3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Mystery By drkhimxz A vintage work by the prolific Carolyn Wells, this is a quite readable puzzler. It is an example of what I would call, non-violent murder mysteries, such as written by Agatha Christie, Essentially what we get is an early build-up, the murder, and the rest is a matter of Who Dun It and Where is the leading Suspect. The language and sentiments are sometimes what some would term dated, but I did not have any problem about that. There are a number of well-drawn characters and a super-sleuth (with a youthful protege, who makes major contributions to the investigation). While crucial to the solution, the super-sleuth plays a surprisingly small part in the book. The writing is clear, the plot line tricky but not complicated, the momentum nicely maintained. I would commend this to youthful readers who are not put off by the age of the book and to most adults who take to the "cozy" sub-genre.

But there's no real mystery here, and the characters are cardboard. And as usual in the Stone mysteries, the "lower class" Fibsy does most of the sleuthing, but is treated as a mere underling.

It is such a timeless classic. Placed picturesquely in the early 1900 New England area. About a little girl (Mary Agusta Lathrop--called Mary-'Gusta) who is left an orphan after her stepfather dies. Two of her stepfather's old sea faring business partners are left to take care of her.

Review In the tradition of Roger Kahn, who waxed eloquent about the loveable "Bums" of Ebbets Field, baseball writers (like all baseball fans) maintain an endless, unshakeable love affair with losers. Kalm's Boys of Summer is only the prototype for a flood tide of books on diamond heroes who always lost the big game and always evoked the plaintive cry of "wait till next season!" Veteran sports historian Dom Forker thus sets himself a difficult task of arresting our attention with accounts of baseball's most victorious (and consequently its least-loved) teams. Forker's book chronicles the events surrounding the 19491953 New York Yankees and is in many ways the antithesis of Kahn's classic study of the rival 1950s-era Brooklyn Dodgers. On the surface the format is similar-interviews with twenty-three alumni of that Yankee juggernaut which remains the only team in the century-long history of the sport to capture five consecutive World Series. Forker's title echoes Kalm's as wellThe Men ofAutumn---although the point here is that Kalm's melancholy appeal to disappointing summertime dreams of childhood baseball reflects a more tragic tone missing from Forker's less editorial treatment. These Yankees were, after all, supreme winners who always emerged victorious in the money-seasons of late September and early October. For these Yankees, it was always this year's celebrations and never next year's vain hopes. Forker's lively interview transcriptions do much to capture the winning attitude and supreme confidence of players like Rizzuto, Bauer, Woodling, Mize, Irv Noren, Joe Collins, and Billy Martin who formed the heart of Casey Stengel's unstoppable teams of the Mantle-Berra-Ford era. Ultimately, however, Forker's book is far different from Kahn's in all the most obvious ways. Attention here is focused narrowly on the baseball events of the 1950s rather than on the lifelong struggles which cursed Kahn's Dodgers. While Kalm's book eventually dissovles into the selfindulgent autobiography of its author, Forker's personal involvement with the Yankees is appropriately muted and skillfully concealed. Baseball is the sole focus here, and memories of those marvelous Yankee teams during baseball's greatest decade come to life in the reminiscences of some of the least remembered Yankees of the era: Ed Lopat, Charlie Silvera, Tommy Byrne, Gil McDougald. For those who grew up with baseball in the 1950s-hating the Yankees with vitriol or loving them with boundless passion-Forker's work is a baseball fantasy matched by few other baseball books. There are small flaws: The two greatest players on this team - DiMaggio and Mantle-fail to appear and were apparently unwilling to participate. Brief introductions to each carefully edited interview often merely repeat more lively players' commentaries to follow. But Forker and his collaborators do transport us once again back to the diamond-summer afternoons in the Yankee Stadium of our childhood--and what more could we ask of this or any baseball book? -- From Independent Publisher

This very long and detailed account is filled absolutely with drama the like one finds only in few places. It is amazing Mungo survived the first journey. The culture of that time was harsh, cruel, absolutely evil toward anyone who disagreed with the "big man"! I was so taken by the total disregard of human life so many times; it all seemed that most in that part of Africa just survived. I know they did not just survive by other reading, but the Mungo account is powerful, moving and highly dramatic and worth reading simply for the culture.

A very interesting book.

From the moment I began reading I could not put it down until I had finished.Alger was a fantastic writer, but I become vexed by the same themes that ride though his work. This is a good novel no doubt, but it will be along the same lines as every other work in the canon.Outline: *SPOILER ALERT*A young boy becomes orphaned after his only relative, his father, dies. The town squire, Mr. Pope, sees it as his business to take-care of the boy (who is only 16 years of age at the time), by turning him into a pauper and forcing him to a life of penury in the town's Almshouse, governed by Mr. Tucker and his wife.Of course, none of this is to the heroes desire (Phillip Gray), who constantly defies the orders of the Squire to live a life off charity. Phil is kidnapped by the Squire, and subsequently brought to the poorhouse. Previously, Phillip inflated the Squire's desire to put him in his care by the willing effort of keeping his only prized property; his violin. The Squire however is determined to make him sell it in order to pay off his father's outstanding debts in the town.Eventually, Phillip escapes from the town poorhouse and leaves Norton (the town which he grew up). The Squire does not pursue him, instead he merely becomes disgruntled.Eventually he makes loads of money on his violin by playing concerts. He gets swindled along the way by a Professor Roccabocca, whom he befriended on the road. Then, he leaves to New York after making acquaintence with a boy on the road, who left New York to fight Indians in the West.Phil manages to persuade Walter not to run to the West, and instead return to New York with him.After reunification with his father, Walter promises never to run away again. Phil and his father negotiate a deal whereby the young Phil would become Walter's guardian in exchange for paying for Phil's remaining education in a decent private school.~It's not the best ending I've ever read to be honest though.

It was not very good or realistic or interesting to read. The characters weren't very credible/realistic, the events seemed to work out too smoothly to be true, and the writing style was old but simplistic and dull.
