"I want something to do." This remark being addressed to the world in general, no one in particular felt it their duty to reply; so I repeated it to the smaller world about me, received the following suggestions, and settled the matter by answering my own inquiry, as people are apt to do when very much in earnest. "Write a book," quoth the author of my being. "Don't know enough, sir. First live, then write." "Try teaching again," suggested my mother.

Hospital Sketches, by Louisa May Alcott

About the Author American novelist Louisa May Alcott is best known for her classic coming-of-age novel Little Women, and its sequels Little Men and Jo s Boys. The daughter of noted transcendentalist and educator Amos Bronson Alcott and Abigail May Alcott, Alcott was an active abolitionist and feminist, and the first woman registered to vote in Concord, Massachusetts. Schooled mainly by her father, Alcott and her three sisters also received lessons from such notables as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Margaret Fuller. Alcott penned her first book, Flower Fables, for Emerson s daughter, Ellen. Before gaining critical success for her children s fiction, Alcott wrote several passionate adult novels using the pen name A. M. Barnard, including A Long Fatal Love Chase and Punishment. Alcott s literary career spanned more than 40 years, and she wrote more than 30 books before her death in 1888.

By A Customer Louisa May Alcott was the first Civil War army nurse to publish an account of her service. Not yet famous at the author of "Little Women," the appearence of "Hospital Sketches" in the summer of 1863 was the also the first of her works to win her widespread attention.Bored with life at home and wanting to contribute something to the war effort, Alcott volunteered to serve as an nurse. After a wait of several months, she was assigned to the Union Hotel Hospital in Washington DC. She arrived in mid-December, and her very first day brought her responsibility for forty patients when another nurse fell ill. It was a sign of things to come. Three days after her arrival, the hospital was flooded with wounded from the Battle of Fredericksburg. Initially horrified at the idea of giving the wounded sponge baths, Alcott quickly overcame this misplaced modesty and became accoustomed to the sights and sounds of the the ward. By the end of her brief service, she had learned how to feed, bathe and comfort the wounded, change dressings and administer medicine. . .even watch amputations without revulsion. It was as the night nurse on a three-room ward that she found the vivid charachters she would bring to life in "Hospital Sketches." There was a little Ohio sargent she called "Baby B," who had lost his right arm in battle and was teaching himself to write left handed. (He would later become one of her faithful correspondents) There was a 12-year old drummer mourning the loss of a buddy, a helpful Prussian who spoke no English, and a nameless man so addled by war that he was given to running up and down the aisles yelling all night long. Most poingant was the story of John, a Virginia blacksmith whose death was a model of the 19th Century Christian ideal. Only six weeks after she arrived in Washington, Alcott fell dangerously ill with typhoid fever. Doctors wrote her parents, and before long her father had arrived to take her home. She would spend months recovering. Given a mercury-based compound common in the treatment of typhoid, she would suffer the effects of mercury poisioning for the rest of her life. She was still confined to bed when she began writing "Hospital Sketches." As "Nurse Tribulation Periwinkle" -- a name adopted under the dictum that a lady's name should not appear in print -- the short book illustrated the flair for charachterization and the delightful sense of humor that would make her later works so popular.

Hospital Sketches By Stephen Balbach In 1863, in the midst of the American Civil War, women military nurses were considered a novelty; fears were of harming their "naturally weak nature" and fraternizing with men. But it was a role successfully pioneered by Florence Nightingale in the Crimea War, and the Union was looking for all the help it could get. Before she became a famous novelist with Little Women, upbeat and adventurous 30 year old Boston native Louisa May Alcott volunteered at a Union hospital in Washington DC. During her intern of 6 weeks she was able to help soldiers wounded at The Battle of Fredericksburg. She wrote a series of letters home vividly describing what a Civil War hospital was like, and the many characters who made up the patients and staff. The letters display a keen sense of humor and observation that would become her hallmark. A short book but highly engaging and fascinating for the quality of writing, the drama of life and death, historical detail, and Alcott's infectious optimism, humor and strength. This is a short book of about 93 pages easily read in a day, but filled with memorable scenes of humor, love, pain and horror.

It tells of many wounded soldiers that Louisa actually met in her nursing period at the Georgetown Hospital. It tells of Sergeant Bane and his "Dearest Jane", Doctor P., the 'quiet sleeper', who "would like a drink of water, if you ain't too busy", Billy, Kit, and many others. The only things that I didn't absolutly love about "Hospital Sketches was the font, which was difficult to read, and the fact that Louisa herself isn't the exact main character, name and all. However, Nurse Periwinkle, who replaces Louisa, is an almost carbon copy of Alcott, so I can't really complain. People just don't write books that are as good and as true as this anymore. As I said in my title, this is a truly vivid account of the wounded men and the nurses in the Civil War.

While earning her M.D. at Harvard, Klass contributed articles to "Mademoiselle" and "The New York Times" as well as to scientific and medical journals. By Saske Uchiha I wanted to read this book because I was interested in how training can have a impact on playing a sport. With all the science and methods that are now available, it can be hard to really focus and train correctly. A sport requires a lot of physical attributes that can help a person play well. The book hosts a series of chapters that discuss different components of training. Some aspects include weight training, balancing, vision training, and has a chapter devoted to physical tests. The book really helps you target your weaknesses and tells you how to train smart and effectively. I think this book shows that a person can benefit from knowing more. There is always more to learn and seeking advice on something that can really help.

Memories of Broken Souls, by christopher Leonidas

Review The writing's overall substance is very deep, yet understandable. Even readers who are not familiar with poetry will feel the emotions the writer is conveying. The feelings seem to come from one or more authority figures, who in their career made life-changing judgments on others, thinking they were doing the right thing for many, then one day waking up and feeling regret, guilt, fear, sorrow, and more regret.     Lee Ann, editor, Firstediting

From the Back Cover After days and nights of lugubrious moments spent under the claw of hurtful memories, I endeavored with all my soul and the strength of my left hand to hold a piece of blank paper to pen my Memories of Broken Souls. As I wrote, I felt each teardrop that slid down the cheeks of my shame, piercing always my heart. Describing the failures and wrongdoings of myself and my former friends that had led to such selfishness, the worst was facing myself in the mirror, reflecting these memories that still are, and perhaps forever will be, trapped within me. These stories make my breathing shallow, and I still become agitated as the flashbacks trigger. Yet, now they have pushed me to make a positive difference by helping people. The events I describe have had a direct impact on the messages I hope to send through this book.  The writer brings us from the deepest despair to bearable anguish to workable grief.                                                                                                          - Lee Ann, editor, Firstediting

Huge applause for this wonderful creation By Anna steven This non-fiction, narrative poetry book is truly interesting and it has filled with plenty of dark shadows which describe sorrowful memories. When I’m reading this, my heart melted like a candle. Sometimes tear drops slipped through my eyes. Believe me, I really enjoyed it. I love poetries. After knowing about this book, I didn’t think twice to buy it. Rather I enjoyed each and every line of all poetries. I’m pretty sure Christopher will be able to touch millions of hearts of his fans through this novel creation. Most importantly, this poetry book is delighted by the author through his life experiences, sorrowful incidents, cheerful footings, strong bonds and more other things. Christopher Leonidas is multi-talented because he writes crime stories with full of blood as well as he creates sensitive, emotional and realistic poetries. I highly recommend glorious creation.

I needed something dark, yet emotionally appealing and I stumbled across this collection of poems. After reading the author bio and the description, I decided to give this book a chance and i'm very glad I did. The very dark poems are filled with sadness, but afterwards comes an appreciation of the art work. You can truly feel what message the author is trying to convey in each poem while he takes you on an emotional journey.

By Kevin Lintner "Memories of a Broken Soul" is a dark literary bit of brilliance that takes the hardships of everyday life and translates them into something quite wonderful. When I read that the author is an active duty US Marine, at first I was taken back because of the deeply personal way that Leonidas bears his soul to the reader. I never equated the USMC with this kind of creativity and prowess. In this case it is very nice to know that I was wrong. Leonidas' is amazing.

The great American naturalist John James Audubon is best known for his beautiful drawings of birds, collected in The Birds of America (1827-1838). The five-volume Ornithological Biography, a companion to the collection of drawings, was published in 1831 and includes this essay on the now-extinct passenger pigeon. In it, Audubon describes the bird's remarkable power of flight, power of vision, and hard-to-believe abundance. As he writes of a flock numbering more than one billion birds, a flock so large it darkens the noonday sky, Audubon says, "The multitudes of Wild Pigeons in our woods are astonishing. Indeed, after having viewed them so often, and under so many circumstances, I even now feel inclined to pause, and assure myself that what I am going to relate is fact." Most astonishing of all is the fact that the passenger pigeon became extinct in the wild by 1900. The last known individual was a female named Martha, who died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914. This short work is part of Applewood's "American Roots" series, tactile mementos of American passions by some of America's most famous writers and thinkers.

"About 20 years ago my wife and I discovered, in a secret drawer in a lap desk owned by my wife’s great-grandmother, a collection of fragile bird’s eggs swaddled in fluffy ivory cotton. We dare not open it again, for risk of cracking an egg. But in the drawer may lie powerful connections, not just to those who came before us, but to entire species lost. And what if one of these were the egg of a passenger pigeon, collected and preserved? It is not inconceivable that great grandmother’s great grandmother, living in Philadelphia, might have spent many days in darkness as a billion or so passenger pigeons flew by. And now there are none." ―Phil Zuckerman, Publisher

“Blind? I think there’s no doubt that Marla Runyan can see things much clearer than most of us with 20/20 vision.” ―Lance Armstrong

Marla Runyan was nine years old when she was diagnosed with Stargardt’s disease, an irreversible form of macular degeneration. With the uneasy but unwavering support of her parents, she refused to let her diagnosis limit her dreams. Despite her severely impaired, ever-worsening vision, Marla rode horseback and learned to play the violin. And she found her true calling in sports.

A gifted and natural athlete, Marla began to compete in the unlikeliest event of all: the heptathlon, the grueling women’s equivalent of the decathlon, consisting of seven events: the 200-meter dash, high jump, shot put, 100-meter hurdles, long jump, javelin throw, and 800-meter run. In 1996, she astonished the sports world by qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials and, along the way, set the American record for heptathlon 800. It was then that she decided to concentrate on her running. Four years of intense effort paid off. In 2000, she qualified for the U.S. Olympic team by finishing third in the 1,500 meters. In Sydney, she placed eighth in the finals, the top American finisher―the highest women’s placing for the United States in the event’s history.

With self-deprecation and surprising wit, Marla reveals what it’s like to see the world through her eyes, how it feels to grow up “disabled” in a society where expectations are often based on perceived abilities, and what it means to compete at the world-class level despite the fact that―quite literally, for her―there is no finish line.

From Publishers Weekly "My whole life was `special.' I rode a `special' bus, went to a school with a `special' program.... But I wasn't special, I was angry," observes Olympic runner Runyan. Rendered partially blind by Stargardt's disease, Runyan tells the story of her trials en route to the Olympics. Growing up embarrassed by her condition and all the more headstrong for it, Runyan set and achieved high goals to compensate for a lonely and painful childhood, tackling horseback riding and first violin before she turned to track and field. (She obtained her driver's license a bit later.) In 2000, she was the first American to finish the women's 1,500 meter race, coming in eighth the highest U.S. women's placement in the history of the event. But at the heart of her story is an allegory of change: she outgrows coaches, learns patience over perseverance and comes to understand that her greatest stumbling block is her own willful approach. Thankfully, the book never waxes maudlin like the many oft-aired inserts during the 2000 Olympic Games where every athlete competed not only in their event but also for the most-outrageous-life-challenge award. Rather, she presents her story with acuity and grace, rising above expectations and prejudice ("Do you ever fall down?" is a question journalists frequently ask). Written with Sally Jenkins who collaborated on Lance Armstrong's autobiography, It's Not About the Bike, Runyan's story is well-paced and finishes strong; readers will hope she keeps going and going.

By A Customer I'm not legally blind, but I could really understand it and identify with the struggles she endured in being different throughout most of her life. The writing style is so engaging and easy to read that it feels almost like conversation. Just when you have a question, the answer appears. Marla's dry wit is refreshing and intelligent. There is no pity party here!Marla has really struggled in life and sport. She continues to learn and perservere as a person and athlete and that is what makes a champion in life and on the track. I can't wait to see her medal in Athens at the next summer olympics. I'm a better person and athlete after reading her story.
