The book takes twists and turns and deals with ethics and honesty . The theme is centered around horses but changes along with the actions of the characters as the book progresses. It is an interesting book with old west time frame with a web of characters involved in deceit, self absorption, and control. As the book progresses the characters change as they become more aware of the reality of situations and more honest with themselves and others

Seemed rather 'cultish' for a western. As always Max has good ideas and paints pictures with words of what he is showing. Good ending...but seemed rather abrupt. Left me wanting more.

Josep Lluis Merlos, Movistar F1

In the autumn of 1888 a Danish magazine published a few chapters of an autobiographical novel which instantly created the greatest stir in literary circles throughout Europe. At that time Ibsen, Björnson, Brandes, Strindberg, and other Scandinavian writers were at the height of their cosmopolitan fame, and it was only natural that the reading world should keep in close touch with the literary production of the North. But even the professional star-gazers, who maintained a vigilant watch on northern skies, had never come across the name of Knut Hamsun. He was unknown; whatever slight attention his earlier struggles for recognition may have attracted was long ago forgotten. And now he blazed forth overnight, with meteoric suddenness, with a strange, fantastic, intense brilliance which could only emanate from a star of the first magnitude.

By Irgens To many hamsun readers this one will seem to be quite a departure for Hamsun, as it is an urban tale centering around a bohemian clique, rather than the usual tale of the Norwegian peasantry. As I know only those that are already Hamsun fans will ever read this, let it suffice to say that this book is as good as any of his works (even Pan), so hurry up and get a copy...

It is the fault of whatever moron translated this book.Have you ever read a translated book, and some weird quirk of the translator stands out and practically ruins the experience? Well, it's happening to me with this book and it is so FUNNY I just wanted to warn people.Whoever translated from Hamsun's original repeatedly and unceasingly uses the word "smilingly". As in, "he added smilingly", "She asks me smilingly", "answered Coldevin smilingly".Now, I don't know if that even is a word, and the first time I read it I thought it was cute, but then it started occurring every few pages! I mean, the guy must just associate some common word in Norwegian with the very UNCOMMON "smilingly" in English! He doesn't stop to think that in English, running across the word smilingly on every friggin' page is WEIRD. It has gotten so that now I am just cringing as I read along, waiting for him to use it again.Anyway, just a warning! "Beware!", he said smilingly.Bob

Modern love in fin de siècle Norway By Karl Janssen Shallow Soil, a novel by Knut Hamsun, was originally published in 1893 under the Norwegian title of Ny Jord. Hamsun, a prolific writer with a long career, would later go on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. Though generally regarded as Norway’s pre-eminent modernist, Shallow Soil is a book that harkens back to a naturalistic style of storytelling that bears more resemblance to earlier writers like Emile Zola or Norway’s own Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson than to Hamsun’s more experimental works. The story takes place in Kristiania (present-day Oslo). Hamsun depicts cosmoplitan urban life in early modern Norway through the lives of a clique of young city-dwelling artists and professionals. Included among this group are a few prominent upstart writers and painters, as well as working men such as merchants, a lawyer, and a journalist. While the artistic members of the coterie strive for recognition and compete for public funding, their bills are often paid by their friends the businessmen, who seem happy to support their comrades as a way of contributing to their nation’s artistic development. These young gentlemen, along with their wives and mistresses, meet and socialize at cafes, restaurants, theatres, and offices, arguing over politics and debating the merits of the latest literary productions. When Ole Henriksen, who runs his father’s shipping and trading company, gets engaged to Aagot, a girl from the country, he brings her to the city where she is welcomed into the group. This beautiful young woman, with her small-town innocence and wide-eyed enthusiasm, is a rare commodity in the cynical city, and soon Ole is not the only gentleman who hopes to win her heart. There is a political element to the novel as well. These young people clamor for radical reform and constantly complain about the weakness and indecision of their country’s parliament. A mysterious stranger named Coldevin arrives from the country, however, and criticizes the whiney indolence of Norway’s youth. Instead of gushing over the latest poets and playwrights, he suggests Norway’s young people should invest their energies in science and industry. Instead of whining about their government, they should take pride in their nation and encourage its development. I don’t know much about Hamsun’s politics, except that later in life he supported the Nazis. Here in Shallow Soil, one gets a taste of his conservative, nationalistic views.Nevertheless, the novel is primarily a love story—actually two or three love stories—and a very good one. Surprisingly forward and frank in its depiction of what would have been called “loose morals” in the 19th century, this book still holds a great deal of appeal for audiences of the 21st. Despite the book’s antiquity, the scenes of human drama that Hamsun portrays here—falling in love, seduction, rejection, betrayal, breakup, heartache—are ones that readers will recognize from their own lives. Here they are eloquently rendered with sensitivity, authenticity, and pathos. To American audiences, Hamsun is perhaps best known for his novel Hunger, a work that’s a little too angst-ridden and self-consciously modernist for my tastes. Shallow Soil, coming out a few years later, feels more mature and less pretentiously artsy. This work should not be confused with Hamsun’s 1917 novel Growth of the Soil, which is a totally different book and a true masterpiece. As explained above, however, Shallow Soil is also exceptional, so if you find yourself reading either one of Hamsun’s “Soil” novels, you really can’t go wrong.

Nearly a century old, yet still a fun read By Joanna M The seven Plumstead siblings, ranging from 19-year-old Nealie to seven-year-old Ducky, have been under the care of various relatives ever since their mother died and their doctor father set off for Australia. Now, the siblings have undertaken the adventure of their lives as they set off from England in the hopes of reuniting the family.Problems abound at every turn, from financial to logistical, from illness to cattle stampedes. Anything and everything that can go wrong seems to, and it all seems to fall upon poor Nealie's shoulders as the eldest.Worst of all, there's the niggling underlying doubt that even when the siblings find Dr. Plumstead in Australia, he might be less than thrilled to see them. After all, they didn't get a confirmation from him before leaving England, and it's been seven years since any of them have seen him or even gotten a letter. What if the children have traveled around the world only to find themselves without a home?Despite having been written nearly a hundred years ago, this story endures the test of time. Modern readers will enjoy the colorful characters, the tight familial bond, and keep rooting for the Plumsteads to end happily.

If you ask most Filipinos, Boracay is always #1 as one of the best destinations in the Philippines to visit and experience. If you take the time to meet local visitors on the island, you may find out that it is their first time to visit there. In the past, many Filipinos could not afford such luxuries and it is still true today for many people who live in the country. In recent years, the Philippines economy has improved tremendously and locals continue to flock there by the droves especially during summer season. I fell in love with the place because locals can't stop talking about how much fun Boracay has to offer and I had an unforgettable experience when I was there.

For fans of Ashton Smith, of Machen, and of Lovecraft there's eldritch and otherworldly horror. But beyond that Blackwood's works are unique in their ability to evoke an almost spiritual sense of awe.

One can't be sure whether the weird stuff is really happening or if the trappers are losing their minds in the woods. Four mind-blowing tales by a master of horror.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read on a stormy night when everyone is gone. By Amy Michelle Mosier Okay, I didn't read the first nor the last story (a bit too long for my taste). I did read The Man Who Found Out and The Glamour of the Snow. Both deliver enough spooks to make it worthwhile. The Man Who Found Out is about a mysterious set of tablets and even though this was written like a hundred years ago, it still stands out for being unique in the way it sets the mood and in the unusual and funny way it ends. I was not expecting that ending. The Glamour of the Snow, although the story tells you what is happening, it still is unnerving to think that the main character is just going along with this stranger, not thinking about the possible consequences. Both stories leave a lot of room for your imagination; they are open-ended in their conclusions and while that may not suit everyone, I was impressed.

Dare I say it? Dare I say that I, a plain, prosaic lieutenant in the republican service have done the incredible things here set out for the love of a woman—for a chimera in female shape; for a pale, vapid ghost of woman-loveliness? At times I tell myself I dare not: that you will laugh, and cast me aside as a fabricator; and then again I pick up my pen and collect the scattered pages, for I MUST write it—the pallid splendour of that thing I loved, and won, and lost is ever before me, and will not be forgotten.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A Pioneer Work of Science Fantasy By A Customer Edwin Lester Arnold (1875-1939) was for most of this century more famous for his "Phra thePhoenician" than for "Gulliver Jones," published in London in 1905. The stir over "Gulliver Jones"began over thirty years ago when striking similarities between his work and that of Edgar Rice Burroughs' own Mars series of books (begun in 1911) were finally noticed. It is entirely possible that Burroughs had never heard of Arnold or his book. At any rate, Arnold's work stands as a strange, unsung bridge between the Jules Verne/H.G. Wells style of science fiction of his day and the heroic science fantasy to be found in pulp fiction, comic-strips, and movies later in the twentieth century. The book's central figure is Gulliver Jones, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. Happening upon a flying carpet in New York City, he is whisked away to Mars, which is inhabited by characters very reminiscient of Well's "The Time Machine." He falls in love with the vapid but lovely Princess Heru just in time to see her handed over to the king of the Hither people (who are Haggard-style Africans thinly disguised as Martians). The rest of the novel involves his haphazard rescue of her via a voyage up an icy river of death and beyond. "Lieutenant Gulliver Jones: His Vacation" is a silly, dated book which is must reading for students of science fiction in this century, and for anyone in search of a good yarn.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Before there was John Carter By wiredweird This little story, over a hundred years old now, tells a swashbuckling tale of adventure in a distant and improbable world. Swept away by a magic carpet (!), Lt. Gulliver Jones arrives on Mars. He first lands among pretty lotus-eaters, an indolent society that seems to live for its simple pleasures and complex wines, with a different drug for each kind of bliss the drinker might pursue. Soon, however, he's off on a quest, down the river of death, into sacred temples, and finally into the land of the savages that prey on the gentler folk of this land. Arnold's languge tends toward the archaic - it was written in 1905, after all - and his plots tend to hang on wild coincidence as much as on the unexplained. Still, if you want some silly, glamorous, and chaste adventure, this could be just what you want.If parts of Arnold's story sound familiar, well, they should. Edgar Rice Burroughs lifted parts of the story wholesale, according to Richard Lupoff's preface, for use in his Mars series. In turn, Arnold seems to have imitated the Eloi of H.G. Wells's The Time Machine. This story provides a remarkable link in the chain of ideas that leads from and to better-known works. You don't have to be a literary historian to enjoy this book, though. It stands on its own as a pleasant bit of fantasy fluff.-- wiredweird

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Pioneer Work of Cassic SciFi By Sean Pheonix This novel is the first book I purchased. In 1961 I bought this pulp story from a used book store for a dime. Its cover price was 40 cents. But - it was such a great read that it sold me on SciFi forever. After my introduction to Lieutenant Gulliver Jones (its orignial title) between these covers, I went on to read Heinlein, and then Clark, Asimov and all the other's who came long after Edwin Arnold. The book reads with the all the classic Victorian flavor of Wells and Verne, but it has a real story embedded inside and is far enough removed from the stilted culture of the turn of the 20th century, that it allows even a 21st century reader to suspend belief enough to enjoy the magic of Mars as seen through the eyes of a culture far removed from the Martian desert we now know and can see unfolding before our eyes each day. For the connoisseur of classic SciFi, this is a must to read and appreciate. The old Ace paperback now sits enshrined in a shadow box frame beside my desk.
