The 2015 NHL Entry Draft, taking place in late June, is the most anticipated draft in decades. Featuring a generational talent in Connor McDavid - compared, in this regard, to names like Crosby, Lindros, Lemieux and Gretzky - the draft also features potential franchise players such as collegiate standout Jack Eichel and McDavid's teammate, Dylan Strome. As many as fifteen players in this draft class are considered can't-miss prospects. Each year, The Hockey Writers draft team covers the draft from every angle, producing exhaustive profiles of the most intriguing prospects. With so much riding on this year's draft, the team has compiled over 150 profiles of the prospects they believe will be drafted in late June. While some of these profiles have already been published on The Hockey Writers in different form, the majority have not and are exclusive to this draft guide. Making the most of their own viewings of these prospects coupled with the experience and acumen of several of the game's most respected amateur scouts, The Hockey Writers present the 2015 NHL Draft Prospect Guide, an extremely affordable and very convenient way for hockey fans to quickly learn more about the players drafted by their favorite team in late June.

From the Author Mental fitness enables you to perform at your peak not only in tennis, but in all sports. This book teaches you step-by-step how to apply Peak Performance Optimization (PPO) so that negative thinking, nervousness, anger, and doubt do not limit how well you play.  You will learn how to eliminate negative psychological forces that you never knew existed. You can see this demonstrated at PerformAtPeak.com. Great amounts of improvement occur exceedingly fast, especially when PPO is combined with tennis lessons. Instructors become more effective.

From the Inside Flap Players can only perform at their best if they are not excessively tense, angry, or discouraged on the court. Minimizing distracting thoughts and not letting bad shots bring down your level of performance is critical. Whereas past books about the mental aspects of tennis have emphasized coping with negative feelings. Peak Performance Optimization (PPO) quickly reduces these problems so that coping methods are needed less and are more effective for any sport. PPO can be applied days before or immediately before or after a match and be done anywhere. PPO enables tennis instructors to become more effective so their clients can benefit more from lessons. This method incorporates acupressure stimulation with conventional coaching methods. Since this is not acupuncture no needles are used. By tapping on very specific acupressure points the most important regions of your brain are simultaneously activated to optimize performance. Novak Djokovic has used some of the methods taught in this book. This can benefit you. Finally, you will be at your maximum psychological functioning on a tennis court. Players of any age can benefit whether playing singles or doubles.   Tennis is the most unique sport in professional athletics. Tennis in the Zone By Rick Leskowitz, MD Dr. Pasahow has written an entertaining and informative book that describes in great detail a series of simple exercise to help tennis players enter the fabled “Zone” of peak performance. His expertise as a psychologist and his experience as an avid tennis player shine through, as he combines cognitive techniques with new brain research and holistic therapies like acupressure to create his process of Peak Performance Optimization. My only critique of this book is that it appeared 45 years too late to help me make my college tennis team!Rick Leskowitz MDFounding MemberThe Sports, Energy, and Consciousness Group

Edwards I wish I had had this book when I was playing tennis competitively! Dr. Pasahow has adapted Thought Field Therapy, developed by Dr. Roger Callahan, to the field of tennis. He leads the reader through tapping sequences to bring about peak performance using the Peak Performance Optimization (PPO) method. If you have tennis skills and would like to enhance your performance, then this book is for you! He also includes strategies for adapting the PPO method to other sports. In addition to being extremely helpful, this book is written in an engaging manner! Most of all, it works!

If you are looking to reduce the "interference" in your game of tennis, this book is a must. If you do not know proper strokes and footwork and strategy by all means get that kind of coaching. But if you know that stuff at least intellectually, but cannot consistently apply it then you have "interference". For a few dollars you get access to a very effective mind body approach that helps reduce the interference and tunes the mind and body to higher levels of performance. I definitely would recommend the kindle version as there are direct links to free videos that will help you actually use the energy psychology procedures Dr Pasahow teaches.

He has studied yoga, sacred sexuality, Noetic Aura Balancing, energy medicine and Sarat Sabd Yoga. Winston’s poetry comes as inspiration. It flows as life experience, it comes as his attempt to express his experience of life. "Win" was born in Phoenix and is a world traveler. Winston was driven to spiritual self-discovery from a young age. Living in New Orleans at the time, at the age of 13 he asked his parents, friends and the minister at church “Who am I? Who are we? What are we doing here?” At 14 he had his first inner awakening and he began writing mystical love poetry. Over the next couple years he experienced becoming aware of himself as an eternal being, of past lives, of being a spiritual traveler. He began his study of the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita, the Tao and other sacred literature. He left home at age 16, dropped out of school, got involved in drugs. He went to college, first in Tokyo Japan. He has completed his B.A., M.A. and M.S.S. at a number of schools, LSU, UNM, Southwestern College, Westfield State U. and Peace Theological Seminary. He built custom homes as a contractor, owning multiple companies. He was a licensed counselor, a parenting educator and a wellness center manager. Throughout the years spiritual studies and consciousness study continued to drive him. He continues his education in the area of self-growth, metaphysics, psychology, yoga, sexuality, consciousness training, communication, relationship, meditation and spirituality. He practices of Shabd Yoga—Soul Transcendence—the practice of listening and following the audible life stream. This ancient practice is a verbal tradition and is one that a number of Sufis and other spiritual adherents have practiced through the ages. He takes time each day to sit and go inside doing spiritual exercises. He is a Noetic Balancing Healer and spiritual coach. At this time he lives in a little cabin in the Colorado Rocky Mountains near his parents. He spends time outdoors, hiking, climbing and biking. He also devotes time to writing and study.

By EWill I love this book of poetry and bought three more to give as gifts...there is elegance and simplicity in the poems that speak of love, God and the unfolding of these in life's journey... a true mystic poet in that beneath the sensual words there was complexity that captured my attention, and left me exploring the deeper meanings of love, life and God. It has been awhile since I have found such a gem in poetry books.

PDF Ebook Download Online: Zen and the Art of Disc Golf, by Patrick McCormick

Disc golf is more than a game, Patrick D. McCormick carefully argues; it can be a window that shows us how we interact with the world. The way we play is the way we live.

This book is about the sport of disc golf, but it also is about so much more than throwing a disc at a basket. For the passionate practitioner, disc golf becomes a meditation, and practicing has the potential to make us not only better players but better people. We begin to focus on what we are doing on the course that is working or not working versus what we are doing at home or in the office.

Zen and the Art of Disc Golf is about becoming the best players we can be and in turn becoming the best possible version of ourselves through cultivation of attitude, focus, determination, and mental strength. It is about mastering the mind, body, and spirit in such a way that we score better and live better.

Inside this book you will learn:
  • What disc golf can teach us about life and success.
  • The secret formula for success on and off the course.
  • How to create the proper attitude.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. then go play the best round you've had in weeks By Nikolas Huist Disc golf is so much more mental than physical. Your attitude toward the game can affect every shot on the course. Zen and the Art of Disc Golf is there for your mental game. This isn't a rule book, it's a mental break. Sit down, read some, get your mind straight, then go play the best round you've had in weeks. Do yourself a favor and order this book, then help #growthesport and buy a copy for your buddy.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Definite Must Read By Alex Sperley This book is a definite must read for all disc golfers of all skill and interest levels. Zen and the Art of Disc Golf is NOT an in depth how-to for improving your focus or a tutorial on how to perform under pressure. Zen and the Art of Disc Golf is a basic foundation for internal dialogue - a place to begin a conversation with yourself about who you are on and off the course. This book's primary goal is to encourage you to look internally, instead of externally, when shots go poorly or even when your game is going well - which is a very strong attribute to have when looking to maintain a good, healthy attitude.I've recommended this book to all the guys I regularly play with and they all feel the same way. However, things really started to click when I listened to the audiobook in the car with my non-disc-golfing wife. I told her that I wanted to share the book with her and fill her in on some of the things I've been internalizing and thinking about because of the book. We listened to Zen and the Art of Disc Golf from beginning to end in one go and even my wife loved it. She even asked to listen to it again on the way home because she wanted to make sure she didn't miss anything. After the second listen through with her, she began a dialogue with me that not only highlighted all the things I was taking away from the book but she also shared HER views on who I am as a disc golfer, as a father, and as a husband and how all of those things are intertwined. Sharing the ideas and concepts from Zen and the Art of Disc Golf not only reinforced what I want to work on to become the man and disc golfer I eventually want to be but also indirectly created a support structure in my wife who can help continue the conversation and encourage growth.Ultimately, it's not the book that has the potential to help people but the concepts and ideas. Patrick McCormick has done a wonderful job making them relatable and easy to digest without being pretentious or heady. Absolutely worth the read, but the book is only the first step. Happy throwing.

Presents a complete thought system for approaching, the course each shot, the round and by extension, life itself. It's short and powerful like a nailed 20 foot putt! It's great that our sport is big enough now for a book like this. I am buying copies for my buddies.

25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. A CLASSIC By A Customer I find it so sad that so few people have read or reviewed this masterpiece. I'm sorry to say it, but if it was on Christianity or the life of Christ the response would have been very different and this kind of writing would have been equated with the likes of "Paradise Lost." I am not a Buddhist, but I was deeply moved by the power and beauty of "Light of Asia." It follows the life of the Buddha, who was born in Dambadiva, India about 2500 years ago, to the royal family, but left the comforts of his life and all worldly possessions to persue the meaning of life; and gives us a vibrant picture of this great teacher and his teachings, rendered in beautiful verse. An excellent way to find out more about Buddhism.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Educational and inspiring By A Customer This is indeed a beautiful poem. I recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about the origins of Buddhism. The Light of Asia is Guaranteed to give the reader light. The actual reading is like a wonderful journey, unvieling a mystery but not explaining it. It left me with a very peaceful sense. Note: I came by this book when a girlfriend's grandmother passed away. It is the original hardbound edition containing dated notations by her grandmother in 1897. They were going to throw it away and not a person in the family wanted it. I will cherish this book forever.

The countdown begins here, and it shall start with moves that focus on shredding your core.

Before starting your workout routine, however, make sure you do a three- or five-minute warm-up. These are simple movements that can slowly bring your heart rate up and warm up your muscles, like walking, stretching, and jumping jacks. If you jump straight ahead to working out, you are exposing yourself to injuries, such as muscle cramps, and it'll be unhealthy for your heart rate to swing straight up. So make sure to dedicate time for warm ups.

Horatio Alger can be a little preachy about boys having good work habits and avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and gambling, but this book is still quite entertaining. Squeaky clean, and with a good moral. Like all his books, virtues are rewarded, and greedy villains get what are coming to them.

It was a spring afternoon in the sixth year of the reign of King Henry VII. of England. There had been a great show in London, for that day his Grace opened the newly convened Parliament, and announced to his faithful people—who received the news with much cheering, since war is ever popular at first—his intention of invading France, and of leading the English armies in person. In Parliament itself, it is true, the general enthusiasm was somewhat dashed when allusion was made to the finding of the needful funds; but the crowds without, formed for the most part of persons who would not be called upon to pay the money, did not suffer that side of the question to trouble them. So when their gracious liege appeared, surrounded by his glittering escort of nobles and men-at-arms, they threw their caps into the air, and shouted themselves hoarse.

For some years past a lack of competent men in the profession of Piano Tuning has been generally acknowledged. This may be accounted for as follows: The immense popularity of the piano and the assiduous efforts of factories and salesmen have led to the result that nearly every well-to-do household is furnished with an instrument. To supply this demand the annual production and sale for the year 1906 is estimated at three hundred thousand pianos in the United States.

From the Back Cover

If you have a note that has dropped in pitch, do you have to call in the tuner? A stuck key? Sympathetic rattle? Missing bridles? A broken hammer shank? An unglued ivory? The answer, in each case, is no: you can make all of these repairs yourself! This is the clearest and most complete book available for beginning tuners and amateur pianists. It explains all the basic processes practically and with model clarity. A non-musician can use this book without too much difficulty. You will learn how upright, grand, and square actions work, and how to take care of the smallest repairs — repairing stuck keys, poorly adjusted bottoms and capstans, crowded back checks, felts and leather on the hammers, hammer stems; softening damper and hammer felts; installing new bridles; eliminating "sympathetic rattle"; all with a minimum of tools and training. You will learn a professional method of tuning based on slightly flattened fifths, where only the octave and the upward fifth intervals are used. This is one of the easiest systems to learn, one capable of a great deal of control, and one perfectly suited to adjusting one or two keys. It is a tested method especially right for amateurs working without a teacher, and a method that trains the ear for other recommended systems. The author also explains "beats," the theory of the tempered scale, and useful experiments you can make with harmonic phenomena. If you want to experiment with tuning a piano, there is no better book to start with. It will help performers and teachers make occasional repairs and learn the structure and scale of the piano. Those who want to know how pianos work will find this book both clear and useful.

A few good ideas, but outdated and misleading By Ken Walker This probably was a good book in 1907, but too much has changed for it to be valuable now. The author's repeated references to square pianos, "international" vs. "concert" tuning frequencies, and tuning to C-517.3 are comically antiquated.I appreciate a mathematical approach to tuning, but the discussions in chapters 8-14 are a clumsy attempt to explain concepts that someone with a decent mathematics and music background can easily calculate -- that the ratio between adjacent notes is the 12th root of 2; and that chord, interval, and beat relationships can be derived from that ratio. A modern calculator makes much of this book completely pointless. The author's math sequences are cumbersome, and his conclusions are sometimes wrong. His beat frequency calculations are not always correct. The beat frequency of his C-128 to G-191.78 combination should be .44 Hz., not .66 as he calculates. A simpler and more correct way to calculate the beat frequency of a 5th interval is to subtract the 2nd harmonic (2 X 191.78) of the higher string from the 3rd harmonic of the lower (3 X 128).The discussion on where/how to place mutes is helpful, as are the points about taking proper steps to ensure the validity of piano hardware before tuning. Also, the method of setting temperament by 5th and octave steps is useful. In summary, if you have enough math and music experience to see through the dated material, the cumbersome derivations, and the false conclusions, this book gives a few helpful tips. I would not recommend it to most tuning amateurs, however.

The book is old, but so are vibrations. I found the math to be un-necessary unless I chose to follow the author's logic or "play" with the figures. I recently re-read the book because I had forgotten the ideas behind "just" and "compromise" temperament. I found what I wanted, then continued to re-read the whole book again--though I skimmed over parts I remembered. If you want to become a piano tuner, you should either apprentice with one, or take a mail-order course offered in a detective magazine. If you want to know how it's done--and might like to try tuning your old upright for the sheer joy of it--this is your book--but don't touch grandma's Steinway, okay?Dover publishes a lot of old books, many of which have reverted to "public domain" and don't require royalty payments. That's no sin, and it's clearly reflected in their prices. As Will Shakespeare might say, "There are still a few old books worth reading." Thanks, Dover.

Learn how to tune a piano By Claus Hetting This book is ancient, I think from the early 20th century, but still holds true and is an excellent and straight forward resource. As a pianist, it has been a revelation to understand how it is done, and even more fun to actually achieve a reasonable tuning myself (with a little help from my professional piano tuning friend.. OK, so I cheated a little...!). Highly recommended. To make life a little easier, I recommend getting a quality electronic (chromatic) tuner to tune the middle octave, after that use the octaves and 5ths to do the rest.Full marks to Dover - again. They provide a great collection of classics on music, especially piano related stuff. I think I have perhaps 5-6 books by this publisher.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY CHICAGO TRIBUNE • A thrilling adventure of danger and deep-sea diving, historic mystery and suspense, by the author of Shadow Divers Finding and identifying a pirate ship is the hardest thing to do under the sea. But two men—John Chatterton and John Mattera—are willing to risk everything to find the Golden Fleece, the ship of the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister. At large during the Golden Age of Piracy in the seventeenth century, Bannister should have been immortalized in the lore of the sea—his exploits more notorious than Blackbeard’s, more daring than Kidd’s. But his story, and his ship, have been lost to time. If Chatterton and Mattera succeed, they will make history—it will be just the second time ever that a pirate ship has been discovered and positively identified. Soon, however, they realize that cutting-edge technology and a willingness to lose everything aren’t enough to track down Bannister’s ship. They must travel the globe in search of historic documents and accounts of the great pirate’s exploits, face down dangerous rivals, battle the tides of nations and governments and experts. But it’s only when they learn to think and act like pirates—like Bannister—that they become able to go where no pirate hunters have gone before. Fast-paced and filled with suspense, fascinating characters, history, and adventure, Pirate Hunters is an unputdownable story that goes deep to discover truths and souls long believed lost.Praise for Pirate Hunters“You won’t want to put [it] down.”—Los Angeles Times “An exceptional adventure . . . 28 of 29 people found the following review helpful. Little-Known Tale of an Unusual Pirate and the Hunt for His Ship By Ken C. PIRATE HUNTERS is more than just "the search for the lost treasure ship of a great buccaneer," it's history, biography, and psychology rolled into one page-turning tale. Ostensibly, this is the story of two treasure hunters, John Mattera and John Chatterton, who descend upon the Dominican Republic in search of the pirate Joseph Bannister's ship, THE GOLDEN FLEECE. In a battle against two British war ships, the GOLDEN FLEECE went down in 1687, where it has rested in peace ever since. Author Robert Kurson uses the natural story lines built by hunters racing other hunters for one of the most elusive of prizes, a genuine pirate wreck (records for pirate ships were not kept by pirates and their sympathizers, making finds all the more challenging). In addition to the history propelled by the mystery, the false starts necessary to reach an actual strike, and the underwater (and above) descriptions built for suspense, the author stops the narrative to explore the background of both treasure hunters -- Chatterton's as a medic who risked his life repeatedly in Vietnam, and Mattera's as a boy growing up as part of the New York crime families network in the 60s and 70s. Both are diverting tales, though the reader, appetite whetted, longs to get back to the Dominican and the hunt for a great pirate ship. Also leavening the narratives are historical accounts of Joseph Bannister, the British captain turned rogue (and how often does THAT happen?) who took on his countrymen and fought them to a draw against incredible odds. For readers, the derring will do nicely and the reading is pitched once it comes to Bannister. Kurson also takes time to educate readers on pirates, on their love for democracy far in advance of any Founding Fathers, on their strict system of "justice" despite an undeniable love for money, liquor, and women. For instance, neither "Aarghhh!" nor "Shiver me timbers!" were ever uttered by pirates of the Golden Age of Piracy (1650-1720). Instead, they were the invention of 1950s movie screenwriters. Among invocations the real pirates said: "Eat what falls from my tail!" "Damn your blood!" "I'll cleave your skull asunder!" "I'll cut you in pound pieces!" and "I come from hell and I'll carry you there presently!"There's also an interesting ledger of what pirates were compensated for body parts lost while in brave battle: e.g. 600 pieces of silver or six slaves for a lost right arm, 500 pieces of silver or five slaves for a lost left arm, 100 pieces of silver or one slave for a lost eye or lost finger, etc. There were also set punishments onboard for stealing from a ship's plunder, cheating fellow pirates, sneaking a woman on board (trouble!), cowardice, insolence, disobedience, or anything else impeding the ship's primary purpose -- to steal (and spend as quickly as possible, for as Kurson points out, buried treasure is another myth and would be considered laughable to "spend it today, if not yesterday" pirates of the time). So go ahead, indulge the kid (or Capt. Kidd) in yourself. Read a rip-roaring tale about a real pirate who's little known and deserves to be better known. Yes, on small occasion the narrative waters grow choppy and slow, but for the most part the sailing is so smooth that Roger and most everyone else will grow Jolly reading it.

I find it to be very easy to read, with well researched facts and a simply outstanding writing style. The book deals with the search for the pirate ship of Joseph Bannister. I had never heard of him, but it turns out he was actually an interesting character, for reasons that are explained in the story. The author did extensive interviews with all the main people in the book, as well as additional in-depth research on pirates and the time period of the "golden age" of pirates (1650 - 1725 or so). But the book is not written as a dry history, or even a simple modern story. Instead, it is written almost like a novel - in fact, when I ordered the book, I could not tell from the product page if this was historical fiction or fact. I discovered that the story is not fictionalized at all; everything actually happened, and the dialog and action are as close as the author could come to what occurred. I especially like the way the writer provides background information on each person, when that person comes into the story. This is not unusual, but what makes the technique special in this case is that the writing manages to put in those vital details without diverting the reader from the story (or boring the reader half to death - I've read some books like that).I don't want to give away the story, or ending, but suffice it to say that the main characters are legends in the scuba diving world, and the target of their search is worthy of their expertise. I found myself turning page after page, eager to see what happened next in the story. I didn't know what was going to happen until almost the final chapter. This is gripping stuff, and I felt the excitement of both the author and the people in the tale as it unfolded.Summary: If you are interested in diving, pirates, or just a really good story, this work will not disappoint. By gracies mom This arrived this morning and I could not put it down.It was as easy as a great cup of coffee and on a subject matter near and dear to my heart.Kurson lets the story tell itself and the Chatterton and Mattera are fascinating and totally interesting men with a rare sense of ethics and adventure combined. There is so much more than just a pirate ship hunt here but then I really want you to read the book so you will feel as elated and satisfied as I did upon completing it.There is danger and government and the goliath'' that prowls all the seas of our lives but there is also the rare experience of men growing as human beings in the emotional and social sense...hell spiritual too.Intertwined with adventure is the shrinking of any wild or respectably dangerous places with which to test ourselves and yet as Chatterton finds through his relationship with the people of a small village maybe the man makes the challenge and not the other way around. In short Chatterton and Mattera learn to think like a Pirate to find a Pirates' riches and maybe even the deepest parts of their own souls. Now that is the kind of journey we all need to bear witness to.Written with a deft and sure hand and an occasional glimpse of the poet, Kurson kept me turning the pages ntil there were none left.

Through the lens of combat sports, Sam Sheridan goes around the world in search of answers to various questions about how top personalities think about fighting. The book is laid out in the form of short sections about each of the people that Sam talks to. People like Dan Gable, Freddie Roach, Greg Jackson, Renzo Gracie, and Randy Couture answer Sheridan's excellent questions with thoughtful and insightful responses that are presented in such a way that you get a very good look at how they think about the fight game and what in their lives have made them reach that point.Sam also covers areas outside of fighting, but areas that are thematically related. He talks to David Horton about endurance running, and he talks to Josh Waitzkin about moving from chess to tai chi to jiu-jitsu. In each section, Sheridan lets the subject be as concise or explanatory as they need to be on the page. He interjects his own experience into the responses, always at the correct time and always with an astute bit to enhance what the passage is about.I'd say that this isn't just the best combat sports book I've read. This is the best sports book I've read. It's the best psychology book I've read. It is as thorough a meditation on the human passion for fighting and testing oneself as has ever been written. If you are at all interested in mixed martial arts, boxing, traditional martial arts, the human mind, or competition, you owe it to yourself to check this book out. As far as Sam Sheridan's catalogue of modern combat sports goes, I can definitely say that he is the A.J. Liebling of this generation.

Good Book on Sports Psychology By Crimson With interviews from some of the best fighters and trainers in mixed martial arts and boxing, The Fighter's Mind is replete with the insights and words of wisdom of the elite in the fight game. The author travels to different top-notch gyms across the country, asking about the mental side of fighting. With interviews from Frank Shamrock, Freddie Roach, and Greg Jackson and many others, you get to go briefly inside the minds of the best of the best. At about midway through the book, however, you pretty much get the point: if you want to great at fighting (or anything) you need to have a burning desire to be great, an obsession, really. That obsession, coupled with unshakable self-confidence in oneself, is what creates champions (among other things, of course). The only problem I had with this book is that it kinda lost steam towards the end. After reading about two-thirds of the book, you begin to see the common thread between elite warriors, and it starts to get a little redundant. Ok, work very hard, want it more than anything else, and just believe, never give up...gotcha. And some fighters spoke of fighting in a very philosophical, poetic way that didn't make much sense, or at least not at first. The author goes into that tangentially in the final chapter titled "The Long Koan."Overall, a decent book. It has all the ingredients to inspire and motivate, even if you have no serious interest in fighting.

Think Like a Fighter By Randy Ehrler What follows are thoughts that occurred to me while reading The Fighter's Mind by Sam Sheridan. We are all fighter's. Life is a fight. A struggle. This is what many of us fail to realize. In so many ways we have become quite comfortable, even those of us who are failing in life are doing so comfortably - we are not threatened by starvation or abject poverty - we are "losing" in life amidst the comfort of big screen TV's, take out pizza, air conditioning and material abundance. Many of us are unhappy at the deepest level, but we bury the urge for change. We are propelled by the need to pay our bills and distracted by a cornucopia of novelties, pleasures and escapes. Time keeps ticking as we pass our lives away inside these velvet cages. What we want and most desire is possible. The cage door is not locked. We want change but fear stepping outside - into the unknown - into the possibility of failure. We are waiting - desperately - for someone to open the door for us, assure us that it is safe, to pave a way toward our dreams with no threat of failure. We believe that change comes from the outside - from someone or something ( a new law, a new leader, a new job, the lottery) - and spend our lives enviously dreaming, waiting, watching and lamenting those "lucky" ones who are living their dreams. You must be willing to fail in order to grow, to become everything you are capable of being.Attainment of our dreams and desires requires persistence, heart, courage, conviction, discipline - you have to be willing to FIGHT for it!That is the essence of life, it is "the fight." It is why I love MMA - no long-term contracts, no security, no pension - pure, raw life. Work hard, fight hard, learn and show up - everyday - and you will grow. If you also have talent, you may even succeed. No guarantees. That is the truth of life. We live in a world that craves security. What a fighter knows is that there is no security - you must forge your heart, mind and body every day in preparation to earn your way.The utopian dream of a "fair" world runs deep in our minds. We want tenure, pensions, health care benefits - we want to be cared for by our government or employers. Why? So we can live as children. If someone else carries the burden of responsibility - then we are free to focus on our fantasy football league. Those who truly succeed in this life do one thing before anything else - they accept full responsibility for their lives. The beauty of MMA is that NO ONE can help that fighter when the cage door closes - they are either prepared and ready to do battle - or not. What most of us fail to accept is that this is true of life. We are either ready for what the world is going to hand us - or we are toast. This lack of acceptance of reality has, in my opinion, led to the explosion in mental illness and addiction - people overwhelmed by the world and lacking the tools to deal appropriately either shutdown or hide - its like a collective PTSD.The fighter's mind is forged through effort, through loss, through discipline and mentoring. The ability to survive - and thrive - begins when we acknowledge what we do not know and willingly engage in the process of learning and accept the long struggle to knowing. You might get your ass kicked a time or three, but learn from it what you need and move on.Movies have made us believe that we can overcome our demons in 90 minutes. The reality is that it takes years - possibly a lifetime - to defeat the enemies within. That is the nuts and bolts it all. If you want to succeed - humble yourself, be patient, be willing to accept defeat, be open to learning, be disciplined in the pursuit and remain patient. No magic bullet. No secret trick. Just hard work and dedication.I have been a member of the mass mind for all of my adult life. As a child I held a sense of honor - I would fight for my principles - I would not think in terms of winning or losing, but of right and wrong, if it was wrong I would step in and take a stand. As an adult I have lived in fear - walking the line of "safety" - unwilling to take a stand - waiting for "someone else" to step in and make changes - to save us (me). I have been depressed, anxious, afraid, confused, angered by "unfairness," resentful, envious and mostly discouraged.I have decided to change. The Fighter's Mind has helped me see that the fight is worth it. I must surrender the outcome and be at peace with the struggle - to accept it as my foe and become dedicated to its defeat. Embrace the struggle! It is in the work that change occurs, not in the desire for change. If you are one of those people who has read all of the self-help books but remains mired in defeat - this book is a worthwhile read. You will see that there are no new ideas, no insights that will bring change in your life - it is only disciplined, courageous effort in the face of your demons. We all want an easier way out- and many profit by promising us one - but none exist. The Fighter's Mind provides insight into what it really takes to thrive in life. Read it, and its companion, A Fighter's Heart: One Man's Journey Through the World of Fighting, and you will have a clear vision of the "struggle" and of what real hard work and dedication look like.Stay Strong. Stay Hungry. Walk Tall.

Obviously it is dated, but as an Argentine who spent all her summer holidays on an estancia, as ranches are called in Argentina, I can vouch for its authenticity. The description of life on the Pampas, the distances, the size of the properties acquired in the 1850's are true to life. I don't know about the relationship with the native indians because, although attacks from the "malones", as the tribes were known, were common, I don't know enough about the fate of the white women kidnapped by the indians.

The Woodlanders, by Thomas Hardy

Review "Hardy's novels are full of love for places and pity for people. If they are to be read aloud, then these things must be felt within the voice of the reader. I find them in Rufus Sewell's voice! Sewell speaks to the inner ear and with the characters' talk heard as part of the story; their speech is differentiated, but only as far as is necessary and natural." Gramophone 1/1/97

From the Inside Flap Set in the secluded forest community of Little Hintock, Thomas Hardy's "The Woodlanders inextricably links the dramatic English landscape with the story of a woman caught between two rivals of radically different social statures. Grace Melbury is promised to her longtime companion, Giles Winterborne, a local woodlander and a gentle, steadfast man. When her socially motivated father pressures her to wed the ambitious doctor Edred Fitzpiers, Grace's loyalties shift--and her decision leads to tumultuous consequences. With its explorations of class and gender, lust and betrayal, "The Woodlanders is one of Hardy's most vivid and powerful works. This Modern Library Paperback Classic is set from the text of the 1912 Wessex edition and includes Hardy's map of fictional Wessex.

By darragh o'donoghue Hardy is my favourite poet, but I've always found the novels hard-going, too determinedly grim, too schematically fatalistic. For the first third of this novel, I felt the samme way, dutifully admiring the prose, but not really enjoying. Then I left it for a few months, read Proust, and came back to it. I started kicking myself. It's a masterpiece, an absolute joy for two reasons. Not the characters, who rarely rise above their stock roles - the decent, honourable heroine impossibly torn between passion and propriety; the manly, back-to-nature hero, who could come straight from COLD COMFORT FARM); the impoverished aristocratic cad; his wealthy lover, the promiscuous bored ex-actress golddigger; the bumbling middle-class trader of lowly origins. What astonishes first is Hardy's plot, related by a weirdly troubling narrator, awesomely intricate in itself, but full of an almost Nabokovian sadism. Situations, desires, hopes are set up and cruelly dashed as the beautiful narrative machinations begin cranking - the man-trap scene had me literally sweating. This irony, however, also has an emotional effect, as it reveals characters trapped by the social, gender and psychological limits the plot symbolises, and forces them into a humanity beyond their stereotype.Mostly, though, this is a novel written by a poet, and in its animation of the sexually charged woods, the lanes, glades, fields, sunsets, dawns, storms, drizzles, winds, breezes, nature is the book's true hero, full of almost supernatural agency. Hardy's gifts of description, his unearthing the unearthly, the uncanny, the inexplicable beneath the surface, are unsurpassed in Victorian fiction; while his non-didactic anger at social injustice is so much more compelling than the more literal Dickens'.

As some others have noted, it's not one of the "big 5" but certainly worth reading. Hardy's descriptions of the woodlands are beautiful, and I found the ending to be one of his most unpredictable. I wouldn't recommend reading it if you are feeling down, as the ending is sooooo wonderfully tragic (hehe), or if you're not a fan of Hardy's prose style, but otherwise it's a wonderful read. Very personal as well. I got the feeling it was written just for me :)

Moore The Woodlanders is not Thomas Hardy's most famous or acclaimed work but was his own favorite among his novels, and many - perhaps most - fans put it in his top tier. This diehard Hardy reader puts it just below that, which is to say it is truly great. Neophytes should read better-known works first, but everyone should stop here quite soon.Perhaps the most immediately attractive aspect is its vibrant setting. Hardy seems to truly bring The Woodlands to life, describing with a vivid precision that will make it linger in the mind long after reading. It is my favorite Hardy setting other than The Return of the Native's Egdon Heath and many fans' favorite. Most Hardy novels and much of his poetry is set in what he called Wessex - a part-real, part-dream area, based on his native Southwest England, that he made world famous. Perhaps no one equals his profound sense of place; he describes scenes so believably and importantly that they become integral to the story. This is a preeminent example. All the Wessex novels are valuable for showing how a long-vanished world looked and how its people thought, spoke, and lived but none perhaps more so than this. The Woodlands are probably the most rural part of Wessex, which truly says much - a handful of cottages scattered among a thick forest. The real places on which Hardy based the area were almost gone by the time of the book (1887) - had indeed started going even before his 1840 birth - and are certainly gone now, as is nearly every remotely similar place in the Western world. Hardy's descriptive power thus does us a great service by making such a long-lost place seem so real that we not only seem to see it but feel and smell it also. As in The Return, the setting is so important that it is practically a character - arguably even the most important. The woods are described somewhat anthropomorphically and are essential to the plot in many ways. Anyone who thinks such things can never be truly important to a story should read this; literature has few better examples.Characterization is also strong. This was always a Hardy high point, and The Woodlanders has some truly memorable personages: the intelligent and well-educated Grace, who has in many ways overcome her upbringing's conventional shortcomings but is also a true Woodlands native; Giles, who has genuinely noble feelings and sentiments but is held back in the world's eyes by lack of education and a life tied to the Woodlands; Fitzpiers, who is well-educated, intelligent, and capable but selfish, hedonistic, and in other ways loathsome; Melbury, who truly loves and wants the best for his daughter Grace and has other admirable qualities but whose lack of insight sometimes leads to rash decisions and unfortunate consequences; Marty, a slight, lonely figure who is hard-working and capable of great love but virtually unnoticed by all; the beautiful and lofty but eccentric and essentially selfish Mrs. Charmond; and more. Also, as often with Hardy, there is a band of colorful rustics serving as a sort of chorus. They add considerably to the local depiction, give some much-needed comic relief, and are important in discussing some of the major themes in less overt ways, making them more conventionally palatable and driving them home in a sense very different from the narration's high seriousness but at least as effective. This last is particularly important just before the end, as they get the last word on marriage, the main theme, subtly zeroing in on Hardy's point. The most interesting character now - as probably then - is Grace. Hardy is well-known for his heroines, and though not his most famous or fascinating, she is very intriguing in her own right. Like many Hardy heroines, she is educated well above most women of her era, which her class and location make all the more notable. Hardy again shows how unfairly such women were treated in an unapologetically sexist society; even with her many acquired and natural charms, Grace is unprepared for many of life's most important challenges because women were simply not given an opportunity. Even those in her position had few options other than marriage, and it is quickly apparent how naïve and ignorant even she is in this all-important area because of the relatively sheltered lives virtually all Victorian women lived.Marriage and human love relationships generally are the book's main concern; they are variously dramatized and reflected on in a larger sense. This had much contemporary relevance, but what might be called Hardy's philosophical approach also makes it of great universal important. Love is after all probably the most ubiquitous human feeling, and Hardy dealt with it often, frequently focusing on marriage's monolithic regulatory role. He once wrote in his journal that love thrives on propinquity but dies on contact - a claim he often fictionalized but perhaps never as clearly or fully as here. The Woodlanders is a savage yet subtle critique of the marriage institution in which Hardy's own troubled marriage and advanced views led him to lose faith. He later criticized it more overtly in The Well-Beloved and Jude the Obscure, but this condemnation is at least as strong for those willing to read between proverbial lines. More generally, the book paints a very bleak picture of human interaction itself; characters without fail attach themselves to the wrong person, love never being requited. Hardy thought the chances of mutual love reaching full fruition were near nil, and this is perhaps his most startling example. It may be a bit bleak for some, but his point is well made.Another major theme is class. Hardy had advanced views here also, which showed up again and again in his work, not least in this novel. Grace and her father are rare examples of nineteenth-century British upward mobility; there is much to admire in her concerted education and his hard work, but the book shows just how hard it was to overcome an unfair system that brands one from birth. Moving up increases their money and knowledge but makes human interaction very difficult; they are still looked down on by upper classes, but an understandable pride makes them hesitate about mixing with their own, most of whom are newly intimidated in any case. All this keeps Grace from marrying Giles, her true love, in favor of the aristocrat Fitzpiers, with dire consequences. Giles himself is now nervous about making his love known yet also incapable of returning Marty's more accessible affection. Fitzpiers is immediately struck by Grace but distraught when he realizes her class; unable to overcome desire, he succumbs but finds it impossible to mix with lower classes, much to the detriment of both. Hardy's sympathy clearly lies with the lower classes, and people like Henry James unsurprisingly attacked the book for vilifying the upper classes, who are portrayed as selfish, snobbish, pleasure-seeking, and despicable with few or no redeeming qualities. The conversation between Giles and Fitzpiers when the latter first sees Grace drives in this nail most forcefully - indeed unforgettably; it is one of Hardy's most powerful and thought-provoking scenes -, but it is present throughout in varying guises. As all this suggests, there is a strong fatalistic streak. Characters seem unable to overcome facts of birth and upbringing and are frequently victims of what might be called bad luck or cruel fate; chance and coincidence rarely turn out well. This is true for much of Hardy's work, and his later epic poem The Dynasts detailed what he called the Imminent Will, a blind force controlling human affairs, which had been implied here and elsewhere. Hardy was profoundly aware of humanity's less than microscopic cosmic significance and had long ceased to believe that life is overseen by any force that is benevolent or sympathetic to people. This can all be gleaned in The Woodlanders. It is not truly tragic like many of his novels, and the ending in particular at least has a sort of equilibrium - especially in contrast to the catastrophic ones he often favored -, though he elsewhere made clear that Fitzpiers will roam again. However, the book has many dark spots, and its thinly veiled social, philosophical, and theological views are bleak indeed. If all this sounds rather grim or dry, worry not; Hardy knew how to tell a story. Unlike many writers dealing with heavy themes, he always took care to have them arise naturally from a story rather than overwhelming it. He is virtually without the heavy-handedness and didacticism nearly always fatal in such works. His characters are a big part of this; plausible and sympathetic, we recognize our humanity in them, truly feeling with and for them. The plot is also so tight and superbly executed that, looking back, it seems to unfold near-inevitably, though anyone who guessed how specific events turned out would have surely been wrong. This of course plays right into Hardy's fatalism, but it is clear from reading the book just how much later writes owe him. Unlike most Victorian authors handling serious themes, he was supremely entertaining; his stories were not only engrossing but truly exciting, bursting with the kind of twists and suspense then so rare. Even pulp fans could hardly ask for more. The Woodlanders is a case in point. The climax with the deadly trap is especially well-done; readers will be on the edge of their proverbial seats until the surprising outcome. More fundamentally, Hardy's writing is profoundly emotional; he was deeply in touch with the uber-sensitive chords buried deep in humanity's very heart, striking them with power and precision. The Woodlanders is highly moving, shot full of pathos as well as other feelings and thoughts through which Hardy moves us with true artistry. This is a fine novel that is essential for anyone even remotely interested in Hardy - a true classic deserving more popularity and acclaim. We must not let it linger in the woods.
