About the Author The best-known of the French Romantic writers, Victor Hugo was a poet, novelist, dramatist, and political critic. Hugo was an avid supporter of French republicanism and advocate for social and political equality, themes that reflect most strongly in his works Les Mis?rables, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), and Le Dernier jour d'un condamn? (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). Hugo's literary works were successful from the outset, earning him a pension from Louis XVIII and membership in the prestigious Acad?mie fran?aise, and influencing the work of literary figures such as Albert Camus, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe, Hugo played an active role in French politics through the 1848 Revolution and into the Second and Third Republics. Hugo died in 1885, revered not only for his influence on French literature, but also for his role in shaping French democracy. He is buried in the Panth?on alongside Alexandre Dumas and ?mile Zola.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A masterpiece By Carlos Roso I read this book decades ago, now I'm just searching it for my son who is finishing his studies in France. This is not a review of a particular edition, it's a stating on the original french text of "Le dernier jour d'un condamné". This work is a masterpiece of literature of all times. It is written in the first person, the title tells it all, now it's up to you to find the best EN translation or to read it in FR. You won't be deceived: this text belongs to the cultural heritage of mankind.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Oh, Hugo! By Priscilla Rice A set of very interesting stories from the teen-aged Hugo. It's hard to believe her wrote "Bug Jargal" when he was only 17, but a great deal of that youthful heroism, adventure-seeking, and action story comes through in the story. This is also a good read for those interested in the Haitian revolution and independence, neatly woven into stories in which Hugo's own royalist ideas come through.

For him, capital punishment can never be administered fairly and justly.

A Trio of Girls and Their Off-Key Father By Amazon Customer I read this in late 2013, and was sorry to see that there were such delays in publication. So if there were any major changes in the book, I wouldn't know. In any case, this is a book that had the potential to be absolutely amazing, and unfortunately fell a little short. On the one hand, the book feels almost like it was written by only one person, which should have been a good thing. However on the other hand, there wasn't enough difference in the four voices to make them seem like separate individuals.This doesn't mean that the book isn't well written, because it is and very much so. The prose is both evocative and simple, with a good balance between the external forces that pull these people through the action, and the internal struggles that motivate how each of them acts. WHEN HE HAS A CAR ACCIDENT, THEY REACH OUT TO HIS DAUGHTER, CASS. SHE HASN'T SEEN HIM SINCE SHE WAS A CHILD. SHE HAS HER OWN LIFE AND HE IS NOT HER REAL FATHER. WITH THE HELP OF AMOS' MALE NURSE, THEY MAKE CONTACT WITH HIS TWO DAUGHTERS. THEY ARE IN THE SAME BOAT AS CASS. WHEN HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR MOTHER WENT SOUTH, SO DID HE. LITTLE DOES AMOS REALIZE HOW HIS ABANDONMENT AFFECTED THESE WOMEN. I'M SURE THAT THERE ARE MANY OF US THAT CAN RELATE TO THIS STORY. IT WAS A GOOD READ AND I TRULY ENJOYED IT.

By DC Avid Reader This was a well written collaboration by three best selling African-American authors; J.D. Mason, ReShonda Tate Billingsley and Bernice McFadden in their perspective voices. The main character, Amos, a musician, who has always had a carefree and nonchalant attitude when it came to family. Amos is the father of three daughters, and abandoned them and their mothers all under different circumstances. Amos loved his daughters' mothers, but could not commit to steady and meaningful relationships with them. Amos' commitment and loyalty was only to the ebony and ivory keys of the beloved piano, no matter the cost. The only true love affair he had was with his music, which he was drawn to like a moth to a flame. Now that Amos has gotten older, suffering from a touch of dementia and an automobile accident, which landed him in a medical facility, he has no family to care and look after him. Eventually, all three of Amos' daughters are notified of his whereabouts and condition, which brought them together to talk about their past and their hopes for the present and future. Amos' daughters were hesitant about reconnecting with their father, after many years of abandonment, but he expressed his true feelings of love to each of them, and his regrets of his past treatment and abandonment of them and their mothers. Father and daughters make amends, but can the love that was once lost, ever be found and recovered again!!

Speaks to the game's beginnings, positions, training, and techniques as explained by Walter Camp, the man who developed the game, loved it, and obviously wanted to give back. The game has evolved and continues to evolve, but the basics are still applicable. It's obvious the game of Walter Camp, especially the attitude of players, was never intended to become what it is today. It is hoped those who read this book would be humbled. I was.

Like two books in one...neither hits the mark By likeparty Book One: A simple entry level treatise on fish, flies, fishing, knots, techniques, and hatches. A little elementary for most but actually quite useful if you are new to Idaho, western fish, or cold water fishing.Book Two: An almost overly detailed atlas of river systems. Without a map in hand, it is almost impossible to figure out where you are or how to get into the river systems. I think if you are an advanced fisherman, you will find this type of detail almost redundant. You can figure out the access points and camping situation from either detailed local maps or an atlas type map/book. There is not enough information to save you the time needed on the ground to find the spots either.Atlas? Get the Benchmark "Idaho Road and Recreation Atlas".Fishing book? Get "Fishing Idaho" by Joe Evancho

A Wrestling Life of this Magnitude is worth more than 140 pages By rballjones A series of vignettes (short tales of his life), evidently told by Gable and written by Schulte. There is more here about Gable's personal life than I expected--and it is welcome. His life and accomplishments--he is clearly one of the greatest athletes and coaches ever--are certainly inspirational. That being said, the book feels overly edited and fairly begs for more. More content. More detail.

The book is told by Dan Gable and written by Scott Schulte. They take you through the vast accomplishments and struggles Dan Gable encountered. Although the book is short, you will be inspired by the life of an ordinary Iowan. Dan Gable will give you life lessons learned by him that will teach you what perseverance is all about. Through the child hood that couldn’t have been more tragic than it was. Through his college days Dan Gable sheds light on how important family should be in your life. You will see how these events didn’t stop him from slowing down his pace nor knock him off the track of becoming the most dominate wrestler of all time. These times actually motivated him to become closer and stronger to his family. As you read through his life you see one outstanding factor that helps him accumulate the dominance in his wrestling career; that is his focus. You see Dan Gable develop a type of focus only known to men in combat or surgeons would have. The amount of time spent training in the gym, wrestling with friends, and running along cars is all for his one goal. When he transfers over to his professional career, it doesn’t stop his focus or his determination. Your veins will be pumping pure of patriotism after learning, in great detail, of his Olympic matches and preparation. You wonder what can this guy accomplish next. The tragic events that shape his life makes you see how real and human he is. Dan Gable realizes that his talent on the mat is just as good as his talent in corner of one. You are electrified by the passion he brings to his coaching career and his athletes. This book is a great read no matter whom you are.

This was an incredible insight to Gable's early years and his growth as an athlete and young man! Most interesting was that nearly all of the book was new stries about Dan and his success, the lessons he learned and the way he coached! Great read!
