It is the spring and the start of track season in Bobby's city, located in Washington State and Seahawks territory, and for him, a long-awaited break from judo and the beatings at the hands of Brad, the strongest and best junior brown belt in his dojo. Next to judo, track is Bobby's best sport, and he is one of the top quarter milers in his middle school; and now, he will have one last chance to show his skill in the annual track meet before moving on to high school. He will also now have a chance to impress Vicky, his secret crush and the prettiest cheerleader in the school, who, all year long, has had eyes only for Brad. Bobby also has a chance to get the lead in the spring dramatic production and to play opposite Vicky. But just when it looks like Bobby will get his opportunity to star in the play and, perhaps, in Vicky's heart, Brad shows up to try out for the play, demonstrating histrionic skill and the potential to win the lead. To make matters worse, Brad decides to run track—the quarter mile, no less. In his first practice session, Brad shows that he has the potential to outdo Bobby in the city track meet. Bobby has all the necessary physical skills in both judo and track to beat his rival, but he lacks the mental attributes to succeed, often allowing his temper to obstruct the flow of the ki and to block his harmony with natural laws of nature. Bobby's inability to understand the "gentle way" of judo is hindering his success both in his athletic life and social life. However, through the teaching of and the personal example set by Sensei Yanagi and the influence of the strange new kid next door, who wears a Raiders jacket and cap and practices ballet, Bobby learns self-control, finds that outward appearances are not always valid, and discovers how to apply martial arts principles to track and to life. 'The Year of the Gentle Willow" will demonstrate that one need not always search for success or victory, for, if one is in harmony with nature, those goals may find the seeker; and it will also demonstrate that, ultimately, victory does not always go to the strong but, more often as not, goes to the gentle. About the Author Paul Turse earned an Ed.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University, and majored in theatre arts. His doctoral dissertation, Shakespeare: Kabuki-style, compared the theatres of Shakespeare and Japan and provided staging tips for academic productions designed to theatrically enhance Shakespearean plays by use of Kabuki staging techniques. He began his judo training while serving his country as a member of the Armed Forces when stationed in Japan. A seventh degree black belt in judo and a sixth degree black belt in jujitsu, he has been practicing and teaching martial arts for more than 50 years. His most notable teaching experience was at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School, where he was also employed as an English instructor for 25 years. Although emphasizing character development rather than competition, he did enter the United States Senior National Judo Championship (Masters Division), placing third in the 1981 event.

My very first thought was “Wow, uplifting.” My second thought was “Just, WOW!”The Year of the Gentle Willow is a short story that many would classify in the Young Adult genre. I would find it unfair to deprive older adults of this treasure.Its plot is simple, in the pattern of an Aesop fable. It’s all of 40 pages, with an additional six pages of notes about Judo and Ju-jitsu validated by the author’s 7th Degree Black Belt in Judo and 6th Degree Black Belt in Ju-jitsu.Like the Karate Kid, it involves a wise teacher and a student suffering from many of the maladies of adolescence. That’s where the resemblance ends. The plot is much less predictable; the characters are incredibly well developed for a short story; and the ending is an epiphany.Turse’s writing style is iconoclastic. The last six pages create a framework for the short story after the fact; not a heretofore successful writing technique. Turse makes it work through an excellent manipulation of the visuals. I guess his Columbia PhD in theatre arts help. Those last six pages enhance the visuals retroactively to wrap the reader’s enjoyment in an aura of unparalleled emotion and understanding.In the interest of full disclosure, Paul Turse was my first Judo teacher many years ago. He was the original source of a philosophy which was to later shape my life. So I owe him a debt of gratitude, but not a departure from the truth. The truth is that this short story ought to be required reading for young and old in all centers of learning; be they for the martial arts or for traditional education.A must read!Bravo, Sensei! Five well deserved stars!

Great read for young at heart By Bergwerfsama Dr. Turse had written an excellent tale of perseverance and provides a great read for youngsters and even adults. His historical addendum is most interesting to martial artists and those who are interested in jujutsu history. Highly recommended?

Dead Souls, is a novel by Nikolai Gogol, first published in 1842, and widely regarded as an exemplar of 19th-century Russian literature. The purpose of the novel was to demonstrate the flaws and faults of the Russian mentality and character. Gogol masterfully portrayed those defects through Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov (the main character) and the people whom he encounters in his endeavours. These people are typical of the Russian middle-class of the time. Gogol himself saw it as an "epic poem in prose", and within the book as a "novel in verse". Despite supposedly completing the trilogy's second part, Gogol destroyed it shortly before his death. Although the novel ends in mid-sentence (like Sterne's Sentimental Journey) "To the door of an inn in the provincial town of N. there drew up a smart britchka—a light spring-carriage of the sort affected by bachelors, retired lieutenant-colonels, staff-captains, land-owners possessed of about a hundred souls, and, in short, all persons who rank as gentlemen of the intermediate category. In the britchka was seated such a gentleman—a man who, though not handsome, was not ill-favoured, not over-fat, and not over-thin. Also, though not over-elderly, he was not over-young. His arrival produced no stir in the town, and was ac-companied by no particular incident, beyond that a couple of peasants who happened to be standing at the door of a dramshop exchanged a few comments with reference to the equipage rather than to the individual who was seated in it. "Look at that carriage," one of them said to the other. "Think you it will be going as far as Moscow?" "I think it will," replied his companion. "But not as far as Kazan, eh?" "No, not as far as Kazan." With that the conversation ended. Presently, as the britchka was approaching the inn, it was met by a young man in a pair of very short, very tight breeches of white dimity, a quasi-fashionable frockcoat, and a dickey fastened with a pistol-shaped bronze tie-pin. The young man turned his head as he passed the britchka and eyed it attentively; after which he clapped his hand to his cap (which was in danger of being removed by the wind) and resumed his way.."

About the Author Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol , dramatist, novelist and short story writer of Ukrainian ethnicity. Russian and Ukrainian scholars debate whether or not Gogol was of their respective nationalities. Considered by his contemporaries one of the preeminent figures of the natural school of Russian literary realism, later critics have found in Gogol's work a fundamentally romantic sensibility, with strains of Surrealism and the grotesque ("The Nose", "Viy", "The Overcoat," "Nevsky Prospekt"). His early works, such as Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, were influenced by his Ukrainian upbringing, Ukrainian culture and folklore. His later writing satirised political corruption in the Russian Empire (The Government Inspector, Dead Souls), leading to his eventual exile. The novel Taras Bulba (1835) and the play Marriage (1842), along with the short stories "Diary of a Madman", "The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich", "The Portrait" and "The Carriage", round out the tally of his best-known works.

If you want to learn about the game today, I suggest either an "Idiot's Guide" or "For Dummies".The 1 star review is a bit ridiculous since the book:1. Was written to explain the game as it was 104 years ago2. Uses the correct spelling of the time3. Is authored by father and creator of American Football including the basic concept of a "down".Don't read this book if you want to understand the game today.Read this book because it is a brilliant piece of history; it not only shows how the game was watched in its time, but also allows readers today to understand and make connections to the similarities and changes seen in the game today.

27 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Unexpected Gem! By Phil Geusz I didn't expect much for a buck. Even more, twenty pages into this read, I hated Herr Schenk with a passion-- his diary revealed him to be the very image of a stereotypical arrogant Prussian nobleman, who constantly referred to even his own captain as an "inferior" because of his lack of a blue-blooded family lineage. And yet, this work ended up being one of the greatest reads I've experienced in years. It wasn't the grand military adventure I was led to expect-- far from it! Instead, the iron-spined Herr Schenk fell head-over-heels in love with someone he really rather should not have. And, in so-doing, he was compelled to face the moral failings of his society and his nation. For the first time, I ran into a German officer who finally "gets it".I've read dozens if not hundreds of German officers' memoirs over several decades. In fact, I've read so many of them that I'm sick to death of empty platitudes like "patriotism" and "national honor" and "the legitimate needs of the German people". Yet never, ever before have I come across the story of a man who came to such a profound understanding of the evil nature of the war machine and social order he served. You'll find no weasel-words here; in the end Schenk, the most unlikely of penitents, _understood_. Over a period of a handful of months, he went from arrogant pride at being singled out for a few words from the Kaiser to faking his attacks on Allied ships so that his crew might believe that they were actually fighting. He ended the war disgraced in the eyes of his peers, but at last a whole man in every other regard.Of all the German memoirs I've read, this one _quite_ unexpectedly turned out to be the most powerful and memorable. Halfway through, I'd have dismissed it (and Schenk) as eminently forgettable. I'd have been wrong, too!My only caveat regarding this book is that its story seems almost too good to be true. A quick spot of internet research doesn't find any historical mention of Herr Schenk, where his (minor) exploits as a U-Boat commander before his great change of heart should at least have earned him a byline. (He sank several ships, according to "Diary", including a Q-ship.) Yet, I find nothing, which makes we suspicious as to the work's authenticity. On the other hand, his "lingo" (all the way down to referring to the gyrocompass by its brand-name) is spot-on. It _feels_ authentic, in other words. Yet, I harbor suspicions.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Clumsy fiction - don't waste your time By Brent Despite all the insinuations, this is not an authentic diary. The author has clearly never served on a submarine. The historical coincidences are absurd--- the supposedly naval author just happens to visit Verdun by train, and captures the moment from a reflective, postwar perspective? I admit that I didn't finish the book, but neither will you. This isn't history, or even a very good stab at historical fiction, just some amateur history buff's vision of how it "could have happened." The only even vaguely intriguing aspect of the book is how someone managed to generate so much attention for such a thin product.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Intriguing Story By Tv I must say I'm surprised this book has not received reviews yet. That in itself caused me to read it. I enjoy historical novels, and although you can expect a more formal form of English and writing it usually enhances the story line.In this case, I'm giving this a 4 star rating and not 5. The English is so over-the-top formal and written in such an old fashioned style that I actually had to re-read some portions over again to get what the author was saying. Also, the over abundance of big and long lost words caused me to stop repeatedly to look up words. Thank God that Kindle has a built in dictionary that made this task easy. I think if I were reading this in paper format I would have given up.The story in itself is quite enjoyable and the characters are pretty well developed. The ending seemed a little abrupt, but not overly so. All in all I give this a thumbs up for a historical novel. It is not a romance novel, so if you are looking for romance look elsewhere. This story follows a young prince who is comfortably imprisioned by 3 archbishops who wish to use him as a pawn when his drunken father, the emperor, dies. The prince manipulates his freedom using a double to stand in for him in prison and makes a life for himself in the world as a swordmaker and fencing teacher. He pulls a band of men together to help right the wrongs of the starving people (due to the mismanagement of the greedy nobels and archbishops.) The story follows his quest with its trials and tribulations and successes. The rest I'll leave for you to read.

About the Author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in 1807 in Portland, Maine, and he became a professor of modern languages at Harvard. His most famous narrative poems include The Song of Hiawatha, Paul Reveres Ride, "The Village Blacksmith," "The Wreck of the Hesperus." From his friend Nathaniel Hawthorne, Longfellow got a brief outline of a story from which he composed one of his most favorite poems, 'Evangeline'. The original story had Evangeline wandering about New England in search of her bridegroom. One of the first poets to take the landscape and stories of North America as his subjects, Longfellow became immensely popular all over the world, and he was the first American commemorated in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey. He was given honorary degrees at the great universities of Oxford and Cambridge, invited to Windsor by Queen Victoria, and called by request upon the Prince of Wales. He was also chosen a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and of the Spanish Academy. He died on March 24, 1882.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A beautiful poem in an affordable edition By Bookseller80 I'm a big fan of Longfellow's works, and Evangeline is by far my favorite. I was pleased to see this version made available at such a low price. My only concern is that the text on the pages within are all italicized, which I find quite distracting. Otherwise, I'm quite pleased with it.

By Dee in NE I travelled to Nova Scotia last summer and saw the homeland of the Acadians, but had never actually read Evangeline. I bought it and read it right away when I got home. It's interesting and sad to know this was evidently based on a true story that was told to Longfellow. Sad to know how the Acadians were treated.

Worthy Edition of Longfellow's Masterpiece By Teri-Sue Thompson In what may be Longfellow’s greatest masterpiece, this epic poem draws us into the village life of 1755 Acadia, at the time of the imminent marriage of Evangeline and Gabriel, whose plans were tragically thwarted by the sudden exile and dispersal of some 12,000-18,000 Acadians, including our hero and heroine, to various distant destinations. Amidst the confusion of their hasty exit at the command of the hostile military presence, the star-crossed lovers become separated and are destined to spend years searching for each other. Although the incident of the Acadian Deportation did occur in history, thus providing the setting, the characters and the story are all the creations of the Poet. We soon lose sight of this, however, as Longfellow lulls us into his penned reality with his poetic genius … herein using unrhymed dactylic hexameter (DA da da, DA da da, DA da da, DA da da, DA da da, DA da da … as in, from the famous Prologue, “THIS is the FORest priMEval. The MURmuring PINES and the HEMlocks, …”I first fell in love with this poem decades ago when I studied it in my schooldays. I have reread it from time to time, always feeling very moved by it and in awe of the beauty of Longfellow’s writing. His phrases are often indescribably … ethereal … so beautiful that I often repeatedly read the phrases, wanting to hold onto them for a while before proceeding with the tale. His imagery is frequently breathtaking. Two brief examples, randomly selected, are:“… and there, in his feathered seraglio, Strutted the lordly turkey, and crowed the cock, with the selfsameVoice that in ages of old had startled the penitent Peter.”(The definition of seraglio: A sultan’s palace, especially in the former Turkish Empire. Knowing this definition makes the difference between really appreciating Longfellow’s craftsmanship in these lines, or bypassing an opportunity to grasp fully the effect of Longfellow’s words.)A few lines further on, we read:“ … Murmuring ever of love; while above in the variant breezes Numberless noisy weathercocks rattled and sang of mutation.”(Is that not exquisite language to tell us that a weather vane was spinning with the changing winds?)I just finished reading this edition on my Kindle. It is nicely formatted, with active Table of Contents. Superb editing - no errors that I have seen. There is a brief biography at the end, though the author is unnamed. The inclusion of this biography apparently justifies the “Annotated” descriptor used, as there are no notes or explanations. The cover art is the only image included.I purchased this Kindle version of “Evangeline” in addition to the Delphi Classics – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Complete Works because I wanted the speedier and easier access to this poem than is allowed by the massive compilation. It’s well worth spending $1.00 for one of my personal favorite pieces of literature.I hope you enjoy Evangeline as much as I do.
