Anthony “T-Rock” Rockson is trapped amid gang violence on the streets of Los Angeles. With only one option to escape, he joins the army with fellow gang members, Michael and Daemon. Heather Wilson and her African American friend, Jennie, join the Rotc with plans to become officers after college. As Julius Jackson awaits his punishment before a judge, he agrees to a unique option: four years in the army. Rob Lancaster, who is not interested in leveraging his family's name anymore, joins the military where he hopes to be judged only on his strengths and weaknesses.
Eight years later, T-Rock, Michael, Daemon, Heather, Jennie, Julius, and Rob have all created new lives for themselves. Unfortunately, the struggle between blacks and whites in the military is evident. Determined to instigate change, a group of African American soldiers creates an underground organization focused on securing military assets located in six southeastern states. As the leaders of the Black Heritage Army plan a battle against the remaining United States, a civil war begins, potentially changing the course of American history forever and embroiling T-Rock and the others in an unforgettable struggle for justice. The Next Civil War reveals the challenges of several soldiers as they attempt to overcome strained race relations in the military via an underground organization with a mission to instigate war. And nearly 70 years into their integration by President Truman, African Americans make up the majority of the Army and a significant number of our other Armed Forces. This makes the premise of "The Next Civil War" startlingly real - that any group in the majority could use their numbers as a weapon against the rest of the country. Randy Arellano's novel moves at a brisk pace to introduce young people to whom joining the Army is the viable option. You cringe as bullets rip through an inner-city house turned gang refuge. The characters move up through the ranks and advance, and are drawn into a secret organization. All of the characters are believable and well drawn. Most of the action takes place on one US military installation, which helps keep the novel tight and prevents it from stretching into Clancy-like sprawl. Although the leaders are - by definition of their actions - traitors, Randy puts you in an over-their-shoulder view that drives the reader to identify with them and care about what happens next. This is a wonderful thriller that combines military drama, political suspense, and utter plausibility. A great fast read!

It looks at racism on both sides in a fair and realistic way. It pulls you in from the beginning through the stories of a group of very believable and well developed characters. There are a couple of good antagonists, along with those characters who draw you in and make you a part of their stories. Lots of great action and the end will leave you wanting more! Looking forward to the sequel (hopefully)...can't wait to see what happens next!!
