1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Strange Story By cozykat There are a couple of crooks. The murder occurs during a jewel robbery. There is a clever inspector and his friend. There is a romance. The story is a bit strange in that it deals a lot with imagination. Sometimes it's hard to tell which events were real and which weren't. It does become clear later. Since it is a short novel, the action moves fairly fast.

Great Book About Retro Action By Lord Sinclair This is a great book.If you like 1960s and 70s action movies and TV, even early eighties gear like The A-Team and all that you’ll go for it in a big way.There’s interviews with people who made Chuck Norris movies, obscure Blaxploitation movies, Burt Reynolds type moonshine runner movies, Quinn Martin cop shows, British Sweeney style cop shows, Aussie 1970s cop shows (?!) and best of all lots of spy/James Bond stuff- On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Agent for H.A.R.M, Spytrap (with Tom Adams), Our Man Flint-Dead on Target, S.H.E: Security Hazards Expert.The author is obviously a Bond nut and there’s a great interview with Mike McStay, an actor who was considered for the part around the time of Diamonds Are Forever. Reading the piece he would’ve made a good one as he’s suave and funny as hell.It’s also got some great stills, twenty or so – anyone remember Lorne Greene as private eye ‘Griff’? Anyone seen James Brolin in High Risk? What about The London Connection, a 1970’s Disney Bond copy?Speaking of Bond, everybody in this book reckons Roger Moore is a top chap, and Robert Wagner is too!It’s not just fan stuff either, there’s lots of nuts and bolts stuff about staging actors and the techniques and trials of directing as well.It’s a bit pricey, but if you’re up for this kind of book, it’s money well spent as there’s not a lot out there that’s like it.

By La Mascara Don't be put off by the corny title, this is a great book for lovers of action movies and TV from the UK, USA, and Australia. It's a collection of interviews with writers, directors, and actors who worked extensively in the action genre mostly during the 60s,70s,and 80s. And it's not just the usual lineup of lionized hacks and overrated auteurs either. Taylor has sought out people who established themselves as "journeymen" [and women] in their fields, and with his enthusiasm for, and knowledge of their work he elicits frank responses and amusing anecdotes from them. You may not recognize all of the names or even the faces [though there are a few well chosen illustrations to assist], but I guarantee you'll be seeking out their work once you've read about it here.

The tennis version of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Vividly rendered scenes from Ireland, California and the South of France are merely the backdrop for a sustained drive towards tennis perfection. You really feel the passion and hunger Steve has for the game, his total commitment to self-improvement, and the ultimate self-discovery his quest brings him, through agonizing defeats and triumphant breakthroughs, rendered step-by-step and blow-by-blow with a supple, keenly perceptive, deadpan prose. I loved the role Rachel plays -- finally someone who was chasing the same dreams and therefore totally "got it", but also who believed in him and who could be as hard on him as she was on herself. The book brims with passion for the game and with an all-consuming drive to excel, learn from your mistakes, improve, overcome internal obstacles, and be "all you can be" -- while casually navigating pesky little issues such as growing up, cultural dislocation, graduating from college, getting a job, and starting a family. Or is the tennis mere allegory? It's an engaging and inspiring story.

By Candace L Egan Jungmann speaks to the challenges of committing to one's passion and the frustration and fear that get in the way. If you play tennis, there are thought-provoking forays in to the mind of someone who cares deeply about the game. On another level Jungmann demonstrates the stifling influence parents can have on their children as they lovingly guide their kids into a career that is safe instead of taking the risk of following their passion.The lesson here is to take the risk and try to do what you love. You may never make it to Wimbledon, but playing at Monte Carlo where many greats have played, is a fulfilling experience no matter if you win or lose.

By gregh There's a legend that goes with "The Merry Wives of Windsor," according to which Queen Elizabeth enjoyed Falstaff so much in the two "Henry IV" plays that she publicly wished Shakespeare would put him in another play. So, the idea goes, since Falstaff dies in "Henry IV, Part 2," Shakespeare wrote a regular comedy for Falstaff, what might now be termed a "prequel," but with nothing that would make it a history play. Naturally, with avid diehards out there still denying Shakespeare was even the author of the plays attributed to him, this legend is impossible to verify. It is, however, a good way of approaching the comedy. It was surely conceived as a showcase for Falstaff, highlighting the rascal in him (in real life he would be intolerable), and also demonstrating how irresistible his jokes and stratagems are. Don't be put off by the first scene of the play, which might be confusing because of an unusual surfeit of archaic words. Read on, and all will soon be made clear. Most of the play is easy reading, and the plots of the merry wives against Falstaff really do urge us on. The play is hard to put down. The ending is classic Shakespeare. I'm sure it isn't too much of a spoiler to say that Falstaff is treated much better than Malvolio (at the end of "Twelfth Night"). "Merry Wives" has a light, happy touch, and it ends on a merry note.

By Saam Barrager This book was recommended to me several times by bonairenses when I asked them: "Who are the great Argentine authors?" Nevermind that Benedetti is Uruguayo, only residing in Buenos Aires, this book is a phenomenal work of prose and I would recommend it to any one.Benedetti narrates the final months of a man's working life. When he falls in love with a younger woman he must come to terms with the loss of his wife many years prior, the estrangement of his children, the antics of a colleague, and mortality.The writing is honest and crisp, non-judgemental and refreshing. It's also an excellent introduction to Benedetti as it's incredibly short.I admit that I have not read this book in English, and in castellano Benedetti uses slang unique to Uruguay (similar to Argentina). Certainly some of the flavour of the book will be lost in the translation, though with a good translator its rich emotions ought be lost on no one.Cheers!

Writing a book using interviews with people who knew Abraham Lincoln and their account of events is difficult at best. Many times those stories will change in the telling and become embellished a little more with each telling.Mr. Whipple decided to keep the focus on Lincoln and his reactions during the war years and not the details of the battles. It doesn't give much detail about Mary Todd Lincoln. Which, makes this a great literary work for young people to get to know our 16th President.The story of Lincoln's life will make you laugh and make you cry while telling how a young boy from the Midwest wilderness in spite of the many set backs of life, grows into the very person needed at the worse time our country ever went through.

Review Reviewed by Jessyca Garcia for Readers' Favorite I absolutely loved Conflicting Webs by Darlene Quinn. This story is filled with just the right amount of drama. Everything that occurs is believable. The characters are mostly lovable and all of them are unique.

Every character has a reason for being in this book--no matter how bad, they all have a little good in them.

Overall, I really loved Conflicting Webs. I liked that Quinn wrote about Survivor's Guilt. I will be looking into reading the rest of the Web series as well as Quinn's other books. For anyone who enjoys drama and family stories.

Another Thinker By Peggy Kuntzelman I titled this review "another thinker" because like previous book by Darlene Quinn it makes you stop and think of what you would do faced with the same situation or in this case situations. I mention the previous books in this series because I have had the pleasure of reading them all but thanks to the author this book is very much a stand alone book also. "Conflicting Webs" introducing a lot of new characters to this series and the characters that are brought forward from the previous books you are given enough back story so you are never lost as to how they fit into this series, or in my case your memory is refreshed about how they fit into the series.While I know the main character in "Conflicting Webs" is suppose to be April Toddman Clark, I found myself more interested in the stories of the reluctant mother, Britany and the grieving mother, Madison. I enjoyed following the process of how Britany made the transformation from being totally irresponsible to finally realizing she needed to take charge of her life. It wasn't rushed and certainly didn't happen overnight.In my opinion a whole book could have been devoted to Madison and her recovery from the physical injuries due to a terrible accident and learning to deal with survivor's guilt so that she could move forward. This is one of those situations where you stop and wondering how you would handle it. i did enjoy that Madison was finally able to sit down and talk to the character of Ashleigh from this series who herself had gone through a situation where you wonder how you would handle it yourself.As with the previous books in this series I really enjoyed the Author's Note at the end of the book. I find it interesting to learn things I did not know about the retail world along with things I have observed myself and wanted to comment on.So I would definitely recommend "Conflicting Webs" to anyone who wants to read a fast paced, intriguing, character driven novel. I love the short chapters so you can put it down if you need to go do something else, however that is easier said than done.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A good multi-generational family novel By D. Hite I was surprised when I started reading Conflicting Webs. The blurb on the back of the book led to me to think the story was going to be mainly about April and Kyle. Conflicting Webs was so much more than that. It was a multi-generational tale told in multiple POVs. The story begins with Britany, Kyle's baby mama, not wanting their daughter Lindsay to be in April and Kyle's wedding. This one problem sets into motion a series of events and custody questions affecting not only April and Kyle, but Lindsay's entire extended family.Conflicting Webs grasped my attention from the beginning. The story was quickly paced and moved smoothly between characters' POVs. I liked how each character's POV added to the understanding of the story, especially Britany's. She wasn't a character I will ever love, but she reading her thoughts made her a little bit less of a villain to me. Even though Conflicting Webs is part of a series, I found that you could easily follow along without having to have read the previous books.There were just a couple of things that bothered me a bit while reading. First, the dialogue of young adult characters. The way their sentences were phrased just didn't seem natural to me. Most 20-40 year olds I know have a less formal way of arranging their sentences when they speak. Sometimes I forgot April wasn't an older adult woman. Toward the end, I felt like the custody and Britany storyline were tied up nicely, but the book just...ended. I would have liked a little more. I know it needed to wrap up with April and Kyle, but I found them to be some of the least exciting characters in the book.Overall, I really enjoyed Conflicting Webs and it's story of conflicting commitments in a large extended family.

By Hilary Barhydt Frank Strauss has written a terrific history of the New York Mets. With a sportswriter's attention to facts and color and a sports fan's love of history and anecdotes, he has captured the spirit of the Mets. This is a fun book for any Mets fan. In addition to my own copy, I have given four or five copies to other Mets fans.

Those Championship Seasons By DS from LA As a lifelong Mets fan who greatly enjoyed Frank Strauss' earlier study of the 1947 Yankees ("Dawn of a Dynasty"), I was happy to see him giving equal time to the Mets in his latest book. Strauss meticulously and in straightforward prose recaps the Mets' four National League pennant-winning seasons (1969, 1973, 1986, and 2000), two of which culminated in World Series victories (with 1986 against the Boston Red Sox being one of the most memorable Series ever played). The story is told largely by the players, coaches, and managers through a combination of new interviews conducted by Strauss and media statements made at the time of the recounted events. Reading this book brought back great childhood memories (Tom Seaver was my first-ever sports hero), reminded me of some great players I hadn't thought about in years, and vividly recreated some events that are forever seared into my brain (Strauss' description of the I-still-can't-believe-it-happened 10th inning of Game 6 of the '86 Series merits special commendation). But this is no mere rehash of box scores; Strauss ably blends the thrilling play-by-play action with a touching and nostalgic elegy for the late Shea Stadium, as well as a palpable love and respect for the game of baseball.

A brief, chronological look at the Mets playoff history with some transitional chapters in between. Not a lot new and some real misses. No discussion of the 1973 game 6 decision to go with Seaver on short rest. No mention of Strawberry bring pulled from game 6 in 86. While you will learn the attendance at every home playoff game, what you won't get is any opinion or analysis of the critical decisions involved in each series or the subsequent roster moves as the team rebuilt over the years.

I had a paperback years ago and it got burned up in a house fire. I have now replaced it with this Kindle edition. You'll want to keep referring to it. It contains a good variety of authors.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. For the horse lover By JP1 I admit that westerns are a guilty pleasure of mine. A place to go when I don't want to be where I am at the time. Max Brand's style of writing is classic western, hero's and villains, good guys and bad guys, wide open country, you get the point. This particular book requires a bit of horse knowledge to really work. The story is about an "outlaw" horse and it's relationship with man. If you know nothing about horses, or don't care for them a great deal, you may find some of the descriptions tedious or without meaning. On the other hand, horse lovers will find this fascinating. He captures the essence of that 'never really tame' element that is a part of such magnificent animals as well as that strange connection that some people get with certain horses. I highly recommend it and only deduct one star for the specificity of the topic.

It was very hard to get into at first, that my have been due to my lack of knowledge on horses and the old west. This book however deals with the trust of men and their animals really. As this horse Alcatraz is a horse who had been bread to race escapes his masters home and gets used to freedom. His escape comes at a terrible price though as he becomes known as a murderous beast and Marianne the new ranch owner wants him killed, but Alcatraz is a smart, tough an seems to be a magical horse, able to mystify his hunters that are unable to catch him. Marianne calls in the only man that can catch him Red Jim Perris, and at this point (nearly halfway through the book) is when the story picks up, nothing is straightforward in this book, the scenes with action are written quite well though.

I wanted a physical book, and this version exceeded my expectations. It is a beautiful format for a paperback, very high quality finish, larger than normal, and can easily grace a coffee table. It made a great gift. It was much cheaper in the Kindle version, but well worth the price for what I wanted. I may order another for myself, just because it is such a great horse story, besides being a "showpiece".
