The Chicago Blackhawks’ 2015 postseason run culminated in the team’s third Stanley Cup since 2010, the sixth championship in the Original Six franchise’s history. The road to hoisting the Cup was the bumpiest of Chicago’s three titles under head coach Joel Quenneville. The Blackhawks finished third in the NHL’s Central Division following a season in which key players, including Patrick Kane and Corey Crawford, missed time due to injury. But the Hawks stormed past Nashville, Minnesota and Anaheim to set up a Stanley Cup Final matchup against a young, fast Tampa Bay Lightning team.  With new heroes emerging throughout the postseason, the Blackhawks battled through a tough, six-game first round series against Nashville before sweeping the Minnesota Wild to reach the Western Conference Final. In an epic series that featured three overtime contests, the Blackhawks overcame a 3-2 deficit to defeat the Ducks in seven games to advance to the Stanley Cup Final.  Packed with one of a kind analysis and stunning photography from the Chicago Tribune, Hawks Dynasty takes fans through the Blackhawks’ journey, from the crushing loss to the Los Angeles Kings in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals in 2014 through the final seconds against Tampa Bay. This commemorative edition also includes profiles of Kane, Crawford, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, Brandon Saad and Scott Darling.

Great Keepsake for Blackhawks fans to treasure the amazing 2015 Blackhawks Stanley Cup run By Ignatius Reilly As a big Blackhawks fan, I was excited to add this book to my library. It will be a great memento of an amazing year and Stanley Cup run for this Dynasty team.I love the included articles and selection of photos which I can return to over the years to re-live the excitement of the 2015 march to victory. My only disappointment with the book is that the editors didn't think to include a page with the entire team roster. I think that is an awful oversight because I believe most fans would like to know who made up the amazing 2015 Blackhawks when they look back.Well, if we are fortunate to win again somewhere down the road, I hope that they'll correct that error.

I wasn't sure at first if he would like it but once he saw it his eyes lit up. I knew he would enjoy keeping the highlights of this wonderful season fresh in his memory for years to come. This book highlights the hawks season with overviews of each game and full page photos to remind you of the joy you felt watching them over and over again.

By RexBanner It's a cool book with nice short recaps of every playoff game and a few other stories from throughout the season. The only thing I didn't like was the pictures they used to recap each game; they seemed pretty random. There weren't many that captured a memorable moment of the game, and a fair amount of them were photos of a Blackhawk getting roughed up which seemed like an odd choice.

A Breed Apart: The Horses And The Players, by Mike Helm

From Publishers Weekly This look at what goes on behind the scenes at the San Francisco Bay area's Golden Gate Fields will interest virtually everyone who has ever visited a racetrack. Helm, publisher of City Miner Books, takes readers on a tour of what the cognoscenti call "the backside," introducing us to trainers and assistants, jockeys, exercise riders and grooms, trackmen, veterinarians, stewards, owners and a racing secretary. He also interviews bettors who claim to have developed methods to beat the system. We're shown that innumerable elements are involved in a horse race, from the physiology and even the psychology of the horse and the sensitivity of trainer and jockey to the condition of the track, which can vary hour to hour, and the racing secretary's ability to furnish good competition. Readers looking to improve their handicapping skills will find Helm a knowledgeable, pragmatic consultant. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal This is an entertaining and refreshing look at the behind-the-scenes activities of horse racing. Written by a San Fran cisco Chronicle correspondent who is also a recreational horseplayer, the book is mostly a transcription of interviews with some of the sport's many participants. Included are conversations with a jockey, a trainer, and a veterinarian, who explain their respective roles in the sport. In the process, they reveal aspects of racing that are little known to most trackside enthusiasts and that might be useful to betting strategies. The book's interview style captures much of the color, character, and passion that is invariably a part of the horseracing environment. Very informative and highly readable, this can be digested purely for pleasure or for the handicapping insights which can be gleaned. Highly recommended for all sports collections.- David Van de Streek, Pennsylvania State Univ. Libs., YorkCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

In this book he explores all aspects of thoroughbred racing by visiting and speaking at length with all the people that have a role horse racing. This would include jockeys and their agents, trainers, owners, grooms, hotwalkers, exercise riders, vets including the track vet, stewards, the racing secretary, handicappers, gamblers, and parimutuel clerks. If I'm making it sound dry, it isn't. The passion for horses and the game is right on the surface all the way through. He also answers many questions I have asked myself: on what bases does a racing secretary assign weight? Why do they write a well-balanced card one day, and a full card of cheap claimers with an allowance thrown in as the feature on others? Do jockeys pay any attention to what the owner and trainer tell him before a race? Why do horses often run off form when bumped up in class? What do trainers really think? Why do stewards rarely take down a horse based on a jockey or trainer objection? Does anyone make money gambling on horses over the long haul? This is the kind of book you will enjoy reading, and can refer back to. I wish it had an index though.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Fast Paced Learning Experience By Rob C. Though not the ideal bok for the novice horseplayer, this book give insight and information most people interested in the thoroughbred racing game have no idea exists. Written by a reporter, the prose is quick and is filled with quotations by trainers, owners, jockeys and track officials in a real time, fast-paced dialog that is powerful but sometimes difficult to keep up with. There is no glossary or index of terms and many of the terms used are over the heads of those just learning about horse racing. This book is focused toward a betting audience or readers who currently follow racing and want to learn the intricacies of this most captivating sport.Funny and hard hitting, this is good read and for the most part well done. Again, not for those just making a foray into this unseen world of lovely mounts and high stakes, but a good book to get acquainted with what happens before and after the starting gate opens.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting book on horseracing. By R. Pandolfo This book is well written and has several interesting chapters that delve into different aspects of horse racing. Very good chapter with a leading trainer offers details about the training of horses and there are good chapters with gamblers, jockey agent, the track racing secretary, etc. One of the better books on horse racing that I've read. As a handicapper, this does give pretty solid handicapping insights, although it's not really a book on handicappping.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. There's more to English football than Premier League By BostonLFC As an American who follows one of the Big (Money) Four clubs in the Premier League, this was an enlightening read that helped open my eyes to what else the English game has to offer. In reading of the history of Liverpool FC, it's hard not to come across names of clubs that have fallen to the periphery of Football--Preston North End where the great Bill Shankly and Tom Finney played, historic rivals Leeds United, and the old powerhouse Leicester fill stories of what once was, but where are they now? I was partly resigned to write these teams off as just existing in the lower tiers of the English Football Association with a small chance of being relevant if they happened to gain promotion into the Premiership. Price helps show that clubs playing in League 2 should not be written off, but instead embraced and supported with just as much, of not more, passion than their big brothers in the Premier League. This book is more than just a personal journey of dropping Manchester United fandom for a local League 2 side; Price digs in brings out the financial inequities in modern Football and hammers home that it's all about the money. As a fan, of course I'm aware that the rich are very very rich and the poor just can't compete. The simple fact that I can run down the street to a store fully stocked with Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Man U kits absolutely plays into that. Even in the states, it's easier to purchase a Wayne Rooney Man U shirt than it is to purchase a Jermaine Jones or Clint Dempsey MLS shirt. Later today, Shrewsbury Town will take on Chelsea in the League Cup (whatever it's called now), and I look forward to cheering on the League 2 underdogs against the Premier League leaders.Overall, this is a fantastic journey that chronicles the massive choice to stop following the most successful Premier League club in favor of a local club that only survived relegation out of the League 2 by goal differential. Price investigates life after football, struggles during a League 2 playing career, and the personal connection that a tiny club has to it's small band of ever loyal supporters. Great read! I would recommend this to those who know no other life than Premier League...which is on every Saturday and Sunday morning s and is more accessible in the US than it is in the UK...target audience of millions of untapped consumers maybe?

When a sheet of cavorite is prematurely processed, it makes the air above it weightless and shoots off into space. Bedford sees in the commercial production of cavorite a possible source of "wealth enough to work any sort of social revolution we fancied; we might own and order the whole world".[3] Cavor hits upon the idea of a spherical spaceship made of "steel, lined with glass", and with sliding "windows or blinds" made of cavorite by which it can be steered, and persuades a reluctant Bedford to undertake a voyage to the moon; Cavor is certain there is no life there

The First Men in the Moon, by H. G. Wells

About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

Sci-Fi Classic By Arizona Bookworm The First Men in the Moon It's great to see that one of H.G.'s enduring classics is now handily produced for your Kindle or iPhone. It is a "must read" for all fans of classic sci-fi. It's a quick read so it makes a good travel book. If you haven't read it before, it will seem outdated (or even a little cheesy in some places) by today's standards. However, it is an excellent starter story for younger readers, whereas "War of the Worlds" might be a little scary. A great addition to my "free" collection.

23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. A Memorable Adventure with Surprising Underpinnings By Gary F. Taylor Born in Victorian England, H.G. Wells had very strong ideas about the advantages and disadvantages of a society built on fixed social classes and endless imperialism--and these ideas would inform virtually everything he wrote over his long and distinguished career. Even in the handful of science fiction novels for which he is chiefly recalled today, Wells would return to these issues again, combining them with then-emerging scientific concepts to remarkably provocative effect. In some respects THE FIRST MEN ON THE MOON is likely his most accessible novel to modern readers, for it is lighter in tone than such Wells novels as THE TIME MACHINE and THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, and it reads like an exceptionally well-written pulp adventure of the era. But the underpinnings are the same: class, conquest, and--as in THE WAR OF THE WORLDS--Darwin's controversial theories on natural selection and evolution. In this novel Wells relies significantly on fantasy, presenting us with Professor Cavor, an eccentric (and quite comical) scientist determined to create a substance that is "opaque" to gravity, what we would today call an antigravity material. Cavor is interested in the work for the sake of knowledge pure and simple, but bankrupt businessman Bedford realizes the commercial implications and attaches himself to the project--and when the material is perfected the two men create a sphere that launches them to the moon!If this is clearly the stuff of fantasy (Jules Verne sneered at it), what the two men find on the moon is not, or at least was not considered so at the time. In 1901 little was known about the moon, and many notable scientists thought it might hold life. Upon their arrival, Cavor and Bedford find an atmosphere of sorts, a host of strange plants, and ultimately an insect-like race of beings that reside inside the moon itself, beings who practice forced evolution upon their own kind in order to create a rigid, hive-like social structure. As the nature of the "Selenite" society reflects Victorian concepts of fixed social classes taken to a logical and unpleasant extreme, so do the two humans reflect opposing points of sociopolitical view. Cavor is clearly an instrument of science, less interested in practicalities than in knowledge for its own sake--a point of view that Wells seems to hold in considerable sympathy. But for all this, Cavor is ineffectual; he must rely on Bedford's smash-and-grab imperialistic temperament to see them through. As in many Wells novels, the resulting clash of ideology is stalemate: both extremes need each other, but they are incapable of building compromise and neither is able to overcome the other to reach an outcome that will be satisfactory to any one concerned. All of this sounds terribly dry and dusty, but the book itself isn't. THE FIRST MEN IN THE MOON is a remarkably lively novel, a fast-paced quick read that will appeal greatly to most readers as it balances its philosphical questions with great chunks of pulse-pounding adventure. And even though we know that Wells was off the mark re lunar atmosphere, flora, and fauna, it is easy to suspend our disbelief to enjoy the ride. Recommended.GFT, Amazon Reviewer

Wells at his best By Daniel Jolley The title seems a little strange, but the Moon as imagined by Wells is inhabited by creatures living underground--thus, the title. The plot is typical of the author--a seemingly normal man happens to meet a man with strange scientific ideas, and he quickly finds himself an active participant in the grand designs of his new acquaintance. Mr. Bedford, our narrator, escapes to as quiet and isolated a space as he can find in order to write a play. His hideaway is visited every night by a strange little man with a penchant for humming. Accosting the man for his nightly interruptions, he learns that the man, Dr. Cavor, is a scientist working to find a means by which to nullify gravity. Seeing the possibility of great profit from such a discovery, the narrator quickly enlists as a scientific assistant. The serendipitous discovery of Cavorite results in the scientist's home being destroyed and the surrounding countryside buffeted and damaged by powerful winds. With the discovery now made, Cavor embarks on a monumental quest to reach the moon by creating a huge sphere--a coating of Cavorite provides the means of locomotion, and a complex system of blinds serves as the means for controlling the thing. With the blinds closed, all gravitational forces are blocked from the sphere; with one or more blinds open, the sphere is once again subject to the gravitational pull of the nearest large object. In this fashion, the intrepid explorers make their way to the moon. The moon they discover is not barren; in daylight, a bevy of plants emerge from the ground only to wither and die as the lunar night returns. When the explorers lose their way, they are captured and taken underground. While Cavor wants to communicate with the Selenites, as he immediately dubs the lunar inhabitants, Bedford is more concerned with escape and eventually effects just that, having found the moon dwellers easy prey to his strong, earthgrown muscles. The two men search for the sphere, but Bedford is forced to escape the moon alone after learning that Cavor has been captured and presumably killed. Bedford returns to earth, tells his story to some incredulous beach dwellers, and then finds the sphere hijacked by a young boy (who flies off and is never heard from again). Thus, he has no way of returning to the moon, nor does he have the knowledge required to make more Cavorite. A short time later, Bedford is amazed to learn that Cavor is not dead and is in fact sending radio signals from the moon to the earth. The rest of the novel relates the story of Cavor's stay on the moon, culminating in a description of his interview with the Grand Lunar. In lunar society, each individual is assigned a certain job and is trained and even surgically altered to do that job and nothing else. Cavor's description of earthly society is a revelation to the lunar inhabitants; through his words, Wells seems to point out some of the follies of mankind, particularly war. Thus, the book ends on sort of a philosophical note, and one has to imagine that Cavor's speech reflects some of Wells' own views about humankind. All in all, the book is interesting, well-paced, and enjoyable. The originality of Wells' idea is striking--rather than propel man to the moon by huge cannon or the like, he employs antigravity as a free, highly effective means to, in essence, repel the sphere from the earth. Of course, Wells' moon is a far cry from the moon as we now know it, but it does seem to fit well into the framework of thinking at the time, at least insomuch as Wells describes those contemporary scientific ideas. Though not the most recognized of his books, The First Men in the Moon may be the most original and visionary science fiction novel penned by this pioneering author.

For some, we can take this knowledge for granted, but we can forget how difficult it was to learn. For those who read this book, the learning needn't cost so much turmoil. It's all right there in easy to read chapters, so fantastically organized. It removes all the mystique.

Urbinati can claim as much experience with play readings as anybody on earth, and has produced a dense, exceptionally detailed, quite readable book explaining how to present the text of a play to an audience. He understands the various reasons for having a reading, and that different sorts of readings often require different approaches.Readings used to be a fairly informal process, but in the past few decades their use has exploded. Plays are read as part of a workshopping process, they are read to interest theaters, or potential investors, or audience members. As a result, a number of best practices have evolved that allow the text to be best represented, short of putting together a staged production. Urbinati walks you through these best-practices, and, as a result, the book is invaluable to anyone who might be involved in a play reading, from producers to actors to playwrights.

By Amazon Customer Having started out "winging it" with play readings and then developing a better appreciation for what is at stake for the playwright, I respect the care and detail that Rob has taken with writing a book like this to give precise directions while also offering contradictory viewpoints about this very specific area of theatre. It is a valuable resource for the discipline and industry.
