4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A classic on the philosophy of fishing and friendship By Star Coulbrooke Even if you don’t know anything about fly-fishing, this book hits the spot. It’s a sarcastic, loving, self-deprecating conversation between friends which taps the funnybone and also appeals to the philosophical mindset. The technical terms and trade secrets occur without explanation, but novices will figure it out as they go along, and it doesn’t matter if they don’t because the stories are such fun. These two guys are so full of how-to-live that you wish you could join their private jokes, and you do in the reading.What’s best about the writing is, well, everything. The excitement. The cliff-hangers. The recognition that fishing isn’t just about fishing. Russ and Chadd talk about fish in the same way they talk about each other. They’re “reckless, irrational” (p.27), “delirious and desperate” (50). They proffer a “downright holiness” of experience made into stories. And ironies. “When I lie, they think I’m lying. When I tell the truth, they know I’m lying” (103).You can tell a lot about the state of these fly-fishers’ minds by the way they pay tribute to rivers. To fish is to become a part of the river’s rhythm, its cache of secrets, its thrall. As Chadd writes, “Rivers exert an irresistible gravitational force on those who live nearby” (20). This is also true of the force on those who stand inside a river day after day, lifting live weighted silver from its swift depths.It’s this element that I think will draw hundreds of readers from sporting goods stores and literary circles alike—the understated commentary on the plight of nature as we humans leave our mark, even when we try not to. The book is nonjudgmental. It doesn’t tie anything up in pithy endings or posit any morals, but leaves the answers to life’s big questions in the hands of readers to keep or release according to their own desire.As Russ says, “Good grief. Great book for all fly fishers By Cutthroat Maniac I got this book because I fish a lot in Montana, Idaho, and Utah and I was looking for a new book on fly fishing. This one looked interesting to me. As I read the book I was pleased to find out that I have fished many of the exact rivers the authors Vanzanten and Beck have written about. Each story perfectly describes the experience of fly fishing in the western U.S., along with the experiences of friendship, life and humor, as they go along with fly-fishing. Many of the stories made me laugh out loud as the writing is very humorous but also because many similar things have happened to me. Like a lot of outdoor sports, fly fishing tends to become a part of your personal life and it is sometimes hard to separate the two. So many of the conversations and experiences in this book are almost exactly the same as ones I have had in my life, some as recently as this week, such as staying in getto hotels to save money and fish somewhere special, or having a really lousy day on the water. Vanzaten and Beck see the humor, and sometimes you just have to laugh. The book is not a how-to-book or a guide-book, it is much more than that. The book has "rules" for fishing, but these are more metaphorical or tounge-in-cheek, he stories are more like what you would want to read after you get back from a trip than something you'd read to learn how to fish. There are several stories that discuss that aspect of fishing with friends as opposed to going alone that all fly-fishers will immediately relate to. In many ways it is a book about fishing buddies and how they are a part of your life. I was also pleased to see that there was a section of color photos in the middle that are incredible. I visited the Wind Rivers as a kid and the photos in this book capture the stunning beauty of that area. It made me want to go again immediately! There are other amazing photos of fish and rivers that will make you feel like you are on the water again. I have a feeling I will re-read these stories and share them with my own fishing buddies and family. I give this book 5 stars plus.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. for anglers and greenies By cakehat I bought this book for my husband. I read the essays aloud to him (in the car on our way to the river) and I have been equally captivated by the beautiful narrative, heart, and humor of the essays.
