By Hilary Barhydt Frank Strauss has written a terrific history of the New York Mets. With a sportswriter's attention to facts and color and a sports fan's love of history and anecdotes, he has captured the spirit of the Mets. This is a fun book for any Mets fan. In addition to my own copy, I have given four or five copies to other Mets fans.

Those Championship Seasons By DS from LA As a lifelong Mets fan who greatly enjoyed Frank Strauss' earlier study of the 1947 Yankees ("Dawn of a Dynasty"), I was happy to see him giving equal time to the Mets in his latest book. Strauss meticulously and in straightforward prose recaps the Mets' four National League pennant-winning seasons (1969, 1973, 1986, and 2000), two of which culminated in World Series victories (with 1986 against the Boston Red Sox being one of the most memorable Series ever played). The story is told largely by the players, coaches, and managers through a combination of new interviews conducted by Strauss and media statements made at the time of the recounted events. Reading this book brought back great childhood memories (Tom Seaver was my first-ever sports hero), reminded me of some great players I hadn't thought about in years, and vividly recreated some events that are forever seared into my brain (Strauss' description of the I-still-can't-believe-it-happened 10th inning of Game 6 of the '86 Series merits special commendation). But this is no mere rehash of box scores; Strauss ably blends the thrilling play-by-play action with a touching and nostalgic elegy for the late Shea Stadium, as well as a palpable love and respect for the game of baseball.

A brief, chronological look at the Mets playoff history with some transitional chapters in between. Not a lot new and some real misses. No discussion of the 1973 game 6 decision to go with Seaver on short rest. No mention of Strawberry bring pulled from game 6 in 86. While you will learn the attendance at every home playoff game, what you won't get is any opinion or analysis of the critical decisions involved in each series or the subsequent roster moves as the team rebuilt over the years.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. For the horse lover By JP1 I admit that westerns are a guilty pleasure of mine. A place to go when I don't want to be where I am at the time. Max Brand's style of writing is classic western, hero's and villains, good guys and bad guys, wide open country, you get the point. This particular book requires a bit of horse knowledge to really work. The story is about an "outlaw" horse and it's relationship with man. If you know nothing about horses, or don't care for them a great deal, you may find some of the descriptions tedious or without meaning. On the other hand, horse lovers will find this fascinating. He captures the essence of that 'never really tame' element that is a part of such magnificent animals as well as that strange connection that some people get with certain horses. I highly recommend it and only deduct one star for the specificity of the topic.

It was very hard to get into at first, that my have been due to my lack of knowledge on horses and the old west. This book however deals with the trust of men and their animals really. As this horse Alcatraz is a horse who had been bread to race escapes his masters home and gets used to freedom. His escape comes at a terrible price though as he becomes known as a murderous beast and Marianne the new ranch owner wants him killed, but Alcatraz is a smart, tough an seems to be a magical horse, able to mystify his hunters that are unable to catch him. Marianne calls in the only man that can catch him Red Jim Perris, and at this point (nearly halfway through the book) is when the story picks up, nothing is straightforward in this book, the scenes with action are written quite well though.

I wanted a physical book, and this version exceeded my expectations. It is a beautiful format for a paperback, very high quality finish, larger than normal, and can easily grace a coffee table. It made a great gift. It was much cheaper in the Kindle version, but well worth the price for what I wanted. I may order another for myself, just because it is such a great horse story, besides being a "showpiece".
