The Fairfields were holding a family conclave. As the Fairfield family consisted of only three members, the meeting was not large but it was highly enthusiastic. The discussion was about Patty; and as a consequence, Patty herself was taking a lively part in it. "But you promised me, last year, papa," she said, "that if I graduated from the Oliphant School with honours, I needn't go to school this year."

Books that were written in a time where there weren't as many of the rules we have today in writing. Sometimes that means the quality isn't great by our standards, but it also means the author shines through more.Patty was a bit more of a showoff in this book, and I didn't like that. Mr. Hapworth (the artist) is a bit creepy thankfully he isn't in much of it.I felt sorry for Kenneth. When will Patty realize that she should accept the attentions of that dear boy? When will she stop being a "little girl?"My favorite part of this story was hearing of Paris of long ago. How The City of Lights had very poor lighting at night at this time. There were many other little details that made this book delightful.I recommend this book for those who love old books and glimpses into the way things were.

Gray As a long-term gym member that has committed to a dedicated routine for quite a few years, I realized that I actually wasn’t going anywhere. I purchased this guide because I like the no nonsense approach that the author seemed to take in the summary. Now, after reading the material, I have to say that I’ve been thoroughly impressed. This a balls to bones, straight up call to action book that dispenses with illusionary gentility and tells you exactly what you need in order to succeed at growing muscle. The author’s authority is obvious and from the beginning you’ll learn that your mind is the most important aspect of a body building program; something most people, including myself, have left out. Once you get your mind in order, then your body can follow; something broken down, structured, and taught with perfect clarity in this manual. From there, we learn about the necessary eating habits and workout routines. Again, you’ll find that this area is simplified and straight up, not filling the pages with unnecessary options and banter that confuses in the long term. From getting your mind together, eating appropriately, setting a 12 month plan, and working out in the right way, there is nothing left out of this guide. Now that I have it in my arsenal, I’m already seeing results and, to me, it’s no question that whoever else get’s this book is going to have the same experience.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I've been working out like this for a while and this is the most ... By Joshua C Solid stuff, no fluff or bulls*** to fill the title up with more pages. I've been working out like this for a while and this is the most efficient way to build muscle. Though I wasn't eating in an efficient way for building muscle I've missed a lot of muscle I could've had. At least now I know how to eat for maximum muscle building efficiency. To anyone that's not so sure their training and eating method is the most efficient and fastest way for building muscle, go for this $3 title, its way cheaper than spending money on supplements and definitely cheaper than a couple hundred dollars for a personal trainer.

Read Ebook The Gambler, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

The Gambler is a short novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky about a young tutor in the employment of a formerly wealthy Russian general. The novella reflects Dostoyevsky's own addiction to roulette, which was in more ways than one the inspiration for the book: Dostoyevsky completed the novella under a strict deadline to pay off gambling debts. The first-person narrative is told from the point of view of Alexei Ivanovich, a tutor working for a Russian family living in a suite at a German hotel. The patriarch of the family, The General, is indebted to the Frenchman Des Grieux and has mortgaged his property in Russia to pay only a small amount of his debt. Upon learning of the illness of his wealthy aunt, "Grandmother", he sends streams of telegrams to Moscow and awaits the news of her demise. His expected inheritance will pay his debts and gain Mademoiselle De Cominges's hand in marriage.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Suspending the Moment By Phyllis Antebi Ph.D Imagine living in an adult world with the emotional patience of a child. Dostoevsky has provided his readers with a first person account of this form of existential existence, with its highs and its lows and its lack of predictability. In particular, this is a story about addiction, a gambling addiction. It's also about the mind numbing effects perpetrated on one's psyche by being obsessed and overrun by a constant feeling of urgency. Thrill seeking and risk taking go hand in hand creating this drama of a group of idle people addicted to pleasure. Pretentious adults living for and in the moment is the backdrop for what Dostoevsky calls, an example of the Westernization of Russian culture. Hard work and persistent effort are to be superseded by idle days and sleepless nights. The fixated and fixating atmosphere is somewhat familiar to any of us who have been to a Casino. The intensity of the atmosphere is based on the suspension of the moment but the relationships are anything but cordial, genuine, or satisfying. Throughout is portrayed the compulsive inability to postpone gratification. 'As if' people playing as if life were merely a game of chance is not a novel theme. Dostoevsky tells us, "One month of such a life is worth your whole existence", an appeal to the sheer intensity of the experience. "What they crave is pure risk"..., pure chance". We desire "not freedom but the thrill itself". This is the story of the pathology of extremism, a quest for infinite time, the suspension of thoughtful self-discipline, even, the suspension of conscience. The consciousness of self and the direct sensation of existence are antithetical. An abnormal intensity is hard to resist where one experiences neither their history, in the form of memories, nor their futures, in terms of long term planning. "Even people who do not pretend are turned into pretenders by others". Gambling takes Alexey out of any concern with morality and into the sphere of amorality, where good and evil do not exist. We see phrases like, "carelessly and contemptuously ...;... horribly abusive; I must have money!; I set no value on my life at all now; she did not regard him as a human being; that some radical and fundamental change would take place in my destiny; it all struck me as so dirty, somehow, morally horrid and dirty". It has become, Alexey asserts, "Horribly repugnant to me to test my thoughts and actions by any moral standard whatever. I was guided by something different". Narcissism abounds as relationships lose any human significance and become simply vehicles for making a bundle or should I say, losing one. "A refinement in her contempt, ... she had to make use of me in some way, as a slave or an errand boy, ... I was her slave and utterly insignificant". If you enjoy the existential qualities of great fiction; if you like the intellectual challenges of penetrating psychological studies; and you have some familiarity with Dostoevsky, the darkness of his characters, their petty concerns, and pathological indignities, this book is a worthwhile read. In conclusion, its true what the existentialists say, we really do know reality by how it feels, especially, morally relevant dimensions of reality. It's also true that the range and depth of one's personality has much to do with that person's capacity to love.

In the beginning of the year 1920 I happened to be living in the Siberian town of Krasnoyarsk, situated on the shores of the River Yenisei, that noble stream which is cradled in the sun-bathed mountains of Mongolia to pour its warming life into the Arctic Ocean and to whose mouth Nansen has twice come to open the shortest road for commerce from Europe to the heart of Asia.

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. F. Ossendowski's Journey Through Mysterious Asia. By New Age of Barbarism _Beasts, Men and Gods_, reprinted by Kessinger Publishing, is Ferdinand Ossendowski's fascinating account of his adventures and travels in northern Asia; Siberia, Mongolia, Tibet, and China, in an effort to flee the Red army of the Russian revolution. Dr. Ossendowski was a scientist and writer who lived for a time in Siberia when the Russian revolution broke out. It came about that he became suspected of being a counter-revolutionary and thus had to flee his home one day into the forests. There he began his adventures as related in this book, where he met up first with a murderer and later with various peasants along the way. Eventually, Ossendowski joined the White forces in Mongolia who opposed the revolution and the Bolsheviki. Much of the book is spent relating the various political events that occur in the "heart of Asia" involving Russia, China, Mongolia, and Tibet, and the relations between these nations. The book becomes interesting however when Ossendowski begins to relate the tales of the Buddhist religion of Mongolia. He encounters many of the Lamas, holy pontiffs, and doctors of this religion and relates tales of the Dalai Lama in Lhasa in Tibet, as well as tales of various fortune tellers, poisoners, and soothsayers. Ossendowski also encounters "the Living Buddha", the King of Mongolia, who has become blind through excessive drinking. The Living Buddha is chosen from among the peasants as the incarnation of the Living Buddha in a child (his soul having passed into another body after the death of the previous Living Buddha) and this child is taken to be reared by the Lamas. The Living Buddha relates a special prophecy for all of Asia, which Ossendowski records. In addition, Ossendowski becomes fascinated with tales of a mysterious subterranean kingdom called Agarthi (similar to the kingdom of Aggartha noted by another writer Saint-Yves d'Alveydre in his _Mission de l'Inde_) which can be reached by passageways from throughout the world. In Aggarthi the King of the World or Brahytma lives along with his two assistants, Mahytma (who knows the purposes of future events), and Mahynga (who rules the causes of these events). From what Ossendowski is able to piece together of this legend, many have travelled to the kingdom of Agarthi, returning with much scientific knowledge. In addition, in 1890 the King of the World appeared in a temple to make a special prophecy regarding Asia and the world in the coming century. There he noted that many events and cataclysms would occur, followed by the emergence of those who dwell in the subterranean kingdom into the upper world. Ossendowski's adventure ends at this point, with him travelling to Peking in China and eventually making his way back out of Asia to Europe again. Ossendowski wonders what will happen when Asia rises up to meet Europe in the coming century. This book which has proven itself to be prophetic has remained popular with esotericists ever since. It remains a fascinating travel adventure which occurs at an historic moment, the coming of the Russian revolution and the rise of the communist state at the beginning of the twentieth century.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A must read travel narrative By Sergey Radchenko Ossendowski offers a healthy combination of facts and fantasy in his absorbing account of adventures and misadventures in Russia and Mongolia. So much has been said and written about Beasts, Men and Gods - what is to be added?First, his worldview: read for a thorough anti-Bolshevik perspective on the Russian revolution;Second, his fascination with Buddhism and the ideas of pan-Asianism, which he shares with Ungern.Thirdly, a keen eye for Asia's promising prospects; in his philosophical discourse Ossendowski warns about the imminent rise of "Asia" as a mighty opponent to Old Europe.Ossendowski's discussion of the life and times of the Mongols is very perceptive; his description of the customs of the people, lamaist religious practices, etc - is very detailed and interesting.Of course, his glorious adventures in Tibet and Mongolia should be taken with a grain of salt, while the whole last part about the underground "King of the World" might interest mystics, though even this part offers a glimpse into the Mongolian society with its remarkable fusion of beliefs and superstitions.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. More adventures than Marco Polo... By Bearcat He writes about his actual adventures trying to stay alive during the Russian Revolution. The things he experienced are incredible, and offer a fantastic first-hand view of Russia and Siberia during those tragic times.

The main route of the Camino de Santiago, Camino Francés leads pilgrims over the Pyrenees. The WAY (Camino de Santiago) winds through the vineyards of Rioja into the lonely stretches of Castile, and the green hills and valleys of Galicia for some 800 km, before reaching Santiago de Compostela and its impressive Cathedral. The versatility of the landscapes, the cultural treasures of the cities along the Way, and the encounters with people from all over the world, make this hike an unforgettable experience. The author Raimund Joos, who walks this and other Ways of St. James for several of months each year, describes the Camino Francés in 140 concise stages, which can be individually arranged to daily stages. Also, interesting detours and the continuing way from Santiago to Finisterre are introduced. For the current published 18th edition, which was published in English for the first time, the descriptions were completely updated and new, improved maps, scaled 1:200.000, were painted. At every stage, overnight stays in refuges are naturally listed, so the pilgrim can easily find a place after a hard day. Information about sights along the Way and important general hints on topics such as "arrival and departure", "equipment", and "language", complete the description of the Way.

The German version of the book has been in existence since 1996 and is highlyrecommended on amazon.de. The information about the refuges is always updated and the tips forpreparing and packing are also a good travel support. The routes can be easily planned individually withits help, and adjusted to one’s daily physical state of being. I'd reviewed the sample available (sent to my Kindle) and was disappointed that it did not contain even a brief sample of how the stage and map info looked. I was then sent a pdf containing a better sample and the book fulfills what I was expecting!! So I will be purchasing it for my second Camino Frances next spring.HERE IS MY ORIGINAL REVIEW: The sample was pretty worthless! (granted it did have a lot of information) It could have shown at least one stage and map just to get an idea of how that information actually looks. Until that happens I won't be ordering the ebook.

Very Helpful By Thomas Reiter I had a few other Camino guide books loaded in my Kindle app, but I found out about this one on the Camino and ultimately stopped using the others. This guide has the best albergue ratings/descriptions and so was very helpful in deciding where to stay each night. Also good descriptions of how to follow the trail (not really necessary) and alternate trails, but not much in the way of history along the trail.Note that the English version of this book is only available in Kindle format, but I read it on the Kindle app on my smartphone without any problems.

It was morning, high and clear as Arizona counts weather, and around the little railroad station were gathered a crowd of curious onlookers; seven Indians, three women from nearby shacks—drawn thither by the sight of the great private car that the night express had left on a side track—the usual number of loungers, a swarm of children, besides the station agent who had come out to watch proceedings.

The Man of the Desert, by Grace Livingston Hill

About the Author Grace Livingston Hill was born on April 16, 1865 to a Presbyterian Minister, Charles and a published author, Marcia, in Wellsville, New York. For her twelfth birthday, Hills Aunt Pansy had one of her stories published in a book of short stories. This was the beginning of Hills career as a writer. In 1886, Hill and her family moved to Winter Park, Florida, where she got a job teaching gymnastics at a local college. She wrote her first real book there, in an effort to raise money for a family vacation to Chautauqua Lake. The book was called Chatauqua Idyl and was published in 1887 by D. Lothrop and Company, the same publisher that printed her first story when she was twelve. Hill was eventually married and began a family, but lost her husband to appendicitis. At this point in her life, her writing was the only means she had to keep food on the table and money in her pockets. In her lifetime, Hill wrote over a hundred books, only two of which were non-fiction. Grace Livingston Hill died in 1947 at the age of 82.

A classic, old fashioned love story By Word Junkie Grace Livingston Hill was born in 1865, and she supported herself and her family during most of her adult life by writing over 100 books. In this story, the heroine Hazel loses her way in the wilds of Arizona in the late 1800s and is found by the embodiment of muscular Christianity, David, who takes care of Hazel on the 40 mile journey back to her father who is a mine owner. I loved this section of the book the most as the two young people come to see themselves in new ways by their interactions with each other.Hazel is a socialite -- rich, beautiful, but with no skills to help her survive in the rugged South West. Both David and Hazel love each other, but sorrowfully part from each other because David is committed to his missionary work and Hazel must return back East with her family.Slowly, Hazel realizes that she wants to be able to be a worthy partner to David, and the rest of the book covers her long process of self-transformation. She catches a brief glimpse of David when he speaks at a religious convention in NYC. Through some twists and turns of fate (or God's will, as these books are touchingly religious without being sappy), the couple finally meet again. Guess what happens!??Hill has her prejudices against superficiality, but she does not show that becoming a person with a higher purpose is an easy process. Her books have a quiet humor about them and some glimpses into the past when phones, cars, and the electronic media had not yet intruded in every aspect of our lives. I like those glimpses and Hill's treatment of the Native Americans in the Southwest -- the cliff dwellers get a small, but important walk-on.Hill is not a writer everyone will like. Her people are divided between those who are decent and those who are selfish. The social classes are pretty well defined. But the writing is lovely and the sentiments conveyed remind us of a time when at least some people considered living the "good" life had more to do with moral choices than with apps.

I love them, and have read each of them 2 to 3 times. I am now getting them one by one for my kindle. That being said, I ordered this book and it had so many typos, errors, incorrect spacing, digital errors, that I asked for a refund on the book and Amazon promptly gave it. The book, in and of itself is a great read, but do not buy this one.. it isn't worth a dime they way it was digitally processed. If not for the poor copy the book would have 5 stars. People ought to check things out before they put them up for sale and waste all our time.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. romance By Chloe This is a very old story. A western romance. One of my favorite of all time. Its also inspirational. Great read if you can find it. Just remember it was written about 1905 or sometime like that.

Wilson If you like mysteries and great enganging writing skills. . . the kind that keep you up way past your bed time and get you into work late. . . this book if for you. I love Aurthur Conan Doyle, but this guy is better. Half way through the book I found myself reading slower because I didn't want it to end!

15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Likable Protagonist, but Average Stories By Gypsi Phillips Bates Martin Hewitt, Investigator is a series of short stories linked by the protagonist, Martin Hewitt, and written down by a good friend, the journalist Brett. The similarities to Doyle's Holmes are striking and most likely intentional. Doyle had killed off Holmes in 1893 and other writers were looking to fill that void.Unlike Holmes, however, Martin Hewitt runs an investigative business, is a very personable gentleman, works well with the police force and easily makes friends. Add to this his ingenious ability for disguise and fluidity in thieves cant and in Mr. Hewitt you have an investigator that is able to blend in anywhere and solve the most intriguing of crimes. In Martin Hewitt, Investigator, Brett gives the details of several of Hewitt's most renowned cases, many of which he was intimately involved with as well. They are tales of impossible to solve crimes that Hewitt was able to crack by piecing together a few clues (a burnt out match, raindrops on a hat, uncapitalized letters in a note) where the police detectives had failed. While the solutions to these various crimes and mysteries do fit together well with the evidence and clues, the reader is not privy to all the information that Hewitt is (as he doesn't share it with Brett). Hewitt then chides Brett (or the police) for not having seen such and such clue and then builds his entire case on that missed bit of information. Morrison uses this ploy to make the solving seem even more spectacular, but this style patronizes the reader and is not a fully satisfying reading experience.----A note on the Kindle edition: There were no errors that I noticed, and the format worked fine on Kindle. Sadly, though, the illustrations aren't available on free editions. There was one story, in particular, that would have benefited by being able to see the floor plan.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not Sherlock Holmes but... By Pianoman88 Martin Hewitt is not Sherlock Holmes, but then again, who is? From what I've read, the character of Martin Hewitt was a contemporary to Holmes, and almost seems to me the "anti-Holmes". However, I did enjoy reading these mysteries very much. I don't think they're any more outdated than the Holmes stories are. But, if you're interested in this book, don't expect it to be like Sherlock Holmes, as Mr. Hewitt is not much like him at all. For example, he's not going to have a client walk into his office and give him his life's history through deduction like Holmes might. The characters don't quite have the personality of the Arthur Conan Doyle characters, and the writing seems simpler, and the mysteries generally simpler. However, I did enjoy reading them very much, and since I think I downloaded this book for free, you can't beat that. I don't think it has an active TOC, but if I remember correctly, very few typos. Anyway, for free you can't complain too much. Mystery lovers, give it a try!

There are many forms of toxic love. One form is the kind where you love someone that can hurt or destroy you. Another kind is what you do to yourself to make the pain go away. These types of pain are written about frequently in dramas, tabloids, and self help books. One type of toxic love is rarely written about. It is a love with someone that is over the Internet. You can't look in the person's eyes. You don't know their character or motives. They will tell you the things you want to hear. They will find out what your passions are. Your interests, dreams, and hopes. They will let you talk about your day. They will seem like your best friend. They make you believe that they will always love you. All you have to do is give your money, bank account information, or resources. They will make it up to you. Sadly, people will do this because they want to believe there are still honest and decent people. They are lonely or want to get rich quickly. The end result is devastating and can lead to bankruptcy, despair, and loss of everything you have worked for. Because the victim “allows” the scammer into their accounts, they have to pick up the pieces. There are many Internet scams out there to get people's money. One of the saddest is where someone is hoping to find love and is deceived online. The scammers' motive is to get money, property, or something else that is valuable to the person they are contacting. What is sad is that most of the victims do this willingly. They are hoping for someone or something better than what they have. This is a story that deals with one of those situations. I hope that you enjoy the story. I also hope that you will learn from our characters what this kind of love can do.

This is undoubtedly the age of humanity—as far, at least, as England is concerned. A man who beats his wife is shocking to us, and a colonel who cannot manage his soldiers without having them beaten is nearly equally so. We are not very fond of hanging; and some of us go so far as to recoil under any circumstances from taking the blood of life. We perform our operations under chloroform; and it has even been suggested that those schoolmasters who insist on adhering in some sort to the doctrines of Solomon should perform their operations in the same guarded manner. If the disgrace be absolutely necessary, let it be inflicted; but not the bodily pain.

The Bertrams, by Anthony Trollope

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. Trollope was employed as a postal surveyor in Ireland when he began to take up writing as a serious pursuit, publishing four novels on Irish subjects during his years there. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. Trollope died in London 1882 at the age of 67.

19 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Vintage Trollope By Cynthia Trollope wrote "The Bertrams" fairly early in his writing career and to me it felt different from his usual fare. Of course there was his theme of boy meets girl, he/they fall in love, boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy eventually wins girl. The emotion seemed more raw though. In "Bertrams" Trollope also threw in some exotic locales such as Jerusalem and Egypt. On the surface this can seem boring but Trollope was always so good at looking under his character's skin to their psychology, their emotions, and motivations. His writing never gets old for me and compared to some of today's harsher literature and even harsher current political/financial/emotional climate reading Trollope feels like a conversation with a trusted friend. He never lets you down.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. the nature and limits of prudence By Harold Kaplan Books by Trollope that are not part of the two series (Palliser, Barsetshire) tend to be neglected. This one deserves far more attention. It is Trollope at his best. The structure is intricate, the characters superb, the pace brisk. the wit and satire sharp . No dry spells, no simpereing Victorian maidens. This has a Balzacian flavour to it; there are a number of characters looking for the main chance. Caroline is one of his most interesting creations. There are three plots which are both parallel and contrasting: George and Caroline, Adela and Arthur, and Sir Lionel's search for a rich heiress. I would say the major theme of the book is the limits of prudence. The scenes in Cairo and Jerusalem add color, an exotic quality, to the story. A delightful read.

11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. ONE OF HIS BEST By LINDA LEVEN THE STORY IS ESSENTIALLY A LOVE STORY -- ABOUT 2 MAIN COUPLES. THERE ARE LOTS OF OTHER PSYCHOLOGICAL SUBPLOTS, ALSO. THE STORY INVOLVES TWO YOUNG MEN WHO ARE EACH IN LOVE, ONE GEORGE BERTRAM AND ONE ARTHUR W. GEORGE DENOUNCES HIS UNCLES MONEY AND WILL NOT BE MOVED TO ANY SORT OF ACTION BY IT -- THUS CAUSING THE WOMAN HE LOVES TO POSTPONE THEIR MARRIAGE. SHE WANTS TO LIVE WELL WITH LOTS OF MONEY. ON THE OTHER HAND, ARTHUR DOES THE SAME, FEELING HE CANNOT MARRY HIS LOVE SINCE HE HAS NO MONEY. THE EFFECT THAT MONEY OR THE LACK THEREOF HAS ON THESE 4 PEOPLE AND THE OTHER CHARACTERS IN THE STORY IS THE CENTRAL THEME. THE BOOK IS SO BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN AND EXAMINES DEEPLY THE PSYCHE OF ALL THE CHARACTERS. I LOVED IT!

Mired in the depths of unethical practices, Waylon University's baseball team struggles to overcome the pitfalls their former coach, Lou Higgins, has laid in efforts to control them, elevate himself, and to seek his own revenge. As a result of an untimely death at his alma mater, Lou positions himself to become a perpetual thorn in the flesh. Gil Sawyer has a better plan; one meant to prosper them, which is implemented by his former teammate and long-time friend, Jay Montgomery; but the players struggle with their own character flaws as Lou tries to exploit them. Though trials abound, Jay tries to keep the young men focused on a goal far greater than a championship. By his calm demeanor and great interpersonal insights, he encourages them to overcome by keeping their Eyes on the Prize. But will they succeed? How far will Lou go to regain past glory? As a lover of baseball and a minister of music, McComsey and May, present a fast paced story, in allegorical fashion, of the fall of Satan and the birth of a nation from which the Church is called, as it is played out on the baseball diamond by fallen men.

By Damian This is a fun feel-good book about great athletes and their love of golf. There are great anecdotes about how they got into the game of golf, and not surprisingly, but unlike you and me, most of them are also great at golf too. How many of them have gotten holes in one is a surprise. Andy Roddick has the best plan for what he would do if, and probably when, he gets a hole in one. Won't spoil it for you. It's a good read.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Great Coffee Table Piece By Julie Curtis The book is designed as "advice and inspiration for the open road". Included are over 300 pages within categories including, but not limited to, "Why We Run", "Why I Don't Run", "Going Barefoot", "Racing" and "The Pain Game". As you can see in the photo, each section is beautifully laid out and easy read or scan. The start of each section is announced with a great full color picture and title page.I mention this book on my personal blog several times, because it really is a great coffee table piece and I find I'm always grabbing it and thumbing through when I need a few quick snippets of exercise fun during my day. Sometimes when commercials are on I'll skim through it and it's also handy for conversation starters or ice breakers within a group. One thing I enjoy is the variety of types of quotes. Some are funny, others are serious, some short others lengthy. It isn't the same thing over and over, it really is a quality collection.

William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard"). His surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language, and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. Scholars believe that he died on his fifty-second birthday, coinciding with St George’s Day. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway, who bore him three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592 he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of the playing company the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1590 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. Next he wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest examples in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of his plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime, and in 1623, two of his former theatrical colleagues published the First Folio, a collected edition of his dramatic works that included all but two of the plays now recognised as Shakespeare's. Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the nineteenth century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare's genius, and the Victorians hero-worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called "bardolatry". In the twentieth century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly popular today and are consistently performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world. According to historians, Shakespeare wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets throughout the span of his life. Shakespeare's writing average was 1.5 plays a year since he first started writing in 1589. There have been plays and sonnets attributed to Shakespeare that were not authentically written by the great master of language and literature.

From the Inside Flap This wisely funny comedy, which contains some of Shakespeare's loveliest poetry, contrasts a court's world of envy and rivalry with a forest's world of compassion and harmony. In the Forest of Arden, the banished young heroine, Rosalind, disguised as a gentleman farmer, encounters an extraordinary assemblage of characters, including a fool, a malcontent traveler, her own banished father, and the banished young man she loves. Romantic happiness triumphs, even as we laugh at the excesses of love, at the ways of court and countryside, indeed, at everything, in this masterpiece of comic writing. Each Edition Includes: - Comprehensive explanatory notes - Vivid introductions and the most up-to-date scholarship - Clear, modernized spelling and punctuation, enabling contemporary readers to understand the Elizabethan English- Completely updated, detailed bibliographies and performance histories - An interpretive essay on film adaptations of the play, along with an extensive filmography

I liked "As You Like It" - it made for a good comedy and a good introduction for someone to Shakespeare. The Kindle version is pretty much flawless - it's copied from a good source and doesn't have any glaring transcription errors as some free e-books do.If you want a good introduction to Shakespeare, or even just want to branch out from his dramatic plays - give it a try. It's a free book - what can go wrong?

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. crazy romantic comedy By Nancyhua The plot involves a lot of people disguising themselves as the opposite gender but in the end everyone ends up with the one they really love. In that sense it's like a light romantic comedy but it also includes a lot of the great writing that Shakespeare is known for, including many of his most famous lines, such as the "all the world's a stage" monologue, and I hadn't realized this is the play the phrase "motley fool" came from. If you like Shakespeare, this is a must read, and it's entertaining as just a fun play. This kindle version is well formatted, though no footnotes or line numbers.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The Many Appealing Facets of Shakespeare's Talent! By Donald Mitchell As You Like It has many qualities to attract readers and audiences. Rosalind is one of the great heroines of all romantic literature. The play has more outstanding speeches than almost any other that has ever been written. Astonishing plot complications are quickly resolved in the simplest possible way, reflecting a playwright's tour de force. The Forest of Arden appears as a character in creating a magical atmosphere whereby all perceptions change, and all are healed. Right wins out, especially in drawing on good character . . . even from formerly badly behaving people. And for those who love marriages, this book has one of the most impressive ceremonies of all time in literature. Humans have never looked nobler in the end than in this play. Yet the play also abounds with some of the greatest lines of Shakespeare's fools that cause all of us to see that humility is more called for than pride or ambition. Certainly, As You Like It will make you feel the presence of an unmatched genius, that should inspire even the most arrogant to feel humbled in the Bard's presence. My recommendation is that you first see a performance (whether in person, or on a recording). If that's not possible, try for an audio. Many outstanding actors have been taped. After you have the sights and sounds of the play firmly in mind, then read the play. You'll find that your earlier experiences will unlock more of the play's depths, imagery and pleasures for you.Where in life is being true to your word very important? How can you improve your life by being more reliable in this way?
