About the Author Max Brand is the best-known pen name of Frederick Faust, creator of such beloved characters as Destry and Dr. Kildare, among others. Eighty motion pictures and many radio and television programs have been based on his work. Faust went to Italy as a war correspondent during World War II after the United States entered the conflict, and he was killed during a night attack on a hilltop village held by the German army. I bought my first book at the used book store when looking for a new Western writer. As soon as I started reading, I knew he was much more than a "Western writer." I Googled him, and sure enough, "Max Brand" is just one of the pen names for one of the greatest writers of our time. If you love reading well-developed characters, inspiring stories with some plot twists, and horses thrown in, pick up one of his stories. The first one I read (I don't remember which one it was), I could smell that one character - he's that good of a writer.

A Good Read By Alison Anderson The story starts off a little slow, but within two or three chapters it picks up speed to become an express train of surprise & action. A Good Read that held my attention, but not so much that I couldn't put it down to get some chores done. The character development is phenomenal--I connected with them and felt like I knew them personally. Any western genre fan will enjoy this book.

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Unfinished, but excellent By A Customer This was Stevenson's last novel and is unfinished, though it is known how it was going to finish. The main feature of the plot is the relationship between Lord Hermiston, a judge renowned for his stringency, and his more liberal (but still fairly well-behaved) son. The plot is of course a lot more complex than that, and the father is absent for most of even what Stevenson wrote before his death.It is a very Scottish novel, with large portions of it taking place in the Scottish countryside, with clan relations, etc. and with most of the dialogue in Scots.Some of the characterisation is excellent, and if it had been finished with Stevenson's usual ability along the suggested storyline, it would have been a very moving novel indeed.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. a neglected masterpiece By othoniaboys This is Stevenson's masterpiece, and yet it is neglected by Americans. There are four main reasons. First, Stevenson died when he was only about a hundred pages into the text, so it's unfinished and nobody likes to read an unfinished novel. Secondly, the dialogue is in Scottish dialect with the words spelled phonetically to give the pronunciation, plus a bunch of words unknown to Americans. There is a glossary at the back, but nobody likes having to flip back and forth. Thirdly, this is not for kids and it's not a horror story, so it doesn't attract the fans of Treasure Island or Jekyll and Hyde. It cannot be made into a movie because of its truncated state, so it won't attract movie-goers. The Penguin edition has a fine introduction by Karl Miller.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Good But Uncompleted Book By Tom Tripp Stevenson is a wonderful writer. I enjoyed reading it while traveling around Scotland where it is set. It is sad that he died before completing the book, but the kindle edition includes helpful notes about the plans he had for the conclusion of the novel.

About the Author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in 1807 in Portland, Maine, and he became a professor of modern languages at Harvard. His most famous narrative poems include The Song of Hiawatha, Paul Reveres Ride, "The Village Blacksmith," "The Wreck of the Hesperus." From his friend Nathaniel Hawthorne, Longfellow got a brief outline of a story from which he composed one of his most favorite poems, 'Evangeline'. The original story had Evangeline wandering about New England in search of her bridegroom. One of the first poets to take the landscape and stories of North America as his subjects, Longfellow became immensely popular all over the world, and he was the first American commemorated in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey. He was given honorary degrees at the great universities of Oxford and Cambridge, invited to Windsor by Queen Victoria, and called by request upon the Prince of Wales. He was also chosen a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and of the Spanish Academy. He died on March 24, 1882.

Longfellow's extended narrative is set in a regular, easily recognized rhythm. This rhythm guides Hootkins's delivery, as this is more of a performance than a simple reading. He powerfully underscores the moments of import, giving the impression of a traditional storyteller revisiting a familiar piece. The one weakness in Hootkins's performance may come from matching Longfellow's poetry too closely. In one scene, my protagonist is speaking of Lake Superior, aka Gitche Gamee. So, I was happy to find Hiawatha as a freebie on Kindle, found the section I needed...then I kept reading. And cried. This work is so beautiful, so evocative. I grew up on the shore of Gitche Gamee myself (in Northern Wisconsin). Longfellow's poetry captured the wild beauty of the land and the Great Lake. He found the soul of the land and its early inhabitants, and passed that soul onto his readers. The "Peace Pipe" scene at the beginning enchanted me. This poety is magical.

For years, this great American poem of the 19th century has been relegated to the children's poetry shelves, where it lies languishing, despite several fine picture book editions of parts of it. Parodied almost upon publication, notably by Lewis Carroll, its heavy beat, taken from a Finnish epic, has been thought of as archsoporific. To use Shaw's phrase for late Ibsen drama, it has to be really DONE. And it is in this superb, unabriged recording. The producers and reader William Hootkins have trusted the poem itself, and Longfellow's intentions, not the parodists. The result? The restoration of an American classic, one of the first truly populist works in the canon of American poetry. The richness of the language and the stirring images, especially of Hiawatha and Mudgikeewis, are there to be revelled in. Should you ask me, is it worth it, is this reading worth the effort, I should say, Do but listen, do but stop and hear the heartbeats! Excellent, and very much needed!

Perhaps like you, I have greatly enjoyed sports as long as I can remember. As a child, I was blessed with good eye-hand coordination, but below average running speed. I had some early success with badminton, baseball, and dodge ball. Later, I enjoyed basketball, track, football, tennis, table tennis, softball, and golf. Although I enjoyed all of these sports, I never had illusions about being a professional athlete. Somewhere along the way, I managed to find time away from sports activities long enough to earn a Ph.D. in psychology and embark on a long career in a field called, “Human Computer Interaction.” This field (also called “User Experience”) basically tries to make sure systems are designed so as to be useful and usable by the people who use them. (Imagine!) I also found myself in a number of management and executive positions as well as working as a counselor and licensed psychologist. In sports, I found myself winning on many occasions against people who were bigger, stronger, faster, more athletic, and often much younger. Over time, it seemed to me that many of my victories sprang from a few common themes repeated over and over. Many of these themes had to do with psychology and with management. Moreover, many of the ineffective decisions I saw people making on the golf course, the tennis court and the softball field bore a striking similarity to the ineffective decisions I saw people making in boardrooms, meeting rooms, and in software development projects. Indeed, seeing and overcoming many of these same human foibles formed the basis for the psychotherapy I practiced. I began to wonder whether a book could help people become aware of some of these foibles and overcome them. If successful, such a book should aid people in every sport. For that matter, these same principles should help them in every other aspect of life. In this book, I have almost exclusively illustrated my points with sports. In a few cases though, I could not help myself from making comments about business. If you do not care about business, please feel free to skip right over those sections. Similarly, if examples from any particular sport leave you cold, please skip over those as well. Above all, this is a book, like sports itself, that is to be enjoyed. Many books on how to succeed at sports are authored by professional athletes or trainers of professional athletes. While some of these are certainly fun to read, they may not be especially helpful to the vast majority of folks like me who enjoy sports but do not have the body of a professional athlete and who do not have the time to practice a sport 40-60 hours a week. In addition, many people like me who enjoy sports are nowhere near the peak age for their sport. This book is primarily written for the amateur athlete rather than the pro. About the Author John Charles Thomas graduated summa cum laude from Case-Western Reserve, majoring in psychology, minoring in mathematics and drama. He received a Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Michigan and managed a research project at Harvard Med School on the Psychology of Aging. He then joined IBM Research where he worked in Human Computer Interaction for the next dozen years including a two year stint at IBM CHQ where he spearheaded efforts to improve IBM’s user experience. He left IBM to start the Artificial Intelligence Lab at NYNEX where he served as Executive Director for another dozen years. In 1998, he rejoined IBM Research to work in knowledge management and human computer interaction. For several years, he managed a group on the business uses of stories and storytelling. John was instrumental in the formation of ACM’s Special Interest Group in Human Computer Interaction and has served on numerous organizing committees and program committees over the last 35 years. Most recently, he was on the program committee for ACM’s Turing Centenary Celebration and currently is Adjunct Chair for Mentoring on the SIGCHI Executive Committee. He has over 250 invited presentations and publications in the fields of AI, HCI, and psychology. He is also inventor or co-inventor of patents in the areas of business process, mobile interfaces, creativity aids, software as a service, and information retrieval. He has worked on the user experience for tools/services for consultants, software developers, and consumers. John has taught courses and led workshops in such diverse topics as creativity, storytelling, the psychology of aging, statistics, cognitive psychology and human computer interaction. Popular progressive fiction from the early years of the 1900’s By Jaylia Edna Ferber’s third and final book about savvy career woman Emma McChesney entertained me at least as much as the previous two, beginning with a flurry of excitement in the first chapter. After spending the last 15 years traveling between small Midwest towns or living in New York City, Emma sets off on a boat trip down the coast of the continent to sell her T. A. Buck Featherloom petticoats and skirts in Argentina, where she takes the country by storm. Based on the last two books I knew romance was headed Emma’s way, but she’d been so determinedly independent I wasn’t sure I would like it--I did.Along with being good stories these books charmed and fascinated me by presenting a lively picture of how people lived, thought, worked, played, dressed, traveled, raised their children, and fell in love 100 years ago during the early decades of the 1900’s. In one chapter Emma was forced to deal with wealthy lady organizers bent promoting their pet cause, which wasn’t “Votes for women” as I had guessed, but instead a self-righteous insistence based on their rigid uneven morality that working class “girls” must be convinced to dress with drab unassuming modesty as befits their station. I would have been disappointed if Emma turned out to be an anti-suffragette, but Emma was right to poke a little good natured fun at these women.Ferber wrote all three Emma McChesney novels long enough ago that they’re in the public domain so free ebook versions can be downloaded from sites like Project Gutenberg or here on Amazon. I listened to superbly narrated audio versions available on the Libravox website that made me almost enjoy my commute--I had witty Emma and her adventures to keep me occupied.

Last of the Emma McChesney books - doesn't disappoint By Austen lover I've already raved about the first Emma McChesney book - in many ways this is even more interesting, if not as funny.It starts off with a business trip to South America. I'm in an odd position here. I've been reading several other 1910-1925 novels, some of which have South Americans in them. By present day standards, the depiction of South Americans in this book is very very sterotyped (especially the women) which is disappointing. Compared to the other novels I've been reading written in the same era, this book is much more fair & balanced. But even considering that, once again Ferber writes about real business - about South American buyers complaining more about the inefficiencies of US packaging vs. European packaging and what it will add to the cost of shipping.And then she moves on to sexism. She sends her boss & love interest out on a sales trip to the Midwest for the first time and then is disappointed to find that everyone wants to deal with him instead of her when she comes home.There's also a very funny chapter on country club women trying to enforce a "sensible" dress code on working girls and a lovely finally chapter on being a grandmother.It's the freshness of the relationships I love. She and the love interest have no idiot misunderstandings; they work as a team; her daughter in law is as smart as she is and they have no quibbles between them and in 1914, Ferber suggests that a married couple can get on each other's nerves and need a break without assuming it means divorce.I understand why Ferber had to stop writing these books - but I would have loved to have heard Emma on the 1920s.

By Kindle Customer I personally believe that Edna Ferber's books should be included with or even before the boring depressing books of the likes of Steinbeck and Hemingway and all the other men that they forced me to read in high school and college. Most of her books are a slice of American life written in approximately the same time period. This book must be an early one. It kind of attempts to address insanity, divorce, and the newspaper business. I didn't finish it, I just went back and reread Saratoga Trunk.
