This was my second book by Horváth and it too deals with the mindset of youth who were being exploited by the fascists shortly before the outbreak of WWII. Unlike the the other work (Jungend Ohne Gott), which focused primarily on indoctrination, this book explores the difficult social and economic conditions that helped the Nazis rise to power. The story is narrated in the first person by a wounded soldier who had earlier found a sense of belonging (as well as warm clothes and and a paycheck) in the military, only to have his faith in the system shattered by a series of events that transpire during an incursion into a neighboring country. His downward spiral begins when he learns that his injuries will prevent him from returning to duty. As he aimlessly wanders the streets of town where he is stationed, he is plagued by the memories of the atrocities he witnessed during his deployment. What follows is a repetitive rehashing of themes (arrogance, disillusionment, desperation, poverty) set against a backdrop of deserted streets, a rundown amusement park and increasingly frigid temperatures. A haunting work to say the least.For those learning German, the reading level is intermediate.

This is not a dry read about statistics because its authors take a very human approach with great respect that the game of baseball so richly deserves. I loved it!!

Montana baseball History By robert I enjoyed the book and it is a welcome addition to my baseball book collection.I did notice the omission of Taylor Tankersley who was born in Missoula according to Retrosheet and the 2007 Sporting News Baseball Register
