DURING the last two years Fate, Chance, and Destiny had been too busy to attend to Mike Clinch. But now his turn was coming in the Eternal Sequence of things. The stars in their courses indicated the beginning of the undoing of Mike Clinch. From Esthonia a refugee Countess wrote to James Darragh in New York: "—After two years we have discovered that it was José Quintana's band of international thieves that robbed Ricca. Quintana has disappeared. "A Levantine diamond broker in New York, named Emanuel Sard, may be in communication with him.

About the Author Robert William Chambers was an American author who is best known for his Art Nouveau short-story collection, The King in Yellow, considered to be one of the most important examples of American supernatural fiction. Chambers was a prolific writer, and although he continued to write within the weird genre, publishing The Maker of Moon, The Mystery of Choice, and The Tree of Heaven, none of his subsequent efforts achieved the success of The King in Yellow. Chambers early works greatly influenced the work of H.P. Lovecraft and other horror writers, as well as the 2014 HBO television show True Detective. Robert Chambers died in 1933 at the age of 68.

By frumiousb I read this book as part of my personal project of reading books from my paternal grandfather's library.Robert W. Chambers was a prolific and successful fantastic fiction writer who worked between 1894 and his death in 1933. He is most likely best known for his early horror/weird short fiction, but he wrote scores of books in a wide variety of genres. The Flaming Jewel (1922) is a mystery/thriller with a G-Man detective angle. It pits an international gang of jewel thieves against a group of American rum-running poachers. It takes a loyal ex-army man-- Jim Darragh-- who has to sort the whole mess out. At stake for him are some famous and elusive jewels that once belonged to Her Serene Highness Theodorica, Grand Duchess of Esthonia. Darragh has a personal interest in the happiness of Theodorica and means to retrieve her treasure-- the only thing left of her fortune after the anguish of war.Compared to other similar books from the same period, The Flaming Jewel stood out for its relative length and complexity. Although the writing is uneven (at the rate which Chambers wrote, it nearly had to be uneven) there are some interesting plot twists and turns. (Those plot twists include one of the most original gruesome deaths for a villain that I have ever encountered.) He also has some nice thematic touches going on-- the post-WWI malaise, a US infected by the consequences of war, the contrast between imported and domestic villainy. It's nice to see that several companies are bringing Chambers back into print. These may be largely interesting as a product of their time, but seem to me still worth the effort to read. (I might have really given it three stars, but it seems to me worth four for the historic value.)
