A Fine Playlist By Jane Perill I've been excited by very short fiction--small fictions as the editors of this wonderful collection call them--since reading Tara Masih's Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Flash Fiction. I actually pulled out my copy to reread Robert Olen Butler's instructive essay. The stories Butler has chosen, the smallest being an incredible 27 words, do not disappoint. They vary in subject, length, style, tone, and form and yet move together like a fine playlist of music. I didn't dance to all of them, but I was moved by most. A few, notably "Dead Gary," "Last Exit Before the Toll," "Word Cross," and "Shaping Air," will haunt me. An added bonus to being introduced to fine writers at the top of their game is learning about vibrant presses--online and print--that are doing the hard work of getting the work seen in the first place.

Writing that lives beyond the page By Teresa When I heard writer Moira Crone speak not long ago, in response to a question, she talked of how a novel is a journey, but a short story is about a moment. I'd started this book at the time, so I silently wondered if that meant "small fictions" are about less than a moment. My own belief (and I'm sure I stole it from somewhere) is that the best of (long) short stories live beyond the page, and that's even truer of shorter fiction. Not only have series editor Tara L. Masih, guest editor Robert Olen Butler and their staff done fans of small fictions a great service, rounding up the best of the past year so we don't have to hunt for them in the various journals they originally appeared in, but this inaugural volume will also be a great introduction for the curious. No one person will like every single story and that's a tribute to how varied this collection is. Flash fiction sometimes frustrates me: I don't always 'get' it; but that's also true of my relationship with poetry, and in many ways a small-fiction writer is a poet, the writer having to do so much more with less. I guarantee you there will be surprises: I inwardly groaned at the title of "Pistols at Twenty Paces: On the Last Recorded Duel in Hancock County, Mississippi, April 23, 1866", but this piece by Michael Garriga is probably my favorite -- a lesson to not only not judge a piece by its title, but probably not even to judge a short by its label.

Excellent introduction to "small" fictions By Susan Drees Other than occasional stories, this is the first collection of flash or small fiction I have read. And this has been an interesting, exciting, and, in some ways, educational experience. I'm learning that, as in so many other things in life, I have much more to learn about this story form, but I will not let that inhibit my enthusiastic review of this book. When I began reading, I had decided to use post it markers to mark those stories I enjoyed. Well, that didn't work as I quickly realized that I would run through my supply of markers. So I broke my book commandment and wrote in the book. Gasp! I am doing that more lately and feel the eyes of my early teachers scowling at me. But at the same time I believe they would be happy I am so invested in reading as an adult.I found that I enjoyed probably 3/4 of the stories in this book to one degree or another. Some I loved: The Garden Sky stands out in my mind and I will read that many more times. And Pistols at Twenty Paces, that took me back to another place and then left me thinking. What has amazed me is how much can be said so quickly, so economically. I also found that there were a couple of stories that I found difficult and actually off-putting but also had to respect for the skill of their presentation. My primary take away from the world of small fictions is that there will be much disagreement about what is good and what is skilled. These all show skill but they all grab people differently. And they have to grab quickly. How they do it will determine who will enjoy the story. So this is an odd form. I invite everyone I know to give it a try. I believe you will laugh, cry, shudder, become angry or possibly disgusted. All good appropriate human emotions. Honestly earned by these stories. I don't know which will be your favorites, though I'd love to compare notes.I fully intend to check out other works from several of the authors included. There are 55 fictions included, of which I liked 43 to some degree or other. Not bad. Perhaps I am under-rating this book; perhaps a 4.5 is in order. This is where ratings are so difficult.I heartily recommend this collection and also Butler's recommendation to read the stories a few at a time. That seemed to work well for me.I was provided with an ARC through the editor in return for an honest review.

On a dare, Sammy recites the age-old chant of "Bloody Mary" into a mirror with a roll of his eyes. Unexpectedly, his body is pulled through his own bathroom mirror the very next morning. What he doesn't understand is waking up in the woods, miserably wet and lost, right before dawn. Rourke has been living in the twilight for most of his life. Once a peaceful place full of light, the lands are now dark and dangerous; filled with monsters that are more than willing to kill any who cross their paths. There is still a small glimmer of hope to be found. Like all Illume that survived when the mists fell over the lands, the self-trained swordsman is making his way to the Last City. Things change drastically when he rescues an Other from some Wolves, one of the bloodthirsty monsters in the dark. Sammy is nothing but trouble. He's annoying, argues with Rourke, and asks the most stupid questions. There is something about the Other that the swordsman just can't seem to figure out and decides to bring Sammy along with him. Together, making their way through the darkness, they follow the light.

By Interested Reader Ashen Light is a different kind of story that delves into horror, humor, and adventure. I personally enjoyed how the author used many different story telling elements to paint the characters and the sometimes scary situations they tend to encounter. At some parts of the book, I felt anxious with worry while at other parts I found myself laughing. This interesting story dynamic made the book fresh to read the whole time. Each character was unique and had to identify with overcoming struggle which really helps the reader to understand them and their motives as they overcome their adversities. In the end this was a quick, light read that was fun and intriguing the whole time I read it. Solid book.

It has a lot of atmosphere with some scenes that are genuinely scary. It never goes too far into horror, but I was often left anxiously waiting to see what would happen next and how the two main characters would make it through. I really love the characters too. They are so different and their interactions allows a little humor to come through, yet I felt very connected to both of them. However, I think Sammy is my favorite because his father's attitude toward his gender reminds me of my family. I really wanted him to be happy, and I felt like the author really understood how painful it is to have to deal with family that doesn't support your identity. There is no doubt I will be reading this book again. The ending had me in tears, and I can't wait to hear if there will be a sequel. It was very enjoyable light reading, and I think it's a perfect story to pick up on a weekend off.

When two young men; one from this world, and one from another; meet under very strange circumstances, an unlikely relationship commences. As they learn and grow together during their travels, the characters evolve in a tantalizing way! The descriptive manner of this author is captivating and picturesque in your mind's eye! The storyline will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting more! You will definitely want to add this book to your favorites collection!

By alwaysbooking 5 “I’ve got this” stars!!Reading a Jill Shalvis book is like eating a whole pan of brownies without the calorie guilt! you get all the good feelings with no negative effects to your thighs!!! I have never met a Jill Shalvis book I didn’t like. I don’t think I ever will! Her characters are chopped full of real life quirks. You never know what kind of situations her heroes or heroines will get into.Zoe has this constant saying throughout the book and it’s “I got this”. She has had to be everyone’s everything for so long, now that her siblings are finally on track she starts to do things for herself. First off she wants to find a man so of course the book starts off with Zoe going on a blind date with a dentist. She decides to be daring and bold and kiss the dentist after she opens the door. However it’s not the dentist she kisses its her brother’s best friend Parker. She has never met Parker before this moment but Wyatt talked her into letting him stay with her while he’s in town. Of course this tension between them is broken by her dog Oreo (whom I loved). Oreo doesn’t like men however when Parker shows up he climbs all over him. You should always take hints from your pets about people, they are good judges of character. Not only does Zoe have to live with the incredibly attractive Parker while he’s on “vacation” she is technically working with him by flying him over some interesting areas in Idaho. She is fighting her attraction for him. Zoe keeps repeating to herself that he isn’t staying but of course her heart doesn’t want to believe it. I mean seriously how is she supposed to resist a man who kisses and rescues kittens for goodness sakes. I really enjoyed Jill Shalvis throwing in the beginning with Oreo about how he rolls in bear poop. Reminds me of another dog… maybe Jill’s dog?? that was so funny.Parker is chasing bad guys. These bad guys do not play nice they will use anyone or anything against him. So far he has stayed pretty well hidden. His attraction to his roommate Zoe is immediate, however he’s not going to let anyone distract him from catching this bad guy. Technically Parker is on leave after being run over literally by the bad guys. He’s gotten orders from higher ups that he’s not to go after this guy. So as a normal stubborn man what does he do…. he goes after the guy. For some reason he finds himself actually being honest with Zoe. The only thing he fibs to her about is the home improvements he’s doing while she’s at work. It’s so funny when she starts realizes he’s doing this. Then he “saves” some kittens.. big tough guy saves tiny kittens insert *swoon* here.I really enjoyed this book, it was almost like they were a married couple before they were a couple. They lived together they worked together always around each other. They raised the dog together then the kittens. I loved how she was attempting to date while he was living with her. The old lady dress is a classic, I feel it should be like the sisterhood of the traveling pants and go to the next lucky lady in line! Parker’s sister Armory was a delight I hope she comes to visit them soon. I really hope to see this couple in the future animal magnetism books. All of these books can be read as standalone books even though previous characters come into play. :)

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. It delivers on every level ~ great story, suspense, sex, humor and characters that are simply irresistible. By CABorgford Zoe, Zoe, Zoe … I love her. Like pack her up and keep her in my pocket lovvvvvveeee her. She is just the right amount of silly, sweet, smart and sassy. It’s easy to see how she kept Darcy and Wyatt on track in their younger years. Zoe is struggling to re-enter the dating pool. With her siblings finally out from underneath her she has run out of excuses for not putting herself first. Sounds easy right? Not so much. Ms. Shalvis brings in her trademark humor and sets Zoe on a course of unfortunate encounters that will leave you in stitches.Parker is giving Adam a run for his money in the sexiest AM Man contest. Yum, yum, double yum. I wanted to relive each and every one of his delectable smiles. Where Zoe seems like an open book, Parker is a mystery. As their story progresses I saw Parker evolve. Tears, fur and snow all point to Parker’s huge heart. I thought his backstory was timed and developed perfectly. When personal relationships and work further entwine Parker and Zoe, they are faced with hard decisions. Do they follow their hearts into the unknown or do they continue on the path that has always come easy to them. You’ll have to read to find out. It’s a testament to Shalvis’ writing that the adorable Oreo and Bonnie and Clyde don’t completely steal the show. Her use of animals as secondary characters is brilliant. Their presence is always propelling the story and revealing traits about the characters effortlessly. All I Want is a must read. It delivers on every level ~ great story, suspense, sex, humor and characters that are simply irresistible.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Hi, my name is Yvette and I'm obsessed with Jill Shalvis... By Yvette Is All I Want really the last book in Jill Shalvis’s Animal Magnetism series? It wasn’t too long ago that I binge-read the first six books in the series back-to-back so to say I’m not ready for the series to end is a massive understatement. The small-town charm of Sunshine, Idaho and the quirky characters (animals included) that inhabit it are what make this series so engaging. While I’d love to continue the journey with these characters in this setting for another dozen or so books, I was thrilled to see the series end on a high note with Zoe and Parker’s story in All I Want. Watching the stubbornly independent Zoe go toe to toe with the irresistibly charismatic Parker is so entertaining, it’s impossible not to fall in love with these characters. As a fan of the series, I’ve been waiting for Zoe’s story, eager to see who could be a perfect match for the tough-as-nails pilot. Zoe is a heroine that I immediately liked, yet the more I got to know her, exploring her guardedness and unveiling her vulnerabilities, the more I connected with her character. She is a fascinating mix of strong and vulnerable, self-assured and awkward, and I loved the fact that Parker challenges her with every word exchanged and every interaction. Parker is the kind of confident that makes you want to roll your eyes after every outrageous remark, even while his unerring charm has you fighting back a smile. They have this Katherine Hepburn-Carey Grant type of banter, each with the distinct ability to exasperate the other with a few choice words, yet at the same time, it's evident that they're wildly attracted to each other. Their dynamic brought a fast-paced energy to the story that captivated me from start to finish. With action, adventure, an unforgettable romance, and two characters with emotionally compelling backstories, All I Want is the perfect conclusion to the Animal Magnestism series. I laughed, I cried, I swooned (because: hot), and mostly, I wished it wouldn't end. No matter how many books I read by Jill Shalvis, I can't seem to get enough and All I Want is no exception. There's a feeling her books evoke – a feeling of lightheartedness and contentment so magical that you can’t help but want to recapture it again and again. I love knowing that when I pick up a new book by this author, it's going to become an instant favorite and there aren't many authors I can't say that about.*complimentary copy provided by author in exchange for an honest review

Fiction. Jewish Studies. Winegarden recounts episodes in the life of Jacob Winegarden, an agnostic Jewish professor of theoretical physics whose speciality is 'thought experimentation.' A burly, vague, distracted man, a fan of popular films such as Toy Story and Fantastic Voyage, Jacob is still forlornly infatuated with his enigmatic wife, Miriam. She brings him back to reality: he is in a world of his own, she says, but there are things that need doing in this one. Moving backwards and forwards in time, the book touches on different parts of Winegarden's life and thoughts, and tells a larger personal story of grief and survival, the ambivalence and persistence of love, and the meaning of being Jewish.

Sometimes one and sometimes the other. Like light it exists in two forms simultaneously. The book is about the life of a Jewish prof whose endless thought experiments deal with uncertainty both at the level of quantum physics and life in general. This short novel is suffused with 'angst', very much of the Jewish variety!Well-written, this brief book is worth reading, maybe not as quickly as I did, but its pace is such that it does not encourage slow reading.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Winegarden is a beautifully written novella By Amazon Customer Winegarden is a beautifully written novella. Its subject matter - the exploration of the complicated life of a theoretical physicist (Jacob Winegarden) - might not seem the most appealing, however, slowly but surely one is sucked into a sensitive and compelling account of Winegarden's relationship with his wife, work, lost child and father, and ultimately himself. Throughout, the book compels one to reflect on one's own humanity and frailties. This is Ferner's first novel. It's a most impressive debut.

For twenty years, I believe I am right in saying, you, as Assistant Secretary for Native Affairs in Natal, and in other offices, have been intimately acquainted with the Zulu people. Moreover, you are one of the few living men who have made a deep and scientific study of their language, their customs and their history. So I confess that I was the more pleased after you were so good as to read this tale—the second book of the epic of the vengeance of Zikali, "the Thing-that-should-never-have-been-born," and of the fall of the House of Senzangakona[*]—when you wrote to me that it was animated by the true Zulu spirit.

It happens so that Allan Quatermain stops by his Zulu friend's kraal (to those of you who never read Haggard, Kraal=household) to find that yet another friend is madly in love with the well known beauty: Mameena, or, in other words, Child of the Storm. Allan is curious to see this well known Mameena, but his friend who is in love with Mameena (his name is Saduko) goes on a crazy battle to win 100 cattle for Mameena's dowry. After going with Saduko on his quest and helping him win 600 cattle, Allan meets Mameena, and determines she is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen, and, though at that time Africans were thought of as savages (most unjustly, I have to add), Allan, after observing some treachery done by Mameena while pretending to be unconscious, after knowing she was false, cannot find any reason to resist her love to him, for indeed Mameena tries to engage him in a marriage, but Allan remembers her treachery and tells her no. Many adventures follow after that, until the Zulu King declares Mameena a witch, and Mameena pleads guilty. It is not the kind of Salem witchcraft that is talked about here. It is more like herb-knowledge and doctoring that the Zulus call witchcraft. After recieving her death sentence for many more offenses, including causing a civil war and it's outcome, Mameena makes a last wish. The last wish is... You'll have to figure out this as you read along with the mystery of Mameena's character. Suggested background books: Any Allan Quatermain book. Here are some Allan Quatermain titles: Allan and the Holy Flower, Marie, Allan's Wife, King Solomon's Mines, She and Allan, The Ancient Allan, Et cetera.

Let him lead your eyes around this canvas set in Africa complete with multi-dimensional characters who will both attract and repel. Be prepared for the depiction of tribal wisdom and folly sketched within and without.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. First 5 given for an adventure fiction author By Book lover My bar is high when it comes to ratings. I try to compare all authors of all times. HR Haggard is at the top of the adventure fiction genre. He takes the reader into the unstable history of Africa where indiginous tribes, english, dutch and portugese settlers carved out a continent still in flux today. Haggard brings characters from all these groups to life with a realism rarely found. As described by the other reviewers this story is 2nd in a series. The books take the reader through the Zulu tribes violent history with the addition of fictional characters full of adventure, passion and commitment. This is a cannot stop reading book in a cannot stop reading series by a cannot stop reading author .

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Compendium of volleyball knowledge By P. Wung This is the second Volleyball Coaching Bible. Unlike the first one, the emphasis of this book is on the more advanced aspects of coaching. Basic skills and concepts of indoor volleyball play had been covered earlier in Volleyball Coaching Bible I. The four main areas of coverage are: Coaching priorities, Program Building and Management, Positional Training Strategies, and Match Preparation and Strategies. The segregation of subjects is rational and welcomed, as the audience for this book is the advanced beginner to intermediate level coaches. Their knowledge of the game is more advanced and their initial obsession with drill collecting and command and control of the team has subsided. their focus now turns to some more complex and involved topics. The lead off chapter by John Kessel is an excellent way to motivate the coaches. It gives a short history of the sport and it gives the reader a very unique and refreshing view of coaching. The chapter is full of ideas on how to get around limitations, both in terms of resources and in terms of physical space. One excellent characteristic of both Volleyball Coaching Bibles is that the authors are all experienced and credentialed practitioners in the subject that they are speaking to. Chris Catanach, Randy Dagostino, Charlie Sullivan, Shelton Collier, Bill Neville, Salima Rockwell, et. al. are all veteran coaches and administrators well experienced in their respective topic areas. The problem that I had, and the only reason that I did not give the book a five star rating , it that even though the topics are well chosen, each topic constitute wells of significant depth, some are deeper than others but each topic is capable of generating a book by itself. It is very difficult to adequately discuss and inform the audience on every nuance and subtlety associated with every topic. For example, there are already books written on mindsets and on deliberate practices, a short chapter does not do justice to the depth and breadth of some topics. In a manner of speaking, the authors were attempting to facilitate the reader in their task to drink from a fire hydrant: it was an impossibility.Yet, for as impossible a task as the authors were given, the book does introduce the topic to the reader. I hope that the reader is motivated to continue their education beyond this important but incomplete compendium of chapters, to further their coaching education by researching and reading further about some of these topics. In the end, this is a valuable and well intended tome of great amount of coaching knowledge.

Received a copy in exchange for honest review.I began reading this book with absolute zero knowledge about the sport. However, The Volleyball Coaching Bible was quick to make an impression on me, especially since the pages are filled with so much detail and pratical information from knowledgeable coaches of the AVCA, from team formation to statistics. Though in general the book is great, it has one major mistake: this should be made into a specific book of volleyball tactics, not short chapters on different subjects since I thought it was not definite enough, personally.

Integrating all aspects of Volleyball, including early, high-school, and college play, this guide provides not only lessons, strategies, preparation and organization, but also practical knowledge in mentoring, teamwork, and life in general. In such comprehensive manner, it lives up to its title, though such association of sports with aspects of religion may raise some eyebrows! A must read for anyone serious about Volleyball and team sport.A Goodreads First Reads book received.

Killing My Noise is a collaboration of prose and poetry. This first collection makes up the skeletal figure of the monster that I believe lives beneath all of our skins. It portrays a weaving, unattractive story of its birth, its self recognition, and the path that it must bore when we allow our darkness to find its way out.
