Right book right time By TANIA KELLY ROXBOROGH Note: At the end of this review is a disclaimer.I took this book on a journey (to see my mother) not knowing that it would resonate so sharply and the story would challenge me in real time as I navigated that tricky mother-daughter dance so cleverly written (and with a light hand) in the account of Artemis as she meets her Greek family (those alive and those who have died but whose voice still demanded to be heard). I knew almost nothing of Greece, of Crete, of the history (only that my father-in-law fought on Crete during WW2 and what I had gleaned from television programmes and movies). Rainey-Smith doesn't make assumptions of what the reader may or may not know; she doesn't bog the narrative in too much history but provides lots and lots of 'tasters'. I plan to go and brush up on my ancient Greece history and find out about the Greek civil war. As a result of these wee snippets dropped gently into the story.I like a novel which teaches me about the human condition and the history and geography of a place and time as well as one which makes me smile or makes me sad. In other words: engages my head and my heart. The Daughters of Messene did this for me with the bonus of brilliant writing. I LOVE great writing. Here are two of my favourite phrases:'Just like that, they were dividing her mother up, measuring her out with coffee spoons for distribution between two hemispheres.'; and,'the sky clotted with men and their parachutes.'Highly recommended.Disclaimer: I first 'met' Maggie Rainey-Smith through one of her poems which I 'stumbled upon' when reading another's blog. I 'met' her again by reading her reviews on Graham Beattie's blog (...). I loved her reviews; read first one, then another of her recommended books and so decided I trusted her opinion. I sought out more of 'online Maggie': her own blog: (...)Then, as is often the way nowadays with blogs and Facebook, we became 'Facebook friends', getting to know one another through shared friends, comments and other writing long before we met in the real world. I say this all to out myself as someone who now counts Maggie as a friend but I believe we found each other first through a mutual love of writing and because I was drawn to her own skill.

However if you wish to experience something totally original, something bridging the world but based in personal experience, with words that resonate like kantades, then buy this book.

A Collection of Tales Loved By Frances Hodgson Burnett By Terrie Frances Browne, the author of this enchanting and original collection of fairy tales lived between 1816 and 1879. She was blinded by smallpox when she was a baby and so all of the vivid descriptions in this charming book are from her own memory of the tales that she heard as a child and from her colorful imagination. In 1904 Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote an introduction for a new edition of the book because as a little child she had won a copy of it as a prize for good behavior in school. It became her favorite book but was lost to her over the years. She searched high and low for it and it eventually surfaced in Boston and again in a second hand shop in London. This edition contains the introduction by Burnett that is certainly an added treat. It is brilliantly illustrated by Switzerland's Gisele Rime with her characteristic bright colors and whimsical decorative borders. Unlike other collections of fairy tales these are completely original and bring us new characters and plots with gentle moral lessons. The fame of Frances Browne may not approach the Grimms or Andersen but the beauty and cleverness of her tales will enchant and delight you just the same. Perhaps snuggling into her favorite chair when you were too tired to possibly do anything else? Do you recall the comfort, the smell, the feel, the total release of 'Grandma's' chair? This was one my of favorite 'escape' books as a child. I would curl up in 'Granny's Wonderful Chair' and be transported to many a wonderous place. I have searched for many years for this title, and was so excited to see it unearthed for republishing! We will be reading it aloud as a family now. Granny's Wonderful Chair is a great addition not only to your library, but to you and your children's memory's as well!

A wonderful collection of creative and pleasing stories By Molly Grue Young Snowflower lives with her grandmother, Dame Frostyface, in a little cottage at the edge of a forest. The two are very poor, and own only a cat, two hens, a bed of dried grass, and one good piece of furniture: "a great armchair with wheels on its feet, a black velvet cushion, and many curious carvings of flowers and fawns on its dark oaken back."One day, Dame Frostyface leaves to visit her aunt, and asks Snowflower to remain behind. She tells the girl that the fancy armchair was made by a cunning fairy, and that it is enchanted. If Snowflower should feel lonely, she should lay her head gently on the cushion of the armchair and say, "Chair of my grandmother, tell me a story. Should Snowflower have the occasion to travel, she should sit in the chair and say, "Chair of my grandmother, take me such a way."After an interval of solitude, Snowflower's food stores are nearly depleted, so she decides to travel in the armchair along the same path her grandmother took. While journeying, she hears that King Winwealth plans to give a seven day feast to celebrate the birth of his only daughter, Princess Greedalind. Jonathan Kemp has created a story that is both haunting and beautiful. His exploration of the human mind and the way that his lead character Grace's mind is affected by her grief and loss is so powerful.Grace is an elderly lady who sees the ghost of her first husband. Seeing Pete's image brings back vivid, painful and terrifying memories and it is not until she sees the ghost again that she realises that it is not Pete's spirit, but a real man; Luke.Luke looks so like Pete that Grace becomes consumed by her memories and by her present situation and makes the decision to change her life completely. The reader is treated to flash backs from Grace's life, we are taken back to her youth, the heady days of the late 1950s in Blackpool when she and Pete first met. As the novel progresses, we accompany Grace through the pain of her marriage to Pete and learn more about the loss, suffering and heartbreak that she has coped with during her life.Mental illness, death, grief, loss and despair are the themes that run through Ghosting, and although these are dark and serious issues, the novel does at times, contain glints of black humour and lots of insight,Grace finds herself caught up with people and in places that are totally alien to her, she encounters new ways of thinking and of living. Must Read Melancholy Romance By Bubba_Holtzkopf Wow...This book had me saying wow early on, and perhaps this was the first sign that I was in the presence of significant literature. Basically, George Eliot (literature buffs know this is Mary Anne Evans) strikes you in 'The Lifted Veil' immediately with a somber punch worthy of Edgar Allen Poe, followed by drama, romance, and a hint of the mystic. The tone remains constant in it's dark mood, but this did little to dampen my enthusiasm as a reader. Already this book has climbed into my top 20 short stories involving romance.I really would hate to spoil your reading of this great tale with spoilers, but suffice it to say the allusion of the title is referring to the marital veil primarily, and not the veil of death, although that could be also intended on a lesser note. So, basically, I would consider this a great read for anyone ever contemplating marriage, as a cautionary tale. It really does have some good insight into that, as well as the 'pecking order' of family relationships.Overall, a period romance with a very personal, very somber, slightly mystic and very male feel to it, which distinguishes it greatly.Highly recommended.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A Gothic parable about love By Israel Drazin This short book, which amazon gives free to kindle owners, was composed by George Elliot (1819-1880). A shy rich man with a weak, sickly, poetical nature expects to die very soon from a heart condition in 1850. He doesn't expect any of his three servants to respond to his bell for help because he understand people and knows that they are involved in their own affairs. He uses these moments alone to tell his life story. He realized that he had unique abilities when he was young. He had visions of the future, what people will do and say, long before they do or say it. He also had the gift of insight. He could understand people's character and pierce the veil of their faces and false conduct. Yet, he couldn't understand Bertha for many years. Bertha was a thin and beautiful girl, a year older than he, with whom he fell in love. She could be charming. Yet, she was self-centered, negative, heartless, satirical, sarcastic, opinionated, vain, and loved power, but he saw none of this. He was nineteen and she twenty. She was engaged to his brother who was twenty-six. She admitted to him that she didn't love his brother. But he was in ecstasy with her and saw no faults. He even ignored a vision that he was married to her and she mistreated him. His brother died in an accident and he married Bertha without knowing if she loved him, although she said she did. After some years of marriage, when his father died, he was suddenly able to see what his wife Bertha truly was, that she despised him. Then life became unbearable, as he foresaw in his vision. He noticed a strange relationship between Bertha and her servant. Then, when the servant was dying, his friend, a doctor, told him that the servant would expire that night and asked for permission from him to insert blood into her artery after she died to see what happens. She died, the blood was inserted, she came back to life, turned to Bertha, who just entered the room, and yelled at her, "You mean to poison your husband...the poison is in the black cabinet...I got it for you." Then she died again, and he separated from Bertha after dividing his property with her, equally. Reflecting back at the servant's resurrection, he asks, "Is this what it is to live again...to wake up with our unsatiated thirst upon us, with our unuttered curses rising to our lips, with our muscles ready to act out their half committed sins?" Can this story be read as a parable, a commentary on marriage, that men are unable to unveil the character of their wives' feelings, even though they can understand other people, that love blinds?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Strange By Katie Prestwich This is a short story and is very different from anything else I've read of George Eliot's. It's a little bit of a horror story with no characters to truly like. The feeling of it reminds me of The Picture of Dorian Gray.

About the Author Anglo-American wit, short-story writer, dramatist and lyricist, educated at Dulwich College and chiefly noted as the creator of the efficient butler, Jeeves. He wrote more than 90 books and more than 20 film scripts and collaborated on more than 30 plays and musical comedies. His major works include Psmith in the City (1910), Very Good Jeeves (1930), The Butler Did It (1957), Bachelors Anonymous (1974), O, Kay (1926) and Rosalie (1928).

Bot a Wooster style story, but an enjoyable read By Paul Donovan The Little Nugget was Agatha Christie's favourite Wodehouse - a choice Wodehouse himself was offended by (as he felt she was not keeping up to date with his latest works). The book contains traces of the "school" genre of writing (e.g "The Pothunters") with its school and setting and gangster involvement. There is also a romantic storyline - unlike the humorous romances of the Wodehouse's later works (the various struggles of the later Blandings books, or the Wooster romances) this has a slightly more serious tone to it - a reminder that Wodehouse wrote for Mills and Boon in his time. The humour, though undoubtedly something different from the polished Jeeves and Wooster dialogue is still very good, and the character of the "little Nugget" is well captured in all his repulsiveness. Indeed his reappearance in "Picadilly Jim" builds on this story - and shows Wodehouses recognition that this was a good comic character that could be developed further. Overall, those whose previous experience of Wodehouse has been Wooster or Lord Emsworth may find themselves a little shocked by the different tone here, but it is a good story with occasional flashes of inspiration in the dialogue. It starts a bit slow with some necessary setup info, but once it switches to first person about thirty pages in, it crackles right along to the end in P.G.'s funhouse style. Four separate kidnappers, a lost love, and a wealthy young man getting his first taste work all swirled together the Wodehouse way equals a sure cure for what ails ya.

What Makes It Different Makes It Good By Nathan Knapp_Voronwë The Little Nugget was my first experience with PGW, and I've since gone on to read several more. More serious in its nature than any of the other Wodehouse's I've ever read, Nugget is still a hillarious story--if not more wistful in the romance section. Smooth Sam Fisher is possibly the most likable villain I have ever read--every section with him had me rolling. While this might not be the best place to start, this is still an excellent novel and a humorous, easy read.
