This is a compilation of several autobiographical works and writings by some of history’s most famous actors. From the preface: A good play gives us in miniature a cross-section of life, heightened by plot and characterisation, by witty and compact dialogue. Of course we should honour first the playwright, who has given form to each well knit act and telling scene. But that worthy man, perhaps at this moment sipping his coffee at the Authors' Club, gave his drama its form only; its substance is created by the men and women who, with sympathy, intelligence and grace, embody with convincing power the hero and heroine, assassin and accomplice, lover and jilt. For the success of many a play their writers would be quick to acknowledge a further and initial debt, both in suggestion and criticism, to the artists who know from experience on the boards that deeds should he done, not talked about, that action is cardinal, with no other words than naturally spring from action. Players, too, not seldom remind authors that every incident should not only be interesting in itself, but take the play a stride forward through the entanglement and unravelling of its plot. It is altogether probable that the heights to which Shakespeare rose as a dramatist were due in a measure to his knowledge of how a comedy, or a tragedy, appears behind as well as in front of the footlights, all in an atmosphere quite other than that surrounding a poet at his desk. This little volume begins with part of the life story of Joseph Jefferson, chief of American comedians. Then we are privileged to read a few personal letters from Edwin Booth, the acknowledged king of the tragic stage. He is followed by the queen in the same dramatic realm, Charlotte Cushman. Next are two chapters by the first emotional actress of her day in America, Clara Morris. When she bows her adieu, Sir Henry Irving comes upon the platform instead of the stage, and in the course of his thoughtful discourse makes it plain how he won renown both as an actor and a manager. He is followed by his son, Mr. Henry Brodribb Irving, clearly an heir to his father's talents in art and in observation. Miss Ellen Terry, long Sir Henry Irving's leading lady, now tells us how she came to join his company, and what she thinks of Sir Henry Irving in his principal roles. The succeeding word comes from Richard Mansfield, whose untimely death is mourned by every lover of the drama. The next pages are from the hand of Tommaso Salvini, admittedly the greatest Othello and Samson that ever trod the boards. A few words, in closing, are from Adelaide Ristori, whose Medea, Myrrha and Phaedra are among the great traditions of the modern stage. From first to last this little book sheds light on the severe toil demanded for excellence on the stage, and reveals that for the highest success of a drama, author and artist must work hand in hand.

THE greatest of English dramatists except Shakespeare, the first literary dictator and poet-laureate, a writer of verse, prose, satire, and criticism who most potently of all the men of his time affected the subsequent course of English letters: such was Ben Jonson, and as such his strong personality assumes an interest to us almost unparalleled, at least in his age.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Challenging Reading, But Enjoyable - Comes in Two Versions By Michael Wischmeyer Every Man in His Humor was one of Ben Jonson's earliest plays. Although it is a somewhat obscure work today, remarkably, when first performed in 1598 by the Lord Chamberlain's Men, the cast included Shakespeare, Burbage, and Kemp. The term humor, derived from Latin word for fluid, refers to a Medieval and Renaissance medical theory that a man's health and personality were due to the balance (or imbalance) of four fluids, or humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile (choler), and black bile (melancholy). The Elizabethan audience would have recognized that Jonson's characters were caricatures of various temperaments and personalities.Jonson later significantly revised this play. The original 1601 quarto had a Florentine setting and Italian names. His revision, the 1616 folio version, substitutes a London setting with English characters. In my discussion below, I have noted the 1616 English characters using parenthesis.Every Man in His Humour was more challenging than I expected. I was into Act 2 before I began to appreciate the interplay between the characters. For me the turning point occurred when the servant Mosca (weirdly named Brainworm in the London version) disguised himself as a penniless soldier looking for charity. I gradually recognized four intertwined themes:1) Two young, high-spirited gentlemen, Lorenzo Junior (Edward Kno'well) and Prospero (Wellbred), deliberately encourage the foolish antics of other characters, quietly laughing at them in frequent asides.2) Meanwhile, Lorenzo Senior (Kno'well) worries that his son is mixing with less reputable acquaintances.3) Mosca (Brainworm) independently embarks on several zany ventures, all involving disguises, to assure that Lorenzo Junior (Edward Kno'well) is beholden to him.4) And lastly, the merchant Thorello (Thomas Kitely) mistakenly convinces himself that his wife Biancha (Dame Kitely) and his sister Hesperida (Mistress Budget) are being wooed by the foolish mix of characters that has descended upon his home. (Shakespeare may have derived the name Othello from Jonson's jealous Thorello.)I had difficulty keeping track of the numerous characters that wandered on and off the stage, reminding me of my first reading of Bartholomew Fair, a Jonson play with an even larger cast. The dialogue ranges from scholarly quotes in Latin to lower class slang. I found the footnotes to be helpful. Both the original 1601 play and Jonson's revised 1616 version make good reading. I had the good fortune to find a copy of a parallel text edition (Regents Renaissance Drama series by University of Nebraska Press) of the 1601 quarto and the 1616 folio of Every Man In His Humour. One last comment: Is it Humor or Humour? It makes a difference when conducting a title search.

The most indispensable poems of Brazil's greatest poetBrazil, according to no less an observer than Elizabeth Bishop, is a place where poets hold a place of honor. "Among men, the name of ‘poet' is sometimes used as a compliment or term of affection, even if the person referred to is . . . not a poet at all. One of the most famous twentieth-century poets, Manuel Bandeira, was presented with a permanent parking space in front of his apartment house in Rio de Janeiro, with an enamelled sign POETA―although he never owned a car and didn't know how to drive." In a culture like this, it is difficult to underestimate the importance of the nation's greatest poet, Carlos Drummond de Andrade. Drummond, the most emblematic Brazilian poet, was a master of transforming the ordinary world, through language, into the sublime. His poems―musical protests, twisted hymns, dissonant celebrations of imperfection―are transcriptions of life itself recorded by a magnanimous outcast. As he put it in his "Seven-Sided Poem": "When I was born, one of those twisted / angels who live in the shadows said: / ‘Carlos, get ready to be a misfit in life!' . . . World so wide, world so large, / my heart's even larger." Multitudinous Heart, the most generous selection of Drummond's poems available in English, gathers work from the various phases of this restless, brilliant modernist. Richard Zenith's selection and translation brings us a more vivid and surprising poet than we knew.

Review

"In new translations by Richard Zenith, we meet a sophisticated and cerebral poet who, true to this book's title, speaks in many registers. He is by turns melancholy and ironic, sentimental and self-deprecating, remote and boyish. . . .Mr. Drummond is worth encountering on the page."―The New York Times"One of Brazil’s most important poets."―Publishers Weekly

About the Author

Carlos Drummond de Andrade (1902–1987) was born in a small town in Minas Gerais. While he spent most of his life working as a government bureaucrat, he regarded poetry as his true vocation, and his first book was published in 1930. During six decades of writing, his work went through many phases, transcending styles and schools while being strongly influenced by modernism. Few critics or serious readers would dispute his status as Brazil's greatest poet. Richard Zenith lived in Brazil and France before immigrating to Portugal in 1987. He has translated the poetry of Luís de Camões, Fernando Pessoa, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, and João Cabral de Melo Neto.

Multifaceted By Mary Sayler In his home country of Brazil, Carlos Drummond de Andrade was lauded a great poet in his lifetime (1902-1987) with his poems reaching beyond borders, thanks first to John Nist then such well-known American poets as Elizabeth Bishop and, later, Mark Strand, who translated his work from Portuguese into English. Now, Richard Zenith has translated the poems in a new bilingual edition, Multitudinous Heart, published by Farrar Straus Giroux, who kindly sent me a copy to review for which I’m most grateful. Without this highly recommended book, I might never have discovered a new-for-me poet whose work I look forward to experiencing and reading again. For more, see the review of Multitudinous Heart: Selected Poems by Carlos Drummond de Andrade on the Poetry Editor & Poetry blog -http://thepoetryeditor.blogspot.com/2015/07/multitudinous-heart-selected-poems-by.html.

The poems in Strange Frontier are like eccentrically dressed visitors from foreign lands, evocative, complex, and amusing. They walk the road of struggle, meaning, darkness, and delight in new discovery. Eric Diamond is a psychotherapist with thirty years experience, husband, father, musician, and founder and director of the Gainesville Men’s Center. Diamond’s poems address staying sane in times of madness, making room for grief, and opening a door for the Divine. He invites you to enjoy yourself as he leaps about, exploring the mind and intellect while endeavoring to unshield the human heart.

An important voice By her review Galway Kinnell has described poetry as somebody standing up and saying, with as little concealment as possible, what it is for him or her to be on earth at this moment. Eric Diamond writes great poetry. I read my copy of this book in one soul-satisfying sitting, dogearing pages.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Memorable By cc2015 If I were to sum this collection of poetry up in one word, it would be "memorable." I love reading poetry collections, but this one really stood out to me. It is unique, refreshing, complex, and satisfying. One of my favorite things about Eric Diamond's poetry has to be his imagery. I found it to be incredibly vivid: from metaphors to similes to just plain old description, Diamond's words will bring you to the heart of the poem. He is a true wordsmith, and this is an amazing find.
