“San Diego Motorsports 100 Racing Years — A Johnny McDonald Collection” was originally published in 2008. Today, it is back in print, complete with the original front and back cover art by the late Bob McCoy. The book begins in 1907, with the antics of Barnstormin’ Barney Oldfield, and continues through the years, with coverage of racing exploits in San Diego, Balboa Park (including a race in conjunction with the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, now celebrating its centennial), Barona, Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Coronado, Del Mar, El Cajon, La Jolla, Lakeside, Miramar, Mission Bay, Mission Beach, National City, Pacific Beach, Point Loma, Otay Mesa, Ramona, Torrey Pines, Riverside, Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Long Beach, Maywood, Hollywood, Baja California and beyond. McDonald focuses on such well-known personalities as Jerry Baltes, “Wild” Bob Burman, “Bad Bill” Carlson, Earl Cooper, Raffaele “Ralph” DePalma, “Rajo” Jack DeSoto, Chet Gardner, Al Gordon, Dan Gurney, Jimmie Johnson, Parnelli Jones, Earl Mansell, Rex Mays, Curly Mills, Roger Penske, Don Prudhomme, Eddie Rickenbacker, Ivan “Ironman” Stewart, Mickey Thompson and many others, along with future actress Raquel Welch, the San Diego beauty queen who awarded trophies to race winners. In addition, the author puts the spotlight on every type of racing you can imagine, including auto, hot rod, midget, jalopy, sports car, modified and drag, along with motocross, supercross, dune buggies, stock cars, hydroplanes and monster trucks. McDonald, a San Diego County-based writer, has a passion for automobiles and racing that hasn’t diminished in his 60-plus-year writing career. “San Diego Motorsports 100 Racing Years” is filled with hundreds of historic photos of major people and events from McDonald’s own collection, which includes more than 800 auto and motorcycle racing images and countless programs, press kits and other memorabilia. It was all made possible by the author’s work as a former co-promoter of motorsports events at four Southern California fairs, his service on the public relations staffs at the Del Mar Fair and Qualcomm Stadium, and his positions as a former marketing director for the San Diego Automotive Museum and consultant for the Hall of Champions. “I look back and wonder how I did so many things!” he said in June 2015. Williams Savage Books is proud to reprint “San Diego Motorsports 100 Racing Years — A Johnny McDonald Collection.”

Freddie Rooke gazed coldly at the breakfast-table. Through a gleaming eye-glass he inspected the revolting object which Parker, his faithful man, had placed on a plate before him. "Parker!" His voice had a ring of pain. "Sir?" "What's this?" "Poached egg, sir." Freddie averted his eyes with a silent shudder. "It looks just like an old aunt of mine," he said. "Remove it!" He got up, and, wrapping his dressing-gown about his long legs, took up a stand in front of the fireplace. From this position he surveyed the room, his shoulders against the mantelpiece, his calves pressing the club-fender. It was a cheerful oasis in a chill and foggy world, a typical London bachelor's breakfast-room. The walls were a restful gray, and the table, set for two, a comfortable arrangement in white and silver.

The Little Warrior, by P. G. Wodehouse

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (P. G. Wodehouse) was an English humorist and writer best known for his Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels. Educated at boarding schools, Wodehouse turned to writing at a young age, demonstrating great skill at humorous sketches and musical lyrics. He continued to write part-time while pursuing, at the behest of his father, a career in banking, and successfully contributed numerous pieces to Punch, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Express, among other publications. In addition to his literary work, Wodehouse was incorporated into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of his collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes, his lyrics to the song Bill from Show Boat, and his work on the musicals Rosalie and The Three Musketeers.

While interned along with other British citizens in Germany during the Second World War, Wodehouse made a series of radio broadcasts for which he was accused of being a collaborator; and, although later cleared of the charges, he never returned to England. His work has influenced many other writers including Evelyn Waugh, Rudyard Kipling, J. K. Rowling, and John Le Carr?. P. G. Wodehouse died in 1975 at the age of 93.

There's no Jeeves here, but many memorable characters, including a sort of Wooster. It's a more ambitious novel than some of the Jeeves work, although less comical. It's touching in a Hollywood sort of way - before there was a Hollywood. Thumbs up.

Tam O' the Scoots, by Edgar Wallace

About the Author Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace was born illegitimately in Greenwich, London, in 1875 to actors Mary Jane Richards and T.H. Edgar. As an infant he was adopted by George Freeman, a porter at Billingsgate fish market. Aged eleven, Wallace sold newspapers at Ludgate Circus and upon leaving school took a job with a printer. He later enlisted in the Royal West Kent Regiment, before transferring to the Medical Staff Corps, and was sent to South Africa. In 1898, he published a collection of poems called 'The Mission that Failed', and subsequently left the army to become correspondent for Reuters. South African war correspondent for 'The Daily Mail' followed and his articles were later published as 'Unofficial Dispatches'. His outspokenness infuriated Lord Kitchener, who removed his credentials. He then edited the 'Rand Daily Mail', but gambled disastrously on the South African Stock Market. Returning to England, Wallace at first reported on crimes and hanging trials, before becoming editor of 'The Evening News'. It was in 1905 that he founded the Tallis Press, publishing 'Smithy', a collection of soldier stories, and 'The Four Just Men'. The latter was published with the ending removed as an advertising stunt and he offered oe500 to readers who could successfully guess the ending. Unfortunately, many did and he was almost bankrupted. At various times Wallace also worked as a journalist on 'The Standard', 'The Star', 'The Week-End Racing Supplement' and 'The Story Journal'. In 1917, he became a Special Constable at Lincoln's Inn and also a special interrogator for the War Office. The Daily Mail sent Wallace to investigate atrocities in the Belgian Congo, a trip that provided material for his 'Sanders of the River' books. In 1923, he became Chairman of the Press Club and in 1931 stood as a Liberal Parliamentary candidate for Blackpool. Wallace's first marriage in 1901 to Ivy Caldecott, daughter of a missionary, ended in divorce in 1918 and he later married his much younger secretary, Violet King. Along with countless articles, some 23 screenplays and many short stories, Wallace wrote more than 170 books, which have been translated into 28 languages and sales of which have exceeded 50 million copies. Over 160 films have been made from his books - more than any other author. In the 1920's one of Wallace's many publishers claimed that a quarter of all books read in England were written by him. His sales were exceeded only by 'The Bible'. He died in 1932 whilst working on the screenplay for 'King Kong', having moved to Hollywood after being offered a contract by RKO.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun & Interesting Read By Amazon Customer I really enjoyed Tam o' the Scoots. It does require that you get into the Scottish dialect in the story. I normally don't like books that have a lot of this sort of dialect, but I found the rhythm in this story very easy to adapt to within a very few pages. In spite of the story taking place in the midst of the horror of World War I, I found Tam's "get 'er done" attitude so positive that it set the tone for the book. The best parts of the book were the descriptions of his aerial feats in his various flying machines. They were so well done that I felt like I was up there soaring along with Tam. Importantly, the book came to a satisfactory ending. I heartily recommend reading Edgar Wallace's Tam o' the Scoots.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Rolicing fun! By Movie-Maven Loved this very funny story of the poetic and brave ace of the skies set during WWI.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Couldn't finish it By Fantasyman I'm only rating this one two stars. I couldn't finish this book. Somehow I don't really feel like I missed much. I read a ways into it before I gave up, it's really not a novel, it is more a collection of vignettes. In the end they all seemed the same to me. I couldn't get into the character and the author's attempts to render the Scottish vernacular and brogue into legible prose left me struggling to make sense of the dialog.I've read several other books by Edgar Wallace that I enjoyed, sadly, I couldn't finish this one. When Bernadette Murphy’s brother, Mark, dies unexpectedly, her world is rocked. Jenny, the wife he left behind, skips grieving and goes straight into survival mode. That is, until she shows up at Bernie’s door in tears, holding a battered canvas journal in which Mark—once obsessed with adventure—had listed larger-than-life travel destinations.

Before losing her brother, life had been great for Bernie—a new career and a nice romance—even though she wavers on her boyfriend’s proposal and wears her diamond engagement ring on a cord around her neck instead of on her finger. But inspired by Mark’s unique bucket list, Bernie puts her mom, her dog, her best friend’s angsty teenager, and Jenny into a borrowed RV and sets off on a cross-country road trip, sharing quirky adventures and unexpected turns along the way.

But Bernie can’t run forever. Will she find a way to let go of the past, heal her losses, and open herself to life’s new possibilities?

By RobynKFLNJ Bernadette Murphy, known as Bernie to her friends and family, has a great life surrounded by her family, a wonderful man, her friends, and her dog. When her older brother Mark dies suddenly and unexpectedly, her world starts to crumble around her. Her sister-in-law Jenny shows up at her door one day with a book that Mark had written with all the places he wanted to go. It consisted of many of "the world's largest" attractions. Bernie wanted to take a road trip with her mom, Jenny, and her best friend Dianne to fulfill Mark's bucket list. With the help of her neighbor whose brother owns a recreational vehicle, Bernie learns how to drive the rv and is lent the vehicle so she can take the road trip. She finally convinces her mother, Jenny, and Dianne to take the trip with her. At the last minute Dianne backs out and sends her seventeen year old daughter Ashley in her place. Ashley wants to be anywhere but on this road trip. Her mom and Jenny aren't too thrilled to be there either. Bernie's boyfriend also shows up with her dog to see her off, because he's going on a road trip of his own, so Bernie sets out on her adventure with her mom, Jenny, Ashley and her dog Poindexter in tow. They set out for a three week, several thousand mile trip of the United States to visit the places on Mark's list and check off the sites they visit along the way. She also picks up souvenirs to keep as mementos of their adventure. The women initially find themselves at each other's throat, each dealing with their own lives in their own way. They finally start opening up to each other, actually get along, and start enjoying this adventure. They meet a wonderful woman named Myrtle and Bernie starts to reevaluate her own life. This was a wonderful book that really touched me and I couldn't put it down. This book definitely deserves more than five stars, but that's all they'll allow me to give. :) Kathleen Long is a phenomenal author and I highly recommend this book. I received a copy of Counting Stars in exchange of a fair and honest review.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. It's all about the journey! By JAR Counting Stars, by Kathleen Long, is her second book featuring Bernadette "Bernie" Murphy. Bernie is a columnist who lives with her big shaggy dog, Poindexter in the same neighborhood as her fiancé, that is if she ever makes it official. Life was going along rather smoothly until the sudden death of her older brother, Mark, from the same ailment as their dad a few years back. Now, Bernie isn't doing so well, writer's block has arrived with her grief and she doesn't see a way back to where she was. That is, until her sister-in-law, Jenny, brings her Mark's bucket list, the journal he began as a kid of the big places he wanted to see someday. It is at this point that Bernie comes up with the idea that they need to take a road trip to see these places, especially when she learns that Mark's most recent entries were just before his death. Bernie suggests that Jenny, her mom, Anne, her best friend, Diane, and she go check off Mark's list as a way to deal with their grief. In a borrowed RV, the ladies, with a substitution of Diane's teenage daughter, Ashley, and the addition of Poindexter, begin the journey, with the destinations Mark had written about, sketched, and taped clipped articles to the pages. But as the saying goes, "it is not the destination, but the journey that counts."And this journey is one of love and healing, secrets and sharing, and friends and family. Their course may be true, but wrong turns along the way brings them to a good homecoming. This story is sometimes intense in emotions, sometimes funny, and always page turning. I thoroughly enjoyed Counting Stars and highly recommend it.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Very Emotional By Sarah53121 I was given an ARC of Counting Stars from NetGalley for an honest review and this is my review. This book was a very good book about loss and how to find your way again after someone you care about is gone unexpectedly. I liked how Bernie tried to help her mom and her sister-in-law deal with the unexpected passing of her brother by forcing them all to go on a road trip to all the places he wanted to see since he was a child. Even though the group, including an unhappy seventeen year-old, did not want to go at first over time the group manages to work through a number of squabbles, problems of their own and their grief to learn a lot about themselves, family, dealing with grief and putting your past to rest. This was a well written book with a lot of emotion and a number of likeable characters. I am not going give spoilers but like I said the book takes you through the whole process of how Bernie tries to honor her brother and at the same time tries to help herself, mother and sister-in-law in the grief process and in my opinion the writer did a very good job with it in this story.I am giving Counting Stars four out of five stars.

My name is Brendon Osmond. I'm a 25 year old post-graduate student who knows three things with absolute conviction. I know damn near everything there is to know about keeping in peak physical shape. I have a plan to make a lot of money from that knowledge. I'm an optimist who's not easily rattled. But then the girl I fell in love with almost two years ago texts me out of the blue and everything I know is thrown out the window.

Am I rattled? No.

Not until I fly to the other side of the world and discover the girl I fell for has kept a very big secret from me.

A secret that mocks all my knowledge of the human body and how to keep it healthy.

A secret that shatters my plans for my own personal training business.

A secret with my eyes.

A secret who needs me more than I can comprehend.

Ask me again if I'm rattled.

Now ask me if I'm still in love.

Perfect for fans of The Fault in Our Stars, Nicholas Sparks and Jodi Picoult, Unforgettable is the second book in the Always series that began with Unconditional.

Tears, laughter and everything in between in this heartfelt romance By Maria Rose This is the type of story that might be considered an 'ugly cry' book, the ones where you need a box of tissues on hand. At the least, if you aren't the type to cry easily, you'll get some tears in your eyes with this story of love and loss and forgiveness.Brendon and Amanda shared a brief relationship when she was at school in Australia, one that affected Brendon so deeply that when she returned home to San Diego, he followed her there. But she broke his heart when she told him there could be no future between them. He returned to Australia and tried to put her out of his heart and mind - a move that was working until she contacts him unexpectedly in need of his help. He travels back to San Diego and discovers that he has a son, an 18 month old who is dying of leukemia. Shocked and bewildered, Brendon has to make some choices - ones that will affect his life, Amanda's and his son too. Can there be a happy ending for this family in turmoil?Wow! Talk about a shock to the system. You have to feel for Brandon in this story, reuniting with his old love, a woman who didn't tell him about his child. The story is told from Brendon's point of view so you get all of his feels on this one - the shock, the betrayal, the deep feelings he still has for Amanda (both positive and negative), the pure emotions of joy and grief for his son. Amanda's reasons for the initial breakup and why she kept Tanner's presence from Brendon are explained and are understandable, but no less heartbreaking for the fact that he's missed this time with his son. And of course, the prospect of a child with cancer, the hospital visits, all the tearjerking emotions that go with that. See, I'm telling you, keep that tissue handy! Despite the serious nature of the story there are some lighthearted moments, and some sexy ones too, as Brendon and Amanda reconnect on a physical level as well as an emotional one. Thankfully there is a happy ending too, making the story worth reading and one you can't put down until you get to that end. 4 stars.

It's beautiful, tear you to pieces but it is soo beautiful. In this book there are several excellent things. One is that the whole book is written as male pov. The book is really well written. In the same way loose and funny as the first part, only this time from the side of guy. Brendon is wonderful and my new book-boyfriend. It starts very funny. You are enjoying every moment of it. Absolutely hilarious.Maybe that's why even more this moment in which you realize what goes wrong in this story, is devastating. I admire the courage of writing about it. Emotional and beautiful even in the most difficult moments. At the same time you cry with laughter, and cry with grief. I do not want to give anything away to spoil reading it. But a comparison with The Fault in Our Stars is accurate. And one more is that practically the entire action happens in not longer than two or three days? How great is that? I have no words!Another thing is great team of friends and family, as usual, this makes the book even better. In my opinion great secondary characters are the key to success. Once again we have here our heroes from previous story, Maci and Raphael. Heather is awesome as always. And now come the heroes of the next part Caden and Chase, which story is going to be really amazing. They are pretty awesome characters who were a big part of Unforgettable.
