7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. An Interesting Stepping Stone By Sean Ares Hirsch Many people would like to say that Shakespeare did not write this play. But this is hardly fair. Even with the world's finest writers such as Marlowe and Dickens, not every single thing they write can be a masterpiece. But what makes "The Two Gentleman of Verona" worth reading? Well, Shakespeare presents us with a valid theme. (Conflicts often exist between romance and friendship.) There is also beautiful language. Launce and his dog offer some interesting comedy as well as a beautiful and memorable passage in 2.3. The scene where Valentine is accepted amonst the outlaws is memorable. This is Shakespeare's first play where a woman (Julia) disuises herself as man to do some investigating. It is also easy to see that several elements of this play were used in "Romeo and Juliet." To be sure, this is not a masterpiece like "The Comedy of Errors," "Richard III," or "King Lear." But it is still an good study that is worth some interest.

The Archetype of Later Romantic Comedies By Donald Mitchell Although few would claim that Two Gentlemen of Verona is one of Shakespeare's greatest plays, it is well worth reading in order to serve as a reference for the best of his romantic comedies. In essence, Two Gentlemen of Verona gives you a measuring stick to see the brilliance in the best works.The play has the first of Shakespeare's many brave, resourceful and cross-dressing heroines, Julia.Shakespeare always used his fools and clowns well to make serious statements about life and love, and to expose the folly of the nobles. Two Gentlemen of Verona has two very fine comic scenes featuring Launce. In one, he lists the qualities of a milk maid he has fallen in love with and helps us to see that love is blind and relative. In another, he describes the difficulties he has delivering a pet dog to Silvia on his master, Proteus', behalf in a way that will keep you merry on many a cold winter's evening.The story also has one of the fastest plot resolutions you will ever find in a play. Blink, and the play is over. This nifty sleight of hand is Shakespeare's way of showing that when you get noble emotions and character flowing together, things go smoothly and naturally.The overall theme of the play develops around the relative conflicts that lust, love, friendship, and forgiveness can create and overcome. Proteus is a man who seems literally crazed by his attraction to Silvia so that he loses all of his finer qualities. Yet even he can be redeemed, after almost doing a most foul act. The play is very optimistic in that way.I particularly enjoy the plot device of having Proteus and Julia (pretending to be a page) playing in the roles of false suitors for others to serve their own interests. Fans of Othello will enjoy these foreshadowings of Iago.The words themselves can be a bit bare at times, requiring good direction and acting to bring out the full conflict and story. For that reason, I strongly urge you to see the play performed first. If that is not possible, do listen to an audio recording as you read along. That will help round out the full atmosphere that Shakespeare was developing here.After you finish Two Gentlemen of Verona, think about where you would honor friendship above love, where equal to love, and where below love. Is friendship less important than love? Or is friendship merely less intense? Can you experience both with the same person?Enjoy close ties of mutual commitment . . . with all those you feel close to!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. One of my favorite plays. By M. Mattson "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays. Maybe that's because it's one of the only one's I understand. My youth Theatre did a wonderful production of this play. I was not in it, but I saw it twice. It was set in the 60's, peasant-shirted and bell-bottomed. I think it's a wonderful story, although a bit unrealistic because of all the forgiveness that happens at the end of the play. But I think that it's a play everyone should read. This edition of the play is, I think, a very good one. If you are planning to buy a copy of "The Two Gentlemen of Verona," I would advise you to buy the most current edidtion printed by the Folger Shakespeare Library. They have lots of information in the book, and many definitions of the more difficult Elizabethian words.

I think it would be too slow and repetitive for anyone not in love with Jane Austen, her people and her time and place. I liked being in on her somewhat snide evaluations of people she meets and situations she encounters, and the letters do soften the 'authoress,' Jane Austen, for me and let me see more of the daughter and sister, Jane Austen. I loved the little details of daily life, writing to her sister and asking for two pair of stockings or some gloves from a particular shop or supplier, the contemplation of new dresses, the yardage to be purchased and then given to the dressmaker, the women of the family sitting in the parlor at their 'work,' making a dozen shirts (by hand with tiny stitches) for a brother soon to go to sea, the breakfasts, teas, dinners - with the food and drink seldom described. You'd think they didn't eat! But then, this is England, not France. Anyway, the book is a time travel vehicle. People die. Babies are born. Mothers die. Fathers remarry. There are constant flirtations and courtings. There is the endless finagling for the right mate, someone of equal status with money, and not too awful. Jane and her sister don't seem to take the deaths very hard. I suppose with someone always dying, and untimely death being so much harder to avoid,it was a matter of course.Jane's own death is only apparent to us by the cessation of the letters after a period of letters in which she alludes to, but never complains about, a growing disability and fatigue (and I suppose pain). She, who was always out on a fine morning walking somewhere, miles and miles across the countryside or hours and hours in town and city, tells her sister that she is no longer able to walk out and has to be helped to sit outdoors in the garden. I don't think she was yet 50 when she died. I also know that she had work in progress when she died. What have we missed.I loved this book, couldn't put it down. Just the right amount of explanation and information from the editor.

By HMS Warspite "Letters of Jane Austen" contains the famous English author's surviving personal correspondence, beginning around age twenty and extending nearly to her early death at age 41. The collection will probably have the most meaning to readers who are already familiar with her life and her novels, which provide the necessary context for fully appreciating her letters.A number of things about the content of the letters, many of which were addressed to her sister Cassandra, may stand out to the reader. Jane Austen was obviously a gifted writer and a keen student of human nature, and this is highlighted in some of the letters, which can be rather wickedly witty about family, friends and neighbors. If many of the letter topics are commonplace, they provide a sense that Jane Austen never achieved financial security in her lifetime, whether through marrriage or her writing, and remained unhappily dependent on her family. It becomes obvious in the course of the letters that her writing was the most important thing in her life, and that she was a dutiful member of her immediate family, but you can find her sometime wistfully wishing for more. Perhaps most of all, there is a sense of the real Jane Austen present in the letters, even if she tends to be guarded about her inner-most thoughts. This reviewer wishes Cassandra had not been quite so thorough in weeding Jane's letters at her death. "Letters of Jane Austen" is highly recommended to her dedicated fans.

The letters gave me a wonderful insight in her personality, which was fun, and caustic, and smart, and very feminine. They also made me understand her books much better.

She is a shell barely surviving, constantly facing those who accuse her of murdering her baby, even after so many years.Kelly Sheldon arrives home to find her Mum seriously ill. Roz has always shied away from doctors and authority but now she needs help, diagnosed with Diabetes, she's damaged her kidneys. The vegetarian diet they eat will help her recovery and Roz still insists on her herbal remedies, but Kelly goes behind her back to have tests to see if she can donate a kidney for a Mother's survival.Gillain walks on eggshells around her angry daughter never knowing the right way to deal with her and always feeling guilty about never finding the right time to tell her she is adopted. That is until the evil Joan blabs in yet another bought of hatred towards her family. A complex story of love and inheritance By Hilary Shepherd Three women, two daughters, and an emerging picture of a mix-up at birth as Thorne Moore weaves her powerful story between past and present. For Kelly and Vicky, the two daughters, nothing is what they’ve been brought up to believe, but the mothers are equally in the dark. When their stories converge in the present all five have something to lose, even the one who apparently finds what she’s spent more than twenty years looking for.This is a complex story of love and inheritance. It doesn’t resort to easy answers, and – as all good books do – it leaves the reader thinking about how the various lives will pan out beyond the confines of the plot. I missed the earthy connection with the Welsh countryside and the powerfully drawn characters of ‘Time for Silence,’ but I admired the unexpectedness of ‘Motherlove’. Thorne Moore is a brave and effective writer, very well worth reading, and I’m looking forward to see what comes next – it will surely be different again.

Her first is quite a handful, financially it will be even more tough and she isn't ready to have another baby. Lindy is seventeen, she's pregnant and she has a violent boyfriend. She's afraid to have the baby as her child won't be safe with him. He wants her to leave the baby somewhere, but Lindy wants to keep her child. Gillian is desperate to become a mother, but she can't get pregnant. When nothing works she decided she'd like to adopt. She and her husband are living with her mother and that isn't an ideal situation to raise a child, but she wants to have one anyway.Two girls find out their mother isn't their real mother. Kelly's mother Roz has a genetic form of diabetes. She needs a new kidney, but Kelly isn't a match. She wants to find the girl who is to see if she has a kidney for Roz. What happened 22 years earlier with the babies on the maternity ward in the hospital, has someone switched them? Vicky finds out that her mother isn't her real mother. Her childhood hasn't been very nice, so she's trying to find the woman who should have raised her. She thinks she knows where to find her, but is this person actually her mother? What happened with both of these girls?Motherlove is a fantastic fast paced book about three mothers and two girls. Somehow the stories are connected, but how? I couldn't stop reading and couldn't wait to find out what happened. This is such a thrilling read. The story is unusual and really good. Everything clicks at a certain point and behind the gripping part of the story there are also beautiful stories about young women who need to find their way in life. Something went horribly wrong somewhere and that had grave consequences. Eventually the reader will get the missing pieces of the puzzle, I loved how the writer makes that happen. If you like a moving psychological story that will keep you on the edge of your seat you will love this book.

By Darien Summers Peter Rabbit and his friends return in another one of Burgess' classic children's tales of the animals of the Green Meadows and Green Forest areas. One of those animals, Mr. Toad, takes center stage in this book as he teaches us such lessons like the wisdom of thinking before talking, and thru his own humiliating experience with Buster Bear, the downside of pride.Mr. Toad prides himself in being very smart, and he takes joy in teaching Peter Rabbit, and thru him, the book's young readers about the habits of toads. One such habit that Peter Rabbit is amazed to learn of is a toad's ability to grab flies straight out of the air with their tongue. These lessons are very descriptive and told in a fun way, amongst the humor of Peter's curiosity. I think children will find lessons such as these entertaining and a fun way to learn.Mr. Toad is also human (so to speak), and has to deal with the same hindrances that most of the other animals in the forest have to deal with, such as the threat of predators. A not so agreeable character, Mr. Blacksnake, makes his villainous presence known in the book as he tries twice to catch and eat Mr. Toad. Obviously nothing bad happens, but we are reminded that even though this is a children's tale, the animals in the story do have to worry about survival.I hope you give this book a try, its naturalistic messages and lessons are well constructed and perfect for young growing minds.Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book.

By Jennifer A Spead My 9 year old son says: "It's a good book for children who are just starting to read by themselves with no help. It has the characters from Old Mother West Wind like Peter Rabbit, Jimmy Skunk, Mr. Black Snake, Reddy Fox. The story was good. There were a bunch of different chapters which sort of were connected to each other. It was definitely worth reading. I learned some, too."

About the Author Anton Chekhov, in full Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (born Jan. 29 [Jan. 17, Old Style], 1860, Taganrog, Russia—died July 14/15 [July 1/2], 1904, Badenweiler, Ger.), major Russian playwright and master of the modern short story. He was a literary artist of laconic precision who probed below the surface of life, laying bare the secret motives of his characters. Chekhov’s best plays and short stories lack complex plots and neat solutions. Concentrating on apparent trivialities, they create a special kind of atmosphere, sometimes termed haunting or lyrical. Chekhov described the Russian life of his time using a deceptively simple technique devoid of obtrusive literary devices, and he is regarded as the outstanding representative of the late 19th-century Russian realist school.

When he describes the plight of a trapped bug, that description stays with you. And even more important, he describes relationships - the man and estranged wife, the ready-to-retire doctor and his long suffering wife...With Checkhov's background as a medical doctor, his observations and detailed analyses make a lot of sense. I enjoy his short stories (though some are pretty darned long!) Some of his descriptions will stay with you a very long time.
