Golfito, ergo sum. I golf, therefore, I am. In this revolutionary meditation on golf, philosopher Andrew Sola and PGA professional Bruce Loome use the groundbreaking ideas of the great thinkers to help you become a better golfer. The Philosophical Golfer is not just another instructional book that only shows you how to increase your distance or cure your slice. By using unique insight from geniuses like Descartes, Kant, and Marx, it teaches you how to become a complete golfer, technically and mentally, from tee to green. The great thinkers dedicated themselves to understanding the universe and improving our lives. But until now, no one has considered how their wisdom can help us understand the game of golf. Becoming a philosophical golfer will certainly improve your game--it may also change your life. Volume II covers modern philosophy, beginning in 17th century France and ending in 20th century America. Each chapter is accompanied by practical tips to improve your performance on the course.

Best Ebook PDF Online Fred's Way: A Novel, by Craig Nagel

Fred's Way is a coming-of-age novel about a young man torn between going off to college to become an ordained Lutheran pastor or staying home in Chicago to marry his high school sweetheart. It resonates with the agony of someone trying desperately-and often comically-to find his role in a society that refuses to fit his innocent expectations. The central character, Fred Hansen, is at root a mystic, alive to the wonder and glory of life. Like a latter-day Don Quixote, he's never quite in synch with what others call reality, including the scientific world view of his premed roommate, Jimbo; the commonsense practicality of his girlfriend, Patsy; the argumentative mindset of Catherine Coyle, an attractive classmate with whom he gets entangled; or the spontaneous (and somewhat improvident) habits of Corning, a red-haired art major who lives down the hall. Fred's Way recaptures the torrent of changes sweeping through America at the start of the 1960s and gently explores the heartaches and triumphs we all encounter in the process of trying to find our place in the world.

Fred's Way: A Novel, by Craig Nagel

About the Author Craig Nagel is a Minnesota author best known for two fine collections of short pieces written over many years for a weekly newspaper, the Lake Country Echo. His light touch, his compassion, and his perfect pitch evoke the joys and sorrows of daily life, and have earned him thousands of loyal readers. In this his first novel, Craig creates an imagined place-a fine liberal arts college of Lutheran persuasion-and sets within it a very bright, verbal, idealistic boy of the later 1950s. We follow Fred Hansen on his way via an interior commentary on events variously bewildering, ecstatic, shaming, hilarious, poignant. Keeping all this drama (much of it interior) going requires an authorial hand both gentle and sure; and Craig Nagel is that author. Fred's Way is a story from the middle of the last century, when today's grandparents were flocking to college, losing innocence, seeking faith. I had the powerful feeling on reading this manuscript that I “knew Fred Hansen when,” that I'd had those discussions with him in '61 when it was all happening to me, that I could run into Fred at the Tip Top Cafe and call back that crazy night toward the end of our sophomore year. Fred's Way reads like a prequel to the life of one of Craig's newspaper column readers who pause on reading and smile, or sigh. It takes a fine novelist to do that, and this is indeed a fine novel. Douglas A. Davis, PhD. Emeritus Professor of Psychology Haverford College

By John Hess Nagel has a firm grip on living a naive life in the early 60’s, while taking the world he has been given by his parents and church, and finding that he doesn’t exactly accept everything he has been taught to believe. And so he begins the journey of a lifetime — one that is endlessly challenging. That is learning how to be your own person — a good person — and how to relate to the people around you. His writing seemed to me fairly simple and elementary at first and it grows in complexity and sophistication along with Fred’s growing persona. That is a very neat trick. Nagel’s descriptions of his characters are sometimes laugh out loud funny and at other times silky smooth and knowing.I’m of an age to feel deeply the authenticity with which Nagel explores Fred’s world and I recommend it — it is just a good story, but if you lived in that era, it can be truly powerful to find yourself back in it.

But unlike Odysseus whose goal was always the same Fred spends the whole story stepping goal to goal like pilgrim crossing a river on stones. As far as my decades have revealed, life is like this. It’s not what you thought it might be. But life itself... living is good. Finding that out is enough for anyone. Nagel helps us see the simple truth and makes us laugh out loud in the process. No book can hope for more than this.

Reasonableness of Catholic Ceremonies and Practices, by Rev. John J. Burke

About the Author John J. Burke (1875–1936) was a Paulist priest and editor of the Catholic World from 1903 to 1922. A central point of Burke's writing and lecturing concerned the supernatural element of charity. Burke told the 1915 graduating class of New York's College of Mount Saint Vincent-on-Hudson that, for two millennia, the Church has pursued as her "one great purpose" to lead souls to the love of God. "Whatever other claims she makes as to her mission," he insisted, "are at best but secondary." Burke warned Catholics about the modern superstition that "experts in the social sciences might well be trusted with our social betterment," a view that encouraged the trend towards making of religion "a private and an almost secret matter." (Wikipedia) His other books include Characteristics of the Early Church (1899), The Great Problem (1909), The Church in Many Lands (1915), The Armor of Light (1925), The Path of Duty (1941), The Rural Rector (1942), Trials and Triumphs (1942), The Miracles of the Master (1942), and The Catholic at War (1942).

In 1957 the English choreographer Frederick Ashton and the German composer Hans Werner Henze began to collaborate on a new ballet, Ondine. During the creation of the work Henze kept a diary of its progress and his thoughts on the choreography and the music. Here translated into English for the first time, the diary gives a major insight into the workings of the creators' minds during the composition of one of the twentieth century's major works of art.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Dear Hans, thanks for sharing, you're the cat's pajamas. Better, you're The Cat's Fugue. By J. Faulk These extracts, melded together, from the composer's diary were published in Germany in 1959 and in English in 2003.In 1957 Ashton and Henze meet in Ischia to convert the old German folktale Undine into a ballet scenario that choreographer, composer, and the great ballerina Fonteyn can find inspiring (as well as the traditionalist London audience). The tale commences in the hut of a fisherman and his wife and their foundling daughter, actually an ondine. The girl immediately falls in love (so far as an ondine can) with the guest Knight. It takes Ashton and Henze a long time to jettison this commonplace setting. Meanwhile, Henze's diary wanders off into appreciation of Italian life.Henze goes to London to write the music and his diary shares the milieu with us. Designer Lila De Nobili comes over from Paris and joins in the ever-shifting ideas. Neo-Gothic settings and a Mediterranean locale are settled upon, and the months of work continue. Henze clues us in to his compositional thoughts, as in Act III where the surprising piano addition stems from the first seven notes of Scarlatti's "Cat's Fugue." Long delay while the ballet company goes on tour. But Henze records the orchestral score, an invaluable aid in finalizing the Ondine choreography. At the premiere in late 1959 Henze conducts. This short, intimate, delightful book is enriched with illustrations. Ten photos show us Fonteyn and Somes, the sets and corps for the three acts (the original sets were superior to the adaptations in the DVD), as well as a handwritten page of minutage. There are also seven costume sketches and five production sketches (De Nobili's art style is very loose).Henze is a first-class writer of prose, even in his personal diary. I've barely dented his autobiography, "Bohemian Fifths" (publ. in Germany 1996, then in English) but I foresee it's a treasure.

Do you consider yourself a hunter? If you have ever dated, played sports, or held a job, then your answer should be yes. We are always hunting―trying to track down and take the things we want, the things that will make our life bigger, better, safer; more satisfying, exciting, and just plain fun.

In The Hunt, serial entrepreneur, hunter, and OutdoorHub founder David Farbman offers a way of thinking about work, life, and our connection with the world based upon the ancient discipline of hunting. The Hunt will inspire anyone striving for more to think like hunters―with poise, concentration, and skill; to identify their targets; and, with focus, determination, and satisfaction, to achieve those goals.

Specifically, The Hunt shows how to

• Get a bigger, clearer picture of your life and goals, and discover things about yourself and your ability that you’ve never noticed or seen before;• Gain the hunter’s special skills at observation and perception, to understand your environment;• Learn “predatory consciousness”―the full understanding of your prey, whether business partners or competitors, so you can predict their actions;• Harness and leverage every opportunity to obtain your desired outcomes and inspire your best thinking;• Fully understand where to pick battles, and where not to “hunt” at all.

The principles of The Hunt will give you a clearer, sharper lens for seeing the world and shaping your role in it. You’ll make better decisions, form stronger alliances, build better strategies, target bigger wins, and uncover more opportunities. Best of all, you will become a true hunter when you know who you are, what you want, and how to get what you’re hunting for.

The Hunt: Target, Track, and Attain Your Goals, by David Farbman

Amazon.com Review David Farbman Q&A with David Farbman, author of The Hunt Who will benefit from The Hunt?

I wrote this book for anyone who needs to gain calm and clarity in life. Whether you’re more comfortable in the boardroom or the backwoods, The Hunt will help you learn to live and execute with more purpose, awareness, and openness to the great power of the natural order. The Hunt will show you how to go after your goals while still being true to who you are.

How does a hunter’s mindset help us clarify goals and go after them?

A hunter’s mindset allows you to learn to identify the difference between what is real and what is fear, and then take that knowledge to push past barriers to reach your desired outcomes. When you think like a hunter, you gain a heightened awareness, tap the primal instincts from within, and can take down your most meaningful targets. With predatory consciousness, you’ll understand how to be present at this moment in your life so you can recognize opportunity and know to seize it.

Why is it such a challenge to focus clearly on what we want to accomplish?

We all get hung up on the noise or the clutter of situations and lose perspective of what it is we really want. As a result, our targets get further and further out of sight and zone. While it’s easy for anyone to get overwhelmed, small changes lead to innovation. There is always time to take a new tactic. The principles of The Hunt are designed to provide a clearer, sharper lens for seeing the world. You’ll learn to make better decisions, form stronger alliances, build superior strategies, target bigger wins, and uncover more opportunities.

How did you become a hunter? And how has hunting changed you?

I was a crazy, energetic kid. I give my parents an incredible amount of credit for recognizing my need to connect with nature on a very basic level. That connection has allowed me, throughout my life, to return to the woods and fields to find calm and clarity, to be able to step out of my busy mind and tap into my authentic self, the part of me that is wholly my own without judgment. Some of the most profound moments of my life have happened in a tree stand, where I could literally see farther, beyond the clutter that blocked my view. So I’ve been developing the ideas in The Hunt for my entire life. Now I am able to find that same clarity and calm within myself wherever I am. That mindset allows me to cut through negative, sometimes overwhelming messaging, so business decisions are clear-cut and focused. For me personally, it is easier to shed the past and live in the moment.

From the Inside Flap

Do you consider yourself a hunter?

If you have ever dated, played sports, or held a job, then your answer should be yes. We are always hunting—trying to track down and take the things we want, the things that will make our life bigger, better, safer, more satisfying, exciting, and just plain fun.

In The Hunt, serial entrepreneur, hunter, and OutdoorHub founder David Farbman offers a way of thinking about work, life, and our connection with the world based upon the ancient discipline of hunting. The Hunt will inspire anyone striving for more to think like hunters—with poise, concentration, and skill, to identify their targets and, with focus, determination, and satisfaction, to achieve those goals.

Specifically, The Hunt shows how to:

  • Get a bigger, clearer picture of your life and goals, and discover things about yourself and your ability that you’ve never noticed or seen before
  • Gain the hunter’s special skills at observation and perception, to understand your environment
  • Learn “predatory consciousness”—the full understanding of your prey, whether business partners or competitors, so you can predict their actions
  • Harness and leverage every opportunity to obtain your desired outcomes and inspire your best thinking
  • Fully understand where to pick battles, and where not to “hunt” at all

The principles of The Hunt will give you a clearer, sharper lens for seeing the world and shaping your role in it. You’ll make better decisions, form stronger alliances, build better strategies, target bigger wins, and uncover more opportunities. Best of all, you will become a true hunter when you know who you are, what you want, and how to get what you’re hunting for.

May be more convincing and useful if you are well-versed in the hunting culture By Amazonian Consumer David Farbman's insists that we humans are still hunters even in this day and age, so we need five specific qualities to optimize our ability to attain our goals:Getting Up, Getting Clear: ConsciousnessKeeping it Real: AuthenticityTaking Trophies: LeverageBringing it Home: Real-Time ExecutionFinding Flow and Leaving a Clean WakeI believe the author's hunter analogy may be more convincing for readers who can relate to the process of hunting. For those who do not hunt, like me, I found this analogy unhelpful in learning about strategic planning.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Okay at best By Preston True I'm sure Farbman has had much success, but his story didn't hold my interest and many of the ideas were simply existing common sense said differently. If he had a more engaging story to tell, he'd capture readers' attention better.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Goals: If you plan out a way to attain them that make sense, then you probably will reach your goals. By Jeff Lippincott Another book on strategic planning. I've read a ton of them. This one is written by someone who as a kid was taught to hunt animals and kill them. He's used his experiences as a hunter to help describe the process of strategic planning. If he'd been a competitive cyclist, then he'd have used his winning experiences to describe the process. And if he'd become a great chef or cook, then he'd have used his cooking experiences to describe the process of strategic planning.I didn't really see anything new or novel in this book. The pages were small, the line spacing was kind of wide, and the margins were not too tight. The page count capped out at 200. Kind of hard to even call this thing a book since it was so short. Only 5 chapters, and I didn't really think they did the subject matter of tome justice. There are many other books out there that do a better job of explaining strategic planning. One that comes to mind used the example of archer. It's hard for an archer to hit the bullseye if he is wearing a blindfold. But if he takes the blindfold off and aims true for his target he will probably hit it. This would seem to sum up the 200 pages of this book. One might even call an archer a hunter. 3 stars!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great maps of popular fishing lakes By Malachi B Provides access and camping information for 40 popular fishing lakes in Oregon. Also includes lodging information, local tackle shops, and best fishing method by month and species. The maps show where the different species of fish like to hang out, but it's not incredibly detailed in that regard. These are definitely not topo-maps - more of an outline with major features like roads, boat launches, deep spots, tributaries, islands, etc. Covers a lot of the popular central Oregon lakes (10 of the 40 lakes are in central Oregon). Doesn't cover nearly all of the lakes we have, but has the most popular ones.

It would be impossible to have everyone's personal favorites. Gobs of information about each water body. Really great publication.

Cradled in the valley of the Arno, its noble architecture fitly supplementing its numerous natural charms, lies the Tuscan city of Florence, the birthplace of immortal Dante, the early home of Michael Angelo, the seat of the Florentine Medici, the scene of Savonarola's triumphs and his tragic end. Fame has come to many sons of Florence, as poets, statesmen, sculptors, painters, travellers; but perhaps none has achieved a distinction so unique, apart, and high as the subject of this volume, after whom the continents of the western hemisphere were named.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. An obscured view of Amerigo Vespucci By Dayle Smith This is a book really about someones opinion of Vespucci, based on what the writer believes to be the relationship (if any) between Vespucci and Christopher Columbus. Accordig to the author Vespucci was the strategist and geographer behind Columbus's voyage but circumstances prevented him from actually being given the opportunity to test his thoeries. It is very hard for any historian to read because it conflates assumptions and a few facts into a kind of plausable narrative. I found it to be very off-putting, since my experience has taught me that when an author suggests what might have occurred or even might have been said in meetings he is not sure even occurred between Columbus and Vespucci, he really leaves the realms of history and weaves a kind of fictional history with a few facts scattered here and there. I suppose it is better than reading horoscopes about Columbus but only marginally. If the book was confined to what Vespucci did as a theoretician then it may well have a valid seperate life but to so meld it with Columbus is, in my opinion, a serios mistake, so bad that it ought not be alowed to masquerade as history at all.

“And you once said, Heavy Stone, that you did not believe a poilu could love a fat girl!” Helen said it in something like awe. While Ruth’s tea-urn bubbled cozily three pair of very bright eyes were bent above a tiny, iridescent spark which adorned the “heart finger” of the plumper girl’s left hand.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. enjoyable classic from a bygone era By Battleship Alice B. Emerson wrote a nice series of books for young ladies during the teens and twenties. Ruth Fielding was a young girl who was forced to overcome several obstacles in life. She lost her parents at a young age and grew up in the Red Mill under the tutelage of a grumpy aunt and uncle. Ruth was a classy and elegant young lady. She had good character and became a delightful adult.Emerson wrote numerous books in the series. In "Homeward Bound," she details Ruthie working as a nurse in the Red Cross during World War I. She was injured in a bombing raid. She was sent home on a ship. She discovered an intrigue by German passengers. The ship was evacuated and Ruth and a couple of members of the ship's crew were hijacked. A young man named Tom was a friend of Ruth. He was captured by a German zeppelin and was taken as a prisoner of war. Tom made a daring escape and disabled the zeppelin causing it to sink. Tom was able to survive by getting in a seaworthy vessel. Tom and Ruth teamed up to take control of the passenger ship. The ending was a happy one. Ruth was presented as an empowered woman who did her part in the war effort against the German enemy. This was not the best book of the series. It had a plot that was somewhat predictable. It was a book written with the purpose to inspire loyalty to America during World War I. The book puts the German enemy in a bad light. However, I enjoyed the book. It was representative of the literature written in a more nationalistic era. Ruth Fielding was portrayed as a likable girl. She was smart, brave, and lady-like. This series of books sets an ideal for young ladies to be empowered and be classy at the same time. This is a noble goal in this age of hedonism.I bought this book because my friend's daughter is named Ruth Fielding. She is a delightful girl who has gone through some trials and tribulations, not unlike the protagonist of Emerson's children's novels. My wife and I love this young lady and are going to give this book to her for a Christmas present. Our Ruthie is a tough, but classy young lady. Her character traits reminds me of the girl from the Red Mill.

A heartwarming account of the trials and triumphs a hummingbird rehabber encounters while caring for her tiny, fragile patients Before he collided with a limousine, Gabriel, an Anna’s hummingbird with a head and throat cloaked in iridescent magenta feathers, could spiral 130 feet in the air, dive 60 miles per hour in a courtship display, hover, and fly backward. When he arrived in rehab caked in road grime, he was so badly injured that he could barely perch. But Terry Masear, one of the busiest hummingbird rehabbers in the country, was determined to save this damaged bird, who seemed oddly familiar. During the four months that Terry worked with Gabriel, she took in 160 hummingbirds, from a miniature nestling rescued by a bulldog and a fledgling trapped inside a skydiving wind tunnel at Universal CityWalk, to Pepper, a female Anna’s injured on a film set. In their time together, Pepper and Gabriel form a special bond and, together, with Terry’s help, learn to fly again. Woven around Gabriel’s and Pepper’s stories are those of other colorful birds in this personal narrative filled with the science and magic surrounding these fascinating creatures.

Fastest Things on Wings: Rescuing Hummingbirds in Hollywood, by Terry Masear

Review “In her endearing new book, FASTEST THINGS ON WINGS: Rescuing Hummingbirds in Hollywood, Terry Masear reveals that these birds are not only gorgeous, smart and jaw-dropping masters of flight but also trusting souls that bring out the humanity and love in even the most hard-bitten residents...This is a book about birds that is actually a book about love, and Masear does us a favor by risking heartbreak every day....a powerful story of interspecies communication and trust. The last words of FASTEST THINGS ON WINGS are: ‘I am flying.’ A fitting end to a book that will change forever the way you look at these little birds.” —Los Angeles Times "rewarding for birds and reader alike. This is a charming and lively summertime read, something for the patio or balcony, glass of iced tea at hand, a hummingbird or two zipping around the azaleas." —Dallas Morning News  "a must-read for everyone who enjoys hummingbirds. (Is there anyone who does not fit that category?) Terry Masear is a hummingbird rehabilitator who takes in these tiny injured birds and treats them with great care. Her book, FASTEST THINGS ON WINGS tells about her experiences winning – and occasionally losing – her battles to bring her charges back to health. Although Masear lives in Hollywood and deals with West Coast birds, her stories apply equally to the one species, the ruby-throated hummingbird, we have here. I learned much from this book." —Buffalo News “[a] bright, engrossing debut…Not just for birders, this captivating book brims with warmth, humor, and drama that will have wide appeal.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review "Encounters with hummingbirds with a variety of personalities have given [Masear] many insightful stories to tell. She has also learned much about the sometimes strange and other times wonderful people of her community, who call her night and day to report orphaned or distressed hummingbirds. Masear is bound to win fans with this passionate memoir." —Booklist "Masear shares an abundance of knowledge about hummingbirds’ mating and feeding habits, their incredible flying abilities and migratory journeys, and what they need to heal and thrive. But her observations about the rescuers are just as interesting. 'You can learn a lot about someone by his reaction to a helpless hummingbird in need of rescue,' she writes. 'In fact, you can find out just about everything you need to know about a person.'" —BirdWatching Magazine "Terry Masear’s charming account of saving hurt and orphaned hummingbirds grabbed my attention from the first paragraph and kept me riveted until the very last page. I loved this artfully woven story and am certain that animal lovers of all ages will as well." —Michele Raffin, author of The Birds of Pandemonium "This rare and lovely book is destined to be a classic. I was riveted, charmed, delighted, devastated, profoundly moved, and taken to a magical place few people ever get to glimpse. It's one of the best books I've ever read about how rehabbers bond with the animals we save." —Stacey O'Brien, author of Wesley the Owl "This book is a delightful read. No one else could write such a wonderful memoir of care, compassion, and delight for these small creatures. Masear’s writing is enthralling and captivating—and I hated for it to end.” —Joanna Burger, author of The Parrot Who Owns Me “Fastest Thing on Wings is an exaltation of hummingbirds, but it’s also the story of Terry Masear’s exceptional heart and heroism in saving these fragile and remarkable creatures.  In her beautiful account, every rescue is a revelation. Hollywood is full of stars, but few shine as brightly as hers.”  —Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO, The Humane Society of the United States  "In this well-written memoir, she tells the story of Gabriel, a male Anna’s Hummingbird rescued from danger in the middle of busy Rodeo Drive, and Pepper, a female Anna’s injured on a film set. Along the way, Masear shares an abundance of knowledge about hummingbirds’ mating and feeding habits, their incredible flying abilities and migratory journeys, and what they need to heal and thrive. But her observations about the rescuers are just as interesting. 'You can learn a lot about someone by his reaction to a helpless hummingbird in need of rescue,' she writes. 'In fact, you can find out just about everything you need to know about a person.'" —BirdWatching "You don’t have to be a bird person in general or a hummingbird person specifically to read this book. You don’t need to know anything about birds at all. The very gifted bird whisperer Terry Masear has you covered. She’s one of California’s hardest-working hummingbird rehabilitators. What she knows about these tiny wonders will leave the average bird lover agog....[you'll] come away with a sense of awe for the tenacity and toughness of these wild animals and their sheer will to survive." —Washington Post   “I cannot believe what a gripping read this is – it’s like the Hunger Games for hummingbirds.” —Robin Young, host of NPR's Here and Now   "I begin with a must-read for everyone who enjoys hummingbirds. (Is there anyone who does not fit that category?) Terry Masear is a hummingbird rehabilitator who takes in these tiny injured birds and treats them with great care. Her book, Fastest Things on Wings, tells about her experiences winning – and occasionally losing – her battles to bring her charges back to health. Although Masear lives in Hollywood and deals with West Coast birds, her stories apply equally to the one species, the ruby-throated hummingbird, we have here. I learned much from this book" —Buffalo News “When Terry Masear, author of THE FASTEST THINGS ON WINGS: Rescuing Hummingbirds in Hollywood rescued a fledgling 12 years ago, she had no idea that she would one day be Hollywood’s go-to hummingbird rehabber, fielding as many as 85 calls a day….[In the book] she explains how one of the smallest, most beautiful birds in the world evolved from dinosaurs; how hummingbirds can experience PTSD; how even rock stars cry over injured hummingbird chicks; and why she suffers from kitchenheimers.” –National Geographic

From the Inside Flap Before he collided with a limousine, Gabriel, an Anna’s hummingbird with a head and throat cloaked in iridescent magenta feathers, could spiral hundreds of feet in the air, dive 60 miles per hour in a courtship display, hover, and fly backward. When he arrived in rehab caked in road grime, he was so badly injured that he could barely perch. But Terry Masear, one of the busiest hummingbird rehabilitators in the country, was determined to save this damaged bird. During the five months that Terry worked with Gabriel, she took in 160 orphaned and injured hummingbirds, from a miniature hatchling rescued by a bulldog to Pepper, a female Anna’s grounded on a film set. In their time together, Pepper and Gabriel formed a special bond and together, with Terry’s help, learned to fly again. Woven around Gabriel’s and Pepper’s stories are those of other colorful birds in this personal narrative filled with the science and magic surrounding these fascinating creatures.

Case I love books about wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, so I was eager to read Terry Masear’s first-hand account of rescuing hummingbirds in Southern California; after all, that’s where I live, and hummingbirds are very common sights in this part of the world. This is the first rescue and rehab book like this I’ve read about birds. I’ve read many about various types of mammals and found everyone endearing and unforgettable. Typically, those books focused on the individual animal being rescued. As a result, you really got close to the animal and the rescuer. I didn’t know what to expect with a book about rescuing hummingbirds. I knew that I loved these awe-inspiring little jewels with jet engines; I’ve been mesmerized by them countless times in my garden. But would these gorgeous and often very aggressive little creatures prove interesting subjects for a full-length book?I needn’t have worried. The book almost instantly worked its way into my heart and I found I could not put it down. I read it almost nonstop and finished it in a little more than 10 hours over two days. The book is filled with warm-hearted stories about these absolutely amazing birds and their equally awesome rescuers. It’s almost all text. There is a small section of black and white photos in the middle.I expected the book to be mainly about the hummingbirds. So, I was surprised to see that actually the lion’s share of the book was devoted to telling about the human rescuers…especially the dedicated people from all different backgrounds, cultures, educational, and economic levels who were willing to drop everything important in their lives to rescue a hummingbird and get it to Masear for emergency care and rehabilitation. I had no idea how uplifting and captivating these humans rescuing hummingbird stories would be. That was the endearing eye-opener about this book.Masear seems to have a natural gift for storytelling. Her stories about the birds and their rescuers come alive off the page. In particular, she has a gift for dialog and remembering exactly how a person talked and presented themselves when they turned up in her life with a hummingbird needing rescuing. When she tells us each story, it is as if we are there when it happens. Of course, she’s able to describe the little hummers with equal skill. I marveled at her incredible memory, but I assume she made detailed written records for each arrival and graduate. There are two very special hummingbirds that carry the arc of the storytelling along though to the end; i.e., it is their stories that make you want to turn the pages to find out what becomes of them. She spreads out the stories of these two birds in bits and pieces throughout the book. Both of these two hummingbirds were especially difficult rehab cases. I had no idea what to expect with the stories about their unique cases, and I refuse to ruin it for you by telling you anything more. The two special hummers are Gabriel and Pepper. By the end of the book, you will know and love them, too. She gives both of these birds personalities and you learn every detail about their trauma, care, and rehabilitation. If you love wildlife rescue and rehabilitation stories, this one is definitely captivating and extremely enjoyable. I can’t think of any way that Masear could have made this book better short of filling it up with expensive full-color photographs.

When she discovers a hummingbird chick fallen from his nest, she contacts Jean Roper, hummingbird rehabilitator extraordinaire. Jean helps her and Terry tells her to call if she needs help. Jean does, and Terry is sucked into the world of hummingbird rehabilitation. In other words, Ms. Masear didn't aspire to this calling. She is a natural storyteller. Her rehab memoir spans the summer of 2008, and includes lots of useful information for hobbyist hummingbirders. She spills all the poop: How Hollywood hummingbirds typically get hurt, hours fielding frantic phone calls, a grueling schedule of feeding the birds she's rehabbing, and cleaning up the mess. Two birds, Gabriel and Pepper, require special attention before they can be released, and you'll not want to see them go.If your mantra is "four parts water, one part sugar", this is a must read. Two wings up!

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. This story will hum with delight By Connie You don't need to be a hummingbird lover to enjoy this book. Terry Masear's style is fast-paced, engaging and emotive. This story is a combination of memoir, science and nature, sprinkled in with love and devotion for the species. Rescuing hummers is not always joyous, but one can read this book and understand so much about the bird, its habitat and its behaviors that it would be easy to fall in love with these little speed demons. What starts out as one little bird knocked out of a tree from an unknowing tree trimmer turns into a rolling story of hummingbird rescuers in the Los Angeles area and the bonded pair of hummers. Masear describes everything, from bird behavior to bird feeding habits to the kinds of people that rescue these birds and the various rescues in southern California. Who really knew how attracted the birds are to the color red? Who even realized to wash out old hummingbird feeders, that are often beset with a deadly black fungus that can kill a hummingbird? These birds are unique and have personalities, and even when some come across as more territorial than others, this is a fun read and a work of passion for the little bird.

After the death of Judge Kilburn his daughter came back to America. They had been eleven winters in Rome, always meaning to return, but staying on from year to year, as people do who have nothing definite to call them home. Toward the last Miss Kilburn tacitly gave up the expectation of getting her father away, though they both continued to say that they were going to take passage as soon as the weather was settled in the spring. At the date they had talked of for sailing he was lying in the Protestant cemetery, and she was trying to gather herself together, and adjust her life to his loss.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a glimpse into victorian america By Joshua D. Hamilton I discovered this book at my local Sacramento library. I enjoyed the plot and the relaxed pace of the book. The character of the minister is in close parrallel with Reverend Casey in the Grapes of Wrath. Annie kilburn and Grapes of Wrath would be interesting books to read together in a study of how biblical allegory and communist thought are sometimes woven together. Apart from this aspect, i found the book to be a helpful glance back to the lost era of victorian america and the social realities of life during that time. A great read and powerful book in its own right.

Annie Kilburn, his response to Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, examines the complexities of doing good works to help the poor in the United States. Written with Howells' usual ironic humor, Annie Kilburn is a delightful book that leaves the reader pondering the issues Howells raises. Look for references to Dickens' David Copperfield and Bleak House in one of the characters. Funny.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very nice Warriors book with nice photos and info and detail. It is also a hardcover book which is wonderful. Great price. By BBQ Corn Chips This is a very nice book for the price and the amount of pages and detail especially for a hardcover. It has very nice photos, and good information and story about the highlights of the season and the playoffs. It is 128 pages, so you don't get every game highlights and photos. But as a nice summary with info, facts, data and pictures, it is a very nice collectible and memorabilia piece to add to your sports library. It has very good detail and makes a very good reference to the Golden State Warriors 2014-2015 season and playoffs. It is not perfect. It'd be nice if it had even more info and data, or had info on every game and have tons more photos and detailed every player. But, it is only 128 pages and priced economically for everyone to have a good piece in a book. A 500 page book would cost a whole lot more and be less affordable for the majority of fans to purchase. The book is what it is... a very nice color photo book with detail and info of the Warriors 2014-2015 season and the playoffs for the fan to have a very good reference. It is not a complete moment by moment account of everything. It's a very nice summary book with photos at a very nice price. It's hard to find hardcover books in the ones you want to buy sometimes. Paperbacks seem to be the norm nowadays being cheaper to produce. I am glad this is a hardcover. The pages are good and glossy. The price is very nice at under $20. $17.95 at the time I am reviewing it. I recommend the book for the content and it being a hardcover as well as the great price for what you get.
