple, the author picked his favorites from these earlier volumes, stories that not only have proved popular but are now part of a great and growing literary tradition.

Simple might be considered an Everyman for black Americans. Hughes himself wrote: "...these tales are about a great many people--although they are stories about no specific persons as such. But it is impossible to live in Harlem and not know at least a hundred Simples, fifty Joyces, twenty-five Zaritas, and several Cousin Minnies--or reasonable facsimiles thereof."

As Arnold Rampersad has written, Simple is "one of the most memorable and winning characters in the annals of American literature, justly regarded as one of Hughes's most inspired creations."

The Best of Simple (American Century), by Langston Hughes

About the Author

Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, went to Cleveland, Ohio, lived for a number of years in Chicago, and long resided in New York City's Harlem. He graduated from Lincoln University in 1929 and was awarded an honorary Litt. D. in 1943. He was perhaps best known as a poet and the creator of Simple, but he also wrote novels, biography, history, plays (several of them Broadway hits), and children's books, and he edited several anthologies. Mr. Hughes died in 1967.

A low class working African-American man of little education but with a lot of common wisdom, he attends the same bar and has discussions with the bartender (ie. the narrator) regarding social and, most important, racial issues during that period in America (the '50s). Somewhat dated now (or that's what we hope), the stories are still enjoyable. What makes it so enjoyable is the great dialogue, which is of such clever wit. From the first line that Simple utters, it defines him: "If you want to know about my life, don't look at my face, don't look at my hands. Look at my feet and see if you can tell how long I been standing on them." No wonder Langston Hughes later turned to writing for the theatre. It's a pity he's not around anymore. Most movies today could really use someone like him to craft their dialogue.

20 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Simply Timeless By Tamara Many people praise the poetry of Langston Hughes, but I believe that his prose is just as relevant in regards to social criticism, and as magnificent in form. Reading Simple's tall tales, and his anecdotes as he experienced Harlem reminded me of the stories my Grandparents told of how Chicago was during the great Northern Migration. This collection is a wonderful introduction to Jesse B. Simple

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The Black Aristotle By T. Kelley Collected here in this book is some of the BEST OF SIMPLE (Semple). Simple was a character first introduced in the Chicago Defender and one who quickly won over a diverse group of readers. Here you will find his talking buddy at Paddy's Bar, varying female characters who function as both pleasure and the occasional headache for Simple, and a generous offeringing of black country folk wisdom on a variety of topics, a few still with us today as when Simple first offered them up for thought. The reader piggybacks Simple through all his trials of life as a black man in Harlem and the U.S. Throughout it all, there is this inescapable sense of lonliness and despair which in the end is buoyed up with laughter, perseverance, and an eternal hope for better times to come.James Baldwin said he could understand his father's rage and anger at whites, and, his mother's desire to build bridges of understanding and tolerance with whites through the character of Jesse B. Semple (Simple), Langston Hughes' most endearing character who is often called the black Aristotle. Baldwin's comment was perceptive because these two divergent views were embodied in Hughes himself and much of his body of work. (Hughes said that in the Simple stories it was often him having conversations with himself.) Hughes didn't hold a favorable view of whites in general as critics and others have already noted. He had too often been at the stinging end of injustice for being a proud African American while at the same time not being given the same treatment as less talented white writers within the same publishing house as himself. At the same time, unlike the rise of black militants he witnessed toward the last years of his life, he always understood that some whites where allies in a shared humanity and fight for justice with many blacks and should not be lumped into one large catagory as instigators of intolerance.Like Simple, Hughes wanted to keep hope alive for better times ahead. The poem I DREAM A WORLD is a good example.

The object of this book, which is addressed to all cultured men and women, is to set forth the primitive manifestations of love and to throw light on those strange emotional climaxes which I have called "Metaphysical Eroticism." I have taken no account of historical detail, except where it served the purpose of proving, explaining and illustrating my subject. Nor have I hesitated to intermingle psychological motives and motives arising from the growth and spread of civilisation. The inevitable result of a one-sided glimpse at historical facts would have been a history of love, an undertaking for which I lack both ability and inclination. On the other hand, had I written a merely psychological treatise, disregarding the succession of periods, I should have laid myself open to the just reproach of giving rein to my imagination instead of dealing with reality.

Poetry. "Lewis Turco... appears to have combined the longevity of Utnapishtim with the energy and industry of Gilgamesh: once seized with inspiration, he wrote THE HERO ENKIDU at white heat in his eightieth year. The inspiration itself is of the kind that, once someone has come up with it, makes us wonder why no one ever thought of it before, because in a number of ways Enkidu is a more interesting and attractive figure than Gilgamesh."—Michael Palma, from the Introduction

Oh By Clarinda Harriss I speak with a forked tongue: one fork is that of a person immersed in Medieval literature, hence very much interested in the epic tradition; one fork is that of a person so sophomoric she had never been able to hear or see "Enkidu" without singing "inky dinky parlay voo" all day long. But thanks to Lew Turco's masterly Enkidu has been rescued from his thousands of years as merely an epic sidekick in the first epic poem ever written. Thank you, Lew. Another tour de force-- in service of a great cause. Oh, and great fun to read.

An Ancient Story Reborn By Martha M Grout, MD, MD(H) Pure literary gold arrived in our mailbox yesterday afternoon in the form of your newest book THE HERO ENKIDU. You were absolutely correct in your prediction: I LOVE all you have done with this ancient story and you have certainly revitalized it for all future readers. The accolades are well deserved. Congratulations and best wishes.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Turco's New Take on Oldest Extant Epic By rfh The Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh is five millenia old. Such an antiquity doesn't seem likely to speak to readers today, in any measure. But it is a story examining the nature of friendship, the nature of loss, and the troubling question of human mortality. It is therefore as relevant to modern readers as it was in the beginning, when it existed first as an oral tale, and then when writing came along, as cuneiform inscriptions on clay tablets. Gilgamesh has heretofore been the hero, the epic's central figure. The story's emphasis has of course been on the semi-divine king, over the centuries in various renderings. What Lewis Turco does infuses the old tale with warm new energy by placing the emphasis on Enkidu, the wholly mortal and vulnerable companion to the king. In the course of the tale, Enkidu grows: from the innocent playmate of the animals, through experience, to become a seasoned and trusted warrior and leader. When Gilgamesh is set on destroying the ogre Humbaba, Enkidu advises him against it, but takes the dangerous lead position when they undertake the enterprise. The elders advise Gilgamesh: Let Enkidu be in the van And you will be safe Shamash has sworn. Using the Anglo-Saxon alliterative verse form, Turco gives the tale the feel of antiquity, but a fresh antiquity, not that of Homer or the Bible. The story races along—it never lags--and that speed is due in part to the hemistitch line pattern. Much of the delight of the rest is due to the splendid diction, the exacting choices, of a peerless poet. And forth they marched together, the heroes And their warrior army to find the spot Whre Humbaba dwelt in the Cedar Forest where Enkidu had been born ...

One of the grand masters of Victorian literature, Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors' prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and "slave" factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years' formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney's clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work.

Charming and blissfully opinionated By booklover I never appreciated Charles Dickens as such a charming writer until I read this book, so after reading this, as an adult, I went back to his most familiar books and found that I still enjoyed this one best! It is written like he is an oral storyteller and is so engrossing as to make it difficult to put down. I originally thought due to the title that I would just read it aloud to my boys but I found when they had fallen asleep I couldn't stop and have since read this book at least three times and bought a used copy for all my nieces and nephews. The history is very one sided and from an Englishman's point of view he has a poor opinion of his royals with the Great Alfred being the first and last king of any esteem. His descriptions of the wars with the thousands of dead contrast sharply with the "clean" wars of today. Fields with thousands lying slaughtered is incomprehensible. Life was so cheap then at least as described by Dickens. This is such an engrossing history but with so much strong opinion it certainly wouldn't pass muster in todays historical circles which is part of why it is so fun and dare I say naughty to read. One of the most enjoyable books I have ever read!

I progressed from filling the endpapers with infantile scribbles to actually reading some. My two favorites were A Christmas Carol and a Child's History of England. I read and reread this book many times. What drew me in was the sweep of history from King Arthur to just before Victorian times told in incredibly colorful prose. Of course, the book's title tells it all. This is the exact opposite of academic history. Here, there are no pages long footnotes giving dry scholarly arguments pro and con. Nor is it like modern textbooks pushing anachronistic agendas in a heavy handed manner. No, this is history told by a great novelist for the purpose of helping young people appreciate the history of their civilization. This is precisely the effect it had on me. The book captures history through the telling of tales, legends, and people. The prose is, often quite vivid. I always remember this phrase: "and he was tied to a horse, taken to the Isle of Ely where his eyes were pulled out of his head..." No kid, raised on slam, bang, pow movies and comic books could miss the point here. History is not for the faint-hearted. One of Dickens' strengths as a writer has been to show that we live in a world of consequences.Because of this book, I learned to love history. Not history as memorization of dates, but history as the actions and reactions of living, breathing people. Rereading this story today is just as exciting a trip as it was 6o years ago, when I was in 5th grade. And...you can't beat the price on Kindle.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I Loved this Book! By Deirdre Tolhurst I enjoyed this book more than many others by more renowned writers. I was not disappointed in the end, I was very satisfied; yet I didn't want it to end. One is not left hanging, but it was like eating a perfectly cooked steak. Every bite is savored and when it is all gone, although satisfied, just one more bite would be great. I truly hope that Mr. Rossi writes a sequel to this book. Set during the second world war, I was able to see things from the perspective of a family living in England during the blitz. The characters were all very engaging, and I had a sense of being right there with them as their story unfolded. If you are looking for a book that you will enjoy just for the sake of reading, this is it. I now intend to read Mr. Rossi's first book, Flowers on the Balcony.
