Killing My Noise is a collaboration of prose and poetry. This first collection makes up the skeletal figure of the monster that I believe lives beneath all of our skins. It portrays a weaving, unattractive story of its birth, its self recognition, and the path that it must bore when we allow our darkness to find its way out.

The Dead of Winter, by A.B. Gibson

About the Author Alan Gibson has lived an eccentric life brimming with constant travel, exotic adventure, unusual living spaces, and terrific friends. A brief stint as a copywriter led to a lifelong career in advertising, and he was fortunate enough to flourish on both the creative and media sides of the industry. Alan and his partner, Scott Beard, live with their dogs Archie and Jack, in a rambling old house on a quiet farm, which in the fall opens to the public and becomes a bustling pumpkin patch with hayrides and corn mazes. Oh, and a chainsaw or two, but that’s where any similarity with The Dead of Winter ends.

It seems to me that it was far from right for the Professor of English Literature in Yale, the Professor of English Literature in Columbia, and Wilkie Collins to deliver opinions on Cooper's literature without having read some of it. It would have been much more decorous to keep silent and let persons talk who have read Cooper.

Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences, by Mark Twain

About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

By DWD's Reviews Nearly 20 years ago I saw the movie The Last of the Mohicans (Director's Expanded Edition). I knew it was probably not too much like the books, but I was inspired to read James Fenimore Cooper: The Leatherstocking Tales I; The Pioneers, The Last of the Mohicans, The Prairie (Library of America), a collection of his work featuring Natty Bumpo (Hawkeye) and I found them to be horrible. Not just bad, but darn near unreadable. Now, note that I am a top reviewer here at Amazon. I love books, but I hate this author even though I love American history (I am a history teacher), I love frontier stories and I was certainly predisposed to like his works. But, I've always kept my opinions to myself, despite the fact that he had one sentence that lasted more than two pages describing a banquet table that featured a near endless string of semi-colons.Until now.If Mark Twain, the quintessential American writer finds Cooper wordy, clunky and darn near unreadable (to be specific, Twain calls his work "a crime against the English language"), than I can proudly say that I too find James Fenimore Cooper to be a hack.Of course, Twain says it much better. His sarcasm is laser sharp. He is merciless and I laughed out loud. Twain at his best, especially if you are familiar with Cooper.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. English Majors, Authors and Newspaper Hacks Take Note By Rarkm This is by far the best essay on bad writing ever written. More offensive to nature than the bad writer is the "important" writer who uses bloated language, stylistic conceits without reason and obscure, inexact and unnecessary words and constructions. Twain picked (or picked on) James Fenimore Cooper for this little essay -- Cooper was at the time a "major" American author -- and his writing is still taught in schools and universities. Many of Cooper's lesser 19th century contemporaries engaged in the same overblown writing excesses, but Cooper was and is the best known from that period. In picking Cooper, Twain was essentially shooting a tuna fish in a barrel. Their writing styles could not have been more different. Twain had one foot in the 20th century, while Cooper had both feet in the 18th century.Perhaps I am being too harsh. Read the Leatherstocking Tales, then Twain's essay and you decide.Let's just say that I garnered nary a chuckle from Cooper, but laughed until I choked at Twain's essay.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Laugh out loud funny! By noseinabook This is a short story worth reading. While traveling, I read it aloud to my husband. Seriously, he was laughing so hard he had to concentrate on driving! Mark Twain's description of Cooper's writing style is wonderfully funny. There is a part about Indians and a boat that is the best of all. If you read it, you'll understand what I'm talking about. Just download it and read it. After all, it's free. What do you have to lose?

The San Francisco 49ers are among the most dynamic franchises, not only in the National Football League but in all of professional sports. They have won five Super Bowl titles and have produced some of football's most dynamic players in Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Ronnie Lott, all of whom were coached by Bill Walsh, one of the game's most innovative thinkers. The 49ers greatness came 35 years after the franchise began in 1946. During those years, they achieved no conference or league titles, even though they produced eight Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees, including the celebrated Million Dollar Backfield. Offering a detailed look at the 49ers prolonged growing pains, from the 1940s through the mid1970s, Founding 49ers focuses on that mostly unfulfilled time before the DeBartolo family rescued the franchise.

Author Dave Newhouse provides a fascinating look at the 49ers early years through the eyes of the players who gave the franchise its foundation. Ex49ers from the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s share their tales within these pages, including two members of the original 1946 team; Lou Spadia, the last surviving member of the 49ers original front office; former 49ers coach George Seifert; and Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts, son of an early 49ers broadcaster.

These mostly forgotten 49ers didn't win like their successors, but they were highly entertaining, they broke down racial barriers, and they turned San Francisco into a major league city. Founding 49ers captures the history of those preWalsh 49ers like no book before it.

The Television Crossover Universe is a shared reality that is created based in interconnected crossovers. The center is I Love Lucy, so to be in the TVCU, you should be able to do a six degrees of Lucy. Television Crossover Universe: Worlds and Mythology is a combination of material originally appearing on the Television Crossover Universe and new material. This volume consists of three in-depth chronologies detailing some of the wilder theories that have been presented within the Television Crossover Universe's history. Flintstones Forever: The Bedrock Anomaly explains how two modern stone age families became the ancestors of comedic fat and thin duos, and eventually modern families of animation. The Doctor Who Universe explores the world created by crossover connections that lead back to the classic long running BBC series. A League of Their Own: Crisis of the Super Friends focuses of DC super-heroes, as depicted on the screen, attempting to explain the links that trace them back to the Television Crossover Universe. This book is for fans of the fictional crossover, those who obsess over the details of their favorite shows and like to image their favorite characters existing out there in the multiverse.

It seems a lot of it was just copy-pasted from the website, typos and all. Many entries seem to not be written as if they were part of a compilation, and I found a couple that reference this very book as if it were something separate from itself. The premise of the Bedrock Anomaly, the immortality of the Three Stooges, and things like that are occasionally just thrown in as if the reader hadn't just read them at the beginning of the section. All that aside, it's obviously a labor of love, heavily researched, and fascinating. A lot of fun!

Review 'This man Austin Freeman is a wonderful performer' --Raymond Chandler

About the Author R. Austin Freeman is the doyen of the scientific division of detective writing, is best known for his character Dr John Thorndyke. A close and careful investigator and the outstanding medical authority in the field of detective fiction, R. Austin Freeman not only tested the wits of the reader but also inspired many modern detective forensic methods. Much of his long life was spent as a physician and surgeon at the Middlesex Hospital, London. He also held posts in West Africa and later was a medical officer at Holloway Prison. The most famous of the Edwardian detective writers, he rescued the detective story from "thrillerdom" and made it acceptable to a more discerning class of reader.

The background added so much to the story, and the descriptions made one feel as if they were there. The mystery in itself was well-woven, even if the reader connected the stories before the detectives did. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and am looking forward to more Dr. Thorndyke mysteries.

35 of 35 people found the following review helpful. what plus what makes WHAT?!! By Anne Wingate http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002RKR9Q4/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_imgI LOVE Dr. Thorndyke, no matter which narrator is telling the story. This was especially good, with red herrings cluttering up the crime until it is hard to determine even whether there WAS a crime, much less who did it and why. I did figure out what was going on, but that might be because of specialized knowledge I have: Dr. Thorndyke is a CSI before CSIs were invented, and I was a CSI before being a CSI became fashionable. So I was able to follow, and a few times (because the point-of-view character wasn't one of the usuals) to precede, Dr. Thorndyke's reasoning. You might be able to. But whether you succeed or not in solving the crime before Thorndyke does, you'll certainly enjoy this old-time detective story.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. A Wonderful Surprise! By ATB / Molly Black Having gathered together a list of mystery, detective, and crime writers from Agatha Christies Secret Notebooks I turned to both Munsys and Gutenberg to find any of these influences and contemporaries of Ms. Christie. My delight upon finding myself thoroughly engrossed in this novel after the terrible dullness of a previous writer was great. I found that though the story is told in such a way that I knew the reasons and the murderer very quickly that none of my enjoyment in this very readable novel was hindered.I intend to read as many of this author's work as I can as not since Collected Works of Anna Katharine Green (25 Books) have I found such a readable writer from their shared era. This is the third book starring the very learned Dr. Thorndyke. His friend, and as of this book his junior, fulfills the role of sidekick in a typical manner. Dr. Jerris learns and shares, and even if you find it difficult (as I did) that he would not put two and two properly together, I at least found his learning certain things via his friend as instructive of good scientific reasoning as propounded by Dr. Thorndyke.I'm writing this review on an iPod Touch which has the Kindle application. That makes it difficult to keep track of my review. But it does mean I can rate this Kindle eBook properly - the mistakes and typos were few and the formatting unobtrusive and the eBook as a whole looked decent. For free I don't expect linked TOC - though it would be nice.On completion I can say that I highly recommend it.
