We have our prejudices in England. Or, if that assertion offends any of my readers, I will modify it: we have had our prejudices in England. We have tortured Jews; we have burnt Catholics and Protestants, to say nothing of a few witches and wizards. We have satirized Puritans, and we have dressed-up Guys. But, after all, I do not think we have been so bad as our Continental friends.

Victorian Sociology By Joanne Marinelli While I heart Gaskell as a Victorian era underdog in a universe of starlets, An Accused Race might be a little too much on the modern reader's patience, as Gaskell is simply engaging in what was then a reformist treatise of her day, decrying the (mostly baffling) oppression of the Cagots in Europe, and while it is nice to be educated about historic social stigma, this is not a narrative that offers much to a lay reader. Gaskell's own bafflement about why the Cagots were so stigmatized doesn't necessarily make for relevant engagement. While it might be useful for the scholar, unless you have sampled all the free downloads and don't care what you're sifting through on screen, this is a skip.

I have never heard of the "Cagots"and their plights which extended for at least a thousand years. It appears these people were just the same as any other human being and they only could be recognized by their family names. Because of superstitions and false information this race was cast as undesirable and for the most part denied basic human rights. Mrs. Gaskill was not going to pass up an opportunity to pick up the gauntlet and again expand her cause as a champion of the underdogs. Very informative and interesting work.

History repeats itself, and people who are not taught to value all life will inevitably come up with a reason to hate, persecute, or exploit some group of people. I think it is important to teach how this happens, so we can recognize it in today's society.

In the early decades of the twenty-first century, Congress unexpectedly passes a law stating that citizens over the age of seventy who can no longer care of themselves are subject to euthanasia by the government. When it is signed by the president, the so-called death law—hidden as a rider on legislation related to defense spending and designed to end a government shutdown—the public is appalled.

Julia Sanchez, a veteran congressional staffer in her late fifties, is determined to fight the new law; her parents, Henry and Beatriz, are in their seventies and are in its crosshairs. Along the way, she joins forces with journalist Jake Jordan, who is vigorous and active in his career despite being in his midsixties. As the two work to counteract the law, they find themselves drawn more and more to each other, and Jake gradually becomes involved with Julia’s parents and their caregiver, Hattie. Can their combined efforts overcome the cruelty of the death law?

In this novel, a congressional aide and an investigative journalist struggle against the terrible threat of a law ordering the death of senior citizens no longer able to care for themselves.

“While readers will be charmed by the beautiful story of love and devotion, both familial and romantic, they will also be challenged by the horrifying idea of a society willing to throw out its elderly.”

—Ann Bernardi, Licensed Clinical Social Worker

This novel certainly does that for me from three different directions. I am a former member of The US House of Representatives, a physician and well past my 70th birthday. I understand the conundrum that lawmakers face with the multi trillion national debt, the increasing numbers of senior citizens who getting even older with the fantastic advance in medical science and the many other areas that are increasing the population of our country. And physicians who find themselves hounded by the government in so many ways to do more with and for less. And the seniors who even now, in so many instances, find it difficult to get medical services for various reasons. If you are a senior you know what I am referring to. The goal of the death law, may in the not too distant future, be achieved by omission rather than by commission. Seniors simply may not be able to find care. The author softens the reality of the death law with a great love story. which also has a surprise ending. The novel is really a great read and I give it five stars.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Intruiging and thought provoking! By John I loved this book. Not only is it a shockingly possible scenario, but it is told within a human drama that gives it emotional anchors and brings it close to home. The characters became very real to me. It takes a powerful idea, but rather than going in a melodramatic direction, it is actually much more realistic. We watch these characters wrestling with how the issues affect their lives and those around them while the politics, in the background, moves as slow as Washington always does. It is an inspirational human drama that threads philosophy and research on aging disguised as fiction, never bogging us down too long in detail and often giving the facts a voice. Having the newly forming and reforming family as the center of gravity for all this is very powerful. This was really a novel of the human spirit, but one with a warning for society that is immediate and palpable. It was a great journey to be part of.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Everyone should read this book and think about it. By Tully This is a novel that every person over sixty needs to read. Their children need to read it too. It explores the consequences of aging for both these generations--aging people and caregivers alike. It would be a great novel for groups discussion and poses the problem of what to do with (or for) those no longer productive in our society. If they cannot care of themselves, is "the death law" a viable solution? Should it be vehemently opposed? Or is there a better way? The serious questions the book poses are lightened by the delightful love story and the possibility of new beginnings--no matter what our age.

The story of a rugby league legend

A gentleman off the field and a brute on it, John Sattler was one of the most feared players of his era. He was equally renowned for his toughness and courage: famously, he played 77 minutes of the 1970 Grand Final with a shattered jaw, leading the Rabbitohs to victory over Manly. Here for the first time he tells his story in his own words and in his own style: honest, uncompromising and direct.

It's the story of a boy from the bush who led the Pride of the League back to its rightful place at the top of the Sydney premiership. Along the way, Sattler toured with the Kangaroos, played in four winning Grand Finals and survived a near-fatal car crash. While he later built a new life for himself as a proud Queenslander, Sattler will always remain a South Sydney legend and an icon of the game.

John Sattler played 195 first-grade matches for the South Sydney Rabbitohs from 1963 to 1972. He captained the club to four Grand Final victories between 1967 and 1971, before finishing his club career with three seasons in the Brisbane Rugby League.

'The story of one of the game's greatest heroes'-Russell Crowe

'If you say South Sydney, you automatically think of Johnny Sattler. He was the iconic, archetypal Rabbitoh warrior.'-Ray Martin

'This book meticulously documents all the big hits, send-offs, major victories and defeats in the footballer's career, igniting rich memories for those old enough to have witnessed those days.'-Weekend Australian

A warts and all, no holds barred, easy to read book which not only the shows the toughness of a legend, but also shows the man behind the footballer. His thoughts and ideas, his love of his friends and family, and his 100% commitment to anything he took on in life. I wish all autobiographies were as good to read as "Glory Glory". A must read!

Basil, by Wilkie Collins

Review "[A] characteristically chilling work by the master of Victorian suspense."

About the Author English novelist and playwright Wilkie Collins was a prolific writer with a body of work comprising thirty novels, over sixty short stories, more than a dozen plays, and a wide range of non-fiction pieces. Collins is best known for his novels The Woman in White, an early sensation novela genre combining shocking gothic horror with everyday domestic settingsand The Moonstone, which is credited as one of the first modern mystery novels. In the 1850s Collins met Charles Dickens and the two struck up a friendship, which lead to Collins becoming a frequent contributor to Dickens s journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Many of his stories have been adapted for film, including Basil, A Terribly Strange Bed, The Moonstone and The Woman in White. Collins died in 1889 at the age of 65.

24 of 24 people found the following review helpful. perhaps the best of Collins's earlier works.. By lazza Wilkie Collins came to fame with 'The Woman in White', followed by a succession of 'suspense' novels which are his trademark. 'Basil' is an earlier yet surprisingly mature work, and it is not a suspense novel. 'Basil' chronicles the life of a young, foolish man who falls in love (literally) at first sight with a young woman. He then discovers, too late, that this 'sweet young thing' is not as she first appeared. The author captures Basil's anguish perfectly. While some people might find the entire story to be a bit contrived, I found the emotional element of writing to greatly outweigh this 'love at first' kitsch. So in conclusion, 'Basil' should have a wider appeal beyond the Wilkie Collins fan club. Folks who love mid-Victorian writing will find much to enjoy with 'Basil'.

By Elizabeth Crowley I have read many novels by Wilkie Collins including: The Woman in White,The Moonstone, No Name and Armadale. Most of these works involve some mystery surrounding a woman. This novel is no exception. The novel begins years after a tragic event has changed the life of a young man named Basil. The readers learn that the doors of his home are forever closed to him. He will never see his father again. And he will never see his beloved sister, Clara, again.Basil begins to recount the events that lead to a life changing event, which caused him to lose all that he once held dear. These events were set in motion the minute he met Margaret Sherwin.Basil's enchantment with the dark and beautiful Margaret happened when they met by chance on an omnibus. Basil was so stricken by her beauty that he followed the beautiful stranger home and with the help of a family servant managed to coax his way into Margaret's life. The Sherwin family were simple shop keepers. Mr Sherwin owned a linen draper's shop. When he learned that the son of a gentlemen with a family name dating back to Norman times expressed interest in his daughter, he was more than happy to encourage the union.Basil's father, however, was extremely proud of his family lineage and expected his sons to follow and respect their family history. Margaret's beauty won over Basil's family obligations. Without the consent of his father he marries Margaret in secret. After marrying Margaret, Basil realizes that something is not quite right in the Sherwin household. Margaret's moods change with the wind. Each and every person in the home seem to be keeping a secret.I found the novel extraordinary! The readers are immediately aware that Basil's marriage to Margaret was his undoing, but the events unfold slowly and tragically.I don't think I will ever hear the names Basil and Margaret and not think of his novel. It was absolutely haunting!

Basil's story was more absorbing than any of the other books and my sympathies were entirely with him. I felt his betrayal and utter dejection. If only I could have been his friend!

There was once a story-book girl named Betty Leicester, who lived in a small square book bound in scarlet and white. I, who know her better than any one else does, and who know my way about Tideshead, the story-book town, as well as she did, and who have not only made many a visit to her Aunt Barbara and Aunt Mary in their charming old country-house, but have even seen the house in London where she spent the winter: I, who confess to loving Betty a good deal, wish to write a little more about her in this Christmas story.

This is a young adult piece about a wellborn American girl spending the holiday in an English castle with her father and friends. As always, Jewett has an eye for description and delineation of characters. A sweet little Christmas plum!

Arthur Conan Doyle was born the third of ten siblings on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was born in England of Irish descent, and his mother, born Mary Foley, was Irish. They were married in 1855. Although he is now referred to as "Conan Doyle", the origin of this compound surname (if that is how he meant it to be understood) is uncertain. His baptism record in the registry of St Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh gives 'Arthur Ignatius Conan' as his Christian name, and simply 'Doyle' as his surname. It also names Michael Conan as his godfather. At the age of nine Conan Doyle was sent to the Roman Catholic Jesuit preparatory school, Hodder Place, Stonyhurst. He then went on to Stonyhurst College, leaving in 1875. From 1876 to 1881 he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. This required that he provide periodic medical assistance in the towns of Aston (now a district of Birmingham) and Sheffield. While studying, Conan Doyle began writing short stories. His first published story appeared in "Chambers's Edinburgh Journal" before he was 20. Following his graduation, he was employed as a ship's doctor on the SS Mayumba during a voyage to the West African coast. He completed his doctorate on the subject of tabes dorsalis in 1885. In 1885 Conan Doyle married Louisa (or Louise) Hawkins, known as "Touie". She suffered from tuberculosis and died on 4 July 1906. The following year he married Jean Elizabeth Leckie, whom he had first met and fallen in love with in 1897. Due to his sense of loyalty he had maintained a purely platonic relationship with Jean while his first wife was alive. Jean died in London on 27 June 1940. Conan Doyle fathered five children. Two with his first wife—Mary Louise (28 January 1889 – 12 June 1976), and Arthur Alleyne Kingsley, known as Kingsley (15 November 1892 – 28 October 1918). With his second wife he had three children—Denis Percy Stewart (17 March 1909 – 9 March 1955), second husband in 1936 of Georgian Princess Nina Mdivani (circa 1910 – 19 February 1987; former sister-in-law of Barbara Hutton); Adrian Malcolm (19 November 1910–3 June 1970) and Jean Lena Annette (21 December 1912–18 November 1997). Conan Doyle was found clutching his chest in the hall of Windlesham, his house in Crowborough, East Sussex, on 7 July 1930. He had died of a heart attack at age 71. His last words were directed toward his wife: "You are wonderful." The epitaph on his gravestone in the churchyard at Minstead in the New Forest, Hampshire, reads: STEEL TRUE BLADE STRAIGHT ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE KNIGHT PATRIOT, PHYSICIAN & MAN OF LETTERS Conan Doyle's house, Undershaw, located in Hindhead, south of London, where he had lived for a decade, had been a hotel and restaurant between 1924 and 2004. It now stands empty while conservationists and Conan Doyle fans fight to preserve it. A statue honours Conan Doyle at Crowborough Cross in Crowborough, where Conan Doyle lived for 23 years. There is also a statue of Sherlock Holmes in Picardy Place, Edinburgh, close to the house where Conan Doyle was born.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great in small doses, after a superb beginning By Robert C. ross The first few paragraphs of Sir Conan Doyles essay, conversation, really, as he readily admits, make splendid reading:"I care not how humble your bookshelf may be, nor how lowly the room which it adorns. Close the door of that room behind you, shut off with it all the cares of the outer world, plunge back into the soothing company of the great dead, and then you are through the magic portal into that fair land whither worry and vexation can follow you no more. You have left all that is vulgar and all that is sordid behind you. There stand your noble, silent comrades, waiting in their ranks. Pass your eye down their files. Choose your man. And then you have but to hold up your hand to him and away you go together into dreamland. Surely there would be something eerie about a line of books were it not that familiarity has deadened our sense of it. Each is a mummified soul embalmed in cere-cloth and natron of leather and printer's ink. Each cover of a true book enfolds the concentrated essence of a man. The personalities of the writers have faded into the thinnest shadows, as their bodies into impalpable dust, yet here are their very spirits at your command."He leads the reader through several shelves of his library, sometimes focusing on a single favorite book, one that allows us to see what a man of action he really was:"Come through the magic door with me, and sit here on the green settee, where you can see the old oak case with its untidy lines of volumes. Smoking is not forbidden. Would you care to hear me talk of them? Well, I ask nothing better, for there is no volume there which is not a dear, personal friend, and what can a man talk of more pleasantly than that? The other books are over yonder, but these are my own favourites -- the ones I care to re-read and to have near my elbow. There is not a tattered cover which does not bring its mellow memories to me. ..."If I had to choose the one book out of all that line from which I have had most pleasure and most profit, I should point to yonder stained copy of Macaulay's "Essays." It seems entwined into my whole life as I look backwards. It was my comrade in my student days, it has been with me on the sweltering Gold Coast, and it formed part of my humble kit when I went a-whaling in the Arctic. Honest Scotch harpooners have addled their brains over it, and you may still see the grease stains where the second engineer grappled with Frederick the Great. Tattered and dirty and worn, no gilt-edged morocco-bound volume could ever take its place for me."Thereafter, as he discusses particular authors, it is best to take each section on its own, thinking about the author, Doyle's analysis, mulling over Doyle's favorite quotations. Otherwise, you may find your eyes glazing over -- especially in some of the sections that seem long ago, far away, remote -- I'm thinking of all the one time pugilists that Doyle seems to have studied, either in person or in the pages of sports writers 75 years before his time. But Doyle can be spot on. His analysis of the great Samuel Johnson is spot on for my money: he praises a large print version of Boswell's Life of Johnson, Volume 1 1709-1765, then skewers the great man himself with great clarity and great kindness (before spending several pages supporting his thesis:"That book interests me--fascinates me -- and yet I wish I could join heartily in that chorus of praise which the kind-hearted old bully has enjoyed. It is difficult to follow his own advice and to "clear one's mind of cant" upon the subject, for when you have been accustomed to look at him through the sympathetic glasses of Macaulay or of Boswell, it is hard to take them off, to rub one's eyes, and to have a good honest stare on one's own account at the man's actual words, deeds, and limitations. If you try it you are left with the oddest mixture of impressions. How could one express it save that this is John Bull taken to literature--the exaggerated John Bull of the caricaturists--with every quality, good or evil, at its highest? Here are the rough crust over a kindly heart, the explosive temper, the arrogance, the insular narrowness, the want of sympathy and insight, the rudeness of perception, the positiveness, the overbearing bluster, the strong deep-seated religious principle, and every other characteristic of the cruder, rougher John Bull who was the great grandfather of the present good-natured Johnnie."Doyle is absolutely brilliant in his analysis of Poe, and one can see through his eyes how Dupin became Sherlock Holmes through Doyle's pen. He glories in the courage and style of the French fighting men, especially those who lost the day at Waterloo -- "a near thing that" -- while mourning the fact that he hasn't found any English writers who come close to their French adversaries in the military literature of the Napoleonic wars. He often complains at how grudging the English are in giving praise, often offering none at all, to their enemies, and even less to their allies -- not a word about the Prussians at Waterloo, for example, or the Spanish or the Portuguese or the Russians on that and other fields. After the brilliant beginning, Doyle begins to slog a bit, but I've found that if I take his book in small bites -- and read some of his favorites -- he has created a very useful and entertaining introduction to the great writers of the 1900s. A small example is this short paragraph about Pepys:"The wonderful thing about Mr. Pepys is that a man should succeed in making himself seem so insignificant when really he must have been a man of considerable character and attainments. Who would guess it who read all these trivial comments, these catalogues of what he had for dinner, these inane domestic confidences--all the more interesting for their inanity! The effect left upon the mind is of some grotesque character in a play, fussy, self-conscious, blustering with women, timid with men, dress-proud, purse-proud, trimming in politics and in religion, a garrulous gossip immersed always in trifles. And yet, though this was the day-by-day man, the year-by-year man was a very different person, a devoted civil servant, an eloquent orator, an excellent writer, a capable musician, and a ripe scholar who accumulated 3000 volumes--a large private library in those days--and had the public spirit to leave them all to his University. You can forgive old Pepys a good deal of his philandering when you remember that he was the only official of the Navy Office who stuck to his post during the worst days of the Plague. He may have been--indeed, he assuredly was--a coward, but the coward who has sense of duty enough to overcome his cowardice is the most truly brave of mankind."On the technical side, the Kindle version worked very well on my iPhone; it is well edited and the small screen encouraged me to read this book in the way I found most enjoyable -- in small bites separated by time and other readings.Robert C. I read the entire thing in 2 approximately 30-minute sittings. If you've ever been in a group where everybody found one person annoying -- or --If you've ever traveled to a 3rd world country and been accosted by a mob of locals indefatigably begging for money or demanding to be your unnecessary "tour guide" --well then, you will probably find this quite humorous! I chuckled my way throughout.I was cheering for the titled "heroine" as she kept up with the men and proclaimed there was no reason why she should be fatigued or couldn't go see whatever they could see. Of course it's a little sad that females used to be looked down for this, but that's history.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Quaint By steve This short story tells of a Cairo and Pyramids that no longer exist. The genteel Damers, the seemingly radical American, the relentless Arabs...the characters are quite comical. And at the center of it all--the single lady traveling by herself. Everyone knows someone like her, and we applaud her rejection! An enjoyable look at the past and an easy read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. time travel By thule222 A short story about a group of Victorian tourists visiting the Pyramids. Miss Dawkins, the unprotected female, is very modern in her manner and outlook and we can see through her how Victorians might have reacted to modern people. It's almost like time travel.

Resistance to Civil Government (Civil Disobedience) is an essay by American transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau that was first published in 1849. In it, Thoreau argues that individuals should not permit governments to overrule or atrophy their consciences, and that they have a duty to avoid allowing such acquiescence to enable the government to make them the agents of injustice. Thoreau was motivated in part by his disgust with slavery and the Mexican–American War.

About the Author Henry David Thoreau was an American author, poet, and philosopher, who is best known for his works Waldena treatise about living in concert with the natural worldand Civil Disobedience, in which he espoused the need to morally resist the actions of an unjust state. Thoreau s work heavily reflects the ideologies of the American transcendentalists, and he has long been considered a leading figure in the movement along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson Alcott, and, at first, Nathaniel Hawthorne (who changed his views later in life). In addition to his writing, which totaled more than twenty volumes, Thoreau was an active abolitionist, and lectured regularly against the Fugitive Slave Law. Thoreau died in 1862, and is buried along with Louisa May Alcott, Ellery Channing, and other notable Americans in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.

Thoreau tells us that unjust laws should be ignored by the just, and imprisonment for right action is no punishment at all. King's words are of a man intimately familiar with the effect of unjust laws, explaining his course of nonviolent action to religious leaders of the time who considered nonviolent protest extreme. Both pieces discuss race issues of their time - slavery and segregation - and those who prefer maintaining the status quo over meaningful change. This is a quick read. I made the purchase because recent events in Ferguson Missouri reminded me that I'd never read "Letter from Birmingham Jail" before. I'm glad that I did. If nothing else, both writings will help me recognize my own tendency to favor the comfortable status quo, and to address that tendency head on.

Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” is the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who through a strangely unorthodox experiment creates a grotesque yet sentient being. Victor, repulsed by the thing that he has created, abandons the monster. The creature in turn saddened by this rejection, departs as well. What follows is a series of tragic events. There is no greater novel in the monster genre than “Frankenstein” and no more well known monster than the one that is at the center of this novel. However, the monster of “Frankenstein” is more than the common lumbering moronic giant that is most often represented. Frankenstein’s monster is in reality a thinking intelligent being who is tormented by a world in which he does not belong. In this depiction Shelley draws upon the universal human themes of creation, the nature of existence, and the need for acceptance. For it is without this acceptance that the true monster, the violent nature of humanity, emerges. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and includes introductions by Sir Walter Scott and Mary Shelley.

Frankenstein, by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

About the Author Mary Shelley (1797-1851), the only daughter of writers William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, and wife of Percy Bysshe Shelley, is the critically acclaimed author of Frankenstein, Valperga, and The Last Man, in addition to many other works. Mary Shelley s writings reflect and were influenced by a number of literary traditions including Gothic and Romantic ideals, and Frankenstein is widely regarded as the first modern work of science fiction. Today s scholarship of Mary Shelley s writings reveal her to be a political radical, as demonstrated though recurring themes of cooperation and sympathy, particularly among women, in her work, which are in direct conflict with the individual Romantic ideals of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Toss in a little natural philosophy (sciences) and you have the making of a monster. Or at least a being that after being spurned for looking ugly becomes ugly. So for revenge the creature decides unless Victor makes another (female this time) creature, that Victor will also suffer the loss of friends and relatives. What is victor to do? Bow to the wishes and needs of his creation? Or challenge it to the death? What would you do?Although the concept of the monster is good, and the conflicts of the story well thought out, Shelly suffers from the writing style of the time. Many people do not finish the book as the language is stilted and verbose for example when was the last time you said, "Little did I then expect the calamity that was in a few moments to overwhelm me and extinguish in horror and despair all fear of ignominy of death."Much of the book seems like travel log filler. More time describing the surroundings of Europe than the reason for traveling or just traveling. Many writers use traveling to reflect time passing or the character growing in stature or knowledge. In this story they just travel a lot. This book is definitely worth plodding through for moviegoers. The record needs to be set strait. First shock is that the creator is named Victor Frankenstein; the creature is just "monster" not Frankenstein. And it is Victor that is backwards which added in him doing the impossible by not knowing any better. The monster is well read in "Sorrows of a Young Werther," "Paradise Lost," and Plutarch's "Lives." The debate (mixed with a few murders) rages on as to whether the monster was doing evil because of his nature or because he was spurned?

King Richard the Second is a history play by William Shakespeare believed to have been written in approximately 1595. It is based on the life of King Richard II of England (ruled 1377–1399) and is the first part of a tetralogy, referred to by some scholars as the Henriad, followed by three plays concerning Richard's successors: Henry IV, Part 1; Henry IV, Part 2; and Henry V. It may not have been written as a stand-alone work.[citation needed] Although the First Folio (1623) edition of Shakespeare's works lists the play as a history play, the earlier Quarto edition of 1597 calls it The tragedie of King Richard the second.

I have two thoughts on this third edition. After going through this edition, from a point of view of the script, I'm not sure I understand the need to update Harold Jenkins's 2d edition. The script itself was easier to navigate in the 2d edition and I thought Jenkins's notes were more helpful. I also disagree with some of what Thompson and Taylor have to say in their editorial notes below the script. That said, I am biased because I used the 2d edition as a sort of "Hamlet Bible" as I directed the piece. Jenkins's notes were extremely insightful and useful. I became very comfortable with it.On the other hand, this third edition has some different insight into the play in performance than does the second edition, as well as information on casting and music that was not included in Jenkins. Obviously there is much written about William Shakespeare in the world, and this 3rd edition of Arden is probably the most up-to-date resource for bibliographic material (as well as some photos of past productions of the play). Jenkins edition is 24 years old, ancient in the scholastic world's "what's new" when it comes to sifting the vast quantity of material written on Shakespeare and Hamlet.Obviously, the needs of the theatrical world for playing Hamlet are different than that of the scholastic world (of which I am currently stuck in both). I think Jenkins is more user-friendly for the theatrician while Thompson & Taylor suit the needs of the scholastic better. My final thought is that a scholar/student of Shakespeare will want to have both the second and third editions for the differences they have to offer.

While they cost a lot more than the standard cheap editions, they have so much more. The Folger editions (probably the most widely available editions of Shakespeare) have footnotes that are quite general and never do they have enough. In addition, they really don't have that much extra information on the play--only a small essay analyzing the modern issues of the play. The Arden editions are truly the scholarly editions of Shakespeare. Ninety percent of the time that I have a question on the text, a footnote provides more information. In addition, a lengthy introduction is included. Everything is documented. While at this point I don't care that much about how the quarto version of Hamlet said "no", when the folio version said "so", it's nice to know that if I have a specific question, the answers in there. My thoughts on Hamlet: Don't fret about understanding the material, just dive in. Shakespeare offers interesting plots to the beginners and vivid prose to pick over to the advanced scholar.

Ackermann I find this very interesting, at least one of the reviewers who gave such a low review not only reviewed this book, but every other book in this Ignatius Critical Series edit by Joseph Peace. In each one, he gives only one star, basially saying the book is a waste of time and money.Something is rotten in the state of Denmark! Why would someone, keep on reading all the books in this series, and then say that reading them is a waste of time? It just does not make sense! Not only that, but the majority of the book is giving nothing but the text of Hamlet. How can any true fan of Shakespeare give that one star. Just the text of Hamlet alone would make it at least 2 stars. So it seems to me that there are some here who have a hidden agenda of not wanting me to read this book - not because of its allegedly poor literary value. So the more they protested, the more I was intrigued. So I got the book, and I am so glad I did! For the first time, Hamlet came alive to me. The footnotes were enough to hep be understand the arachaic phrases, but I was not overwhelmed with them. The editor wanted Shakespear to speak for himself. None of the footnotes tried to persuade you to their interpretations. That was left to the commentaries after you read the Hamlet story. The commentaries were extremely insightful, looking at Hamlet from a Catholic perspective. And why not? Other commentaries look at Hamlet from a modernist or a feminist perspective. Why not from a Catholic perspective? Again, I do not understand these one-star critics. If they were really fans of Shakespeare, they would be happy to see a book like this that would broaden Shakespeare's audience. But it seems they would rather that Hamlet never be read than to read Hamlet from a politically incorrect view.To read why Shakespear was probably a Catholic and was writing from a Catholic persepective, you may want to read The Quest for Shakespeare
