About the Author Bob Sherer retired from IBM after 38 years as a Senior Engineering Manager. His wife, Ann, is an artist who paints in watercolors and most recently in pastels of scenes along the ICW. They've been in boating for the last 35 years, working their way up to their current sailboat, a 42 ft Beneteau 423 which they've sailed on the ICW from New York to Key West and back for the last five years. Boaters who follow Active Captain know him as Bob423 with over 4800 postings on hazards and anchorages. Previously they sailed in Maine for three years and chartered a dozen times in the Caribbean. They love to sail and look forward each September to their yearly trip to Key West. They can be tracked via their daily blog at fleetwing.blogspot.com which is active from September 15 to late May of each year.

The author has carefully researched US Army Corps of Engineers surveys and combined that with his own data collected as he came northbound in the spring of 2015. The author's information helps to sift through some of the confusing and conflicting content found in other sources.

A must have guide for those traveling the ICW By Daniel J Martin I have been following Bob and Ann Sherer travels down the ICW for many years and got my start sailing from information they have provided. I have also made many trips down the ICW and can say that this Guide is a very helpful tool to read as well as have on hand as a reference while traveling the ICW. The information provided will help in making sure that areas of concern are avoided as well as how to outfit a sailboat ( or any boat) to make the trip down the ICW safe and comfortable. As you can see in the many photos provided that this trip is one of the most scenic trips I have ever taken. Going down the ICW takes you to places not available by car and provides breathtaking views and experiences with nature that a trip down the ICW can provide.

Definations and solutions for dealing with ICW hazards By Surfryder This book superbly achieves its stated purpose of defining for ICW cruisers the famous hazards that exist, and how to properly and safely pass through those waterway sections, described with high tech charts and personal experience notes. The book's introductory sections thoroughly describe detailed considerations and preparation for setting out on an extended cruising venture which is a must read for any one considering such an adventure. Of special note is the Sherer's "along the way" favorite provisioning and pet friendly harbors.

Andy Pafko was a quiet, faith-filled man, who was extremely proud of his Slovak heritage. He also happened to play the game of baseball exceptionally well. Called up to the Chicago Cubs in September 1943, Pafko helped give hope to a club in turmoil. He was a part of the franchise's last World Series in 1945 and blossomed into a five-time All-Star as both an outfielder and a third baseman. In June 1951 he was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers. That October, Pafko watched the New York Giants' Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" sail over his head into the leftfield bleachers at the Polo Grounds. The next year he helped lead the Dodgers to the World Series, where they lost to the New York Yankees. After being traded to the Braves, Pafko was instrumental in back-to-back World Series appearances in 1957 and '58 against the Yankees, helping Milwaukee win the crown in '57. He retired after the 1959 season and spent the next decade as a coach and scout. In his twilight years, Pafko frequented Old-Timers games, autograph sessions and made public appearances for the teams he played on professionally.

C HALL Baseball players sometimes fear the “sophomore slump,” a second season that doesn’t live up to the expectations established by the first. Writer Joe Niese has convincingly avoided the sophomore slump with his second baseball biography, “Handy Andy: The Andy Pafko Story.” Niese calls the Badger State home, and like his first subject, pitcher Burleigh Grimes, Pafko was a Wisconsin native. Unlike Grimes, Pafko was no quite of Hall of Fame caliber. Still, he did enjoy a long (seventeen season) career in the major leagues, and was part of many milestones, including the last Chicago Cubs team to go to the World Series (1945); watching Bobby Thomson’s famous home run ball sail over his head as a member of the 1951 Brooklyn Dodgers; and helping to mentor a young outfielder with the Milwaukee Braves, Henry Aaron.Niese is a professional librarian, and his ability to tap into research materials shows throughout this work. But the reader need not fear a dusty accumulation of facts; Niese has an easy, fluid writing style that weaves the threads together in a way that holds the reader’s interest. The biggest knock on “Handy Andy” might be that Pafko wasn’t a very colorful character: Cubs manager Charlie Grimm once asked: “Pafko, when are you going to give me something to worry about?” Still, the man who emerges from these pages is a good and decent one, who played America’s game at its highest level. His is a story that deserves to be told, and thanks to Niese, it’s been told well.

Handy Andy Is a Joy To Read By Ted Reed I should probably wait until I finish reading this book before i write a review, but I am so enjoying reading about the details of the 1945 World Series and of Andy Pafko's role in it that I decided to write immediately.Joe Niese has done an extraordinary job of gathering information about Andy Pafko, not just baseball stats but also details of his family life and of the type of country we had 75 years ago, when baseball was our consuming national interest, we had minor leagues scattered all over the country, and many of us including Andy Pafko lived in small towns. Also, Joe has a relaxed writing style that adds to the enjoyment of reading this book and easily transports the reader back to Pafko's times. I had a ball writing a book about Carl Furillo, whose life in baseball paralleled Pafko's in many ways, and I can see that Joe similarly enjoyed gathering information and talking to many people who remembered his subject. I cannot wait to get to the point where i read about Pafko's stint on the Dodgers, playing in an outfield of Furillo, Pafko, and Snider, considered the best outfield of the time. , OK, I confess, I peeked. I have already read some of this section. I should say that i cannot wait to read it again, because this book is so enjoyable.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. GREAT BOOK! By Ronald L. Sayles My mother was a huge Chicago Cubs fan and her favorite Cub was Andy Pafko. Just a note of interest, my mother was born just two weeks before the Cubs won their last World Series. She passed her love of the Cubs onto me. But being from Wisconsin, when the Boston franchise moved to Milwaukee in 1953, I immediately became a Braves fan. What a nice coincidence that Pafko was traded to the Braves by the Dodgers during the off season of 1952-1953. When I read the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel review of the Pafko book I knew I had to have it. I wasn’t disappointed. It is a good read. I knew I liked Andy Pafko for a reason. That reason, so thoroughly documented in the book, he was a nice person. The book covers Andy’s entire life. Even if you have no interest in baseball, you will enjoy this book. The book is not only about Andy Pafko the baseball player, but Andy Pafko the person.

"Larga y sin piedad es la tortura aquí por la sed de sangre inocente, sin saciar, sin alimentar, ahora que la patria está protegida y rota está la gruta fúnebre, la muerte estuvo donde ahora hay vida saludable." El narrador/protagonista comienza el relato, ya agotado, en una oscura celda en donde la inquisición española encierra a las personas que condena, y donde la tortura que esta aplica consiste en la soledad, el abandono, la oscuridad, el frío y el hambre. El torturado protagonista se encuentra atado en casi su totalidad y experimenta la angustia de conocer su próxima muerte pues un péndulo desciende hacia él. Luego de medir el tamaño de su celda, este descubre un profundo pozo con agua ubicado en el centro del sitio. Seguro de que será muerto por la navaja del extremo de tal péndulo, se entretiene con la trayectoria del objeto, pero luego se le ocurre una idea, recordando que tiene a su disposición un poco de carne, comida que compartía con las ratas. Con dificultad logra rociar su cuerpo con un poco del alimento, y los roedores le saltan encima, comiendo y royendo la cuerda que le tiene atado. Ya liberado, de inmediato el péndulo se detiene y razona el hombre en cuestión que está siendo vigilado, y que ya se prepara para él una muerte quizá peor. La habitación calienta su ambiente al rojo vivo y cambia de forma reduciendo su tamaño, haciendo que las paredes se cierren en torno de el protagonista, y empujándolo al borde del ominoso pozo. El narrador se ve en la disyuntiva de morir triturado o de lanzarse al pozo que originalmente iba a ser su "sepultura". Cuando se encuentra sin más espacio para huir, totalmente desesperanzado y a punto de tirarse al pozo, una mano lo sujeta y lo salva. La mano es la de un líder militar francés que había entrado en Toledo durante las Guerras Napoleónicas y descubierto las torturas a las que eran sometidas las víctimas de la inquisición.

About the Author Hailey Bzdok, aged twenty, grew up in St. Cloud, Minnesota. She participated in high school speech and is involved in local musicals and theater productions. She has an accounting AAS degree and is currently working toward a culinary diploma. At a young age, Hailey was influenced by well-known author Shel Silverstein. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Amusing folly from a master By But Seriously So much lighter than I expected, this is a rueful sort of reminiscence. Though the narrator is an "old soldier" rather than an "old novelist", James is there. You might call this "The Man Who Thought Too Much", as he turns out to be like a hero or two of his who obsess over their mistaken assumptions about the motives of others without ever going to the source to clear things up. Still pining over a long lost love, it takes the example of a younger, perhaps wiser man to teach him the possible "alternative" ending.
