Sappho: One Hundred Lyrics, by Bliss Carman

About the Author Bliss Carman FRSC (April 15, 1861 – June 8, 1929) was a Canadian poet who lived most of his life in the United States, where he achieved international fame. He was acclaimed as Canada's poet laureate during his later years. In Canada Carman is classed as one of the country's Confederation Poets, a group which also included Charles G.D. Roberts (his cousin), Archibald Lampman, and Duncan Campbell Scott. "Of the group, Carman had the surest lyric touch and achieved the widest international recognition. But unlike others, he never attempted to secure his income by novel writing, popular journalism, or non-literary employment. He remained a poet, supplementing his art with critical commentaries on literary ideas, philosophy, and aesthetics."

By Kohtaro Hayashi The title above shows all.Nobody knows Sappho's real life, but her spirit still exists now through her poems exactly. Mr Carman has proved this. William Bliss Carman is a true poet. His copious imaginative and astonishing construction which based on Sappho's many scattered fragments is a really splendid composition. It is constructed by rhythm, tone, and harmony, just like music. And some poems can be said his own words creation--an extreme example, the Poem Xll, surprisingly 'the first line only' attributes to Sappho's, and the rest fifteen lines are Carman's.It is out of the question for his Victorian style from the narrow sight. Thou, thy, hark, haply, hadst, etc. which he has used, are doubtless beautiful sound phonetically. The use of inversion makes it also. This book has a notable introduction by Charles George Douglas Roberts. (author's cousin also a poet who inspired Carman, and was knighted in 1935). We can go back to a hundred years ago at the first published time this Poetry in 1904.A candid advice; this edition is large 8vo, but its inside layout is very poor. No regard to the page-separation for the verses, particularly annoying verse-line's number. I recommend the Feminine Publishing edition. Here, the both of those problems are none.About Poem XC: In the edition of L.C.Page and Company MDCCCCllll (1904), the verse begins that, O sad, sad face....., not A sad, sad face..... I think "O" is a correct word.

He has made complete poems out of single lines. They may be beautiful and they may be poetic, but if you're looking for scholarship on Sappho, this is not it.

Blankenship As we know, only fragments of the writings of Sappho have been preserved; bits and snippets from here and there; portions of what was likely to have been a massive work. What a pity so much was lost.I must admit that I was misled a bit when I loaded this particular collection and was at first a bit disappointed to learn that only small portions of Sappho's original text had been used and then was added to and completed by William Bliss Carman. After I got over this disappointment (I should have known better), I actually enjoyed the beauty of this work. Carman held to the spirit of the original poet as well as anyone I have read in the past. There are some truly beautiful lines in this work.If though your objective is to perform research on the original works of Sappho, then you need to look elsewhere. Very little of her actually writing is present in this particular publication. That being said though, I do recommend this one simply because it is so beautifully written.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks

"Is this Heaven's cloud I sleep on is why my eyes see only white hazy shadows Are you saints floating here? Stop your flight, fair silent beings! Come closer so that I might know your strange faces!" The customized Cessna jet aircraft Sheila Stoffel is piloting experiences technical meltdown and crashes into rocky terrain mere miles from her hometown of Soleil. Horrifically injured beyond recognizable, Sheila is airlifted to the hospital where a team of specialists gather led by reconstructive surgeon, Christophe Thomas, MD. Sheila wakens in ICU mechanically ventilated and immobile swathed in plaster casts trying to make sense of her surroundings, physical condition and state of mind as she tries to associate words spoken in conversations between the faces passing over her across the only horizon she sees; the ceiling. Four former high school friends are reunited in an event none of them could possibly have planned. The Canadian-born author was raised without television and educated back and forth across the provinces between Vancouver and Toronto in one-room school-houses and the largest city campuses by an educator-mother possessed with a wanderlust spirit. Jeanette Skirvin, BSc. RDH (Loma Linda University School of Dentistry) resides by the seaside in California.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. is the culmination of the Christophe/Sheila love story which began as friendship in SNOW By jeanette skirvin FACE, the sequel to SNOW SIZZLING IN SOLEIL, is the culmination of the Christophe/Sheila love story which began as friendship in SNOW. Reunited by tragedy 15 years after high school graduation, neither Christophe nor her nurse caretakers recognize Sheila as she lay on a hospital ICU bed attended by her former friend, reconstructive-plastic surgeon, Dr. Christophe Thomas and childhood girlfriend and nurse, Melinda Buckleberry-Todd. Christophe closes in on Sheila's identity as clues gathered during the reconstruction process slowly reveal the truth. Meanwhile, Sheila tries to make sense of her surroundings and physical condition as she weaves words she hears in conversations between nurses and doctors with what she recalls of memories. This is a purely speculative approach to how the brain may come to healing through the power of speech after suffering massive trauma. And at the heart of this tale flows a deep and everlasting love.

It was a day when everything around seemed almost perfect: everything does, now and then, come nearly right for a moment or two, preparatory to coming all right for good at the last. It was the third week in June. The great furnace was glowing and shining in full force, driving the ship of our life at her best speed through the ocean of space. For on deck, and between decks, and aloft, there is so much more going on at one time than at another, that I may well say she was then going at her best speed, for there is quality as well as rate in motion. The trees were all well clothed, most of them in their very best.

Haeckler MacDonald wrote this over a century ago, and the language is hard on under-educated kids, but the adventure, the unexpected twists in the plot, and the moral lessons make this one of my absolute favorite books, even if the language is a bit hard to get through.MacDonald's adventure fantasy stories were the inspiration for Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and his daughter was even the inspiration for "Alice in Wonderland" - an impressive bit of literary history to take in!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. another great book from GM By classiclover I love all of George Macdonald's books, including the unspoken sermons. This book tells a story about a boy named Clare. How I grew to love him as I read along. He seems to be the model of what the Lord is referring to when He says that we must become like little children to enter the kingdom of God. I was so moved and challenged. I also like the spiritual insights and truths the author put in throughout the story. I'll miss the animals --Nimrod, Abdiel, Pummy, and Panther.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Moralistic, entertaining. By Jean towner Although some reviewers found the language archaic, I did not. It is a comfort to read something written in a good style. This is a book suitable for children with some potent messages for adults as well. After an unsure start, eventually I read it twice!

Finally, the work of Wilfried Hansen and Dr. Jürgen Synnatzschke is available as a book. So far, it was scattered in 11 separate issues of the scientific journal Beiträge zur Naturkunde Niedersachsens and only accessible to a small number of experts. In the meantime, these issues are all out of print. They have now been revised, updated with extensive new data and united into a single book. The resulting monograph treats the tail feathers (rectrices) of the birds of Central Europe. The identifying characters of the tail feathers of more than 300 bird species are described in detail and depicted on first- class black-and-white drawings. New measurement tables for the longest wing feather complete the work. The foreword by Prof. Dr. Urs N. Glutz von Blotzheim makes this historical work a real classic of ornithology. An English summary and image captions in English open this German work to an international public. Erstmals liegt das Werk von Wilfried Hansen und Dr. Jürgen Synnatzschke als Buch vor. Die Steuerfedern der Vögel Mitteleuropas: The Tail Feathers of the Birds of Central Europe (German Edition), by Wilfried Hansen, Jürgen Synnatzschke

About the Author Originally, Wilfried Hansen wanted to study biology and become a forest ranger, but because of the difficult economic situation after the second world war, he could not fulfil his desire. However, he was fortunate to get to know a personal mentor in the field of biology who taught him a lot of what he could have learnt at university. This personal mentor of Wilfried Hansen was Dr. Hugo Weigold, the founder of the world-renowned ornithological station of Heligoland and Director of the Natural History Museum in Hanover. It was Dr. Hugo Weigold who advised him to build up a feather collection, and to use this collection not as an end in itself, but primarily for scientific research, which then gave rise to this teatise. In 1972, Wilfried Hansen established the Feather Research Group, which has grown into the largest scientific working group in the field of feather research in the world today. Co-author Dr. Jürgen Synnatzschke grew up in a village in former East Germany, where he was shaped by all kinds of day-to-day necessities in his parents’ household, contact with local ornithologists and work as a lumberjack. A sudden turn in his life led him to study mathematics in Russia, where he did his Ph.D., and subsequently worked for the scientific journal ‘Zeitschrift für Analysis und ihre Anwendungen’. As co-author of this book, he contributed significantly to its success. He invested as much as he could into the texts. However, the actual concept of the book, the identification key, which forms its intellectual core, the measurement tables and almost all drawings, are the sole merit of Wilfried Hansen. Therefore, Dr. Synnatzschke believes that Wilfried Hansen deserves an honorary Ph.D. for his scientific achievement.

Jabberwocky: A Novella, by Theodore Singer

Review Marvelous!Theodore Singer's epic fantasy novella, Jabberwocky, reminded me of how much I loved quest fantasies when I was a young adult. That early magic was rekindled as I read Jabberwocky. Singer's writing is lucent and rich, and his imaginative tale is a sheer delight to read. Jabberwocky is a most impressive debut offering by this author, and I hope to be reading more of his work in the future. Jabberwocky: A Novella is most highly recommended.Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite

About the Author I used to work for literacy programmes and educational development programmes. I am still an educator, but my current employment means I have to use a pen name.

By Elena Linville I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and I really wanted to like this story more than I did.The premise sounded interesting enough: A young man decides to undertake an epic quest which had been passed from father to son for 500 years. The quest is to find and kill the fantastic beast called Jabberwocky. Even though he has never been further away from home than a 2 days travel distance, he is enthusiastic about what he believes to be the biggest adventure of his life. He will encounter many strange and fantastical creatures on his journey and realize that his quest is not as much about a mystical monster, but about discovering his own worth. So yes, this had the potential to be a very good tale of self-discovery where the hero, young and idealistic in the beginning of the story, slowly grows up and becomes a real man. Unfortunately, the realization fell short of my expectations.I feel like a need to put a disclaimer here. I love stories with a strong and memorable voice. If the protagonist doesn't jump from the page and straight into my head in the first chapter, chances are that I won't finish the book. Unfortunately, Jabberwocky has no voice. Oh, don't get me wrong, it's well written. The descriptions are beautiful and often even nostalgic. It feels though, that the author sometimes gets carried away by the strange places he is describing and the action slacks off. It's a short novella, but I had to force myself not to skip ahead in some passages. My problem is that I couldn't empathize with Astreus. I couldn't "see" him. Even after I finished the story, he remained a faceless name for me. It's hard to follow a character you don't care about.I think the main reason for this is that the writing is too formal and indifferent shall I say? The author uses exactly the same voice to describe the city of cats and the island of immortals. But in the first place, Astreus just spends some time helping a cat in exchange for information on the Jabberwocky, whereas on the island, he encounters his first love and his first betrayal that almost brings him to suicide. Where is the passion and the desperation of this? I felt absolutely nothing. My other problem is that the dialogues feel stilled and staged. Once again, everybody Astreus encounters talks the same, whether it's a cat or an old noble who spent most of his life locked in his castle. A highly educated cat with a passion for chess cannot use the same words and phrases as a noble who barely knows how to read and write. It's a quick read and I liked exploring some of the places the author's vivid imagination has created, but the novella would have been much more enjoyable if the writing had a bit more "life" to it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good reading By LAS Reviewer Embracing an old family tradition can be an incredibly meaningful experience. All Astreus has to do now is figure out the best way to use it.Astreus was a well-developed, likeable main character. His contemplative, curious personality wasn’t at all what I was expecting out of someone who decides to hunt down an ancient beast, but it fit the tone of the plot incredibly well. I was also impressed by how he expressed his intelligence. He struck a smart balance between accepting his strengths without bragging about them and acknowledging his own weaknesses. There were a few small pacing issues. At times the narrative lingered a little too long on the strange, wonderful places Astreus discovered during his search for the Jabberwocky. The descriptions of these settings were fascinating, but including so many details about them did occasionally slow down the plot at inopportune times. This is a minor criticism of an otherwise amazing story, though. With that being said, the world-building in this tale was incredibly strong and complex. It stayed true to the types of people, places, and monsters I’d expect from a fantasy novel set in the past, but it also included a few fun surprises. As eager as I was to move forward and discover what happened to the Jabberwocky, I really enjoyed seeing the protagonist explore the far north. This could have easily been expanded into a full-length book.originally posted at long and short reviewsJabberwocky: A Novella is a must-read for anyone who loves the original Lewis Carroll poem about this creature.

At first I wasn't sure that I would like it much.I decided to review it anyway and I am glad that I did. This is the story of Astreus who's family has always had a special quest that generations of his ancestors have basically ignored. At first the book was a bit slow, but I found myself fascinated by the way he talked of going on this wild quest.I cheered when he set out to find the Jabberwocky...where he discovers a grand adventure.Where he finds immortal beings, talking-chess-playing-cats, evil wizards who've repressed people, a crazy follower and a letter...about the bridge of dreams. That part was a bit creepy...and then to come to the end and find the jabberwocky only to be faced with a choice. Nope not telling what it was you'll have to read the book to find out.So for me this was a EPE or 5 starI loved it even though it was short. I liked the choice he made in the end too.About the Author:Theodore Singer used to work for literacy programmes and educational development programmes. Winds of the Prairie, by Joyce A. Halvorsen

About the Author Joyce A. Halvorsen, author of “Winds of the Prairie” drew inspiration for this novel from family stories passed down through the generations. Her grand-parents and greatgrandparents immigrated to what is now South Dakota and Nebraska during the early 1900's. Their stories became the stuff of family legends. Ms. Halvorsen worked for the University of Wisconsin Madison Library System for many years and is a graduate of Edgewood College, Madison, Wisconsin. Upon graduation from Edgewood, she was presented the Class Human Issues award for her research and study of “The Native American Creation Story: Coyote and Changing Woman.” As a former teacher and librarian, she still enjoys researching genealogy and American history. Although this novel is strictly of her imagination, certain people and places mentioned are historical and real. This book is dedicated with deep respect to those who settled the Dakota Territories and the Sioux tribes who were its first guardians. They were, and are still, the back-bone and blood of our nation. WINDS of the PRAIRIE Joyce A. Halvorsen

He became a lawyer, and dabbled in Liberal politics, but the immediate success of 'The Prisoner of Zenda', his fourth work, turned him entirely to writing. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Not Quite a Mystery By JAScribbles Anthony Hope is best known for two other titles, The Prisoner of Zenda and Rupert of Hentzau. The Secret of the Tower was published in 1919 and takes place in a little village just outside of London.Something odd is going on in Cottage Tower and the townsfolk of Inkston are trying to figure it out. The main characters of this book are Dr. Mary, Cynthia, Captain Naylor, Mr. Saffron, Beaumaroy, Dr. Irechester, and a handful of others.Old Mr. Saffron is the owner of Cottage Tower and he's taken on two companions. Once a week the elderly man and one of his new guests, Beaumaroy, take a trip into London. The pair return the same day lugging a heavy brown bag.The story started out with promise and I was clicking quickly to see what would happen next. Unfortunately things seemed to fizzle about 60% in. It was an interesting story even though there wasn't a clear murder or crime. I was enjoying myself, but sadly toward the end it lost its intrigue.I found Hope's writing style a bit odd. He has a habit of backing into things. He will go on for a few pages offering detail and then tell you what he's specifically talking about. This happened on many occasions. The book opens with two females talking. One is crying and very upset about something. After five or six pages of this we are finally told who they are, what they're doing, and why one of them is upset. This backwards writing became bothersome after a while. The free Kindle edition is well edited and there aren't many transfer issues. I did see a handful of places that appeared _like_ this. I assume it was _supposed_ to be italicized. This book also has a sexist tone or treatment of women. Dr. Mary Arkroyd is a female doctor and the author uses sarcasm and jabs to point out his feelings on the subject. Come to think of it, I didn't like the way he portrayed any of the females in this book. I realize this was written nearly 100 years ago and times were different then, BUT I've read many classics and haven't encountered one with these same attitudes. They were subtle, but definitely present. It appears Hope thought all women were silly, gossipy, or inferior nincompoops.I will pick up The Prisoner of Zenda and see if Anthony Hope continues this viewpoint of women in that story as well.

I really loved the way the author developed the characters and continuously draws you in with constant plot twists that are generally surprising and fascinating. I found the main character maddening at times, but I think that is part of what draws you into this book so much. If you are looking for a great read that will draw you in and keep you yearning for more, than this would be a great choice.

My only complaint is how terrible the decision making of the main character is. I mean, there are times you just want to pull your hair out or throw the book across the room. The real heroes are supporting characters though, and they really shine throughout the entire story. If you are looking for a book that is wildly entertaining, albeit it infuriating at times, you should give this book a try.

I expected to learn more about exactly where to gain access to the Metolius river as I have never been able to find more than one or two spots that I could get to it without trespassing on private land. I expected more detailed information about where, when, and how to use particular patterns on each river. In short, it didn't tell me anything I didn't already know.

The day arrived. A post-chaise stood in front of the old grey manor-house. I have it all before me. The pointed gables—the high-pitched, dark weather; stained roof—the numberless latticed windows—the moat, now dry, which had once served to keep out a body of Cromwell’s horse—the tall elms, which had nestled many a generation of rooks—the clump of beech trees, and the venerable wide-spreading oak—the broad gravelled court on one side, and the velvety lawn on the other, sloping away down to the fine, large, deep fish-pond, whose waters, on which I had obtained my first nautical experiences, as seen through the green foliage, were sparkling brighter than ever under the deep blue of the summer sky.

Long ago, as a child, I read "Voyage of the Dainty" by the same author - a hand me down from my grandfather who was vaguely related to the author. But this is the first time I have managed to find another of his many books since then. The author was a prolific chidlren's writer in the late Victorian era. His works have not endured, and they are rightly not considered "classics". But that dod not mean this was not a very interesting read. The book is about a boy who is taken on a sailing voyage around the World by his father. The ship they sail on must have been the most pious one in the British Isles, judging by the way the captain and crew conduct themselves. The book is highly didactic. On the voyage across the atlantic we are allowed to listen in on lectures on trade winds, ocean currents, the gulf stream, the Sargasso sea and such like. There is a good deal of meteorological explanation, which is not surprising as the writer was brother to George Kingston, the father of Canadian meteorology. We also have some wonderful descriptions of all the places that are visited by the ship. We learn why the British settled the Falkland Islands, what life was like in Chile at that time (allegedly) and such like. We see the effects of the California gold rush and tour the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii), with a wonderful spelling of some of the island names. And it goes on - but it takes 250 pages to get to any great adventure (when the ship is taken by pirates). There are many smaller adventures first, including a volcanic eruption (of course! that always happens when you visit Hawaii). All in all this book is wonderful - not because of its storyline, nor because of its characterisations (are there any? I am not sure!), nor its clunky dialogue, but because of what it represents: an archetypal Victorian Boy's Own adventure. It is full of cultural assumptions and references that are both amusing and enlightening on the Victorian mind set. It is not a particularly "politically correct" book, but on the other hand it is clearly attempting to foster knowledge, understanding and compassion in the minds of its readers. It will also do a great deal to educate anyone interested in the period about the world at that time, as long as it is read critically. Occasionally it will simply amuse (I grinned at the aprobation upon Sandwich islanders for cooling themselves when they have a fever - thus "closing their pores and hastening their deaths").I am stunned to find that it has recently been republished, but nevertheless it is a worthwhile read.

Sir Walter Scott’s love of the country induced him, after his marriage in 1797, to settle in a cottage at the pretty village of Lasswade, near Edinburgh. Four years after leaving this district he took Mr. Morritt of Rokeby to see the little dwelling, telling him that, though not worth looking at, ‘it was our first house when newly married, and many a contrivance it had to make it comfortable.’ He then enumerated various devices, by which he had secured for Mrs. Scott and himself what seemed to both, at the time, additional convenience and elegance in and about their home. His reminiscences culminated in an account of an arch over the gate-way, which he had constructed by fastening together the tops of two convenient willows and placing above them ‘a cross made of two sticks.’

My dad was always an avid golfer and so has tried to get me into the sport from a young age, but it's only recently I've come around. My first few months were pretty hopeless, as I could barely even hit the ball let alone get close to par. Since finding this book I'm happy to say my golf skills have improved significantly! I love how it individually addresses every potential problem (of which I had many) and gives solutions for each.

Best Ebook PDF The Beak of the Finch: A Story of Evolution in Our Time, by Jonathan Weiner

The Beak of the Finch tells the story of two Princeton University scientists―evolutionary biologists―engaged in an extraordinary investigation. They are watching, and recording, evolution as it is occurring―now―among the very species of Galápagos finches that inspired Darwin’s early musings on the origin of species. They are studying the evolutionary process not through the cryptic medium of fossils but in real time, in the wild, in the flesh.

The finches that Darwin took from Galápagos at the time of his voyage on the Beagle led to his first veiled hints about his revolutionary theory. But Darwin himself never saw evolution as Peter and Rosemary Grant have been seeing it―in the act of happening. For more than twenty years they have been monitoring generation after generation of finches on the island of Daphne Major―measuring, weighing, observing, tracking, analyzing on computers their struggle for existence.

We see the Grants at work on the island among the thousands of living, nesting, hatching, growing birds whose world and lives are the Grants’ primary laboratory. We explore the special circumstances that make the Galápagos archipelago a paradise for evolutionary research: an isolated population of birds that cannot easily fly away and mate with other populations, islands that are the tips of young volcanoes and thus still rapidly evolving as does the life that they support, a food supply changing radically in response to radical variations of climate―so that in a brief span of time the Grants can see the beak of the finch adapt. And we watch the Grants’ team observe evolution at a level that was totally inaccessible to Darwin: the molecular level, as the DNA in the blood samples taken from the birds reveals evolutionary change.

Here, brilliantly and lucidly recounted―with important implications for our own day, when man’s alterations of the environment are speeding the rate of evolutionary changes―is a scientific enterprise in the grand manner, and abstraction made concrete, a theory validated in life.

The Beak of the Finch: A Story of Evolution in Our Time, by Jonathan Weiner

Amazon.com Review On the Galapagos Islands Charles Darwin gave his first hint at his theory of natural selection, writing about the finches he studied there. In Darwin's time there was no proof of this theoretical mechanism for evolution. Indeed it would have been thought absurd to imagine observing it actually happen; the process was thought to take geological time spans. Weiner, an outstanding science journalist, details research done in the last 20 years that proves otherwise. Biologists Peter and Rosemary Grant have documented the evolution of Darwin's Galapagos finches, demonstrating that it is neither rare nor slow, but can be watched by the hour. Weiner's superb account reads like a thriller and won the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction.

From Publishers Weekly For more than 20 years Rosemary and Peter Grant have divided their time between Daphne Major in the Galapagos and Princeton University. On the tiny island they have intensively studied six species of Darwin's ground finches; at Princeton, they analyze their collected data. In following their work Weiner ( Planet Earth ) tells a remarkable story of continuing evolution, and of the painstaking research that reveals it. The Grants documented two dramatic changes in the finches: after a drought in 1977 reduced their numbers by 85%, the surviving birds became larger, in weight, wingspan and beak; after El Nino's floods in 1983, the trend was reversed. The Grants found that during food shortages the difference of one millimeter in the size of a finch's beak could determine its life or death. In his eloquent and richly informative report, Weiner surveys as well research on evolution being done on crossbills, sticklebacks and fruit flies. Illustrations. 40,000 first printing; BOMC, QPB , History Book Club and Natural Science Book Club alternates. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal This is an account of Peter and Rosemary Grant's research on the microevolutionary modifications that occur in finch beaks as they adapt to environmental changes. Analysis of data collected from 18,000 birds on a Galapagos island over 21 years conclusively demonstrates that the pressures of natural selection are currently altering wild populations. Also, by incorporating others' work on present-day evolutionary variations in fish, insects, and microbes, Weiner (The Next One Hundred Years, LJ 2/1/90) challenges the concept of evolution as a time-frozen process. Harmonized with the writings of Charles Darwin, this book provides the facts to bring alive evolution as an ongoing process. Highly recommended for general collections, but informed readers would do better with Peter Grant's own Ecology and Evolution of Darwin's Finches (Princeton Univ. Pr., 1986).Frank Reiser, Nassau Community Coll., Garden City, N.Y.Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

A great introduction for the student of evolutionary biology, or the layman. Weiner's book destroys two of the greatest myths about evolution. 1. It's slow. 2. It can't be observed. The study of the Galapagos Finches not only proves the importance of evolution as a contemporary subject but as one that can be observed RIGHT NOW in the world around us. It's almost astonishing to see how simple evolution truly is, how it occurs in quantifiable baby steps that we can see, if we only take the time to carefully observe. Weiner not only demystifies evolution, but makes it as a topic, thoroughly accessible to the interested layman. His prose is neither dry nor technical and in fact, makes for quite an enjoyable read. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

47 of 48 people found the following review helpful. Turn around! Evolution is happening NOW! By M. Nichols-Haining Weiner sets the reader down with the ghost of Darwin, on the Galapagos Islands where the Grants have been studying since 1973. He introduces us to 'Darwin's finches,' the same birds Darwin observed and wrote about in "Origin of the Species".We're introduced to a populationg that is perfect for evolutionary studies--a limited number of species in a closed ecosystem on an isolated island. Darwin couldn't have known what his observations would lead to so many years later, but Weiner shares with us the Grants meticulous study of over 20 generations of finches. Thousands of individual birds were measured, and their progeny tracked. Through this book, we see what they saw--evolution in action.Weiner weaves facts into a nice story. The book is engaging and reads like a novel, so much so that my 13 year-old daughter is now reading it.The conclusions (and no, this isn't a spoiler) are that evolution by natural selection occurs and that selection can occur quickly (it's not always a slow process). Weiner (and the Grants) also touches on speciation in fish populations, and bacterial and viral evolution. This was required reading in an introductory evolution class in college. I hope, someday, students in high school will be assigned this book. It was excellent, and will probably be wrapped up as Christmas gifts for a few of my friends and family.

26 of 26 people found the following review helpful. absolutely first-rate science journalism By Robert J. Crawford Weiner has written a great book on evolutionary science. Instead of a frozen doctrine whose outlines are generally agreed upon as a quasi-religion, Weiner demonstrates how the modalities of evolution - how it actually occurs in nature - are still under investigation. It is a snapshot of an evolving science, carried out over a lifetime of research by two distinguished scientists. One of the particular things they are attempting to observe directly is a speciation event - the creation of a new species of finch - which we long assumed must take place over geologic time and hence is unobservable. But in the process, Weiner reviews the notion of evolution, with fascinating tidbits from Darwin's original research and thoughts on these same finches of the Galopagos. It is a brilliant portrait of the cutting edge in science as well as a detailed review of many basic notions of evolution. It is also a beautifully written book, indeed a masterpiece of elucidation. And it is all hard science, rather than the pseudo-scientific pap that passes for it in so many popular magazines today. While its rigor makes the book a challenge to read, it is well worth the effort.Recommended, one of the best pieces of scientific journalism I ever read.
