Chatterer the Red Squirrel had been scolding because there was no excitement. He had even tried to make some excitement by waking Bobby Coon and making him so angry that Bobby had threatened to eat him alive. It had been great fun to dance around and call Bobby names and make fun of him. Oh, yes, it had been great fun. You see, he knew all the time that Bobby couldn't catch him if he should try. But now things were different. Chatterer had all the excitement that he wanted. Indeed, he had more than he wanted. The truth is, Chatterer was running for his life, and he knew it.

Author and editor of numerous children's books, Thornton W. Burgess was also a noted conservationist. In writing for youngsters he combined a gift for storytelling with his love of the outdoors, creating an entertaining menagerie of animals whose adventures he skillfully recounted in a series of charming fables. In them, he taught young readers about nature and encouraged them to love the "lesser folk in fur and feathers."In this delightfully told tale, Burgess chronicles the escapades of Chatterer the Red Squirrel, who's known throughout the Green Forest as a mischief maker. Narrowly escaping the clutches of Shadow the Weasel and Redtail the Hawk, the bushy-tailed little fellow decides to leave the forest for a new home, only to learn that curiosity, carelessness, and mistrust can lead to a heap of troubles.First published in 1915, this engaging story will charm readers of all ages — as well as young listeners.Unabridged (1992) Dover republication, in association with the Thornton W. Burgess Museum and the Green Briar Nature Center, Sandwich, Massachusetts, of the edition published by Little, Brown, and Company, Boston, 1915.

Great animal adventure with life lessons By L Youngman Chatterer the Red Squirrel is a precious animal adventure story that young children will love. While reading it to my 7 year old, my 11 and 13 year olds would inevitably wander into the room. Chatterer is a mischievous little red squirrel. If he's not picking on Shadow the Weasel and learning the hard way what an unruly tongue can do, he's in Farmer Brown's Corn CRib stealing corn. His mischieviousness finally catches up with him and because of his carelessness Farmer Brown's boy traps him. He then becomes a prisoner, although a quite comfortable one. He soon realizes that freedom is much more important than anything else. Throughout the story he learns many life lessons, although they seem small, which we as humans should take to heart. I would highly recommend this book.

The story is about Jerry Muskrat and a group of his friends, such as Spotty the Turtle and Grandfather Frog as they try to solve the mystery of why their beloved Smiling Pool is slowly fading away. This story also ties into the events of another one of Burgess' books: The Adventures of Paddy the Beaver (Dover Children's Thrift Classics).During the quest to try and save the Smiling Pool, young readers are taught valuable lessons on nature that I'm sure they will find entertaining. Their minds' are also broadened with the short poetry that opens up most of the chapters.Eventually, when the reason for the Smiling Pool's diminishment is realized, Jerry Muskrat steps up and does what is necessary to save the Pool; all while standing up to his bigger cousin, Paddy the Beaver. Jerry and Paddy then work out a plan that is beneficial to both of them. This book is 90 pages long with short 3-4 page installments, and has big easy to read font; ideal for young readers or for parents partaking in bedtime readings for their children. The black and white illustrations are also wonderfully crafted and very descriptive. I hope you give the book a try.Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book.

I sat down one morning and what a treat to relax and read about Jerry. It was like being a kid again. Maybe my grandkids will like them, maybe they won't, but these paperbacks are as good as the originals.
