This Newly Revised 2nd Edition has been edited to describe and define the role of the rear elbow in creating effective bat lag and bat extension, as well as to include a new drill for developing this important hitting mechanic. Baseball enthusiasts who enjoy reading and talking about the skills of the game as much as I do, and especially hitting, will find this brief discussion on the concept of bat lag most enlightening and entertaining. The book as a resource defines bat lag, explains the concept and how it contributes to the development of barrel awareness, and provides a detailed drill for developing mastery of this important component to hitting success. In addition, there is detailed discussion about hip pre-set, the stride, and other key elements of the hitting mechanics. A must read for any baseball player who aspires to the highest levels of the game. While I myself did not rise to the professional level for my own tools and skills, I was able to stretch out my "career" to have the opportunity to take advantage of so many situations as to build a baseball intelligence, as it were, for which I am very grateful. I have had the chance to design and direct baseball schools owned and operated by two MLB managers, one for the New York Mets and one for the New York Yankees. During that time, I worked directly with one of the most respected pitching gurus in professional baseball, a gentleman who served both as the Director of Pitching Development of the Oakland Athletics and the AAA pitching coach for the Yankees, and one of the most respected catching instructors in the country. I also directed hitting clinics alongside a prior GM for the Kansas City Royals. In addition, I have spent different periods in the baseball academies in the Dominican Republic, learning from and competing against the coaching staffs of the Cubs, Twins, Diamond Backs, Phillies, Mariners, and Astros. It is a perspective on baseball that is absolutely invaluable. In my experience as an instructor and clinician, I have worked alongside a current scout for the Royals, who also pitched for the Detroit Tigers and the Yankees, another pitching instructor who was an All-Star for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and multiple others, including those who played with the Reds, Expos, Rangers, and Phillies. I also served as the head coach of teams which produced a current pitcher for the New York Mets, another for the Toronto Blue Jays, a player who spent more than 10 years, most with the Atlanta Braves, and others who played with the Phillies, Mariners, Dodgers, Indians, and many who made it as far as the various independent organizations. And while I take no credit for the accomplishments of any of the individuals with whom I've been associated, I have learned an awful lot about baseball, the value of which I have had the opportunity to develop and grow through the thousands of lessons and sessions I have delivered. Now you too can benefit from all that I have experienced and learned.

Antonia Amorsolo Fasting intermittently when combined with a quality detoxification program and high intensity bursts of exercise are the things to do to get the metabolism going for maximum weight loss. Jake Murray presents a balanced view of the different intermittent fasting options that are available and most of what you need to know is explained here. Over the years, I've tested some of these things myself and they worked for me. I used to control my food intake by having less for breakfast and lunch, and skipping dinner. This is one of the things that I agree with in this book: finding the time that fits in skipping meals because it varies from person to person; moreover, the meals eaten should be healthy. The only other thing to do is to consult with your medical providers while implementing this program. In addition, work with a good physical therapist and even a nutritionist.

A good way to lose weight By Darla Rossetta I heard that intermittent fasting is one of the simplest strategies that can help you lose fat, gain muscle and live healthy. So I got this book to know more about it. With much satisfaction I think it’s worth the try. However it needs a whole deal of self control in order to achieve what your goals are in doing intermittent fasting.

It is literally 10 pages long and really only tells you about other people's fasting plans. Save yourself the trip and just purchase a real book on the subject. It is not the money as I only purchased the kindle addition...but to call ten pages s book is a bit misleading. Also, the ten reviews before mine must all be friends and family members to have written such rave reviews.

Anyone can become an Urban Birder. You can do it anywhere and any time, whether you've got the day to spare, on your way to work, during your lunch break or just looking out of a window. Look up and you will see.The book is an inspirational look at the birdlife in our cities, or more accurately, the author's personal journey of discovery involving encounters with racism, air rifle-toting youths, girls, alcohol, music, finding urban wildlife oases and of course, birds.David Lindo's story is entertaining and sometimes controversial, but the one guarantee is that the reader will be left feeling inspired enough to pick up a pair of binoculars and head to the nearest park.

The Urban Birder By Clare O'Beara While I had not heard of the Urban Birder before linking with him on a social site, the title stuck easily so as soon as I saw this book I picked it up to buy.London where David Lindo grew up is a vast sprawl of city and among its gardens, parks, reservoirs, derelict sites and wild spaces, innumerable bird species are to be found. Some are resident for all or part of the year while many other species migrate across Britain and use London as part of the route. Any keen bird watcher may see something unexpected, or a usual bird behaving in an unexpected way, is the message from this devoted fan of birds. We get the often amusing story of Lindo's early and incongruous obsession with feathered friends, growing up in a Jamaican family in dense housing. Despite being scared off birds in his personal space by Hitchcock's 'The Birds' on TV while a child, he loved watching them through his prized binoculars bought on hire-purchase and made his own notes. Soon he developed a life-list and area-list hobby which increased his drive to see more and better habitats. While Lindo has been fortunate enough to work in various places around the world, he has pursued his ornithology to, presumably, the exclusion of some socialising. Bird watching comes across as a mostly male pursuit in salt marshes at dawn and not all those men could be bothered chatting to a black kid who had memorised books. I grinned when Lindo described spotting rarities because the large group of twitchers (those who pursue a spotting of a rare bird) he'd just split from was scaring off the bird, or the garrulous men were too busy chatting on a boat trip to spot an unusual gull in the mix. He does mention his interest in music and clubs but we don't get an account of a more personal life.I liked the account of the different habitats to be found in the big city, and the bird diversity available. However there is little on the other biodiversity, and for me all the species found in a habitat are interlinked. Lindo surprised himself by finding an entire ecosystem under a log while guiding a walk for children, right up to newts!I would also have liked to see some advice on luring birds to your garden, other than the biscuit crumbs the junior enthusiast used, or at least a recommendation of which book to buy or website to read to get this information. For this reason I recommend teaming this book with "Welcome to Subirdia: Sharing Our Neighborhoods with Wrens, Robins, Woodpeckers, and Other Wildlife" by John M. Marzluff, Jack Delap.Overall this is an amiable memoir from a guy who clearly enjoys his life and wants to spread his message of looking up and being inspired by birds of all kinds.

Absolutely loved his book. He comes across to be very passionate about birding and passing on the wonder of birds to the younger generation especially children who have grown up in cities. Would definitely recommend this book to any person who is even slightly interested in birds. You will be hooked on birds after reading this book

By Marc Arndt I only knew of the David Lindo, "The Urban Birder," through Twitter, but he seemed to be having some interesting birding adventures. When I found out he had a book out, I was curious to read about birding from a modern-British perspective, and being a semi-urban birder myself, wanted to see Mr. Lindo's take. His story is far different than most birders' and I'm sure it wasn't easy to persevere in a pastime as starchy as birding for an urban child of immigrants in the sprawl of London. If you feel you're not the typical birder or a lone birder amongst a world of non-birders, or just a curious birder, this book makes for an interesting read. Turns out, for the non-Brits, that Mr. Lindo is a TV "presenter" and there are a lot of interesting YouTube videos of him trying to take birding to the British public.

Has the age of miracle quite gone by, or is it still possible to the Voice of Faith calling aloud upon the earth to wring from the dumb heavens an audible answer to its prayer? Does the promise uttered by the Master of mankind upon the eve of the end—"Whoso that believeth in Me, the works that I do he shall do also . . . and whatsoever ye shall ask in My name, that will I do;"—still hold good to such as do ask and do believe? Let those who care to study the history of the Rev. Thomas Owen, and of that strange man who carried on and completed his work, answer this question according to their judgment.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Typical Haggard (good) but with some dated material By Gagewyn The plot to The Wizard concerns a clergy man, Owen. He hears a story of missionaries to an African tribe. After preaching the tribe reasoned that if servants of God in the bible could do miracles then those particular missionaries should be able to do miracles. They executed a criminal and asked the missionaries to revive the corpse. The missionaries couldn't and so one was executed for telling lies (either about God or about his relationship to God) and the other was sent back to seek a true follower of God.So Owen sets off to Africa in the hope that God will work miracles and show the tribe the truth. Meanwhile the old king in Africa is getting old and there are many politics involving the following: the king's two sons, the wizards or traditional spiritual leaders and Noma, everyone wants her, she wants power, she is married to the head wizard. Owen shakes things up by continually being commanded to do certain miracles. As members of the tribe convert those in power become concerned about the effect Owen is having on their personal situations. The writing and mix of action is typical for Haggard. It has the desirable powerful woman in the form of Noma. The exotic landscape and political intrigue worked well. I liked this book except for...Since the plot concerns a missionary, there is a bit of religious reference here. It seems that Haggard was just a tad confused about church doctrine, which never helps. Owen struggles to deal with converts who already have multiple wives fitting into a monogamous religion. He comes to the "compromise" that if they are already married its OK, but after they convert they can't marry again if they are already married. News flash: that isn't a compromise. That allowance was made for converts to the early Christian church. So the religion thing is just tacked on and is based on stereotypes of Christianity. It makes the book seem quaint at times and is probably the reason this book hasn't been reprinted recently. If you are a big fan of Haggard or of victorian literature then you probably really like this. If you aren't either of those things then don't bother. This is a good book, but some of the themes it deals with are a bit dated. The more timeless themes are present in other works by Haggard, so try one of those instead. She and Cleopatra are both good, as are others.A note to scholars: Haggard frequently gets knocked for being racist. In this book it seems that he is actually presenting a very unracist message and trying to make people think. For example, one of the Africans asks Owen if it is true that all Europeans are cannibals. There are other places where the stereotypes seem to be intentionally reversed, maybe to make people consider their own ideas.

Grubbs While this book has adventure and the exotic mysteries of Africa, it also has a beautiful message that the reader can not walk away from and not be affected by. Much like Mr. Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe", "The Wizard" is a beautiful story of redemption, forgiveness, humility, and the greatest love of all. Mr. Haggard's finest work.

Rider Haggard’s The Wizard- Kindle edition. This is a novel presenting timeless themes of faith, redemption, civil conflict, and betrayal. Set in the lost world of central Africa in the 1890’s, we encounter the Children of Fire and their fatefull visit from “ Messenger”, a missionary named Thomas Owen. Tribal mysticism and culture clash with Victorian era values of Christianity , with some intrigue, adventure and epic battles thrown in for good measure. The story kept me interested. Give this one a try…Rating B-

It had occurred to her early that in her position—that of a young person spending, in framed and wired confinement, the life of a guinea-pig or a magpie—she should know a great many persons without their recognising the acquaintance. That made it an emotion the more lively—though singularly rare and always, even then, with opportunity still very much smothered—to see any one come in whom she knew outside, as she called it, any one who could add anything to the meanness of her function.

By haley I was required to read this book for my American Lit class in college, and though I had heard that James was a bit verbose and that the plot of the novel was purportedly about the life of a telegraph-girl, I nevertheless enjoyed it thoroughly. The novel centers on a young girl who works at the sounding board of an English store. Because she is the main operator, she is privy to all of the customer's private affairs, for she transcribes all of their personal notes. Some of her insights regarding relationships and the often-intimate details of her state of mind seemed to articulate some of my own thoughts. The "hook" of the plot(as concern other female-heroines of her time) revolves around her intense fatuation with a male customer, with whom she eventually falls in love. "In the Cage" is taut, well-written, and eerily similar to the trials and tribulations of everyday life in the present era.

You were there By Retired The unnamed main character of Henry James’ 1898 novella In the Cage is a postal clerk who reads the telegrams upper class residents send to each other – making dinner appointments, coordinating vacation schedules, arranging trysts – and has decided that one of them, the Captain – who has manners, speaks well, dresses to the nines – is simply the most attractive man she has ever seen. And, (shades of a Woody Allen movie) in spite of being engaged to one Mr. Mudge, she lets her feelings run rampant. She begins to walk out of her way going home to pass by the apartment building of Captain Everard on the chance that they might meet.Meanwhile, she learns more of the life of the beautiful people from her newly rekindled friendship with Mrs. Jordan the widow of a bishop, and in her youth the neighbor who shared the poverty that she, her sister and mother lived in. Now, with her booming business – taking care of the flowers in the apartments of the well to do – Mrs. Jordan is able to fill in some of the picture the heroine desperately wants to be part of, even offering her a job – which she declines. Then, on one of her evening walks home she miraculously does meet the Captain. This chance encounter allows them to converse outside the formal confines of the postal substation in the tonier part of London that she works in – and at the end of their conversation she tells him that she would do anything (in the sense of “take a bullet”) for him.The highpoint of her life – far exceeding the proposal of marriage that she gets from Mr. Mudge while on a week’s vacation in the autumn of the year – is the appearance of the Captain at the postal substation who asks her to retrieve a telegram he sent sometime in August. With a feeling of complete control over the fate of the Captain, she is able to tell him the content he is so interested in.Later, Mrs. Jordan tells her about the Captain who, it turns out, has been blackmailed, apparently, into marrying one of his consorts whose husband has just died; and, most likely hers and the Captain’s paths will never cross again. She now accepts her fate – a life of marriage to the dependable and devoted Mr. Mudge. In the Cage illustrates clearly why James is called the novelist of the psychological. He draws with superb detail:The infatuation the heroine has for an essential stranger.Perhaps you remember sitting on your bicycle parked in front of the house of the schoolgirl you thought was perfection but who never acknowledged your existence (except years later when she offers you a ride home from church in her brand new Chevrolet Impala – and you don’t ask her for coffee – some chances really only do come once in a lifetime). The superiority she feels toward her fiancé, her friend and her coworkers.Everyone knows the feeling of intellectual – even moral – superiority to the guy standing in front of you on line to the theater who strikes up a conversation with you and you immediately realize that this person is not someone who has been or ever will be part of your world. The envy she has of the upper class people who patronize the postal substation.Who hasn’t wished they were walking into their office, with a handful of messages and a sign on the door that says: “See my secretary for an appointment.”Her control when she is able to repeat from memory the message that Captain Everard needs to retrieve.Who has not felt the power knowing you have what someone wants – a word, a key, a nod, a gesture pointing them to the service others must still wait for; or, the relief whensomeone solves your problem, like the cook’s pass to pay for your breakfast tomorrow because you forgot your wallet today when he says: “I know you – you’re in here all the time.” And, you thought he never even saw you let alone remembered you.The ennui when Mrs. Jordan reveals the Captain’s true story.Who has not been punched in the gut of learning the truth about someone that is not the truth you had constructed in your mind – maybe a growing relationship that is suddenly cut off, leaving you with no address, no missive, no nothing – literally falling off the face of the earth (and you thought she liked you, wanted you, enjoyed your company but, in fact, you were probably just a diversion). The impression you get as you read some of the longest sentences you will ever read is that to take out even a single word would somehow detract from the whole which is indeed great. It is James’ perfect sense of the human condition that makes the story so appealing. In the Cage is nothing more or less than a perfect mirror.Look at it and smile.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born the third of ten siblings on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was born in England of Irish descent, and his mother, born Mary Foley, was Irish. They were married in 1855. Although he is now referred to as "Conan Doyle", the origin of this compound surname (if that is how he meant it to be understood) is uncertain. His baptism record in the registry of St Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh gives 'Arthur Ignatius Conan' as his Christian name, and simply 'Doyle' as his surname. It also names Michael Conan as his godfather. At the age of nine Conan Doyle was sent to the Roman Catholic Jesuit preparatory school, Hodder Place, Stonyhurst. He then went on to Stonyhurst College, leaving in Arthur Conan Doyle was born the third of ten siblings on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He then went on to Stonyhurst College, leaving in 1875. From 1876 to 1881 he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. This required that he provide periodic medical assistance in the towns of Aston (now a district of Birmingham) and Sheffield. While studying, Conan Doyle began writing short stories. His first published story appeared in "Chambers's Edinburgh Journal" before he was 20. Following his graduation, he was employed as a ship's doctor on the SS Mayumba during a voyage to the West African coast. He completed his doctorate on the subject of tabes dorsalis in 1885. In 1885 Conan Doyle married Louisa (or Louise) Hawkins, known as "Touie". She suffered from tuberculosis and died on 4 July 1906. The following year he married Jean Elizabeth Leckie, whom he had first met and fallen in love with in 1897. Due to his sense of loyalty he had maintained a purely platonic relationship with Jean while his first wife was alive. Jean died in London on 27 June 1940. Conan Doyle fathered five children. Two with his first wife—Mary Louise (28 January 1889 – 12 June 1976), and Arthur Alleyne Kingsley, known as Kingsley (15 November 1892 – 28 October 1918). With his second wife he had three children—Denis Percy Stewart (17 March 1909 – 9 March 1955), second husband in 1936 of Georgian Princess Nina Mdivani (circa 1910 – 19 February 1987; former sister-in-law of Barbara Hutton); Adrian Malcolm (19 November 1910–3 June 1970) and Jean Lena Annette (21 December 1912–18 November 1997). Conan Doyle was found clutching his chest in the hall of Windlesham, his house in Crowborough, East Sussex, on 7 July 1930. He had died of a heart attack at age 71. His last words were directed toward his wife: "You are wonderful." The epitaph on his gravestone in the churchyard at Minstead in the New Forest, Hampshire, reads: STEEL TRUE BLADE STRAIGHT ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE KNIGHT PATRIOT, PHYSICIAN & MAN OF LETTERS Conan Doyle's house, Undershaw, located in Hindhead, south of London, where he had lived for a decade, had been a hotel and restaurant between 1924 and 2004. It now stands empty while conservationists and Conan Doyle fans fight to preserve it. A statue honours Conan Doyle at Crowborough Cross in Crowborough, where Conan Doyle lived for 23 years. There is also a statue of Sherlock Holmes in Picardy Place, Edinburgh, close to the house where Conan Doyle was born.

the mystery of cloomber, by Arthur Conan Doyle

About the Author The creator of Sherlock Holmes, the world's most famous literary detective. Born in Scotland, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a practising doctor when he began to write tales of mystery and adventure. In addition to the Sherlock Holmes stories, Conan Doyle also wrote the Professor Challenger adventures, and his classic, The Lost World, is one of the original fantasy novels. Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Edinburgh and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh's Medical School. Graduating in 1881, he set up practice as an occultist, but as patients proved elusive he turned to writing. An important influence upon his literary career was his professor, Dr Joseph Bell, who could observe the most minute detail regarding a patient's condition. This master of deduction became the model for Conan Doyle's legendary literary creation, the detective Sherlock Holmes, introduced in 'A Study in Scarlet' in 1887. Conan Doyle also espoused spiritualism and devoted considerable time and effort to a campaign of support for this cause. He also wrote successfully in genres other than detective fiction. His non-fiction includes military writing on the Boer War and pamphlets on spiritualism. It is known that he felt constricted at times by the popularity of Holmes, but it is nevertheless for Sherlock Holmes and his foil, the ponderous Dr Watson that he is best remembered. As Sherlock Holmes was the first detective to solve cases by deduction rather than due to an error by the criminal, Conan Doyle can be credited with creating the modern detective novel. He was knighted in 1902 for his support of the British cause in the Boer Wars. After the death of his son in the First World War, he devoted the rest of his life to spiritualism on which he wrote and lectured.

DURING the last two years Fate, Chance, and Destiny had been too busy to attend to Mike Clinch. But now his turn was coming in the Eternal Sequence of things. The stars in their courses indicated the beginning of the undoing of Mike Clinch. From Esthonia a refugee Countess wrote to James Darragh in New York: "—After two years we have discovered that it was José Quintana's band of international thieves that robbed Ricca. Quintana has disappeared. "A Levantine diamond broker in New York, named Emanuel Sard, may be in communication with him.

The Flaming Jewel, by Robert W. Chambers

About the Author Robert William Chambers was an American author who is best known for his Art Nouveau short-story collection, The King in Yellow, considered to be one of the most important examples of American supernatural fiction. Chambers was a prolific writer, and although he continued to write within the weird genre, publishing The Maker of Moon, The Mystery of Choice, and The Tree of Heaven, none of his subsequent efforts achieved the success of The King in Yellow. Chambers early works greatly influenced the work of H.P. Lovecraft and other horror writers, as well as the 2014 HBO television show True Detective. Robert Chambers died in 1933 at the age of 68.

By frumiousb I read this book as part of my personal project of reading books from my paternal grandfather's library.Robert W. Chambers was a prolific and successful fantastic fiction writer who worked between 1894 and his death in 1933. He is most likely best known for his early horror/weird short fiction, but he wrote scores of books in a wide variety of genres. The Flaming Jewel (1922) is a mystery/thriller with a G-Man detective angle. It pits an international gang of jewel thieves against a group of American rum-running poachers. It takes a loyal ex-army man-- Jim Darragh-- who has to sort the whole mess out. At stake for him are some famous and elusive jewels that once belonged to Her Serene Highness Theodorica, Grand Duchess of Esthonia. Darragh has a personal interest in the happiness of Theodorica and means to retrieve her treasure-- the only thing left of her fortune after the anguish of war.Compared to other similar books from the same period, The Flaming Jewel stood out for its relative length and complexity. Although the writing is uneven (at the rate which Chambers wrote, it nearly had to be uneven) there are some interesting plot twists and turns. (Those plot twists include one of the most original gruesome deaths for a villain that I have ever encountered.) He also has some nice thematic touches going on-- the post-WWI malaise, a US infected by the consequences of war, the contrast between imported and domestic villainy. It's nice to see that several companies are bringing Chambers back into print. These may be largely interesting as a product of their time, but seem to me still worth the effort to read. (I might have really given it three stars, but it seems to me worth four for the historic value.)

Only about 15 years after the event, Balzac has presented the despairing and disordered retreat of Napoleon's army from Russia in his story; the reader is spared little--soldiers so focused on their most basic needs and urges that they cut up and roast an officer's horse instead of continuing across the bridge on the Berezina. When the bridge is blown up, the French stragglers find themselves trapped on the wrong side of the river with the Russian army coming up. In this every-man-for-himself situation, a young officer tries to rescue his beautiful and beloved mistress. When they are separated, the woman (Stephanie), though she makes it to the other side, loses her mind. Unbelievably enough, Stephanie and her officer meet again several years later--though she is no longer capable of recognizing her lover... To say more would be to spoil the effect of a remarkable story.

In one of the nicest nurseries in the world there were beds for three young people called John Napoleon, and Wendy Moira Angela, and Michael, the children of Mr. and Mrs. Darling. The nursery was wide and airy, with a large window, and a bright fire with a high fire-guard round it, and a big clock, and prettily-coloured nursery-rhyme pictures over the walls. It was in many ways a most interesting household. For one thing, although there was a pretty little parlour-maid called Liza, the children were bathed and dressed by a big dog called Nana, whose kennel was kept in the nursery.

The Poetry of Arab Women: A Contemporary Anthology, by Nathalie Handal

From Publishers Weekly "The anthology was prepared to eradicate invisibility," writes Nathalie Handal (The Never Field) of Poetry of Arab Women: A Contemporary Anthology. With research help from groups like RAWI (Radius of Arab-American Writers, Inc.) and from Arab-American newspapers and journals like Al Jadid, Handal has gathered work from "most of the older and newer contemporary voices" of the Arab diaspora over 80 poets writing in Arabic, French, English and other languages, and living in Syria, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Yemen, Gaza and the U.S. Handal's introduction, along with biographical notes on the poets and many translators, helps to place them.

From Booklist The Arab world's poetic tradition predates Islam, but it was through the social revolution of Islam that it became possible to be a poet, an Arab, and a woman. Ancient Arab women are sometimes anthologized, but contemporary poets don't get the attention that they deserve and that this ambitious volume begins to give them. These poems were garnered from throughout the world and translated from Arabic, French, and other languages by many hands. Some of the featured poets have lived their whole lives outside the Arab world, and although many rely on Arab poetic traditions and forms, the "Arabness" of others is subtler. The book's contents vary in quality, for established poets like Naomi Shihab Nye are juxtaposed with little-known American graduate students. Yet out of a cacophony of voices, styles, and visions, deeper understanding of what it means to be an Arab and a poet can be obtained. Although it can be criticized for favoring breadth over depth, this anthology answers a long-felt need, and its arrival should be celebrated. John GreenCopyright © American Library Association. If you hold the common view of Arab women as submissive and repressed beings, this book might be the thing for you. Even though repression and sexual discrimination may be harsher in Arab societies than in our Western world, that seems to be only one side of reality. What this anthology shows us is strong-willed, sensitive and opinionated women, who are also highly skilled in that most demanding of crafts - poetry. Inevitably, some of the poems are better than others. But the first alone justify buying the book, for they are VERY good. The translations are also (as far as one can ascertain through taste and personal intuition) good, with the possible exception of Munia Samara's poems, where the translator several times seems to refer to a city as both "it" and "she", occassionally in the same line: "It has not surrendered her keys to one prophet", "it opens its windows / and throws a bone / to the barking Napoleon around her walls".Notwithstanding these minor flaws, the book is enjoyable and worthwhile as a field guide for discovering the fascination of the Arab world and its remarkable women poets.

The Shimmer of Strength Shines Brightly By Hortensia Anderson I purchased this wonderful volume as a result of the war - I wanted to get inside the creative mind of Arab women. And I have found that poetry is the way to do it. Nathalie Handel has given us a real gift - a book filled with beautiful, strong poetry. These are a just a few examples to whet your appetite from a substantial body of breathtaking poetry:Zakiyya Malallah from Qatar:"She picks meand reconstitutes my colours.""You treasure me on your lips,I burst like a swingand dangle like fragrance."or Habiba Muhammadi from Algeria:"No one can standIn the face of the sunIt alone knowsTh way to the sunset.""The hearts raided by lonelinesslead the conquests of the word."

Reading modern poerty by Arab women however is a delight. This book encompasses poems that reveal the struggle of being an Arab in the U.S, the struggle of migration, war, occupation, and the struggle of cultural identity.I highly recommend this book to those who love poetry and those who wish to understand what it means to be an Arabic women living in the United States.

In presenting to the public the last volume of the "Ragged Dick Series," the author desires to return his thanks for the generous reception accorded, both by the press and the public, to these stories of street life. Several of the characters are drawn from life, and nearly all of the incidents are of actual occurrence. Indeed, the materials have been found so abundant that invention has played but a subordinate part.

The thrilling capture and escape from a band of counterfeiters added a different touch of adventure I do not see very often by this author. Very good morals and strong push for honesty mark this book with a five star from me. Although Richard Hunter was not included in this story he was mentioned by his old friend. Bringing the whole series nicely together.Loved it and would definitely recommend

His books should be a reading requirement in high school. One can build positive characteristics from Horatio's reads

Fly Fishing By Caroline I bought this book for y husband and boys cause they were taking their first fly fishing trip this summer and I want to make sure they had everything they need. This book helps me get them ready for their trip but also gave them great tips and ideas they could use. They book was full of helpful information on fly fishing from what to use to how to cast their line out. This book was very easy to understand and I am so happy I got it for them.

It is written in very pompous, non-reader friendly language, has NO diagrams, and doesn't cover very much of fly fishing and is way too general. I was looking for steps, pictures of knots I'll need, and how to perform various casts as well as some information on how to read fish behavior.

It has advised me about core principles of fly fishing, while encouraging me to lean the waters I fish to gain experience. of what works there. This is exactly what I was looking for. The writing is simple and easy to understand.

"Do the beastly old map yourself, if you want it. I shan't, anyhow!" "Wilfred!" "Aw, Wil-fred!" The boy at the end of the schoolroom table, red-haired, snub-nosed and defiant, mimicked the protesting tone. "I've done it once, and I'm blessed if I do it again." "No one would dream that it was ever meant for Africa." The young teacher glanced at the scrawled and blotted map before her. "It—it doesn't look like anything earthly. You must do it again, Wilfred." "Don't you, Wilf." Wilfred's sister leaned back in her chair, tilting it on its hind legs. "You have nothing to do with Wilfred's work, Avice. Go on with your French." "Done it, thanks," said Avice. "And I suppose I can speak to my own brother if I like." "No, you can't—in lesson time," said the teacher. "Who's going to stop me?" Cecilia Rainham controlled herself with an effort.

By MaryAnne Percy-Needham I don't know whether I'm happily reliving my childhood or not, but I'm finding Mary Grant Bruce's work as compelling a read as I did fifty years ago. And this was the one I had never read. I'd wondered how and why Tommy and her brother were suddenly at Billabong, and this gave a wholly satisfactory explanation. The author, who grew up in my part of Australia, thoroughly understands life here. Despite this being written just after the Great War, it's not out-dated. The Billabong people still have to battle bushfires, just as we did four years ago (latest arson attack). Despite writing for young adults, her books are entirely credible, which is the hallmark of a gifted author. Please, please publish the whole set!

This book is about the expedition of a young boy's life growing up in the 70's in a small, rural town in Missouri. Throughout, readers will relive the small town teenage experience, the values of lifelong friendship, determination and love, and the incredible beauty of Missouri's scenery, including a popular local hangout where a mysterious murder takes place. Additionally, readers will be drawn into the exciting adventure of a car theft operation the boy finds himself wrapped up in, which extends across state lines. Coincidentally during the same time, another amazing story of a young American Thoroughbred, Spectacular Bid, with a legendary aura and unmistakable determination to win was occurring. The similarities between the two are evident, and the spectacular win of the 1979 Kentucky Derby is thrilling in much of the same way as the boy's triumphs. The plot will intrigue the reader as they connect with the boy and the struggles he will face on his journey to becoming a man, including the many crossroads he will encounter along the way. My Spectacular Bid is a must read that will reveal many of life's struggles, determination, and one teenage boy's mission to make sense of it all.

The author will take you on a journey that will never be forgotten. My Spectacular Bid focuses on a young teenage boy from a small town. Through friendships, trials and tribulations over come many obstacles. All teenagers seem to looking and experimenting in the world they live in; 'trying to fit in'. The author will keep you guessing from the first chapter to the last as you embark into his world.Much like the winning Kentucky Derby race horse; Spectacular Bid, both are looking to make a triumph. Both are trying to get to the 'finish line'. Spectacular Bid was dark grey in color, the teenage boy enters a dark grey world. Spectacular Bid was fast, setting track records and the teenage boy would soon find out and learn what 'fast' was all about. There are twists and turns. Ups and downs. You will laugh and you will cry. In the end you will see how one teenage boy entered a very dark world, full of many temptations and triumphed through it all. Follow his course of life, you'll be glad you did!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good Read By Amazon Customer MY SPECTACULAR BID is a "coming of age" novel set in small town USA. It reflects the attitude(s) of rural America during the tumultuous time of the mid to late seventies. The major characters, like the youth of that period, are into the party/hang out mode and are willing to experiment with most things including wild parties at the local clay pits, fast cars with big engines, and fast people who invaded their turf and played havoc with their social innocence by introducing hard drugs, stolen cars, robbery, and eventually the murder of a respected doctor. The novel focuses on the main character, his tight knit group of friends, and the issues which alter their lives as they struggle to do the right things. The book is not a "do gooder" book, but rather one which is reflective of the confusion of the times. It deals with the loss of innocence and the metamorphosis into worldly realities which most survived.

Anyone who grew up in a small town in the 70's can relate to this book in one way or another. Even those who didn't can still relate because of the music and the times, or get an idea of how it felt to grow up during that decade. I felt like the author did a "spectacular" job describing people, scenery, friendship, along with his own thoughts and struggles. Check this one out for sure!
