By Tracet Oh, yes, I quite enjoyed Five Children and It and The Phoenix and the Carpet and so on when I was a child; they're magnificent children's books. But listening to the Librivox recording of The Story of the Treasure-Seekers makes it very, very clear that the magnificent Ms. Nesbit had very firmly in mind the parents who would be reading the books aloud at bedtime. One beautiful example is a scene in which an adult abruptly rises from his seat and walks away to stand at the window with his back to the children in his office. The narrator says he believes the man was trying to conceal his emotions. Which is very true; the emotions, however, were not what the narrator thought. But the narrator, and any child reading or listening who has utter faith that all is just as the narrator perceives it, may believe one thing; the beautiful layer of comedy in the moment is reserved for the grown-ups.Thank goodness we get something; in almost everything else the children are the fortunate ones. The Bastable children possess an innocence which I'm very much afraid is impossible for even a twelve-year-old today. I've seen comments out there amongst the reviews about "imperialist overtones" and casual racism. Thing is, though, this was first published in 1899, and like it or not the world was a very different place then, and as I read it even what could be considered racist has an innocence that keeps it from being offensive. The children are given to understand that a visitor is an Indian, and - fed on adventure novels - assume Amerind, and ask him about beavers. He's India Indian, though, and has no information on such creatures. I honestly don't see how the children's honest excitement about and sympathy for someone from far away who describes himself as a poor broken-down fellow (which they also take literally) can be translated as racist, especially in 1899, and the one extremely unfortunate exclamation that can be (the same as is found in L.M. Montgomery's A Tangled Web) was, sadly, a much more common epithet a hundred years ago. These are the sort of fictional children that make me despair over today's kids: imaginative, well-read, well-spoken, thoughtful under the childish self-centeredness, and self-sufficient; they make today's kids (American, at least) look like Neanderthals. They're not perfect little angels - E. Nesbit was never stupid. But they do set a ludicrously high standard.Dora, the eldest (at 13 or 14?), comes off as a bit of a prig (though this is dealt with in a later chapter in such a way that it made me cry), desperately trying to maintain some moral high ground in a horde of siblings who think it would be absolutely smashing if there were still highwaymen on the heath - or, even better, if they could be highwaymen on the heath. Her objection is that it's "wrong" - as in illegal and people hang for such things, not so much as in the victims of the highwaymen didn't think it was quite so smashing. The again-innocent bloodthirstiness of the kids is remarkable, and just fun.Oswald, the oldest boy at 12 and (you might guess, or you might not!) the narrator of the story, is very nearly as brave and honourable as he wants to appear, and very straightforward. It's rather lovely to see him reluctantly, realistically doing the right thing throughout the book, proceeding quietly and alone when practical - the older ones all do that, shouldering responsibility and striving to make things right when they go wrong. The fierce affection and loyalty among the siblings is, like their father's poverty and worries, never explicitly stated: it doesn't have to be. It is shown, not told. The four younger children - Noel and Alice and H.O. and Dickie, ranging down to I believe six years old - are every one expected by their elder siblings to be just as sharp and responsible and willing and able to contribute as Oswald and Dora. Some allowances are made for their extreme youth, but for the most part they are equal partners in the treasure-seeking, receiving an equal share in any profits - though sometimes excused by protective siblings from punishments.I don't remember E. Nesbit reducing me to tears in the past. This did. And, yes, I laughed out loud. I missed the magic element of some of the other books - but only at first. It didn't take long to realize that most of the magic of E. Nesbit's writing is actually in E. Nesbit's writing. To that point: "No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally - and often far more - worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond." ~ C.S. Lewis. I look forward to reading E. Nesbit when I'm fifty, and beyond.

Grotzke Point: A true view of a person can be seen when he acts upon what he believes to be true, not necessarily what has been "proved" to be true.Path: The Bastable children, 6 in total, are in search of restoring the lost fortunes of the good Bastable family name. Their mother died several years earlier, and the business of their father is not good. They each concoct a way in which they believe that they will be able to restore the lost fortunes. Chapter by chapter they each try their ways at encountering treasure. Their full imaginations carry the reader through a world in their minds which is perhaps much more real than the world which I have chosen to see.Sources: An imagination alive with the fire of youth.Agreement: The imagination is not a hindrance, or a childish bane. It is the lens through which we see our world, the interpretive grid by which we understand what is beyond.Personal App: Some of the bravest people in this world are under the age of 10. Those who act nobly upon what they believe, not necessarily what has been proved to be true, are those with real courage. Anyone can walk to the bathroom at night because they have convinced themselves that no one is in the house. But the child who walks stiffly down the hallway when he is convinced that there is a robber in the house, he is the braver.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I would have liked to see the ending changed to be more of a recognition of the true fortunes they possessed in their imagination and family. I laughed at parts, nearly cried at others.

Nesbit's Funniest and Most Accessible Book By Pop Bop So, here it is - a Kindle freebie with loads of positive reviews, but it's from 1899 and you suspect the positive reviews may just be filtered through the gauzy haze of happy childhood reading memories. Is it worth a try? I suggest the answer is "Yes".Edith Nesbit was not a Victorian novelist with either a tendency toward vapors or an intimidating moralistic streak. She was most certainly a pip - opinionated, idiosyncratic, courageous, and undeterred by lack of precedent. She basically pioneered the writing of children's books that featured realistic children, honest humor, and respect for young readers. She avoided morals in favor of plain common sense, and she understood that siblings could love and support each other even while bickering. There is nothing stodgy about her books except for stodgy things and people she makes a bit of fun of.Many of her more famous books are fantasies or have an element of "Boy's Own" adventure, but this book could readily be put forth as her funniest. There is broad humor, witty commentary, irony, and dry as dust understatement that readers of many different ages and abilities will pick up on to a greater or lesser degree. While you might expect it, the writing is not terribly formal or complex, just a bit more structured. It would be easy enough even for a younger reader to get into the flow of Nesbit's elegant and engaging, but light and very reader-friendly writing style. The Bastable kids are good, funny, bright kids. They are also brave and honorable. They have the kid equivalent of style. Even if they do mess up a bit it's usually because they tried to do too much rather than too little. Their conversations, both among themselves and with adults, are as fresh and vivid as though they took place yesterday and any of the Bastables could slip right now into a middle grade school daze novel and fit right in - that's how good Nesbit was.So, well worth a toss and likely to be a winner. Please note that I found this book while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to the publisher of this book.

If you see the ripped body of models and actors in magazines and on television and it fills you with a twinge of envy then this book is for you. In today's times, a lot of importance is given to physical appearance and presentation. This is often portrayed as a bad thing, but it can actually be quite beneficial. It is all in the way you look at it. An increased consciousness about looks has coaxed people to live a more controlled and fit lifestyle. Exercise is a big part of remaining fit and healthy. There are two major types of exercises that exist: cardio and strength training. The earlier option involves fast paced movements to increase the heart rate and the blood flow. While cardio is great for burning some calories and introducing some activity in your life, it doesn't help much in achieving the ripped body that is flaunted by media personalities. If your goal is to achieve a defined and muscular body, then you will have to resort to some form of strength training. Most trainers advise in favor of the use of external weights and special machines for strength training. Very few people know that they can actually practice strength training without any external weights as well. Think about it. You own body has a certain amount of mass. You can actually use this to your advantage. This is the whole basis of the bodyweight workout. As is apparent by the name, this technique of strength training involves such poses that allow the person to use his/her weight to increase stress on the desired part. Chances are that you are at least acquainted with some form of bodyweight workouts without being fully aware of it. Sit-Ups and Push-Ups are the most common types of bodyweight workouts that most people have performed at some point in their life. This book is a comprehensive and easy to read guide about the bodyweight workout. If you have been intrigued by the idea but are unsure as to how to approach it, then this book is perfect for you. It offers simple answers to all your complex questions regarding this innovative practice.

Read Ebook The Ice Child: and Other Stories, by Leon Arden

Addressing a consistent set of themes—most revolving around characters who are in conflict with one another based on differences in culture, age, or personality—The Ice Child offers eleven moving short stories by author Leon Arden.

The collection introduces a wide cast of characters and scenarios. A husband and wife, touring Mexico, are confronted while on horseback, by savage bandits; a young man tries to rescue his mother from his father’s obsession, which is filling their apartment with more books than it can hold; a comic drama between two lovers is waged solely through messages left on their answering machines; a son wheels his sick father into a hospital and demands, at gun point, that he be given a heart by-pass; a lovely English woman arrives in New York to find she must share an apartment with a man she has never met; and a failed writer, with two friends, programs a computer to create a salable story, but ominously the PC also predicts their immediate future.

Bookended by stories about youth and old age, The Ice Child presents a unique but highly entertaining collection of tales.

"...Arden...manages to bring each story to life with a creative vibrancy and colourful prose...Savory, memorable morsels of brilliance from a clever wordsmith and a considerable talent to watch."

The stories cover a wide spectrum of themes, settings and moods - and Arden has terrific technical versatility. The opening tale, ‘Coming of Age’, seemed to me a model of its kind and I shall want to return to it again and again. On the surface it’s a travel story: Harvey and his wife Cordelia venture into Mexico on horseback, without their beloved daughter but accompanied by an extraordinary boy. I don’t want to give the story away: what they find in Mexico, in a revelatory moment, is something that sheds retrospective light over the whole journey and on to their family relationships - especially in terms of Harvey’s assumptions about gender. This is the art of short story at its subtle, laconic best.Other stories present an unforgettable child’s-eye-view - and Arden is master of quirky, laugh-out-loud comedy and the ironic, epigrammatic constructions that work so well in short fiction: ‘History don’t change. It’s bad enough as it is’ (‘Coming Attractions’). In several tales, Arden reflects on the culture of narrative itself, in film and literature - with wise irony and sometimes a zany quality of fable (‘Faust Takes A Long Day’s Journey Through the Looking Glass with Madame Bovary’). ‘If Music Be the Food of Love’, taking its wistfully tragicomic tone from Twelfth Night, seems to borrow, in a minor key, the poignancy of Shakespearean humour in its treatment of loneliness and a child’s reaching out to befriend a teacher who proves as mortal as he is eccentric. The title story, ‘The Ice Child’, is a post-apocalyptic adventure into the haunted terrain of speculative fiction, with a spin on Western history and culture, at once bitterly satiric and pensively elegiac.Read The Ice Child: it is a distinguished and lovely collection.

By Lulu 'I've loved all Leon Arden's novels, so having his new book of short stories on my shelf was a godsend when I fell ill recently. 'Thank goodness for The Ice Child' was my inner cry as I wrapped myself in more shawls, shivering feverishly. These stories kept me cheerful and got me through the worst of it, enveloping me in a familiar witty world of delightful and evocative writing. Eleven absorbing stories of infinite variety: my standout favourite is A Pre-existing Condition, a telling satire on the heartless US health system (of a time before Obama's reforms, at least I hope so), but The Book Collector and Craters of the Moon Motel run it a close second, vying with Make My Bed and Light the Light. They highlight characters that ring so true for me, with echoes from my own life and from Leon Arden's recent brilliant novel, The Walk to the Paradise Garden. And yet every single short story in this collection has its own charm and character/s: a writing computer, a tragic musician, a child philanthropist, creatures from afar, unsuspecting tourists, and more. All evoke intriguing reflections on the human condition. Buy and read The Ice Child and wander enthralled through groves of Arden!'

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Laughter and tears By Charles Palliser The stories in this collection are often very funny indeed but they offer something even more than that. There is an unemphatic – what is the right word? wisdom or thoughtfulness – lurking here. The opening story, “Coming of Age”, is an engaging and thought-provoking study of coupledom and childlessness and the unspoken pressures and conflicts of that situation. It’s an impressive account – the more so for its understatedness – and there’s an intriguing surprise at the end. The pieces that follow are perceptive and ironic and full of great one-liners in the incomparable tradition of New York Jewish humor. The final story – “Make My Bed and Light the Light” – is deeply moving and almost magically avoids any trace of sentimentality even though it deals with the end of a very ordinary life but one that is both kindly and tragically under-appreciated. So, laughter and tears. What more could one want from a book?

I read this book mostly for laughs but I was surprised how intricate and informative it actually was. I don't see myself becoming a Ninja anytime in the near future, but for anybody that is, this book is definitely for you.

Tom Sawyer, Detective is an 1896 novel by Mark Twain. It is a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), and Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894). Tom Sawyer attempts to solve a mysterious murder in this burlesque of the immensely popular detective novels of the time. Tom and Huck find themselves with Uncle Silas and his family “Huck Finn” again and much of the drama ends up focusing on Uncle Silas. Like the two preceding novels, the story is told using the first-person narrative voice of Huck Finn.

Tom Sawyer, Detective, by Mark Twain

Review Filled with the folk humor and storytelling charm that have made Tom and Huck so popular for so many decades. -- Audiobook News Service, Spring-Summer 2005

From the Publisher Hesperus Press, as suggested by their Latin motto, Et remotissima prope, is dedicated to bringing near what is far—far both in space and time. Works by illustrious authors, often unjustly neglected or simply little known in the English–speaking world, are made accessible through a completely fresh editorial approach and new translations.

Through these classic works, which feature forewords by leading contemporary authors, the modern reader will be introduced to the greatest writers of Europe and America. An elegantly designed series of genuine rediscoveries.

About the Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "The Great American Novel". Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which provided the setting for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, he worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. In 1865, his humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", was published, based on a story he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention, and was even translated into classic Greek. He is called as "the father of American literature".

23 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Minor Twain but Quite Good By Bill R. Moore Mark Twain's 1876 novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its 1884 follow-up The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are two of American literature's most famous works and the latter one of its most acclaimed. It may thus seem strange that this 1896 sequel - like Tom Sawyer Abroad, its 1894 predecessor - is now almost obscure. The truth is that this is not entirely undeserved. Huck Finn is a masterpiece of world literature, and anyone expecting this to be anywhere near its level will be sorely disappointed. It lacks the more famous work's seriousness and ambitiousness, making it inevitably minor. However, it is quite interesting on its own minor terms; this means it is not great literature or even pretending to be. However, like nearly everything else Twain wrote, it is eminently readable, very entertaining, and sometimes funny. Fans of Twain's lighter work will love it, and there is something for all to appreciate it. The book is notable for taking the series and its characters in surprising new directions, bringing in some rather dark events and making Tom an unlikely detective hero. Though not a great literary work in other respects, it performs surprisingly well in the latter area. Those eager for more adventures from Tom, Huck, and Jim will certainly warm to it. Like the book that bears his name, this is narrated by Huck with all his delightfully provincial grammar and spelling; "prostitution" for "prosecution" in the court scene is my laugh aloud favorite. His naïveté and ignorance also come into play in skillfully unprecedented ways.Like most of Twain, this book can be read and enjoyed on several levels. Most simply and obviously, it is a rollicking, picaresque adventure of the sort later classed as Young Adult or Juvenile. It is notably entertaining and quite humorous even in this limited sense. While far from politically correct by current standards, it can easily be enjoyed by the very young as well as those of all ages who will take it on its own terms. In this sense it is very much like Tom Sawyer Abroad and, indeed, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, not least in returning to the latter's rural South. It also differs significantly from Tom Sawyer Abroad in obvious ways. First and most clearly, as the title shows, it is a detective story of the kind then wildly popular; this was after all when Sherlock Holmes was a sensation. Those who, like me, love such stories can appreciate it simply on this level. It is set up like a typical one with a murder mystery and has exciting elements such as a false confession, a dramatic courtroom scene, a climactic discovery, etc. - and, of course, eventual justice. Seeing all this play out is exciting, and Twain milks it for all it is worth. Unlike most of his works, this is filled with literary devices conventionally used for entertainment value, especially in modern popular fiction: foreshadowing, suspense, dramatic irony, etc. The revelation and ending are in particular highly wrought. Anyone who likes blazing stories of this sort, particularly detective ones, will enjoy and appreciate this and find the book well worth reading for it alone. The discerning can see more, even if no one can see greatness. Though less savagely biting than later work, this is vintage Twain satire in many ways. Detective fiction itself is the target, but Twain's burlesque is gentle; we feel he lightly pokes fun at something he himself enjoys - not least because his satire could be far more bitter. He has some fun at the expense of the genre's conventions, using them in slightly exaggerated fashion to show how superficial they can sometimes be. What may seem exaggeration if read straight comes into play here: melodrama, implausibility, clichés, etc. This is where Huck's naïveté and ignorance are important. Many, perhaps even most, readers will be able to deduce some - or even all - of the ostensibly revelatory events, turning what would normally be suspense into dramatic irony. Those who miss the satire may think of these as defects, but those who see what Twain is doing will know they are intentional knocks at a) provincial Southern ignorance, and b) detective fiction conventions. Even simply moving from popular detective settings - i.e., Victorian England - to Twain's rural South makes the genre seem slightly ridiculous. However, that the book itself it can still be enjoyable with shows that the genre can as well. Indeed, Twain's satire is so subtle that many, perhaps especially detective fiction fans, will not even notice it - with whatever ambiguous result. As for those who dislike the genre, they may well like the book significantly more - indeed, may think it a riot. Twain at any rate did not cut off his satirical take on the genre here, returning several years later with the novella "A Double-Barreled Detective Story," which drops Tom and Huck but actually has Holmes(!) and is significantly more biting.Tom Sawyer, Detective is thus quite a strange book - a light-hearted satire that most will not get and that many will likely enjoy for the very reasons Twain tries to mock. Its canonical status depends on how well one thinks he succeeds here. No one could put it with his great work. It is quite short - about one hundred pages - and can be read quickly and easily. That said, it will certainly delight fans of the associated stories and characters. The story itself is better than Tom Sawyer Abroad, arguably even better than The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; it has more plot than either, and characterization is strong. Conversely, there is significantly less humor, especially in the dialogue, except for those unusually alive to the satire. All told, it is a worthy edition to the series and to Twain generally even if only hard-core fans, especially those who treasure the associated works, should read it in the end. He hardly wrote anything not worth reading, but this should be one of the last stops. It is a pleasant read even if the fact that it has survived more than a century has more to do with Twain's name and his better works than inherent quality. This is surprisingly enjoyable proof that he was ever-readable even when far from this best.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. we enjoyed it By Wayne S. Walker Most people are familiar with Twain's Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, but did you know that there were a couple of other sequels? One was Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894), and the other is this short novel in which Tom Sawyer attempts to solve a mysterious murder, as narrated by Huck Finn. It is a satire of the immensely popular detective novels of the time. Tom's Uncle Silas, a preacher in Arkansas, is doing poorly because a rich neighbor, Brace Dunlap, wants to marry Tom's cousin Benny, and she said no, so Brace is trying to stir up trouble for Silas, who hires Brace's no account brother Jubiter to work for him in an attempt to smooth things out, although Silas and Jubiter are constantly arguing. Aunt Polly sends Tom and Huck on a steamboat down the Mississippi to help cheer Silas and his family up. On the boat, they meet Jake Dunlap, Jubiter's long lost twin brother who had become a criminal and was assumed to have been killed many years before. He and two other men have robbed a diamond store in St. Louis, and he has sneaked off with the diamonds, but the other two men followed him on to the boat, so he is now trying to escape them. His plan is to go home to his brothers and pretend to be a deaf-mute. On the day Tom and Huck arrive, Jubiter Dunlap disappears. He later turns up dead, Uncle Silas is accused of killing him, and there is a trial. Will Tom be able to save his uncle from hanging? We did this as a family read aloud, and everyone enjoyed it. In the "Dover Evergreen Classics" edition, the word "nig*er" is replaced by "Negro." I had to do a little further editing because of some common euphemisms and a few instances of taking the Lord's name in vain. There are also several references to tobacco and smoking. Otherwise, this is a fun book. In 1938, the story was made into a movie directed by Louis King, with Billy Cook as Tom and Donald O'Connor as Huckleberry Finn.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Very good By Michele Schlegel Unlike what might happen with a lesser-known sequel, this tale does not disappoint. Twain's descriptions through the eyes of Huck Finn are rich and believable. The adventure takes twists and is fun to read. I especially enjoyed the boys' perspective and the influence of the supernatural and the macabre on the mystery--as only boys with keen imaginations can bring to an adventure. Also, the story's basis on a true event made it the more entertaining. Just as satisfying as Tom Sawyer or the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, this is a short and pleasant read.

The story of the Borojević family strings and juxtaposes images of the Balkans past and present, but mainly deals with the tragic fates of people who managed to avoid the bombs, but were unable to escape the war. When Vladan Borojević googles the name of his father Nedeljko, a former officer in the Yugoslav People’s Army, supposedly killed in the civil war after the decay of Yugoslavia, he unexpectedly discovers a dark family secret which recollects the events of 1991 when he first heard the military term deployment and his idyllic childhood came to a sudden end.

Yugoslavia, My Fatherland, by Goran Vojnovic

Review "Vojnovic is influenced by American movies, and Yugoslavia, My Fatherland uses cinema’s generic conventions to address the theme of war crimes head-on. . . A gripping narrative that requires no allegorical decipherment, its author employs a noir style to capture the seaminess and stupor of Yugoslavia and traces these early symptoms to the country’s disintegration. In this milieu, national or ethnic identity is a giant Rubik’s cube made of razors." —Times Literary Supplement

About the Author Goran Vojnovic graduated from the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana, where he specialized in film and television directing and screenwriting. The film Good Luck Nedim!, for which he co-wrote the script with Marko Šantic, won the Heart of Sarajevo Award and was nominated for the European Film Academy’s Best Short Film Award in 2006. He has directed three short films himself, and his first feature film, Piran/Pirano, premiered in 2010. Vojnovic's Southern Scum go home! reaped all the major literary awards in Slovenia. A collection of his columns from a Slovene daily newspaper and weekly magazine have also been published as a book under the title When Jimmy Choo meets Fidel Castro.

This book alternates between the present day and the narrator's boyhood, told in flashbacks. The narrator is dismayed to find out that his father that he thought was dead is in fact a war criminal in hiding. In the flashbacks he talks about life with his father until he was eleven in 1991 when he his father was called up by the army. The present day thread is about his efforts to find his father. This book is somewhat depressing and shows that the aftereffects of this war are still present. There were formatting problems, i.e., words frequently had a space in the middle of the word: "Th e" instead of The. In location 1668(no page numbers in this version) at the bottom of the location there are two complete lines transformed into gobbledygook: "Allr ight . A ndw he reh..."So while I do recommend this book, I don't recommend the e-version , until the formatting issue is resolved. The translation was very good

I once heard the saying that you should write what you know about. Ed has done that. The story line is good, the character development is good and the settings are of interest. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys boating in Southwest Florida, the Keys, the Bahamas and points farther south.Nice work Ed, I am looking forward to your next effort!

Another excellent boat ride from Ed Robinson By David Ed Robinson takes you on a scenic, funny, passionate boat ride with a lovable crew of mostly normal but semi troubled characters. You will feel the emotions as the story takes as many turns as the boat itself. Like all of Ed's books, this is a great read and you will not put it down until you are finished.

When I dove into this book, I didn't know what to expect. Within minutes, Robinson ignited memories of places I'd nearly forgotten about. I love reading books about places I know, written by an author that's been there and done that. I've no doubt Robinson and I crossed wakes more than once and probably bumped elbows at Dockside once or twice.Trawler Trash is a first rate novel about living, no make that surviving life afloat as told by someone who has done it. Full of heady descriptions of the southwest coast of Florida, the Keys, the Bahamas, Out Islands, all the way down to the British Virgin Islands, every description spot on. I highly recommend this sea story to anyone from those that have visited El Caribe, to the seasoned waterman.

Sabbath Valley lay like a green jewel cupped in the hand of the surrounding mountains with the morning sun serene upon it picking out the clean smooth streets, the white houses with their green blinds, the maples with their clear cut leaves, the cosy brick school house wide winged and friendly, the vine clad stone church, and the little stone bungalow with low spreading roof that was the parsonage. The word manse had not yet reached the atmosphere. There were no affectations in Sabbath Valley.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Unique By Voracious Reader CITY OF FIRE is a different kind of novel. Much of the story is about Billy Gaston, a boy on the brink of manhood. Billy is basically good, but he gets mixed up with some kidnappers and works hard to make everything come out right.Billy's two favorite people are Marilyn (Lynn) Severn, the minister's daughter, and Mark Carter. They were childhood friends who fell in love, but, when Mark hears someone say he isn't good enough for her, he turns cold to her and goes off to prove them right. Marilyn accepts all this without an explanation and stoically goes on with her life of playing the organ and helping others. I thought this was a weak link in the plot.I found the characters very interesting, even Laurie Shafton, the rich, spoiled, lady's man, who had never been told "no," until Marilyn. The plot had some parts that didn't seem quite believable, like when the doctor at a hospital impulsively left his job and took all day to drive Billy home. I still found the story intereresting. I even thought the archaic slang some reviewers mentioned to be chaming and add to the early 20th century feel of the book. Some of the dialect (I guess it was supposed to be New York state) was a little difficult and didn't ring true to me, but, in the end, I was glad I read the novel.

11 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Archaic but charming with a good message By Spirited As with all Grace Livingston Hill stories, this has a moral, but it took a while to get there. The beginning was slow, and the threads very disparate for a long time. But once the story started rolling it was good. The slang was archaic, which made it hard to follow at times. However, that is part of the interest for me - to see how people in the past used language. Once you accept the language and the Hill formula for the plot (all the good guys live happily ever after), it is entertaining. I enjoyed it. It was worth wading through the beginning.

By Michelle@Book Briefs My ThoughtsLosing the Ice is the second book in the New Adult Ice Series. The Ice series is a contemporary romance series centering around ice skating pairs. You should read the first book, Crossing the Ice, before you read Losing the Ice as they both feature the same couple. Courtney and Josh. Crossing the Ice was one of my favorite books of 2014 so I feel confidant recommending it to fans of contemporary romance and ice skating everywhere. I love Jennifer Comeaux's writing. If you remember the first book, Courtney and Josh each had a different pairs skater so they never really got to skate with one another much.In Losing the Ice they are finally paired up together and I was super excited to see them skating together. And don't worry the skating is every bit as vivid and great as it was in the first book. But the tone of Losing the Ice was much more somber than Crossing the Ice. Something bad happens with Josh pretty early on in the book and I was completely devastated. The remainder of the book centers around this one event and its' consequences. I am really hoping that there is another book in the series and that the next one is a little more happy go lucky. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the way everything panned out in this one, but it felt kind of on the shorter end and kind of sad a lot of the time. And well, I love Courtney and Josh so much that I just want the best for them.I also hope in the next book someone just slaps Josh's mom into behaving properly. That lady really bugs me. Let's focus on the positive things in Losing the Ice. The writing is great, the characters have still completely stolen my heart, and I even grew to like someone that I didn't in the first book, which is always exciting for me. I also admired how solid Courtney and Josh seemed with each other. Their relationship is great, and they are both so supportive. It is admirable. Losing the Ice is a good continuation of the Ice series. I am ready for the next book please!*disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

By Sarah Schneider Losing the Ice jumps right into the action. It's been a few months since the end of Crossing the Ice, and Josh and Courtney are at their first big skating competition as a new pair. Courtney and Josh are an amazing couple, and even though their love and partnership is put to the test, I never once worried it wouldn't work out. Jennifer has created such a strong, loving bond between the two that nothing could break them up.Even dealing with his injury, Josh is still a hunky, swoon inducing lead. Courtney handles everything in stride, including Josh's horrible family, while still being her sassy self! Surprisingly, by the end of the book I was hating Stephanie (Josh's sister) much less. Turns out the witch has a heart after all!My only complaint was that Losing the Ice ended so quickly - I think I read it in one sitting! But no worries because Jennifer has already started on the next book in Josh and Courtney's series!

Ice Series Trilogy — Another Gold for Jennifer Comeaux By IMHO A huge fan of Jennifer Comeaux's first series, the "EDGE" books hooked me on her world of competitive figure skating, with characters and plots so well crafted that they lived on in my mind long after I'd reluctantly read the last page. Her Ice Series Trilogy picks up several years later, continuing Em and Sergei's story, focusing on students we'd met first as young skaters in the EDGE Series, Courtney and Mark, now the senior skaters hoping for their shot at Olympic Gold.I binge-read the three Ice Series books during a recent beach trip...once again the characters captured my heart and the story kept me reading "Just one more chapter" late into several nights.... Each book could be read on its own, but reading them in order within a few days was a treat! Once again Comeaux's world gives an inside view of the sport of competitive figure skating, the sacrifices and dedication of the skaters, parents, and coaches, and the realization that not even those who work hardest are guaranteed the success they seek.Courtney and Josh's relationship develops and grows over the three books. From the initial sparks in Crossing the Ice, through the early conflicting emotions of becoming involved with your competitor in chasing the same prize, I wanted Courtney and Josh to make it. Losing the Ice (book2) takes the couple through a particularly difficult time in their relationship, while adding depth to both characters. The third book, Taking the Ice, (no spoilers!) concludes the trilogy wonderfully, but hopefully this is NOT the last time Courtney and Josh play a role in one (or more) of Comeaux's future books. Yes, this reader is eagerly anticipating future series!Taking the Ice (Ice Series Book 3)
