In it, George diaries his spiritual growth over the course of a year by writing a poem either to God, about God or about his spiritual anguish or joy. Simply amazing, touching - great to use as a daily devotional. I highly recommend MacDonald to any Christian looking for a more personal walk with God the Father.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Profound & rich! By Len Woods This is not a book you speed read. It's written in archaic, 19th century style; therefore many of the lines require re-reading and a good bit of pondering. But the effort is worth it--deep theology conveyed in beautiful phraseology.MacDonald's spiritual insight and love for Christ is both gift and challenge.

Wonderful Edition By Amazon Customer I don't know what the problem was awhile ago when people were reporting the incomplete book, but it is all there now and is formatted beautifully. The TOC works quite nicely so navigation is a breeze. Definitely get this if you are looking to read this book - you won't find a better copy.

Would you risk your life to save your mortal enemy? Perhaps the only soldier revered on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line, Richard Rowland Kirkland is arguably the most famous "common" soldier of the American Civil War. His act of compassion at the battle of Fredericksburg in December of 1862 is both controversial and shrouded in mystery. Although this act is well known, the rest of his story, along with that of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry is not. In addition to Fredericksburg, this Angel of Marye's Heights was present at some of most fierce fighting of the war and most iconic locations: Henry House Hill at First Bull Run, the Dunker Church at Antietam, the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield at Gettysburg and Snodgrass Hill at Chickamauga. For the first time, the true epic of Richard Kirkland is revealed. This is his tale of the struggle between darkness and light, of the fight to deny the overwhelming bloodshed from destroying that which makes us human.

Halfway up the shining surface of the gilt-framed pier glass was a mark—a tiny ink-line that had been carefully drawn across the outer edge of the wide bevel. As Gwendolyn stared at the line, the reflection of her small face in the mirror grew suddenly all white, as if some rude hand had reached out and brushed away the pink from cheeks and lips. Arms rigid at her sides, and open palms pressed hard against the flaring skirts of her riding-coat, she shrank back from the glass.

I 're-read it frequently until somewhere along the way it disappeared. I'm very happy to have it on my Kindle. This is not really a child's story for no child would understand all the obscure references such as Robin Hood's barn, a pig in a poke, paying the piper, etc. This is more of an allegory. It's a way for the author to comment on the way parent's can mistake taking care of their children with caring for their children. True, it's not the best written story & it's references are difficult to relate to now but the message is timeless. Children want your love and time not things. I enjoyed reading this again & am happy it's available to all.

I have spent years trying to find it again as an adult then went to Amazon and was thrilled to find it again. Thank you, still love it and is a good read.

When Egbert Dormer died he left his two daughters utterly penniless upon the world, and it must be said of Egbert Dormer that nothing else could have been expected of him. The two girls were both pretty, but Lucy, who was twenty-one, was supposed to be simple and comparatively unattractive, whereas Ayala was credited,—as her somewhat romantic name might show,—with poetic charm and a taste for romance. Ayala when her father died was nineteen.

Ayala's Angel, by Anthony Trollope

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

15 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Light Trollope By A Customer Ayala's Angel is much lighter and more lyric than many of Trollope's novels. Ayala is a dreamer, and Trollope wants us to respect her for that. The pace and the humor are typical Trollope. I enjoyed it very much, though it's hardly his most profound commentary.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A delightful Trollope experience! By Tracy Marks To contradict what one reviewer said, this volume ISBN 0192817477, 694 pages NOT not the only third of three volumes; it's the entire novel of Ayala's Angel, which is one of my favorites - and I've read nearly three dozen Trollope novels. In this one his heroine is younger than most of his heroines, and lost in the romantic ideal, to the detriment of learning to love who is in front of her. But as he so often does, Trollope excels in taking us into his heroine's mind, viewing life from her perspective, while creating other fully believable characters as well. This novel is a delight!

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a merry tale of love and property By Athenaesq As always, Trollope's view of romance is firmly rooted in common sense. Two young people may love each other, but what are they to live on? Especially enjoyable here is the character of Sir Thomas Tringle--millionaire investor, kind-hearted uncle, and frustrated father convinced he has the most foolish children in the world.

The guide includes the Pacific beaches and the Strait of Juan de Fuca with great detail and directions. If you are planning a vacation here, live here (as I do), or wish you did, this is an incredible reference tool and just a fun read. Obviously, a labor of love, Greg Johnston gives you the true flavor and feel of the places he has visited. Wonderful journey in person or from your armchair!

By jennifer j A fabulously detailed guide and beautifully photographed. Locations are described just as if you were there. I loved all the historical references and enjoyed Greg's humorous style. The whole book makes me wish I was anywhere on the Washington coast right now. A must for anyone planning a visit for the first time or the hundredth time.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Colorful, opinionated writing and tons of practical advice By Rebecca Agiewich This is a fantastic guidebook. Having admired Greg Johnston's outdoor writing in the Seattle PI, I shouldn't be surprised. But this isn't your usual guidebook. The writing is colorful, opinionated, and fun to read. The photographs are beautiful (and there are a lot of them). The book itself is beautifully designed so that it even feels nice in your hands.(Kudos, Mountaineers Books!) Best of all it's just a great, detailed, and interesting guide to Washington's Pacific coast. I thought I knew the coast at least a little. But this book makes me realize that I've barely scratched the surface of this amazing place. Being a hiker and a kayaker, I especially like how he describes hikes and paddles in-depth, as well as giving his no-holds-barred opinions on the campgrounds you'll find along the coast. Though I don't fish, people who do will also find a lot to love in this book. Ditto with those who are curious about the natural and cultural history of the area. I'm in the midst of planning a trip to the Olympic Peninsula right now, and this book is an invaluable resource. I'm sure my copy will be dog-eared shortly from use!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Powerful New Voice in the Crime Fiction Genre By M.N. Prather Love, Incest, and the MafiaMaurice KamhiLife in the Mafia is hard, but still it holds a grim sort of fascination for us that never really goes away. In Love, Incest, and the Mafia, Maurice Kamhi capitalizes on that fascination to present readers with a realistic, if at times grisly, thriller. Kamhi's characters seem to have walked straight off the set of The Godfather. The author show a masterful handling of the dialogue of his many characters. The dialect and subtle word choices that he makes are correct for each character's background. This meticulous work on the part of Kamhi insures that readers will be able to recognize the characters and feel an authenticity that would be otherwise lacking. While the characters do belong to the world of the Mafia, Kamhi makes sure to not rely too heavily on the stereotypes of the Mafia world.Readers should not expect Kamhi's work to sugarcoat the often grotesque details in the underworld of crime. Kamhi certainly does not. There are scenes that are downright chilling and gruesome in Love, Incest, and the Mafia. Although the book does contain such scenes, readers will find that the author does not include them for mere shock value. Each of these scenes adds something to the portrait that Kamhi paints. Often in similar works, readers will find books that are replete with gratuitous violence that serves no purpose other than to shock the reader. Kamhi shows such scenes only when they are needed to forward the story and place readers into the world of Mafia crime. Kamhi shows his talent for handling the genre by keeping the action fast-paced and moving the reader quickly from scene to scene, so not too much time will be spent mulling over the gruesome details. In Love, Incest, and the Mafia, Kamhi shows himself to be adept at handling a work of crime fiction in such a way that will leave readers eagerly awaiting his next book.

You will get plenty of action and understand his tenacity and drive to fix problems that will peeve anyone...this is a fast paced read with a good ending. There are plenty of thought provoking scenes. I look forward to more books or maybe a sequal...his mom disappears and he is still not yet a man..hope to see more books by this author

Excerpt from Athletics and FootballA few lines only are necessary to explain the object with which these volumes are put forth. There is no modern encyclopædia to which the inexperienced man, who seeks guidance in the practice of the various British sports and pastimes, can turn for information. Some books there are on hunting, some on racing, some on lawn tennis, some on fishing, and so on; but one library, or succession of volumes, which treats of the sports and pastimes indulged in by Englishmen – and women – is wanting. The Badminton Library is offered to supply the want. Of the imperfections which must be found in the execution of such a design we are conscious. Experts often differ. But this we may say, that those who are seeking for knowledge on any of the subjects dealt with will find the results of many years' experience written by men who are in every case adepts at the sport or pastime of which they write.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The birth of modern athletics. By Roger Pedrick I once had the original, but lent it to someone I've long forgotten. This sets out the origins of modern athletics and the start of the gentleman amateur, an ethos that lasted well into the 1950's. I recommend this book to all of today's athletes.
