Erika thought America would let freedom reign forever but nine years after the Great Quake the reaction by the American Government was quite different. The Day after Disaster brought hardships to the world. The American citizens fought valiantly to bring back some sense of normalcy in a world that was shaken to bits. Many people were left landless and those still in possession of land had many obligation to fulfill for the citizens left fighting for their lives. Erika and her family are just another group left landless and forced to find their way in this new government construct. They are caught between a yearning for the freedoms they used to take for granted and a will to fit in and excel in this new landscape. However, Mother Nature will always have the last word and she isn't done yet.

One of my biggest bitches about the Dystopian Genre is there's no end to rape, torture and graphic murder... but no sex. Miz Hathaway apparently knows it exists. It's not all there is to the book, but at least it's not ignored and fits in well with a good story. Enjoy it.

If you have ever wondered what it would By Lisa If you have read Day After Disaster (Sara’s first book) you are already familiar with her characters. The story takes place 9 years after the big quake annihilated California, and creates a very realistic look of what a future after an SHTF scenario could be like.If you have ever wondered what it would be like to live in a FEMA camp, read this book.If you have ever wondered how you would react in the event of an ultimate collapse of our great nation, read this book.If you have ever thought about what it would be like if all luxuries, and modern conveniences were gone, or not in your control, read this book.If you want a fast paced story with a really interesting twist in the end, read this book! Many of the characters that Sara created in her first book are back, 9 years later. She gives us a glimpse into their lives, and we get a front row seat to every dilemma they are faced with and how they handle themselves in those situations.I think one of the best things about her book is it is easy to insert yourself into the place of the characters, and it makes you think about how would you react if that situation presented itself for you? What would you do?I don’t like giving spoilers about the story, so I’m sorry, I won’t tell you what happens, but I will tell you this book is definitely worth your time.

I thoroughly enjoyed Without Land and the story is well written By Larry Landgraf Erika Moore is the sole survivor of Sacramento in the Day of Disaster, Sara’s prequel to Without Land. Erika endured a lot when the unthinkable happened to this planet and life as she knew it disappeared. But, that was nothing compared to what she has to endure now. Erika is a rebel, but she is also a wife and mother, living in what is left of Las Vegas. The new government has zero tolerance for misfits. That tag fit Erika perfectly and she fought back. What she could do was however limited. Erika had to think about her family as well. And, basic survival was a major struggle. This place was literally a prison and rubbed against every fiber of her being. She longed to escape, but could she? What would she find if she could? She had no idea what the rest of the world had become over the years. I thoroughly enjoyed Without Land and the story is well written. It may be a survival story, but it is also about love and family. Pick up a copy. You won’t be disappointed.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. very practical guide By Dave Tucker This book was awesome and the first one I got regarding speed reading. I tried the various exercises and am impressed, though I do need to stretch my peripheral vision more, I realize how much I would read out the word in my head, which means that I can only read as fast as I talk. I also used the pen for this book. So, my average reading speed regularly was 262 words per minute. But after doing the 2nd exercise after the introductory Len exercise, it jumped up to 484 words per minute. I also estimated that I retained 85-90% of what I read. The hard part was when certain apps were mentioned and I can't recall what the names were. But I can understand that they were talking about the apps and their capabilities. I didn't strictly read every 2 words but I was skipping words and easing my gaze. It's really cool and I realize how much it can save me times especially since I enjoy reading. This opens up new possibilities for me and time is a commodity we all have, and we all have 24 hrs. A short and insightful read for me.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very helpful tips and suggestions. By Ma. Antonia Amorsolo Being able to read fast while still understanding and retaining some information has been on my wish list for a while. I have been reading short books and how to guides in part working towards this goal. So I’m glad I found this book as it has helped me a lot. The book could use a refresh on the formatting and styling department but the content is gold. It teaches you to remove the old habits like reading aloud in your head, then helps you remove the habits as you continue reading the book. Then it teaches you a few key methods to speed up your reading. The author did an excellent job for covering pretty much all of the questions someone, including myself, would ask when it comes to speed reading and how to make it a reality. The rules were very helpful, if you master them then you will be able to read through large documents fast while getting the main points which is what I want.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wow do I need this book. By Ed Wright I have always struggled to read without getting bored in the middle and either falling asleep or stopping in the middle due to bordem. I have always been fascinated with the concept of speed reading and believe it is very effective way to read without wasting time. All the way back to those Evelyn wood commercials on TV back in the 80's where they showed the guy moving his a head a million miles a minute and turning the pages of the book very quickly I remember being in awe and saying how do I do that. The book is very well written and covers some interesting topics such as understand your current reading style, training your eyes and brain, using technology and keys to success. If you are someone who does a LOT of reading with limited time to do it this book is for you.

My children and grandchildren had bought it, wrote in some family stories and then gave it to me for my birthday. It was the greatest, personal gift! We all read a page outloud and laughed and laughed. This is, like the author says, a gem.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. it is a true little gem! By h.beegle I just received this adorable book as a gift from my son and daughter-in-law. I know so many friends who are seniors who will love this. The true stories are hysterical and some of them are just so sweet. I especially got a kick out of the drawings. Like cartoons. I'm going to order some for my senior friends as Christmas gifts. Fun reading.

Virtue and Adventure in the Middle Ages By Virginian "Virtue Conquers" is the theme of this wholesome adventure story set in the Middle Ages during the reign of Edward III of England. Eustace, the scholarly but valiant brother-in-law of Sir Reginald Lynwood, goes as his squire to Spain under the banner of the English sovereign. In his first battle, he loses his brother-in-law but gains a knight's spurs for his courage. His future looks very bright, but soon his prospects sour through no fault of his own. Suspicion, rumors of wizardry, and attempts on his life now replace the earlier praise and honor, and how he confronts injustice makes an interesting read full of chivalry and adventure.

She mainly wrote domestic novels, but ventured into historical fiction as well. The historical works of hers I have read are as a whole better written, although several of her domestic fiction works are quite good (The Heir of Redclyffe, Dynevor Terrace). The Lances of Lynwood is an excellent tale set iin the Middle Ages that explores the fortunes of the Reginald Lynwood and his house. Yonge does a good job of describing the politics and power plays that went on during that time period through her characters. The novel is well-paced with a storyline that will keep readers interested from start to finish.

Macdonald A very well written young adult historical novel on the 100 years war set in England, Southern France and Northern Spain. The novel focuses on the last years of Edward, the "Black Prince", beginning with his campaign in Spain in 1367. The protagonist is a squire in the English army in Aquitaine who takes the reader through battles and intrigue, camp and court life in Aquitaine, a siege, and home life in an English castle. As with Charlotte Yonge's other novels and stories there is a strong moral theme of honor.

It's the year 2020, and John Dean is making plans - big plans. He's seen the writing on the wall. Temperatures of over 45 degrees are a regular occurrence and sea levels are rising; severe drought has meant harsh water restrictions, and the economy has slowed almost to a standstill. But John is not going to sit and suffer; he'll do whatever it takes to protect his family, and he's taking action. This is the story of how he moves his family away from a society on the brink of destruction to create a haven and make a fresh start. The Dean family and those who join them on their farm pull together to create a self-sufficient life as civilisation crumbles around them. They struggle to learn farming techniques and long-lost skills, but they survive. Then a threat comes from the north when refugees stream into northern Australia to escape heat, flooding and starvation. The Dean group must do the unimaginable: they must kill to defend the farm and their lives. This well-paced futuristic story about the astonishing human ability to adapt will keep readers engaged from the beginning as they imagine what they would do in the same situation - a totally credible scenario, as global warming increases its grip on our planet. The characters are beautifully drawn, and readers will be able to relate to the family relationships and admire the leadership of John and his son. Until the Little Birds Sing is a thoroughly engaging book - at times a grim tale, but ultimately one of hope, courage and renewal.

Thought provoking By markatport A simple but thought provoking summary of what it would be like when a family is confronted with the harsh reality of climate change. Written from an Australian perspective in the Aussie idiom, it portrays a Sydney family as they face reality and head for the hills seeking a new life as the city succumbs to the ravages of severe weather events.Their struggles to create a new life are an inspiration.

1.—The Trial. THE gentlemen of the jury retired to consider their verdict. Their foreman was a person doubly distinguished among his colleagues. He had the clearest head, and the readiest tongue. For once the right man was in the right place. Of the eleven jurymen, four showed their characters on the surface. They were: The hungry juryman, who wanted his dinner. The inattentive juryman, who drew pictures on his blotting paper. The nervous juryman, who suffered from fidgets. The silent juryman, who decided the verdict.

The Evil Genius: A Domestic Story, by Wilkie Collins

    Review

“Collins’ boldness in drawing sympathetic portraits of both the wife and ‘the other woman’ is astonishingly modern. The novel well deserves to be brought back into print.” ― Catherine Peters, Oxford University

From the Publisher The Broadview Literary Texts series is an effort to represent the ever-changing canon of literature in English by bringing together texts long regarded as classics with valuable, though lesser-known literature.

    From the Back Cover

Wilkie Collins is best known for his great mystery The Moonstone and The Woman in White―and for a life as sensational as are those novels. (The writer who famously advised other novelists to ‘make ‘em laugh, make ‘em cry, make ‘em wait’ is now known to have kept entire households in different parts of England going simultaneously.) Yet Collins also wrote a succession of extraordinarily powerful novels of private life; of these The Evil Genius is among the finest.

The story is motivated by the attraction between Herbert Linley and the woman he hires as governess for his child Kitty―the long suffering Sydney Westerfield. As one expects with Collins, the story is driven forward with deft assurance. Yet he also treats the theme of adultery and divorce in a manner quite unconventional for his time―and, remarkably, he manages to draw readers into a sympathetic understanding of both of the main female characters: the offending governess and the aggrieved wife.

The Evil Genius was a very considerable success when first published; indeed, it brought Collins more financially than any of his other works. Over a century later its sinews retain the strength to speak powerfully to the reader; lively and intelligent, it is perhaps the finest of Collins’ later novels.

Evil, Genius, Or Both By taking a rest Mr. Collins is best known for "The Moonstone", and "The Lady In White", and is generally considered the originator of modern mystery writing. He wrote an extensive body of work that never reached the same success with the public as the 2 works already mentioned. Some of his later work is not of the same caliber of his best-known writings, but there are many that are well worth the time of any reader that enjoys 19th Century Fiction. "The Evil Genius" is one work that while not stellar when compared to his best, is still as good or better than many contemporary practitioners of the genre.Mr. Collins had an interest in the laws of Scotland as they applied to marriage. This was a theme he dealt with on more than one occasion. I have found him to be unique that while he addresses the impact of the law on both men and women, he more often than not explores the women's viewpoint, either as victim or beneficiary of Scotland's unique body of law. "Evil Genius" is an example of the law being a "friend" to the Wife, however this is but one event that results from the tale, and catalyzes many others. This is not a mystery in the style of who did the deed, rather a study in who did what to whom and why. There is one who I believe virtually all readers will deem "The Evil Genius", however Mr. Collins gives all involved in this tale their chance at the title. In several cases the action that you readily expect of a person is precisely what they do not do. Generosity replaces greed, falsehoods of a devastating nature are set on the most innocent of persons, and honor has as many meanings in this work as there are characters that believe they practice it.The story includes an opening with a jury that will ensure you never want to be a defendant, a ship that was alleged to have been intentionally destroyed at sea facilitating a diamond theft, and the ship's captain languishing in prison awaiting the verdict. From this point on the book traces the seemingly random intersecting of a variety of persons, some of who are the more interesting characters Mr. Collins created. There is Mrs. Presty, the Mother In Law created by Dante, Mrs. Linley or Norman or Linley and her extremely precocious Daughter Kitty, a Captain Bennydeck, and the attorney Mr. Sarrazin. Mr. Sarrazin is particularly interesting, described as "being English down to the weight of his umbrella"; he is actually of French descent. These alternate personalities are demonstrated when he rescues truffles from a friend's plate, and finding he could have only enjoyed them more were his eyes closed so that he may have concentrated upon them. However when asked whether he can row a boat he replies "In any water you like Mr. Gardener, fresh or salt." And then "Think of asking Me an athletic Englishman, if I could row!"The story is not the strongest of Mr. Collins's works, but is very worthwhile. A decent story that contains great players, and some wonderful dialogue.

Novel Ahead of its Time: Victorian Domestic Drama & Divorce By Amazon Customer Wilkie Collins' "The Evil Genuis" was published in 1886, about three years before the author's death. It is unanimously agreed that Wilkie Collins' works in 1870-80s are inferior to his four masterpieces in the 60s (such as "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone"), but "The Evil Genuis" is a welcome surprise because this is surprisingly well-made and occasionally, very arresting. The novel is well ahead of its time, dealing with such topics as divorce and child-custody, and unlike other works of him in this era, or writers like Charles Reade, the whole effect is not didactic. There is no murder or stolen jewel, but still this domestic drama is quite engaging in its own way.The story starts with a courtroom scene, where the procedure of the jury to decide whether a certain man is guilty or not is described with Collins' amusingly satrical touch. But this interesting sequence is just an introduction to the main part, in which an ill-treated girl Sydney Westerfield is taken under the wing of handsome Mr. Herbert Linley as governess. Herbert is living with his pretty and merry daughter Kitty, his amiable wife and her acid-tongued mother in Scotland. And don't forget, Sydney is sweet-natured and for all her painful past, she is very beautiful.A beautiful governess and husnand in the same house. You should know what happens next (like, Minnie Driver and Tom Wilkinson in the film "The Governess"). You see a newly-born difference between the husband and wife, and then the officious mother-in-law makes it worse. It is a usual course, you may say, but this is a Victorian novel; there are lots of melodramatic coincidences that help the tension rise higher and higher. As melodrama with surprisingly modern subjevt matter "The Evil Genius" has considerble power, written with complelling dialogues. The child Kitty's are memorable among them, who must live among this acrimonious atomosphere. The rest of the story is unpredictable and very interesting, showing the Victorian way of handling the matters like custody and even possibility of re-marriage, but Collins' stance is very ambiguous through the novel about these guilty people. You may remember the historical fact that Wilkie Collins himself never married, but was very happy continuing his relations with two women at the same time.A few words about the title's "Genius." You soon realize to whom this apparently self-evident word refers, but in fact the "genius" means here not the people like Edison, but rather, "a spirit." This "Evil Genius" is used as a kind of antonym (opposite meaning) to "Angel of the House," referring to the very meddling person. That character's description is very compelling, one of the best creations Collins made. Not his best, but still "The Evil Genius" deserves to be read by those who are interested in social matters like divorce and child-custody in Victorian period, or in any good domestic dramas.[about BROADVIEW LITERARY TEXT] Broadview's edition includes Prof. Graham Law's introduction, and 9 pages of notes which are helpful. Also, it has 5 excerpts of contemporary reviews (4 pages), brief samples of advertisements for governess, fashionable news (news about the celebrities), and reports of the real divorce cases.

Collins describes the jury with a satiric humor that leads the reader to believe this is another Moonstone. It is not. This is a story about morality, not mystery. The beginning is just a prologue of the life of Sydney, a traumatized little girl who grows up to be "the other woman" in a triangle with a married man. Collins gives both the wife and mistress a fair hearing given the time period, however the adultery of the husband is somewhat whitewashed. The triangle is further complicated by the daughter whose life is affected by the three adults. The "genius", who I won't give away, is more manipulative than evil; although there are moments of malevolence from this conniving person. The ending is trite given the subject matter, as if Collins didn't want to appear too progressive. However, the book is still worth reading as a character study for the mores of the generation. For readers looking for another Moonstone, try Collins' The Queen of Hearts. For readers looking for an interesting period drama, this should fit the bill nicely.
