I have a lot of respect for Townsend, who is an accomplished long distance hiker. Townsend loves wilderness and solitude and as such his writing excludes much of the social adventures that have become the center of so many hiking narratives today. He also believes in the integrity of the route and you’ll not find him skipping sections, hitchhiking and that type of thing. This book is about his 1982 PCT thru hike. There are parts of it that inspire and the technique of blending trail narrative with photography adds much to the volume. What I didn’t like as well was the seemingly continuous point to point guidebook type description… I hiked uphill one mile to Angel’s Rest, then downhill to Happy Valley on this hot day, etc. Long distance hiking is repetitive, but a lot of the text was apparently transcribed from his journal and it makes for some slow and unexciting reading. Notwithstanding, there is much to enjoy here.

By Unknown I am rereading this book for second time, and I have really enjoyed it. My copy is the kindle edition without pictures, and I would have gladly paid more for one with the images. The maps are there though, and I sometimes google images of the locations discussed in the book.Chris townsend is my favorite writer about all things backpacking. If you go to his blog, Chris Townsend Outdoors, he talks about the gear he used during his PCT walk and what gear he would use today. This book is a great read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a fun and very informative book on the PCT By LawMan I have read many books on thru hiking the PCT, and have hiked much of the PCT in Washington state where I lived and roamed for 37 years. In fact, I have read three such books as Townsend's book "Rattlesnakes . . .." In the past month. I read the recent book by an Aussie - I found that one boring, self-centered and I was not convinced he even hiked the whole trail - his descriptions of the Washington trail were skimpy and misleading. This book by Townsend I loved. This guy is enamored with trail hiking and seems to even like the hardships of thru backpacking, and he has a singular sensitivity to the flora, fauna and the geography of the trail, and a love for fellow hikers and the humanity with whom he came into contact. He makes it interesting for couch potatoes who will never set foot on the trail. His narrative was fun and detailed for one written 30 years after this walks. Of the possibly 12 such narratives I have read, this was one of the best. Great job Chris. Keep on trucking the trails.

The Plays Of William Shakespeare: Trageies, by William Shakespeare, Thomas Keightley

About the Author Arguably the greatest English-language playwright, William Shakespeare was a seventeenth-century writer and dramatist, and is known as the Bard of Avon. Under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I, he penned more than 30 plays, 154 sonnets, and numerous narrative poems and short verses. Equally accomplished in histories, tragedies, comedy, and romance, Shakespeare s most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, and As You Like It.

Like many of his contemporaries, including Christopher Marlowe, Shakespeare began his career on the stage, eventually rising to become part-owner of Lord Chamberlain s Men, a popular dramatic company of his day, and of the storied Globe Theatre in London.

Extremely popular in his lifetime, Shakespeare s works continue to resonate more than three hundred years after his death. His plays are performed more often than any other playwright s, have been translated into every major language in the world, and are studied widely by scholars and students.

Stoll Fans of Miss Marple and Jessica Fletcher will love this clever mystery set in one of England's premier public gardens. I have never been to England or seen the gardens described in the book, but Adele's descriptions made them come alive to me. By M.Jacobsen Published in 1863, A Dark Night's Work is the story of Ellinor Wilkins, daughter to a well-to-do country lawyer in rural England. Having lost her mother and sister at a very young age, Ellinor develops an intense bond with her father and enjoys all of his attention and financial comforts throughout her childhood. Her bond with Mr. Wilkins is so strong that, as is wont to happen in these circumstances, Ellinor is also blind to his faults, not the least of which are an over-reaching pride and drunkenness. As Ellinor grows into adulthood, she will eventually meet and become engaged to a young man of a noble family.Just as she is about to float blindly from one comfortable life with her father into another with a husband, tragedy strikes.Mr. Wilkins, in a fit of drunken rage, commits murder. Desperate to avoid the disgrace, Ellinor, her father and a family servant hide the body. From here on out, the story is chiefly concerned with the effects of a guilty conscious. Each person concerned deals with the guilt in devastating ways and the effects are far-reaching into the future.Gaskell's forte with this novella is her examination of character and tragedy. She foreshadows early in the story,"...it is approaching all of us at this very time; you, reader, I, writer, have each our great sorrow bearing down on us. It may be yet beyond the dimmest point of our horizon, but in the stillness of the night our hearts shrink at the sound of its coming footstep. Well is it for those who fall into the hands of the Lord rather than into the hands of men; but worst of all is it for him who has hereafter to mingle the gall of remorse with the cup held out to him by his doom."(A Dark Night's Work, Elizabeth Gaskell)Very gothic, no?Gaskell doesn't attempt to develop much sympathy for Ellinor's plight. Rather, she simply states facts without sentiment and allows the reader's to draw their own conclusions. You may, as you read her story, determine that Ellinor gets everything she had coming to her. Or you may decide the consequences are rather too harsh.Either way, the novella is a story with dark undertones of family dynamics and social mores, rather impressive for the time frame and rather reminds us of Edith Wharton's darker works which weren't to come along for another fifty years. Well worth the download and the time to read it!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Worthwhile Way to Pass the Time By Laura Govia While not quite "high" literature, this is far from a pot boiler. Gaskell brilliantly explores the classism of Victorian England through the development of Mr. Wilkins' character without having the narrator intrude upon the story with unwanted moralizing on the subject.Although the novel fills its quota for the heroine's fainting, the melodrama is kept to a minimum and does not offend the sensibilities of a 21st-century reader.I would recommend it to anyone who would like to read a well-plotted, suspenseful novel by an author with an eye toward the larger issues of her time and the sympathy to create honest and all-too-human characters. This version is good in spite of a typo or two, but I won't complain. It was free, after all.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nice Story with a Good Old Fashioned Ending By Nancy Banner Well written, an adequately complex plot, good group of characters, with a satisfactory ending. One can imagine being in this situation, and faced with how to deal with it. I used this kindle book to contribute to the public domain audio book version, published on Librivox.org.

benediction for a black swan: poems, by Mimi Zollars

Review “The writing of Mimi Zollars pours into you like the most intimate lover, washing over your defenses, nourishing your Spirit, and firing up your Soul. Benediction for a Black Swan is for those among us who want to live and love raw and real like poets, even if we may not have a way with words. Pick it up when you yearn to be brought back to yourself. Drink it in like an elixir of warm milk and honey. It will sit on my altar of sacred writings, alongside my favorites of the ecstatic ancients, Rumi, Kabir, and Hafiz.”—Jennifer Mizel, modern-day Mystic and Alchemist of the Soul “A debut collection of poems exploring love, art, and loss. Some poets focus on the mechanics of poetry, such as intonation and rhythm, and neglect passion. This isn’t the case with Zollars, whose debut collection is a masterful study of how words can be sparingly hewn to create stunning, long-lasting emotional scenes―from a child’s fraught relationship with an alcoholic mother to the cold reality of professional beauty. Each poem offers a perfectly observed moment as seen through a slightly distorted lens, featuring personality, heartbreak, and the desire to bridge distances that can’t be named. A set by a brilliant new poet, featuring exquisite emotional nuance and an impressive mastery of craft.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

About the Author Mimi Zollars was raised on both coasts of the United States and currently lives on a small island off the Texas coast with her three children. Raised in the Catholic Church and the ballet, her ruthlessly romantic view of the world is not uninformed. Zollars attended the University of Washington, where she studied creative writing and dance.

Her words are beautiful and ethereal. This dancer turned poet is fearless in exploring her personal demons and her intimate soul. Her courage takes my breath away! Her words create beautiful pictures in the readers soul and inspire one to live more deeply, more richly, more true to oneself. There is freedom in her words and even her suffering is like beauty rising out of ashes. They say a picture paints a thousand words, but with Mimi, a few magnanimous words paint a picture the reader will deeply drink of.

Hauntingly romantic and sensual "Benediction for a Black Swan" led me around the world to exotic streets, cities and countries. With it’s smooth rhythmic phrases it’s not surprising that Zollars was trained as a dancer as well as a writer. Her voluptuous rich language caught my breath many times as I read and the pauses, designated by spaces instead of commas, gave me a chance to recover before I moved on again. This is a poetry collection I will keep in my bedside table to read over and over before falling to sleep in hopes of igniting my dreams.

A Dancer's Poetry By Barbara Stark-Nemon - author Even in Darkness- a novel I don’t think I’ve ever read a book of poetry from beginning to end in one sitting, but that is exactly what happened when I picked up Mimi Zollars’ Benediction for a Black Swan. Then I went back over the following weeks and savored the exotic vignettes of times, places and characters. A wonderful gardener and architect of words and print on the page, Zollars gives us poems of love and loss, an exquisite appeal to every sense, and a dancer’s taut creation of movement and scene, expressive of beauty within.
