5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Light of the western stars By raypal45 One of my favorite Zane Grey westerns of all time. Tightly written story with good plot. Nice descriptions of the western country( one of Mr. Grey's forte. Bad guys,noble heroes and an impossibly good heroine. No sex so suitable for most young people. However those who are politically correct may quibble at the descriptions of blacks, native Americans and Mexican-Americans. However that was the language of the times and we should not rewrite history to suit our own political beliefs.

You can skip the whole part from about 94% to 99% of the way through, which was almost entirely a very detailed and unnecessary description of a car ride. It might have been meant to draw out the suspense, but it was entirely too long for that - particularly since the payoff is very small. You read (or skim) pages after pages of descriptions of the harrowing drive for nothing, because the end is very unsatisfying - no romantic meeting or glimpse of the characters' happiness together or anything. Some people might like to "use their imaginations," but I would rather use my imagination for the hundreds of miles of driving and actually read about the characters' interaction. There are a lot of other unnecessary descriptions and plot devices as well, or parts that aren't particularly important that are drawn out. Lastly, throughout the book there are no real romantic scenes between the main characters - there's barely even any discernible romantic/sexual tension. And the guy isn't even present for about half the book. I for one didn't find it satisfying.

By Rich Summer If you are an aristocratic young lady that is getting jaded with touring Europe and high society functions, then why not decide to visit your black-sheep brother in the fairly tamed West. Of course he hasn't been to town to pick up your telegrams yet. This leaves you at the train station wondering why your brother isn't there. Then things get a tad hectic. So read it. It has an ending line I never expected to see in a Western.There is a lot more to the plot. The dynamics are interesting.Zane Grey was only about a half century ahead of his time. It seems like other westerns are imitations.He may actually spend too much time on his character's motivations. How can people that have a well-defined purpose or goal continually question themselves?As in most westerns the folks are bigger than life. The scenery is great. I think Louis L'Amour learned from him.Each of his novels has sent me to a dictionary a half-dozen to a dozen times. I don't believe I have a small vocabulary. I actually learn while reading a Western. LoL

This novella examines the spiritual question of the Soul--that elusive qualify in which mankind trusts. Can it be other than God-given? Can it be acquired through marriage or noble deeds, bartered or even sold outright? Does the possession of a soul make one's life easier or more difficult, one's moral decisions clearer or more complex? For humankind, a soul can prove a mixed blessing. But what would it do for supernatural being?This 175-year old fairy tale from the enchanted forests of Germany proves intensely poetic and romantic in style, yet it echoes medieval sagas of doomed emotional quests. The ageless theme warns of the danger resulting from the unnatural union between mortal and immortal. However, I discovered that this version (it's a translation) was different from the one my professor was discussing in class, which was a little frustrating because I could never properly search for a passage and find the pages the rest of the class was looking at, but that was my own fault. This is a beautiful translation that I recommend to anyone interested in gothic/slightly supernatural novels and/or Romantic Literature.

An Old Tale, But A Very Modern Feel to the Telling By Pop Bop Undine is a fairy-tale novella in which Undine, a water spirit, marries a knight named Huldebrand in order to gain a soul. It is an early German romance, but likely descended from earlier Continental tales about water-sprites who married mortals, but with conditions that ultimately led to tragedy. The story was published in English by at least 1909 and has been reprinted frequently. This Kindle freebie appears to be a copy taken from the "Told to the Children" series, which was a popular set of children's tales published in the early 1900's. This one was edited by Mary MacGregor, who did a number of books for the series.I haven't studied this closely but this appears to be a simplified and streamlined version of the Fouquee original. That was fine by me since I was reading this more out of curiosity than as a scholarly pursuit. If you like "meadows" instead of "verdure" this children's Kindle version might be the ticket. And, if you want a sophisticated fairy tale that is suitable for a romantic child reader, this could be a nice choice. It has comedy, tragedy, a love triangle, chivalry and human fraility, and (SPOILER) it all ends at a gravesite, so you know it's a heartstring tugger. Mostly I appreciated its narrative drive, clarity and modern feel.I read the Kindle freebie version of this and am happy to report that the formatting and scanning were satisfactory and the end result convenient and readable. So, while many of the old volumes that have been made available as Kindle freebies suffer from very poor transcription and formatting, this is not one of those. There are none of the Arthur Rackham illustrations that appear in hardbound volumes. That aside, this is a very nice find for readers who like to browse for interesting freebies.

She reminds us that while some of us may recall those days as a sort of innocent dreamtime, they were, in fact, just as filled with scandals, intrigues and shady characters as the House of Medici.Tenure, of course, is that condition which only exists in the University. Once it is bestowed, the tenured academic is lifted up to an Elysian Field from which he can look down at the struggling throng – and smile. The tenured one is un-fireable (provided one keeps one’s hands to oneself.) Of course, this knighthood is not easily acquired. The mountaintop can only be reached by tightrope. And it helps to have powerful friends. Therein lies Schultz’s tale.Chasing the Great God Tenure is a gracefully written story told by an author who actually lives in that rarified world of academia. Ago battles amid Academic Turf Wars By Amazon Customer In this book, Joanna Schultz has captured the atmosphere of a small university well, with its departmental in-fighting and turf wars on various administrative levels. This portrait is ironic, but telling. The characters caught up in the struggle are not always sympathetic, but the ones outside the fray, are. I was particularly drawn to one of the protagonists, Sophia Connors, as she negotiates relationships amid academic and financial stresses. I also appreciated the growing strength of Ellen Forley, who is in a relationship with the other main character, Albert Weismer. By Amazon Customer In her second novel, Joanna Schultz invites the reader to join the academic world at mediocre Midwest University in 1967, where academic fate seems inevitably linked to pure chance and other unexpected reasoning. In this environment, Dr. Weismer, just like everyone else, struggles with living up to expectations. The situation gets even worse when Dr. Weismer’s academic future is at stake and he is threatened to be denied tenure at Midwest. However, his former boring life then starts to take a rather unexpected turn and a real roller-coaster ride begins.Eloquently written and very, very funny.

First published in 1951, T. H. White's memoir describes with searing honesty his attempt to train a wild goshawk, a notoriously difficult bird to master. With no previous experience and only a few hopelessly out-of-date books on falconry as a guide, he set about trying to bend the will of his young bird, Gos, to his own.

Suffering setback after setback, the solitary and troubled White nonetheless found himself obsessively attached to the animal he hoped would one day set him free.

33 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Great book. By Dale Ward Mr. White describes his experiences with training a goshawk for falconry. He has no guidance beyond an ancient manuscript and things go horribly awry. An outstanding book, a pleasure to read. Also an example of why current US regulations require a falconry apprenticeship period.

34 of 38 people found the following review helpful. A wondeful book By Peter Hill Thanks are due to New York Review Books for putting back in print this wonderful book. The edition is well produced. A quibble is that Marie Winn who writes the introduction is clearly not familiar with ,or comfortable with ,"field sports". T H White (and many modern writers and followers of fishing,falconry and related actities) would take issue with her distinction between being a natural history lover and a practioner of fishing,shooting,ferreting etc. More seriously, she writes that White "blithely snagged salmon". White fished for salmon and caught them fairly using a fly. He wrote many fine passages about his salmon fishing and the pieces are still found in anthologies of fishing literature. To "snag" a salmon means ,to those who fish ,that he took salmon illegally and unsportingly, by jerking a hook into the body of a salmon.There is no evidence that I have heard of that he would ever have done this.To suggest it does his memory a grave disservice. The introduction by Steve Bodio,himself a falconer, to the 1996 Wilder Places edition of The Goshawk is,to my mind, far better at exploring and explaining the reasons why this is a much loved book.

White's memoir of trying to train a goshawk were it not for Helen Macdonald's wonderful analysis in H IS FOR HAWK, her recent account of training her own hawk. White, as he himself admits, does a lot of things wrong: feeding the bird far too much, for example. This horrifies Macdonald, and I expected it to horrify me too. But, because he is unaware of his mistakes at the time, what comes over has no cruelty in it whatsoever; frustration and occasional despair, yes, but otherwise just the very honest account of a lonely man's struggle to bond with this wild creature of the air.And beautifully written! Which surprised me a little, but I should have realized that the author of THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING (the source for CAMELOT and an inspiration for HARRY POTTER) would have pretty strong chops. But again, the amazing quality of Helen Macdonald's writing -- easily the best I had read all year -- had made me assume that no one could equal her. Wrong again! In fact, I realized that by embracing the comparison with White, Macdonald was writing for her life. "Goshawks were Hamlet, were Ludwig of Bavaria," writes White. "Frantic heritors of frenetic sires, they were in full health more than half insane. When the red rhenish wine of their blood pulsed at full spate through their arteries, when the airy bird bones were gas-filled with little bubbles of unbiddable warm virility, no merely human being could bend them to his will." For both writers, the elemental wildness of their captor-captive stirs them to flights of verbal magnificence on virtually every page. White, a former schoolmaster, calls upon a huge vocabulary -- words like banting, nasconded, silurian, circumbendibus, and perdue -- in addition to the technical language of falconry used by both writers: austringer, jesses, creance, bate, stoop, yarak, and the like. A further subliminal interest in White's writing is that this is the late 1930s, dictators every bit as imperious as White's hawk are flexing their talons over in Europe, and the idea of aerial combat to the death is no longer confined to the world of birds.The book is brilliant. But I have to say it is also a little boring. Good though White's writing is on the individual page, he is not nearly as good as Macdonald at giving the reader a sense of his progress overall. Perhaps because his mistakes are always sending him back towards the starting point, perhaps because of the journal format with day following day with little obvious pattern, I could never measure how far White had come towards his goal. And the last third or more of the book, which are mainly about White's efforts to trap birds of different sizes, lose momentum almost entirely. White is quite frank about his efforts as "a second-rate philosopher who lived alone in a wood, being tired of most humans in any case, to train a person who was not human," but of course the book is about the bird, not him. Macdonald's brilliance is to look into White's entire life, his homosexuality, his traumatic upbringing, and the sadistic tendencies he kept rigorously in check, to produce a psychosexual analysis that would have delighted Freud. Come to think of it, Marie Winn does something rather similar in her ten-page introduction to this edition, perhaps the best preface in any NYRB book that I have read. Either way, it needs this wider perspective. Without it, we get merely an elusive man in an ultimately frustrating struggle with an even more elusive bird. But a great writer.
